Blog Tour - Made the Grade: A Howl in the Night by Courtney Rene | Interview, Review, & Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Courtney Rene, who I interviewed about her latest novel "A Howl in the Night!!"

ALSO -- Be sure to comment on this post to be able to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAYs (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from July 30 - August 3, 2012]

My Q&A with Courtney Rene :

Jess : What books have most influenced your life?

Courtney : I think this changes depending on where my life is at the moment. Right now though, I would have to say: V. C. Andrews. She gave me great incite into the darkness of life. A real darkness, not the monsters and stuff you find in Anne Rice or Stephen King. The Heaven series was a great one in that regard. Seeing how real people can be so screwed up, and look just as normal as you and me, changed my view of the world in general. Took some of the rosy color out of the world.

Jess : Which of your characters would you most & least like to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Courtney : I would most like to have dinner with Gabriel from my book, "Shadow Warrior." I picture him as a Viking or maybe a gruff but handsome man from the highlands of Scotland. If you could get him to talk, it would be fun to see what he would say. Plus he’s kinda hot. I know for the teen reader, Gabriel is old, but to me an adult, he’s a gorgeous, buff, masculine guy. I would love for him to come to life and sit down at my table.

I would least like to invite Grandfather Staton, from my book, "A Howl in the Night." I have a snarky mouth at times. My luck it would get the best of me and he would go on the attack. Plus I don’t do the whole, “man is greater than woman” thing. That would get under my skin pretty quick!

Jess : Which character spoke the loudest to you when writing? Do any of them clamor to be heard over the others? Who is it, and from which book? What type of things do they say?

Courtney : A lot of my characters will chat me up now and then. I don’t mind in general, as it’s a great way to really connect with each of them. I know this sounds mental to un-writer people, but I promise we aren’t nuts. Well not about this anyway.

However, Abby, the main character, in my book, "A Howl in the Night," was loud as all heck! All the time. She would wake me up at night demanding to be heard. She would pester me while I was trying to do other things, like read. Her biggest problem was, that she didn’t like Derek. No, that’s not even accurate. There was a period there that she loathed him. If she’d had her way, he would have been neutered at one point. There was also a point at the end where she wanted to basically have a blood bath between the two clans of wolves. I wrote the scene for her and realized, it was too, too much.

Jess : What was the hardest part of writing "A Howl in the Night?"

Courtney : I am pretty good with horror and fantasy writing, but I struggle big time with the love parts. There I am, trying to put myself into the scene to see if it’s working and I get all giggly and embarrassed, and red in the face. I can feel the blush on my cheeks. Blood and guts no worries, a bit of touchy feely and Courtney freaks out. All in all it turned out pretty good (even if it’s me saying so) but man, that was rough.

Jess : If "A Howl in the Night" were to be made into a film, who do you see playing the main characters and why?

Courtney : Oh, great questions. I hadn’t even thought about a movie for this book. I would say Selena Gomez is still young enough to pull it off. Plus she has the dark hair already with the small form that Abby has. Oh! Miranda Cosgrove from iCarly. She would be great. She even has a good face for it. Yeah. I like her for the part.

Jess : Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

Courtney : Usually just a random thought pops in to my head and it takes off from there. Something like, “It would be so cool to shape shift into a wolf. Where do werewolves actually come from? Do they all get along?” Next thing you know, you have two warring clans, fighting over a female shape shifter, and taa daa, novel in motion.

Jess : Please describe your heroine, from "A Howl in the Night," in one to two sentences.

Courtney : Abigail Staton – A confident, yet strong willed, sixteen-year-old girl. She has a bit of a mouth now and then, but has a soft heart that surprises even her at times.

Jess : In regards to your most recent novel, if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Courtney : I am always second-guessing myself when it comes to my novels. For this one, I wonder if it should have been more violent in the end. I tried to hold back on too much violence as it is a teen novel, but I wonder if in doing so, I made it not violent enough.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Courtney : I have written four at this time.

"Shadow Dancer"
"Shadow Warrior"
"A Howl in the Night"
"Shadows End" (to release Fall 2012)

My current favorite is "Shadows End." I think its because I am neck deep in it right now with final edits as we get ready for release. I have gotten very attached to the characters of the Shadow Dancer Series and this book is the climax of that story. It has love. It has deception. It has murder, mayhem, and death. It’s a great story. I can’t wait for it to come out so that everyone can read it.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Courtney : I am currently writing a new story about angels and demons. Not much to tell at this point except that I found this old book of the bible (that had been removed by the church centuries ago) called "The Book of Enoch" about the fall of the angels from heaven. So I decided to write a story about one of the fallen. It has potential.

Jess : Have you ever gone out in public with your shirt on backwards, or your slippers on, and when realizing it, just said screw it?

