Feasted On: A Lion’s Pride Series, Book 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 1641 KB | Release Date: June 4, 2015 | Publisher: Self-Published | Obtained: Amazon.com

"When An Alpha Purrs" [A Lion’s Pride Series, Book 1] by Eve Langlais

Author's Book Description : A lion’s pride isn’t defined only by those he commands but also resides with his hair, so when a human dares to butcher Arik’s mane, he gets his revenge—and claims her as his mate.

A billionaire CEO and leader of the largest East Coast pride, Arik is a ladies man and a lion. Used to commanding others, and obedience, he can’t believe it when a hairdresser with tempting curves chops off a hunk of his precious mane.

But her biggest mistake is in running from him.

Run as fast as you can, little mouse, because this cat loves to chase—and pounce.

Oh, and he also likes to nibble on tender bits. What he doesn’t expect is to fall for a human woman, a woman who can make the impossible happen because everyone knows lions can’t purr…until now.

A Lion’s Pride Series: Each can be read as stand a alone.
  • "When an Alpha Purrs"
  • "When a Beta Roars"
  • "When an Omega Snaps"

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Two very stubborn people find one another, feel a pull for one another, and both are reluctant to let go. The only trouble is that one of them is human while the other just happens to be a werelion. Add in a psycho ex-boyfriend and you have an already completed situation turned into something a whole lot worse. Will Kira (mouse) listen to her instincts/heart to try and get to know Arik better or will she scurry away at the first chance she gets?

This unusual matchup between Kira & Arik made this a fun flirty, while slightly suspenseful, novel to read. Ms. Langlais does it again! With entertaining banter and a dynamic cast of characters, it leaves the readers a little something for everyone. Playful, erotic, and a little suspense perfect if you want a quick paranormal read.

I found Kira’s sneaky escape tactics to be acceptable because of the type of character she portrayed, which is a strong heroine who fights her own battles but only when she believes she’ll have a fighting chance. Arik is a cocky bastard in the best since of the way. He knows who he is, the leader of his pride, and because of that—and more—he has an innate ability to make his chauvinistic-self sound charming. Together this couple makes a great pair! Able to banter and talk everything out while delightfully riling each other up, with these two “fate” chose well.

I recommend this novel to those who are fans of Ms. Langlais and/or like flirty paranormal romances!

Idolizing In: A Familiar Face by Marie Harte

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 184 KB | Release Date: August 2011 | Publisher: Self-Published | Obtained: Amazon.com

"A Familiar Face" by Marie Harte

My Book Summary : Things have not been going well for Mallory, a witch, who doesn't have much money so she can't afford a decent familiar and is close to losing her apartment. This is why she has no problem taking up an extra shift at The Python Palace where she’s a part-time waitress when her boss, Rattler, asks her too. However, once the shift is over all she wants to do is get off of her feet and fall asleep, so Rattler tells her to go up to The Lounge, a special area that not many are allowed into, to get some rest. After complying and waking up from her nap, Mallory finds herself in a completely different world and within the midst of a war. In addition, her captor just happens to resemble Rattler enough to be his twin and lights a passion within her that she has never felt before. Nevertheless, even as she helps out these people around her (some wanting that help and some not), does she really want to give up everything from where she came from or should she go home??

My Book Review : 5 out of 5 stars!! WOW!! This novel exceeded my expectations and then some! It's a sexually driven, fast-paced, match made from heaven or a little club known as The Python Palace, novel that enthralled me into wishing there was more to read about!!

About the Characters:
• Mallory: Sarcastic, funny, sweet, and very playful. A witch who knows how to fight like the best of them. One who might not be much in her own world but means quite a bit in Core's world.

• Core: Clever. A strong leader. A wonderful fighter. Very protective of Mallory.

• Rattler: Mysterious. Bossy. A god??

I can't say enough about this book! I had great delight in reading about Core's abilities--from his true self to his sexual ability. Plus, the banter between Mallory and Core is entertaining just by itself! Then you throw in the mysteriousness about Core's world, how Mallory can help out in the war, and everything that has to do with Rattler, making it very hard for me to put this book down.

I recommend it to anyone who enjoys sexually focused (sort of), adventurous (definitely), paranormal (to the extreme) novels!!

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : In Plain Sight

Book Teaser(s) :
"This cannot be happening. Frank the rat, MacNafee, a double shift.... And to cap it off with the best sex of my life with Rattler's twin? No way."
"His twin?" Core couldn't help but preening at the off-hand compliment. "Best sex of your life?"
"Look, I'm in crisis here," she barked.
He grinned. ~ within Chapter 3

Guest Post :: Mysteries and More by Jenna Bennett | Small Business Saturday

In honor of Small Business Saturday (today--November 24th) I'm hosting guest posts by author's wanting to support a favorite local business of theirs! So, here is a post by Jenna Bennett, author of "Tall, Dark, and Divine," about her favorite local bookstore!!