Courtney : Yes, yes I have, more than once and many different silly things too. I once realized I needed to put on a slip under my white skirt as I could see in great detail, the little pink sunshines that covered my panties through my skirt. Then I got busy feeding the dogs, and getting the girls off to school that I completely forgot until I was out in public with the sunshines out for the world to see. That was a fun day... Not much you can do about it some days, so you just have to plod on and yes, say screw it.

Jess : If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Courtney : "Out of the darkness."
"From the bottom, up."
"Oopsy, sorry about that" (Ha! This one is the best if you know me at all).

Jess : What book are you reading now? How do you like it so far?

Courtney : "Blood Trails" by Sharon Sala (The Searchers Series). I’m only about 2 chapters in and...oh I hate to say it, but I am bored. I know if I can just get to the good stuff it will be great but yeah, slow start to this one. Too much back story.

"A Howl in the Night" by Courtney Rene

My Book Summary : Abigail (Abby) sixteenth birthday goes from promising to bad to worse in just a few hours. First, her best friend, Brian, announces that he's in love with her, yet she doesn't feel the same way about them, so they end up arguing. Second, she receives a birthday present from her father who she has never met and knows nothing about. Third, she finds out from her mother that her father is a werewolf. Which are all great ways to ruin her birthday and change her world forever, especially when her father decides on coming back into her and her mother's lives. Now she's thrust into a world she isn't prepared for and into the middle of a war between two werewolf clans that has been brewing for a while. Will she be able to get up to speed with the new changes in herself and her life before everything else around her comes crashing down? Is she the key to change everything for the better?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This fast-paced young adult novel is filled with unexpected twists that lead you to its surprise ending and wanting for more! Abby is a strong lead character who knows who she is (for the most part) enough to stay true to herself throughout this novel. Also, I really liked her spunk and resourcefulness when she dealt with all the changes coming at her.

Even though it worked well for the plot, I really hated how Abby's mother suddenly changed once Abby's father came into the picture. It made the novel harder for me to read since I couldn't get over the thought of 'how could she do that to her daughter?' Yet even because of that and the how slow the beginning was of this novel, it makes the middle and ending all the better!!

Since I typically read romance novels (yes, YA ones too) I was a bit surprised at how Abby went about her feelings for the men in her life. However, because of that it definitely makes you intrigued as to where she'll be going and whom she'll be with in the sequel to this novel whenever that'll come out. I really have high hopes for this series. =0)

I recommend this to anyone who likes paranormal romance/horror young adult novels!

Author's Novel Extras : Cover Reveal - A Howl in the Night | ...and then I thought, RADIO

Book Teaser(s) :
As I was closing the door, I heard her softly say, "Night," but I didn't respond back. I just closed the door and locked it.
Shadow was sprawled out on my bed like the King of Spain. It brought a smile to my face if not my heart. I shook my head and then turned out the lights. I crawled under the covers on my bed, shoving Shadow over a bit to get some room. I flung an arm over his warm body, buried my face against his furry side and slept.
I was not afraid. I was not alone. Shadow was enough for me, for the night. ~ within Chapter 5
Why did I even try? Because I needed to make him understand who I was, what I wanted...but then what? He would still be Derek the great and wonderful wolf, and I would still be stuck with him.
"Oh good. You need to remember that love is evil. It makes you weak. It makes you a fool. I mean, look at the first Staton Wolf. He was in love and look what it did for him?" Derek said.
"It wasn't love that made him an animal," I said.
"Yes, it was. It made him crazy and loose focus. No, I don't want love and neither should you."
I shrugged. "But I do want it," I said. "Where does that leave us?"
"Well, you have two years to get over it."
If only it was that simple. My wolf shifted under my skin, making me aware of her presence. She was both a curse and a gift. She was also going to be my salvation, if I could just figure out how to use her. ~ within Chapter 10

Book Excerpt :

“What’re you cooking?”

“I just got in, so nothing yet.”

I felt a bit confused for a moment, because I could smell something. It smelled salty and something else I couldn’t put my finger on. I tipped my head up a bit and sniffed the air. The smell was really strong and pungent in the kitchen. It was there somewhere.

“What’s that smell then?” Suddenly, I was starving.

She turned around and looked at me, but before she could answer, I spied a white package sitting partially unwrapped on the counter. I went over to it and pulled open the paper to see what smelled so good.

Inside was a chunk of bloody, raw meat. My stomach churned and flipped suddenly, not in sickness but in desire. My brain may have been saying eww gross, but for some reason my body was saying, oh yeah, give it to me now. I backed away from the counter. I had a feeling if I didn’t, I would have pounced on that slab of meat and chawed down on it, raw or not.

“What’s wrong?” Mom said, “It’s not for you, I promise. I have stuff to make pasta salad too. What else you in the mood for?”

I decided she didn’t really want to know the answer to that question.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the white paper, sitting there, unattended, smelling up the house with its heavenly scent.

Made the Grade: Cracked by Tara Logan

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 201 KB | Release Date: July 2012 | Publisher: Self-Published | Obtained: Smashwords

"Cracked" by Tara Logan

My Book Summary : Dailey “Wiggle It” Wood has been playing minor league baseball for a while now, but he has a feeling that he'll be moving up to the major league soon. However, his dreams of being a major league player look to be ending after he gets into a fender bender with Allarie's (Al) younger sister.

Al is a chiropractor who has been talked into helping Dailey for free so her sister won't have to call her insurance company and so Dailey's injury can be hidden so it won't hurt his chances for the majors. Nevertheless, as they help one another while pretending to be a couple they're both surprised by the chemistry that they have and evolves with each other. Can they or do they want to make their fake relationship into something more? On the other hand, will their past and their future plans get in the way?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars, this is a very cute novella about finding the right person for you and be willing to do what it takes to keep them. I liked Al and Dailey; they played off each other well. Al's family and Dailey's friends/players really entertained throughout this novella.

However, even though this was a novella I think the end of it just wrapped up to quickly for my liking. I just wish for a little bit more. Yet I did like the "epilogue." =0)

I recommend this to anyone looking for a fast-paced contemporary romance novella.

Book Teaser(s) :
He glanced back at the others who were still holding their sides. “What’s so funny?”
“The great Dailey Wood. Everyone knows you from baseball. So many women would kill to get in the seats you put the new girlfriend in. Right up front. Best seats in the house. But does she care about the game? You’ve been with some bubble headed blondes before, but this one takes it.”
Dailey stood there stunned. He thought the word would have been out that he took a classy and intelligent lady to the dinner last night. Strange that no one heard. How could anyone be under the impression she wasn’t the smarty pants that she was? “Bubble headed? She’s anything but that.”
“She yelled ‘touchdown’ so loud half the guys looked around to see if someone had been tackled.” At this he started laughing so hard he couldn’t stop. ~ within Chapter 5

"Blessed Homecoming" by Lorraine Nelson

Publication Released Date : July 13, 2012

Author's Book Description :

The hometown girl and the handyman both carry emotional baggage. Are they destined to remain friends, or is there room in their hearts for more?

    ***

Wendy Danforth is preparing to be a single mom with her ex-husband in jail for spousal abuse. She returns to her hometown to renew her faith and heal. Caught off guard by the handyman in residence, attraction hits, swift and piercing, but she quells her unruly emotions. She's in no hurry to get involved in another relationship. They become friends, and when her ex-husband escapes custody, Jake steps up to protect Wendy and her unborn child. Will the danger and close proximity test their friendship? Or will it lead to more? Can Jake regain his lost faith, or will it elude him forever?

Book Excerpt :

Jake sat on the step with his head in his hands, undecided whether to let her know he'd overheard or pretend ignorance. How could he ignore the pain she'd suffered? More surprisingly, he realized he wanted to be there for her, to prove that not every man was prone to acts of violence. Although, like her father, he had some thoughts on what he'd like to do to her ex if he ever had the chance.

She took the matter out of his hands when she sat a couple steps below him and, placing a hand on his knee, asked, "How much did you hear?"

His head jerked up, and he searched her eyes, expecting to see anger and disgust at his audacity, but there was none. "Pretty much all of it. I'm sorry, Wendy. I didn't intend to eavesdrop, but I didn't want to barge in on you either."

"Are you all right?"

"You're asking me? After all you've suffered, I should be asking you that question."

"My suffering ended the day he was found guilty. All that's left now is the sentencing in two weeks' time, and I don't need to be there for that."

"But you're expecting his child. How is that not suffering, considering what he put you through?"
"Every life is a gift from God. I don't always understand His methods, but at least I have one good thing resulting from a failed marriage."

"Did you love him that much?"

"At first, yes, very much. He was the man I'd always dreamed about, kind, caring, and it didn't hurt that he was gorgeous to boot." She smiled at the memory, and Jake felt a distinct twinge in his gut. Jealousy? No! Couldn't be.

"Love died a slow death when the abuse started. He always made me feel like it was my fault until the day I ended up in the hospital with a broken arm and didn't go back. I realized, then, my dreams of a happily ever after were never going to happen."

"What did you do? Where did you go?"

"A social worker at the hospital made a couple of calls and arranged a bed in a shelter for abused women. My arm being broken meant I couldn't work for a couple weeks, but when I returned, I found out from my boss, Emma, that he'd been haunting the place, waiting for me to show up. She'd had to call the police on a couple of occasions.

"She became my best friend. Emma encouraged me to lay charges and file a restraining order against him, which I did. I also filed for divorce. He didn't show up in court, didn't contest it, so the judge granted the petition based on the abuse."