Mysteries and More

Let me tell you a little story.

Once upon a time, there was a young lady named Mary. A very lovely young thing, with soft blonde hair and a sweet smile and all that.

(No, this isn’t a romantic story. She was married. His name was Greg. He was dashing and handsome. They had a couple kids too, but that doesn’t figure into this, except peripherally.)

To continue:

Mary loved to read.

She loved it so much, she got a job in a bookstore, so she could be around books all day.

She read everything, the way people who love to read do, but what she particularly liked to read were mysteries.

Like Agatha Christie and Elizabeth Peters and Carolyn Hart.

Ah, yes. Carolyn Hart.

The Death on Demand series, about Annie and Max Darling, and their mystery bookstore – Death on Demand – in South Carolina.

You know a mystery reader who works in a bookstore is gonna lo-o-o-ove Death on Demand, don’t you?

Fast forward a few years, and that lovely girl and her dashing husband retired, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

And guess what they did?

Yup, they opened their very own Death on Demand!

Only it’s called Mysteries and More.

That’s right: I’m talking about Nashville’s only mysteries-only bookstore: Mysteries and More in Lenox Village, and its owners, Mary and Greg Bruss: that sweet young thing herself, and her dashing and handsome husband.

Ask any writer who’s ever been to visit, and they’ll tell you it’s the second most magical place on earth, right after Disneyland. And maybe the North Pole.

Like the name implies, there are mysteries... new ones and old ones, vintage ones and previously loved ones. Adult mysteries, young adult mysteries, kid mysteries.

All kinds of mysteries, by practically any author you can imagine. Certainly a lot I’ve never heard of.

But there aren’t only mysteries. There’s more.

See, Mary likes books, but Greg likes other stuff.

Much of it quite... interesting.

Remember those mystery role-playing parties we used to have back in the 80s?

No, me either, but you can buy the games there.

Fancy a copy of Clue! The Movie? They’ve got it.

And you can buy notepads with old Nancy Drew covers on the front.

And BandAids that look like crime scene tape.

Knife sharpeners that look like dead people. (No, I’m not kidding. I bought one.)

Mystery themed jewelry.

Christmas cards with the likeness of Edgar Allen Poe.

In fact, in honor of the season, I think someone deserves a box of Christmas cards with the likeness of Edgar Allen Poe. In a puffy parka. With a red scarf around his neck. And a raven holding a sign saying “The North Poe.”

Who wants it?

About the Business :

    If you’re ever in Nashville, don’t forget to stop in at Mysteries and More, on Sunnywood Drive in Lenox Village. Greg and Mary are never too busy to hang out and talk mysteries. But if you don’t have any plans to visit Nashville, you can find them and their store on the web, at www.mysteriesandmore.net.

Blog Tour - Made the Grade: Trinity Bound by Carrie Ann Ryan | Interview, Review, & Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Carrie Ann Ryan, who I interviewed about her latest novel "Trinity Bound," which is the 3rd book in Redwood Pack Series!!

ALSO -- Be sure to comment on this post to be able to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAYs (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from April 2 - 13, 2012]

My Q&A with Carrie Ann Ryan :

Jess : Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Carrie Ann : Hi! Thank you for having me here today! I’m a twenty-six year old paranormal romance author by night and a chemist by day. But while I do all that, I’m a romance lover at heart.

Jess : How long have you been a published author? And what has being an author been like for you?

Carrie Ann : My first book, "An Alpha’s Path," came out Dec 1st, 2011. For me, it doesn’t seem real. I love writing and reading romance. But it’s so weird (in a fabulously amazing way) to have people email and Facebook me that they’ve read my work...and actually like it! LOL

Jess : Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Carrie Ann : Most? Maddox. I love him. My crit partner, Lia Davis, and I will have a bare-knuckle fight over him one day. But it will totally be worth it! (And Lia, I’d SO win. LOL)

Least? Corbin. Have you met the guy? *shudders* He creeps me out more than the demon, Caym. I re-read some of Corbin’s scenes after I write them and shudder.

Jess : What sparked the idea for your most recent novel, "Trinity Bound?"

Carrie Ann : While writing "A Taste for a Mate," Reed came out to me. Literally. I didn’t know he was bi until he told Willow that day in his art’s studio. And then I couldn’t decide who Reed should be with since I thought he would always be with Hannah. But the two of them needed someone else.

And that’s how I found Josh. *sigh* I love Josh.