"I would think so." He huffed in agreement.

"I saw Clyde around from time to time after that, and he never made any effort to approach me, for which I was thankful. But the night before the divorce became final, he showed up after I got home from work. The rest, as they say, is history."

"Can you really put it all behind you that easily?"

"Believe me, Jake, it hasn't been easy. Easy started yesterday when Mama met me at the bus stop with her arms wide open. Until then, I'd hoped, but wasn't at all certain of my welcome, circumstances being what they are."

He placed a hand over hers where it still rested on his knee. "For what it's worth, I'm glad you're here. You are one remarkably strong lady, and I'm honored to be your friend."

She felt the heat of a blush enter her cheeks at his soft-spoken words. "My faith is what's strong. I had to believe the Lord has a purpose for me in this life."

"Unearthed" [Duty Bound Series, Book 2] by J. S. Marlo

Publication Released Date : June 8, 2012

Author's Book Description :

Shaped by regrets. Bound by duty. Driven by secrets.

Rowan's future is jeopardized by the regrets she harbors and the deadly secrets she unearths.

    ***

Obligated to give up the man she loves, Rowan O'Reilly takes over Buccaneer Bed & Breakfast. Though her heart is in shambles, she is drawn to Avery Stone, a mysterious guest who reminds her of Bjorn...and everything she lost.

Haunted by a fatal decision, Avery escapes his past in Buccaneer's attic, but he can't ignore the previous owner's peculiar death, the strange bones exhumed by the spirited Rowan...or the annoying doctor vying for her attention.

As visitors wreak havoc on Buccaneer, Rowan stumbles onto deadly family secrets and unknowingly unearths a murderer. Yet nothing, not even the threat of her predecessor's fate, can stop her from digging for the truth.

Book Excerpt :

A cool breeze wafted through the open door of the garage. Alone with the bones that he and Jordan had spent the morning unearthing, Avery savored every drop of his latest Red Eye. The quiet solitude and the absence of guests suited his spirits. No one bothered him while he recreated his three little specimens. The dig had yielded two new skulls, confirming his belief he was dealing with two rabbits and a cat.

"I ran into Terry Jordan as he was leaving." From the doorway, Rowan looked at him with a haggard expression. "He told me you completed your collection."

Perspiration soaked her tank top, pasting the fabric to her chest, and mud caked the sides of her running shoes. The spirited woman wasn't self-conscious about her appearance. One more quality he admired about her, though he didn't like her ability to sneak up on him. Over the years, he'd relied on his sixth sense to warn him of someone's presence long before a noise betrayed the intruder, but for some obscure reason, Rowan shut down his inner alert system.

"Did you go running?"

"Made it to the marsh." In her hand, she held a glass half-filled with clear blue liquid. She took a mouthful. Droplets trickled down her chin, which she wiped against her collarbone. "Are you going to introduce me to the poor dead animals?"

He invited her to approach the table. "Meet Calvin, Cisco, and Rascal."

A bright smile accentuated the glow on her face. "Nice names." She scooped up Cisco's cranium and examined it from every angle. "I see markings on the frontal bone."

"Very observant." That she showed interest in the findings pleased him. "But you missed the ones at the back." He set aside his Red Eye to cup the skull. His fingers brushed her hand, and he relished the softness of her touch as he flipped the skull for a better view. "Here…and there." The tip of his index finger traced the shallow furrows.

"They don't resemble teeth marks."

"No teeth." The lines were too precise to be random animal bites. "A tool was used. Something like a pocketknife or—"

A spasm rocked Rowan's body. The skull and the glass slipped from her hands. He reached out for Cisco's remains but failed to catch the glass. It shattered on contact, spilling its contents on the cement floor.

"Her Unlikely Bodyguard" by Lorraine Nelson

Publication Released Date : June 15, 2012

Author's Book Description :

A stalker who wants revenge...a past flame rekindled...Jemma Leigh's summer just got interesting.
    ***

Jemma Leigh Harding has drawn the attention of an unknown stalker and returns to her hometown of Somerville, a safe haven—or so she thinks—on the east coast of Canada.

Theodore Garrity is the last person she expects to see, considering how easily he walked away from her after graduation to join the army.

Their past history involves secrets Jemma Leigh is hesitant to share. When it becomes clear the stalker has followed her home, Teddy becomes her unlikely bodyguard. Will the terror and past hurts separate them forever? Or will love blaze a fresh path for their future?

Book Excerpt :

Jemma Leigh quickly grew aware of Teddy's heated gaze. Her own increasing desire for this man decided her next words. "You know, he probably won't show up until tomorrow afternoon at the very earliest. We're probably wasting a few hours that could be better spent doing other things," she suggested. "After all, Jim would alert us if there's anything unusual going on."

"True enough. What would you suggest?" he asked, and she watched as his eyes raked over her from top to bottom. "I'm easy."

"Yes, I seem to remember that about you." She giggled as she walked toward him, trying to appear sexy, but her muscles were stiff and sore from disuse. Her cast, thankfully, replaced with an air boot for support, made getting around a lot less cumbersome. She stopped a couple feet in front of him, pulling her tank top up and over her head in one graceful move. His surprised gaze drank in the site of her, and his eyes darkened with desire. Satisfied, she turned her back and requested, "A little help here."

"Always my pleasure to help a damsel in distress." He quoted her earlier words as he unfastened the hook on her bra, freeing her breasts to fall into his greedy hands as she felt herself being pulled backward toward him.

"This probably isn't a wise move, Jemma Leigh."

Maybe not, but loving you is all I can think of now that we're truly alone.

Jemma Leigh felt the hardness of his shaft as it pulsed against her derrière. It had been so long since he'd held her like this. If things go wrong, I don't want to go to my grave without loving this kind and gentle man one more time. "I don't care whether it's wise or not. Love me, Teddy. Make love to me like you used to. Help me forget everything but you, if only for a little while."

"Ah, Jemma Love, what if he hopped a plane and rented a vehicle? We need to be alert. We can't do this, not here, not now, as much as it pains me to say so."

"Yes, we can. How can I be alert to the danger when all I can think of is you? Remembering how it felt to have you inside me, moving as one, has drove me crazy all summer. We're alone now. Just you and me. Don't let him destroy what we could be to each other," she said, turning into his embrace and taking the opportunity to run her hand up and down the ridge of his shaft. "It's been so long, Teddy. There's never been anyone but you for me." Standing awkwardly on tiptoe, she kept most of her weight on her good foot and kissed him, summoning all the passion she had stored up over the years.

Suddenly, he lifted her in his arms and carried her down the hall to her bedroom. Setting her on her feet, he asked, "Are you sure about this? If I need to stop, it has to be now."

"Don't stop." She pushed her jeans down over her hips, baring herself to his view as she finally stepped out of them. She stood boldly before him in the near darkness, clad only in silky thong panties. "Make me yours, Teddy. Let me feel you inside me once again."

"All For a Dead Man’s Leg" [Tour Director Extraordinaire Series, Book 1] by R. Ann Siracusa

Publication Released Date : June 1, 2012

Author's Book Description :

Meet Harriet Ruby, a well-balanced MIT graduate with a degree in languages, whose life has been good but ordinary and predictable. Wanting new experiences before she settles down to a career and family, she accepts a position as a tour director in Europe.

Meet Will Talbot, a handsome Europol spy and covert operative for the US government with a dark troubled past, major trust issues, and dissociative amnesia. Driven by guilt over something he believes he did, he has a penchant for rescuing innocent victims caught up in dangerous circumstances.

Harriet’s first solo stint as a tour director in Spain and Morocco is going well until they get lost in the medina in Tangier. There, one of her tourists becomes ill. Harriet needs to find a doctor, can’t speak Arabic, and doesn’t know how to get out of the walled city. A handsome and mysterious stranger, Will Talbot, examines the tourist, pronounces him dead, and offers to help her smuggle the body out of Morocco. At this moment, Harriet’s once-predictable life turns upside down. Little does she know that getting out of Morocco is only the beginning of an incredible adventure in pursuit of murders, smugglers, terrorists, and a meaningful relationship.

Book Excerpt :

Looking back on it, I could see everything would have worked out fine if Archie Philpot hadn't chosen that particular time and place to die.

Not that he did it maliciously, mind you, nor did he exactly choose. But I'm sure if he'd thought about the welfare of the many—our tour group, to be specific—as opposed to the convenience of the one, he might have staved off the event for another ten or twelve hours. Then there would have been no problem.

Well, not exactly no problem.

But perhaps I should start when everything began to fall apart.

My name is Harriet Ruby, Tour Director Extraordinaire. Or so I'd thought. I had just begun to believe my first solo stint in Europe was a roaring success when we got lost in the medina—the ancient walled city—in Tangier.

"Let's stop here for a moment," I called to my tour group.

While they assembled, I glanced around at the souk, the market place within the city walls. It was a maze of tiny shops, tents, and winding passageways crowded with Moroccans.

"I'm never going to find my way out of here." I pulled out my cell phone and punched in my driver's number. Mario knew the route and spoke Arabic, but he had gone to fix a flat tire on our bus while I herded our fourteen tourists around the medina. That was two hours ago.

No answer.

Harriet, this does not bode well for your goal of a long and successful career in the tour business.

With the back of my hand, I swiped at the perspiration popping out on my brow. "Please stay right here and don't go anywhere. I'll be right back."