Jess : If you had to describe Hannah, Reed, & Josh (from "Trinity Bound") in one word, what would it be?

Carrie Ann : Reed: Heart

Hannah: Soul

Reed: Strength

All Three: Stronger.

Jess : Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

Carrie Ann : I’m a character author. I find out which characters are in my head and then the story comes to me. At least that’s how it’s worked out so far.

Jess : What is your latest published book? And if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Carrie Ann : "Trinity Bound" came out just about a week ago. And I don’t think I’d change anything about it. I really love this book.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Carrie Ann : I have written four books and am halfway through two more. Right now..."Trinity Bound" is my favorite. Mostly because it was the first time that all my characters actually spoke to me then ENTIRE time. Plus, I think I found who I was as a writer by this point. Which is always a plus.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Carrie Ann : Soooo many! Next up is "A Night Away," book 3.5 in the Redwood Pack series. I wanted to write a Kade and Mel novella so everyone could see how they were doing. That comes out May 1st.

I’m also writing "Dust of My Wings," book 1 in the Dante’s Circle series. It’s a book about an angel, Shade, who needs to reclaim his dust to protect the secrets of the supernaturals. However, a human lab tech, Lily, may stand in his way.

The entire Dante’s Circle series is set in a world where the humans aren’t really human...but they don’t know it. It will take something drastic to change that. And it just might happen.

Jess : Which question are you most sick of answering in interviews??

Carrie Ann : My favorite author. I know, I know. It’s one of the questions I always ask because sometimes I get an answer. But I have over 100 favorite authors...I love them all! LOL

"Trinity Bound" [Redwood Pack Series, Book 3] by Carrie Ann Ryan

My Book Summary : Towards the end of "A Taste for a Mate" Reed sacrificed himself to be captured by the Centrals so his sister-in-law, Willow, wouldn't be caught by them again. Therefore, "Trinity Bound" begins with Reed chained and hurt within the Centrals dungeon with a woman, Hannah, who Reed knows is his mate and plans on doing anything he can to protect her from their captors. However, even though he feels that Hannah is his mate, he also feels like there is something missing too.

Hannah is an earth witch, who has just lost everything when the Centrals took her (from them killing her mother to destroying her shop), and has the rare ability to heal. So even though she has been with the Centrals for a few weeks already, when she sees Reed take beating after beating on her behave, she can't help but want to heal him. Soon they both find a way to help each other within their captivity but they still need to find a way to escape....

Josh is an ex-SEAL and a human who is already aware of the supernatural world because of his own rare ability to be able to Find people. So, when he hears two teenagers talking about how Hannah and Reed were taken into the Centrals den, he suddenly has a desire that he needs to find them no matter what. However, when he gets to rescue them he gets more than he expected. Josh realizes that they are mates yet he desires them both, even though he's never had feelings (sexual or otherwise) for guys before.

Reed knows as soon as he meets Josh in the dungeon that Josh is that something missing he was looking for. Josh is Reed's other mate. Will all of them be able to deal with living in a Trinity Bond? Will they even want to, even if Reed doesn't want to let either of them go? And when the Centrals' demon decides to hurt, what might be going on between all of them, will they be able to make it through it all together or will they end up losing someone they are all starting to love?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars, fall into the middle of the Centrals den with Hannah, Reed, & Josh where you'll find out what it means to be and have a mate that you'll do anything for at, almost, any cost. This dynamic trio encompasses a wonderful chemistry that is combustible and endearing at the same time. So much so, that you root for them throughout this novel.

When reading this book I kept being reminded of Lee Brice's song "A Woman Like You" because it's a song about what he would do if he never met his wife, which is the basic theme (that I saw) throughout this novel. Since even though Josh, Hannah, & Reed are all interested in each other, their relationship seems to be moving too quickly for some of them, then to add in their personal insecurities/demons and/or dealing with what society thinks should be the norm, they all have to overcome those things to be able to want to be together. So, that song kind of wraps up this novel for me in a way of saying, "I'd rather be with you then be without you," which is what Reed keeps stressing and trying to prove to both Josh & Hannah throughout the book.

The characters in this novel, old and new, are wonderful to read about!! Of course, I loved the main characters, Reed especially. However, I liked (as always) getting the update on the rest of the Jamenson clan. Plus, getting to hear about Mel & Willow's babies. Then to top it off about what I'm hoping will happen for Maddox and a certain girl that just joined their ranks, made me very happy to read the updates going on in the Redwood Pack.

With that being said, I HIGHLY recommend this book to those who already like the Redwood Pack Series!! And for anyone who hasn't read this series yet then I'd tell you that if you like paranormal/werewolf romances then this is the series for you!!