All of them smiled and nodded. Grimacing, I hurried to one of the tea shops we had passed to look for someone who spoke English. No luck. I was only gone for two or three minutes, I swear—well, maybe it was five or six—but when I returned to the place where I had left my tourists, they were gone.

This was not starting out to be a good day.

"Mez Harri Boobies!" The shrill cry sliced through the confusion of sweating bodies crowding the market. An arm shot out of nowhere, and a brown hand clamped my wrist. I swallowed my shriek of surprise. Tangier was rife with hands that grabbed at foreigners.

"Mez Harri Boobies, you come queek," the man whispered in my ear. "Mezter Pillpot no good, yes? You come."

"It's R-u-b-y, not Boobie." I repeated my name for Mr. Takamura, one of the three almost-English-speaking Japanese tourists in the small group I was directing through Spain and Morocco. While my name was not destined to be in lights on Hollywood marquees, for the past twenty-four years, it had served me well enough. I had a sentimental attachment to it.

Without a reply, he released my arm. Insinuating his slight body into the crush of street peddlers, dirty children, and veiled ladies, he moved quickly out of sight. With a deep sigh, I tucked my Adventure Seekers sign under my arm and followed him, devastated by the foreboding that I would be nicknamed "Hairy Boobies" for the rest of my career as a tour director, which might not be very long after this little incident.

He penetrated farther into the ancient market through twisted, narrow passageways filled with malodorous bodies and a myriad of colors rippling in the heat—red, blue, amber, purple of clothing, goods for sale, food, tents. In pursuit, I skirted white-robed Moroccans bartering for goods, men sipping mint tea, and women painting the hands of girls with rich sienna-colored henna. The humid air, replete with an exotic mixture of scents—ginger, curry, rare perfumes, cigarette smoke, donkey dung—stirred my senses. The crowd babbled in many languages, counterpoint to the lilting melody of the seruani pipes.

"Wait!" How in the world had they gone this far in such a short time?

He hesitated for an instant, turned, and waved. Then he disappeared again. Finally, Mr. Takamura stopped in a small plaza with a colorful tiled fountain in the center, a calm refuge in the midst of chaos. In stray beams of sunlight, tiny motes of dust danced in the thick atmosphere. The Japanese gentleman waited for me to catch up, then smiled and bowed.

My gaze followed his nod. "Ohmigod!"

Archibald Philpot of London, the eldest and most distinguished of my tourists, knelt doubled over the lip of the fountain, hurling his guts. Oh, boy.

My tourists—three American and two Swedish couples and the other two Japanese—watched with helpless concern on their faces while a growing knot of Moroccans glared at us, mayhem glinting in their dark eyes.

The disbelief and thin-lipped anger on their faces indicated they were not pleased about the desecration of what was probably their water supply. I couldn't blame them. This could get dicey. A drop of sweat dribbled into my eye.

Edith Johnson, a ditzy fiftyish blonde trying to look thirty, was the first to see me. She clapped her hand to her bosom and cried, "Thank goodness you're here, Harriet. Do something."

Who, me?

I dropped down beside Archie. His complexion was grayish-green, his rheumy eyes were glazed over, and by the stench, I guessed the poor man might have a case of diarrhea. My stomach heaved. Swallowing hard, I managed to maintain my tour director decorum. This was definitely not in my job description.

Book Excerpt :

"We have to talk." His tone dripped with tension.

She turned to him. "I've had enough bad news for this week. Whatever it is can wait a couple of minutes."

He looked irked and worried, and he avoided her gaze. The moment seemed to stretch forever and Nate ran his hand over the back of his neck. Eventually, he nodded.

She indicated for him to sit at the kitchen table and pulled out the leftover lasagna Petra had brought over that morning. She popped it into the oven.

"I hope you like lasagna," she said in an attempt to start a normal conversation.

"Did you make it?"

"No." She sat across from him. "Petra did."

Why was Nate so tense? She was curious to know what he intended to tell her, but given the pained expression on Nate's face, she was also scared. From the look in his eyes, it wasn't going to be something she wanted to hear.

"So anything new about the case?"

He shook his head. Her attempt at conversation failed.

It wasn't until after dinner as Jordan washed the dishes that Nate spoke. "We have to talk."

Jordan turned to face him, the damp rag from drying the plates hung in her hands. "Can't it wait?"

"No." He stood, and walked closer to her, his stance powerful. He looked dangerous. His eyes were cold, hard, the look in them hollow and heartbroken.

She didn't expect to hear any good news so she braced for the worst. "What is it?"

Nate sighed deeply, as though stalling what he had to say. "I can't see you ever again."