Book Teaser(s) :
Teaser #1
“Wait,” Josh interrupted. “Cailin is the baby at twenty-three?”
“I told you I’m almost a century—ninety-eight actually. Cailin’s still our baby sister. And with six older brothers she doesn’t forget it.” Reed gave a smile only a big brother bent on terrorizing his younger sister could give.
Or at least that’s what Josh thought a look of terrorizing one’s little sister would look like. He didn’t have any siblings to really know.
“Wow, I’m only twenty-five. You must think I’m a toddler.” Hannah looked troubled at this thought, but didn’t bite her lip.
Reed reached out and held her hand. “It’s not the same thing at all. Cailin and you are both adults. It’s just Cailin’s my sister, while you are definitely not.” Reed smiled, and Josh felt as though he was intruding.
“And you’re pretty close to my age—twenty-nine.” Josh pointed to himself with a ladle.
“Well thank the goddess for that.” Hannah said. “I guess we’ll just have to be careful with the old man over here.”
Reed looked on in mock-outrage. ~ within Chapter 8

Book Excerpt :

Reed planted his feet, his fists clenched. Josh did the same on the other side of her, yet with a gun in one hand and a blade in another. As a human, he would need all the protection he could get. A gun wouldn’t necessarily kill the beasts, but it would slow them down. And frankly, he looked damn sexy all armored up. Reed too, with his natural charisma.

And, totally not the time again to let her thoughts wonder.

But what a place they would go.

Hannah gave a nod to both men and closed her eyes, calling to the Earth. She may be a Healer, but she could still go on the offensive with the Earth and kick ass if she had too. Well, at least she hoped he could. She’d trained with her mother – Hannah held back that sharp pain of loss – but she really hadn’t used it, and tiredness ached her bones.

Another wolf’s howl echoed in the not too far distance. Hannah concentrated and moved her arms like an orchestra conductor to take a large pile of soil, rocks and roots in her hold. The resulting mass looked like a crested wave and slammed into the wolves trying to come from behind in a sneak attack.

Stupid wolves. Didn’t they know she could feel them when they trampled heavy-footed on her Earth?

Josh and Reed each granted her a look of pleasant surprise, then a sexy smile.

They’d underestimated her. They wouldn’t do it again.

Blog Tour - Made the Grade: The de Montforte Brothers Series, Book 1 by Danelle Harmon | Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Danelle Harmon, who is talking about the top things that make a great historical romance hero!

ALSO -- Be sure to comment on this post to be able to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAYs (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from July 23 - August 3, 2012]

What are the top 5 things that make a great historical romance hero and why? :

First off, I'd like to take the time to thank you, Jess, for hosting me on your blog today!

You ask a wonderful and thought provoking question, and one that I'm happy to answer. In real life, true heroes can seem to be few and far between, and often "too good to be true." We all know of the drop-dead-handsome guy who is as unfaithful as the day is long, leaving a trail of broken hearts in his wake. We all know of the recklessly courageous man whose constant need for an adrenalin rush makes him unavailable and undependable. We all know of the sweet guy who is as kind as the day is long, but lacks courage and allows the world to walk all over him. Perfection (so to speak) is seldom found in the real world, and mature people will take the good with the bad (as we hope our own "heroes" do with us!), but we don't have to settle for compromises in a romance novel. Oh, no! There, the elements that make a true hero combine into one perfect, wonderful, fantastic, (and usually impossible to find in real life) man!

I could write forever on the qualities that make a great historical romance hero, and for each reader, they may vary, but if I were to pick five, they would be:

  1. Courage. A man without courage has no business as the hero in a romance novel. Period. It takes courage to stand up to wrongs, it takes courage to save a heroine trapped on the edge of a high cliff, it takes courage to go into battle, it takes courage to admit a deep, dark secret that might mean the end of a treasured and precious relationship. All four of my de Montforte heroes face these and other challenges throughout the course of the series, and all of them are wildly imbued with courage, but a good example of it is shown by Lord Gareth de Montforte of "THE WILD ONE," the first book in the series. Down and out on his luck, and determined to show the world that he has grown up and can, indeed, be the husband and father his young wife believes he can be, he voluntarily subjects himself to a dangerous situation where he's pitted against a man much his superior in strength, size and experience -- a man who has been paid to kill him. Gareth has the choice to either walk away with his life intact ... or to follow through, even knowing the odds are against him, in order to win a home for his beloved wife and tiny daughter -- and sense of self-respect that has long been denied him. That is courage ... and it's wildly sexy!

  2. Integrity. A person who can't or won't stand up for his own convictions, and/or what he knows is right, is no hero in my book. It takes a certain amount of courage and self-confidence to stay true to one's ideals, and the best romance heroes are those who don't falter or waiver from their beliefs, no matter what the cost. This quality is aptly demonstrated by my hero, Lord Charles de Montforte in "THE BELOVED ONE," whose unreasonably high expectations of himself cause him incredible pain and nearly destroy him. But he never waivers from what he knows to be right, no matter what his own desires or the cost to his own personal happiness, and that is wildly attractive in any hero!

  3. Intelligence. A smart guy is a sexy guy; just look at how many nerd-types are showing up in romance novels these days! What woman in her right mind would want to spend her days with a guy who may be all brawn, but no brains? But in romance novels, we get to have both. One example of a super-intelligent (and very sexy) hero is Lord Andrew de Montforte, the hero of my book "THE DEFIANT ONE." A gifted inventor/scientist who takes refuge from the world in his laboratory after a terrible accident, Lord Andrew creates inventions that are guaranteed to change things: if not the world, then certainly his life, which is just the case when he creates an aphrodisiac that sends him and his heroine, Lady Celsiana Blake, on a hilarious journey of love and laughter. A smart guy is a sexy guy; there's no denying that!

  4. Devotion/Faithfulness to the Heroine. From presidents to sports figures, the news is depressingly full of rich, handsome, extremely powerful men whose downfalls come about because they just can't be faithful to one woman. Do we really need to find these guys in a romance novel? This one doesn't need any explanation! After all, what woman doesn't fantasize about being the sole and abiding craving of one of the richest, most powerful and handsome men in the land? A duke, no less? A man who has eyes for her, and for her alone? Eva de la Mouriere encounters just such a man in Lucien de Montforte, the mighty Duke of Blackheath, in "THE WICKED ONE." Even when tragedy strikes and Eva is told she will never be able to give her husband the heir he so desires, he isn't going anywhere. His love for his duchess is true and abiding and she is as essential to him as air and water; his adoration for her is as fixed as a star in a mariner's sky. To be the enduring fascination of such a powerful and sexy man ... does it get any better than that?

  5. Basic Goodness. Is there anything sexier than a guy who is kind to children, to animals, and to others? A man who goes out of his way, perhaps even at great personal risk to himself, to make life better for someone else? Tortured hero Damon de Wolfe, the sixth Marquess of Morninghall and naval captain who has fallen from grace, begins his hero's journey in "WICKED AT HEART" from a place of despair, apathy, and a burning need for revenge. It takes a very special heroine to awaken him to the basic goodness that is in this man's heart, and to turn that goodness into a force to be reckoned with. Damon will eventually risk his very life in an attempt to make life better for those around him who are suffering indescribable pain -- and that makes him a hero well worth meeting!

There are many "ingredients" that go into the recipe of a great romance hero, and these are just a few of them. I hope you've enjoyed reading my thoughts on this fascinating subject, and as for me, I've greatly enjoyed being here today. Thank you, Jess, and the readers of From Me To You, for hosting me. It has been a pleasure, and an honor, to be here!

"The Wild One" [The de Montforte Brothers Series, Book 1] by Danelle Harmon

My Book Summary : Everyone who knows of his family knows Lord Gareth as The Wild One. He's reckless, the leader of his friends group called 'the Den of Debauchery,' popular with the ladies, and enjoys his carefree lifestyle. That is until Juliet falls into his life and turns his world upside down.

Juliet is from the colonies, the wilderness of Maine to be exact but most recently Boston. She is on her way to meet the Duke of Blackheath (her beloved's, Lord Charles, older brother) to see if he and his family (the de Montforte's) will take her and her daughter, Charlotte, in and help them out. However, on her way to meet the Duke of Blackheath her stagecoach gets robbed. Gareth, not far from robbery, becomes the hero when he attempts to stop the robbers and gets hurt during the process. During the time, that Juliet tries to help Gareth with his wound they find out about each other---that Juliet is Gareth's dead brother's fiancée, Gareth is the Duke & Charles' younger brother, and Charlotte is Gareth's niece. Gareth brings Juliet to the de Montforte home and while he's recuperating they get closer and become friends.

However, finding it hard to get over his "wild" ways, once Gareth is better, he takes out his Den members to have a bit of fun. Yet by the next morning Juliet & Gareth's lives change completely when they find out that the Duke won’t help Juliet out, so Gareth decides to step-up and help them out the only way he can think of how ... to marry Juliet!!

Will this be the best solution for them both?? Will they find that their feelings for each other are more than just friendship? Can Juliet finally settle down The Wild One??