Idolizing In: The Reckless Brides Series, Book 1

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 353; Kindle Edition - File Size: 638 KB | Expected Release Date: July 31, 2012 | Publisher: St. Martin's Press | Obtained: NetGalley

"Almost a Scandal" [The Reckless Brides Series, Book 1] by Elizabeth Essex

My Book Summary : Sarah (Sally) has never been what you would call a typical girl since she loves the sea. Being from an old navy family---with her father and two of her older brother's already Royal Navy captains, and her other two older brothers on their way to being captains themselves---you could say it's in her blood. Therefore, when her younger brother, Richard, decides to run away from his duty of becoming a midshipman Sally chooses to don his clothes and pose as him instead. This way she can keep her family's honor in tacked and be able to experience a freedom, she would never be able to have as herself, a girl.

However, in doing so she will need to be able to live and correctly/purposefully lie to the Captain of her ship and about two hundred and sixty-odd men. Will her charade work? Will she experience and enjoy the freedom she earns and has never had before?

In addition, while Sally's at it will she be able to keep her heart in check when it comes to First Lieutenant Colyear a family friend and the only man who knows of her secret on the ship...

My Book Review : 5 out of 5 stars, this fun, courageous, and delightful novel will take you on an intriguing ride through the life of a British sailor in the 1800s. I loved how this novel evolves--from Sally boarding the ship trying to hide her identity, to her being in the thick of the crew, getting into fights about shipmates treatment, to the growing love affair between Sally and Col all the while being right in the middle of a war. I could not get enough of this novel! I especially enjoy how Sally wasn't a wuss when it came to her duty and the action on deck or that she wasn't impervious to any causalities of her own, no matter how small. Definitely, a fast-paced and action-packed novel keeps you on your toes.

Now I cannot wait until book 2 of this series, "A Breath of Scandal" with the hero being William Jellicoe, comes out in December 2012!! I also hope that it'll either have Sally & Col play secondary parts or at least update you of them in that novel. =0)

I HIGHLY recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical romance!!! I hope you'll enjoy it as much (if not more but that's unlikely) as I do! *hahaa*

Book Teaser(s) :
Teaser #1 ~ within Chapter 1
"Mr. Kent, you are an abominable liar."
The desperation of wanting something so uncertain was a physical thing, a pain that added to the cat's-paw of misery coiled deep in her gut. She could only answer with the truth.
"Thank you, sir. For I have no wish to be a good one. I only wanted to make sure we're to sail immediately."
"Outrunning creditors, are you, Mr. Kent? Or some young lady's family?"
Sally would have laughed if she hadn't suddenly felt so near tears. She was definitely outrunning some lady's family---her own. Be he must be teasing her---the cool green of his eyes had warmed to a luminous jade. "No, sir," she assured him as firmly as she could. "Nothing of the kind." ~ within Chapter 4
There wasn't much vanity in that, but it bothered him, for not the first time, to think of her living so intimately with other men. Most women only ever saw their own husbands shave themselves, if even that. In the cockpit, and even in the gunroom, she had been in the company of men routinely stripped to their waists. Perhaps even naked in front of her. Every day for weeks.
And what about her?
His curiosity got the best of him. ~ within Chapter 15

Blog Tour - Made the Grade: Blind Heat by Nara Malone | Review & Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Nara Malone, with a review of her latest novel "Blind Heat," which is the 2nd book in her Pantherian Passions Series!!

ALSO -- Be sure to comment on this post to be able to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAYs (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from July 23 - 27, 2012]

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 462 KB | Expected Release Date: May 2012 | Publisher: Ellora's Cave | Obtained: Goddess Fish Promotions

"Blind Heat" [Pantherian Passions Series, Book 2] by Nara Malone

My Book Summary : After being on the run from her father for years, Allison (Allie) has carved out a life and friends for herself that she likes and doesn't want to give it up. Because of that Allie, tries to distance herself from anything that could be considered illegal in any way or from any man or "friend" that she considers could cause her trouble. Therefore, when she meets Marcus for the "first time" at the local park she knows right away that he's nothing but trouble. Yet, even though she knows better than to get involved with Marcus she is undeniably drawn to him.

Marcus is a shifter who, unlike most of his kind, is living among humans. Another reason he's different from his kind is because of his compassion to the hybrids (animals who have been given human brain capabilities) that he rescues from labs close to where he lives. However, the reason he first "stalks" Allie is because after one recent rescue he misplaces the pregnant cat he was rescuing and he believes that Allie has the cat. Yet every time that he tried to talk to her about "his lost cat," it seems that she ignores him. So, when they "meet" in the park he is surprised about their intense connection as much as Allie is. The only thing they both come to realize after their meeting in the park is that Allie suffers from face blindness, which is why she keeps meeting Marcus over and over.