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This fast-paced historical romance will show you what it's like to be the carefree third-son of a Duke who decides to finally become the man he was meant to be, yet has no idea where to begin. It's a very intriguing tale of heartache, new love, friendship, and the lengths one will go to keep those who he loves the most. I really liked the easy relationship/banter between Juliet and Gareth!! They were perfect for each other and setup a wonderful beginning to this series!! Plus, the surprise twist at the end is very shocking that I just not sure, how to take it, so it'll be interesting as to how the second book, "The Beloved One," will develop the series.

I recommend this novel and series to anyone who enjoys historical romances!

- On a side note -
I think I was a little biased with how much I liked Juliet since like her I'm from Maine too. =0)

"You, my dear, do not know how to have fun."
"I do, too!"
"You do not. You are as bad as Lucien. And do you know something? I think it's time someone showed you how to have fun. Namely, me. You can worry all you like about our situation tomorrow, but tonight ... tonight I'm going to make you laugh so hard that you'll forget all about how afraid of me you are."
"I am not afraid of you!"
"You are."
And with that, he pushed his chair back, stalked around the table, and in a single easy movement, swept her right out of her chair and into his arms.
"Gareth! Put me down!"
He only laughed, easily carrying her toward the bed.
"Gareth, I am a grown woman!"
"You are a grown woman who behaves in a manner far too old for her years," he countered, still striding toward the bed. "As the wife of a Den member, that just will not do." ~ within Chapter 18

Book Excerpt :

Prologue

Newman House, 18 April, 1775

My dear brother, Lucien,

It has just gone dark and as I pen these words to you, an air of rising tension hangs above this troubled town. Tonight, several regiments — including mine, the King's Own — have been ordered by General Gage, commander in chief of our forces here in Boston, out to Concord to seize and destroy a significant store of arms and munitions that the rebels have secreted there. Due to the clandestine nature of this assignment, I have ordered my batman, Billingshurst, to withhold the posting of this letter until the morrow, when the mission will have been completed and secrecy will no longer be of concern.

Although it is my most ardent hope that no blood will be shed on either side during this endeavour, I find that my heart, in these final moments before I must leave, is restless and uneasy. It is not for myself that I am afraid, but another. As you know from my previous letters home, I have met a young woman here with whom I have become attached in a warm friendship. I suspect you do not approve of my becoming so enamoured of a storekeeper's daughter, but things are different in this place, and when a fellow is three thousand miles away from home, love makes a far more desirable companion than loneliness. My dear Miss Paige has made me happy, Lucien, and earlier tonight, she accepted my plea for her hand in marriage; I beg you to understand, and forgive, for I know that someday when you meet her, you will love her as I do.

My brother, I have but one thing to ask of you, and knowing that you will see to my wishes is the only thing that calms my troubled soul during these last few moments before we depart. If anything should happen to me — tonight, tomorrow, or at any time whilst I am here in Boston — I beg of you to find it in your heart to show charity and kindness to my angel, my Juliet, for she means the world to me. I know you will take care of her if ever I cannot. Do this for me and I shall be happy, Lucien.

I must close now, as the others are gathered downstairs in the parlour, and we are all ready to move. May God bless and keep you, my dear brother, and Gareth, Andrew, and sweet Nerissa, too.

Charles

Sometime during the last hour, it had begun to grow dark.

Lucien de Montforte turned the letter over in his hands, his gaze shuttered, his mind far away as he stared out the window over the downs that stood like sentinels against the fading twilight. A breath of pink still glowed in the western sky, but it would soon be gone. He hated this time of night, this still and lonely hour just after sunset when old ghosts were near, and distant memories welled up in the heart with the poignant nearness of yesterday, close enough to see yet always too elusive to touch.

But the letter was real. Too real.

He ran a thumb over the heavy vellum, the bold, elegant script that had been so distinctive of Charles's style — both on paper, in thought, and on the field — still looking as fresh as if it had been written yesterday, not last April. His own name was there on the front: To His Grace the Duke of Blackheath, Blackheath Castle, nr. Ravenscombe, Berkshire, England.

They were probably the last words Charles had ever written.

Carefully, he folded the letter along creases that had become fragile and well-worn. The blob of red wax with which his brother had sealed the letter came together at the edges like a wound that had never healed, and try as he might to avoid seeing them, his gaze caught the words that someone, probably Billingshurst, had written on the back....

Found on the desk of Captain Lord Charles Adair de Montforte on the 19th of April 1775, the day on which his lordship was killed in the fighting at Concord. Please deliver to addressee.

A pang went through him. Dead, gone, and all but forgotten, just like that.

The duke of Blackheath carefully laid the letter inside the drawer, which he shut and locked. He gazed once more out the window, lord of all he surveyed but unable to master his own bitter emptiness. A mile away, at the foot of the downs, he could just see the twinkling lights of Ravenscombe village, could envision its ancient church with its Norman tower and tombs of de Montforte dead. And there, inside, high on the stone wall of the chancel, was the simple bronze plaque that was all they had to tell posterity that his brother had ever even lived.

Charles, the second son.

God help them all if anything happened to him, Lucien, and the dukedom passed to the third.

No. God would not be so cruel.

He snuffed the single candle and with the darkness enclosing him, the sky still glowing beyond the window, moved from the room.

Chapter 1

Berkshire, England, 1776

The Flying White was bound for Oxford, and it was running late. Now, trying to make up time lost to a broken axle, the driver had whipped up the team, and the coach careered through the night in a cacophony of shouts, thundering hooves, and cries from the passengers who were clinging for their lives on the roof above.

Strong lanterns cut through the rainy darkness, picking out ditches, trees, and hedgerows as the vehicle hurtled through the Lambourn Downs at a pace that had Juliet Paige's heart in her throat. Because of Charlotte, her six-month-old daughter, Juliet had been lucky enough to get a seat inside the coach, but even so, her head banged against the leather squabs on the right, her shoulder against an elderly gent on her left, and her neck ached with the constant side to side movement. On the seat across from her, another young mother clung to her two frightened children, one huddled under each arm. It had been a dreadful run up from Southampton indeed, and Juliet was feeling almost as ill as she had during the long sea voyage over from Boston.

The coach hit a bump, became airborne for a split second, and landed hard, snapping her neck, throwing her violently against the man on her left, and causing the passengers clinging to the roof above to cry out in terror. Someone's trunk went flying off the coach, but the driver never slowed the galloping team.

"God help us!" murmured the young mother across from Juliet as her children cringed fearfully against her.

Juliet grasped the strap and hung her head, fighting nausea as she hugged her own child. Her lips touched the baby's downy gold curls. "Almost there," she whispered, for Charlotte's ears alone. "Almost there — to your papa's home."

Suddenly without warning, there were shouts, a horse's frightened whinny, and violent curses from the driver. Someone on the roof screamed. The coach careened madly, the inhabitants both inside and out shrieking in terror as the vehicle hurtled along on two wheels for another forty or fifty feet before finally crashing heavily down on its axles with another neck-snapping jolt, shattering a window with the impact and spilling the elderly gent to the floor. Outside, someone was sobbing in fear and pain.

And inside, the atmosphere of the coach went as still as death.

"We're being robbed!" cried the old man, getting to his knees to peer out the rain-spattered window.

Shots rang out. There was a heavy thud from above, then movement just beyond the ominous black pane. And then suddenly, without warning it imploded, showering the inside passengers in a hail of glass.

Gasping, they looked up to see a heavy pistol — and a masked face just beyond it.