When Marcus offers a way for Allie to overcome her face blindness she reluctantly agrees. Not long after they begin their "training," Marcus feels that there is a lot more to Allie then meets the eye. The question is will Allie be able to accept her uniqueness once it becomes apparent to her or will she strive for her "normal" world again?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars, this mysterious and playful novel wraps you up within the intense and intriguing world that the author created. Allie and Marcus play off of each other so well. I especially loved their personal growth with each other. Plus, the secondary characters were so fun!! I can't wait to find out what will happen to Jake, Ben, Maya, Seth, and the rest of Marcus' friends and family!! Mostly Jake since he just seems so sweet and cuddly that I hope he'll end up with someone good, I suspect Allie's sister.

With that being said, the only thing I didn't enjoy about this novel was Allie's constant denial about her feelings and how when she got to nervous, about either her feelings or the actions of those around her, the first thing she did was run away/separate herself from that person or place. It just got a little redundant after a while, even while I understood a bit of her resistance to change.

Overall, it was because of the full cast of characters within this series that made me like the novel as much as I did. And because of that, I would recommend this series to anyone who likes paranormal romances with a new twist on the "typical" shifter stories.

Author's Novel Extras : Blind Heat Games

Author's Book Trailer :

Book Teaser(s) :
He was staring at her with a look that was like being lost and found all at once. She tried to make sense of that impression. His reaction resonated in her, a fluttering high in her stomach that quickly settled into a calm that rippled outward, as if something important had found the place it belonged.
His fingers were in her hair, at first just a brush of fingertips, pushing a lock back from her face, but then curling in the soft depths and a fist followed. The tug of it went past the roots of her hair and into her belly, deeper than that, into a place she couldn’t acknowledge. She had to bite her lip to hold in an answering moan.
“Who are you?” he murmured, as if he was asking himself instead of her. ~ within Chapter 4
She was done playing his games.
But the idea had already taken root. It would feel so good.
“The man is a fucking sadist,” she gritted out between chattering teeth. ~ within Chapter 8

Book Excerpt :

The greatest threats from a man were injury or death. She’d known how to read those kinds of threats in a man before she was old enough to read a book. She could see no intent to harm. No evil. He looked at her as if he’d discovered something precious. A warmth seemed to reach from his eyes into her soul, drawing her closer. She made her choice.

The red cloth shimmered with an aura of passion, dared her to press her body to it. The thought sent her blood zinging through her veins. There was something there, something irresistible. His eyes spoke promises she could feel. Her feet wouldn’t let her turn away, but took the risk. Took one step. Then the next. Her lips burned with a need to glide over his jawline, explore planes and angles with kisses and nips. Her heart hammered so loud he had to hear it even over the rain.

True to his word, he didn’t move an inch until she was right there in front of him, reaching to press her hands to the shirt, feel its heat, prove he was real. Her palms sighed with pleasure, like the fabric was a meal to be savored. His strong fingers closed around her wrist then, not painfully but with the finality of a manacle, reminding her that he’d said he wouldn’t let her go until he had what he wanted.

“Good girl,” he whispered, soothing away the little trill of fear that rose with his touch, stroking her face with the backs of his fingers. Her body sang like chimes in the wind, notes shivering down her spine.

“I won’t stop at a kiss,” he said. “But you can start with one. Make it sweet.”

She rose obediently to her toes, finding his lips, feeling them firm, parting under hers. He ordered and demanded with such a low, seductive tone. If he’d told her to go rob the jewelry store, in just the same way, it would have seemed a good idea.

He shifted, turning quickly so she was between him and the tree, cutting off any chance to change her mind and run. He held her face between his hands, and her own hands felt small and fragile against the breadth of his. He kissed his desire into her. Her mind grappled to reassert caution, but her thoughts slipped away, formless as water spilling through fingers. He didn’t stop kissing until she stopped thinking, until the rigidity in her muscles softened, until she kissed him back.

He tasted like spring rain.

His hands were warm through her soggy shirt, his fingers curved under her chilled breasts, his thumbs stroking over the tops. Thumbs and fingers came together, squeezing until she squirmed. His lips and tongue moved over her neck, tracing the line of her collarbone, a warm, sensual touch that made her whimper. He split the worn cotton with a sharp twist. The ripping sound jolted her. Her shirt split down the center, parting to offer her breasts. A wave of fear welled in her belly. of desire trickled between her thighs. She glanced down the puddled path. He pressed her tighter against the tree.

“You had your chance,” he whispered. “It’s the last I’m willing to give you for a while.”

    Book Teaser:
Col nearly smiled. As it was, he was obliged to look out the stern gallery at the rain, and swallow hard to keep down the laugh that threatened to rise in his throat. His memories of the youngest Kent, along with Matthew's letters, had put him in expectation of a reedy, whining sort of boy. The specimen in front of him was lean, straight, and unflinching in comparison to what Col had expected. But, he had to admit, with his mischievous urchin's face, he was a pretty sort of boy. ~ within Chapter 1