"Yer money or yer life. Now!"

~~~~
It was the very devil of a night. No moon, no stars, and a light rain stinging his face as Lord Gareth Francis de Montforte sent his horse, Crusader, flying down the Wantage road at a speed approaching suicide. Stands of beech and oak shot past, there then gone. Pounding hooves splashed through puddles and echoed against the hedgerows that bracketed the road. Gareth glanced over his shoulder, saw nothing but a long empty stretch of road behind him, and shouted with glee. Another race won — Perry, Chilcot, and the rest of the Den of Debauchery would never catch him now!
Laughing, he patted Crusader's neck as the hunter pounded through the night. "Well done, good fellow! Well done —"
And pulled him up sharply at he passed Wether Down.
It took him only a moment to assess the situation.
Highwaymen. And by the looks of it, they were helping themselves to the pickings — and passengers — of the Flying White from Southampton.
The Flying White? The young gentleman reached inside his coat pocket and pulled out his watch, squinting to see its face in the darkness. Damned late for the Flying White...
He dropped the timepiece back into his pocket, steadied Crusader, and considered what to do. No gentlemen of the road, this lot, but a trio of desperate, hardened killers. The driver and guard lay on the ground beside the coach, both presumably dead. Somewhere a child was crying, and now one of the bandits, with a face that made a hatchet look kind, smashed in the windows of the coach with the butt end of his gun. Gareth reached for his pistol. The thought of quietly turning around and going back the way he'd come never occurred to him. The thought of waiting for his friends, probably a mile behind thanks to Crusader's blistering speed, didn't occur to him, either. Especially when he saw one of the bandits yank open the door of the coach and haul out a struggling young woman.
He had just the briefest glimpse of her face — scared, pale, beautiful — before one of the highwaymen shot out the lanterns of the coach and darkness fell over the entire scene. Someone screamed. Another shot rang out, silencing the frightened cry abruptly.
His face grim, the young gentleman knotted his horse's reins and removed his gloves, pulling each one carefully off by the fingertips. With a watchful eye on the highwaymen, he slipped his feet from the irons and vaulted lightly down from the thoroughbred's tall back, his glossy top boots of Spanish leather landing in chalk mud up to his ankles. The horse never moved. He doffed his fine new surtout and laid it over the saddle along with his tricorn and gloves. He tucked the lace at his wrist safely inside his sleeve to protect it from any soot or sparks his pistol might emit. Then he crept through the knee-high weeds and nettles that grew thick at the side of the road, priming and loading the pistol as he moved stealthily toward the stricken coach. He would have time to squeeze off only one shot before they were upon him, and that one shot had to count.
"Violca's Dragon" [The Dragon Ruby Series, Book 1] by Leilani Love
Author's Book Description : Violca knows life can change instantly. Her parents died suddenly, leaving her to raise four younger sisters and keep them safe ~ even from the golden-eyed stranger.
Chase knows the Grey sisters possibly hold the key to his fate. He is determined to to get close, protect them and bring them to his Dragon King. What Violca doesn't know is that once a dragon decides he wants something, there is no stopping him from getting it.
My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars! Five sisters find out there is more to this world then what they knew when others come into their lives to try to protect them from those who would like to use them for evil gain, in the process they learn more about their parents and their pasts then they originally knew.
This unique novel takes the typical paranormal romance situations and throws them into a contemporary setting. Typically, I would like the idea if the romance works out but in this case, it just made me feel bad for Scott (one of the secondary characters who is a panther shifter). One of the things that made it difficult to flow along with the novel was its transitioning between its scenes and between its characters POVs throughout the novel as it wasn't as smooth as I'm used too in other novels. Otherwise, I thought that it has great potential since the plot is engaging and entertaining while making sure the novel never dragged.
As for the main characters, I thought that Violca (V) and Chase were good together once their romance got going. Plus, I enjoyed how close Chase became with her sisters; it was really sweet to read about and it got the reader more involved with the novel too. In truth because of how Chase acts it made me root for them being together even more. I just wish that their mating was more "planned out" in a way that made it not seem so fumbled, but I guess that happens sometimes just like everyday life.
I am definitely interested to see where this series will go, who will end up with who, and if/how the prophecy will come true.
I recommend this novel to those who like paranormal suspenseful romances.
Book Teaser(s) :
“Where’s Eryk?”
Scott looks up at him and by the look on his face, Chase can tell he is upset. “He is taking Kati home.” Taking a big swig of his beer, he shakes his head. “Man, I don’t know what happened, but I think I fucked up?”
Chase frowns. “How the hell could you have fucked up? Did you tell Violca something you shouldn’t have?”
Scott shakes his head. “No, when Kati was here, I almost punched Eryk for touching her.”
Chase starts to smile until he sees Scott’s face and hears him growl, his eyes narrowing on him. “I don’t understand, he’s not the type of kid to take advantage of a girl. Why would you care if he was touching her? What happened?”
Scott stares at his beer, his thumb stroking the top. “I don’t know, she smells like honeysuckle and I...”
His voice trails off and Chase thinks about it for a second before smiling at him. “Did you imprint on our very young witch?”
Scott growls, shaking his head. The idea had obviously never entered his mind. Chase tries not to smile as he sees his friend thinking about what he just said. Suddenly Scott growls, “Shit.” The sudden outburst causes Chase to laugh.
“What the fuck am I supposed to do now? She is too young to claim and if Viktor finds out…”
Chase shakes his head and walks to the kitchen. “I think you need another beer and I am going to join you.” Grabbing two beers from the fridge, he opens them both before walking back into the living room. Handing one to Scott, he smiles. “Think this is karma for you teasing me about getting to close to the older sister?”
Scott takes a drink of his new beer. “Viktor is going to kill us both.” ~ within Chapter 17
About the Author :
Leilani Love is a proud mother of two very active boys. A military wife she loves getting to meet new people wherever they move. She loves to read books crossing many genres. Her love affair with dragons started when she was young and one day dreams of having her own dragon and black panther.
Book Excerpt :
Opening the door, she steps onto the patio and smiles at Eryk. Her eyes are drawn to some movement behind him and she looks up to see Chase walking in from the woods. He is wearing his pants low on his hips and no shirt. Her breath catches as she notices his rippling muscles and the light traces of a six pack on his abs. When her eyes finally roam up to his face, she feels her cheeks heat up. His self-satisfied smile tells her he saw her checking him out.
Eryk clears his throat. “Good morning.”
Violca swears she must be beet red. She smiles at Eryk. “Morning, I just wanted to invite you guys in for eggs and sausage.”
Scott peaks his head out of the tent. “Did you say sausage?”
“Yep, do you want to join us?”
“Hell yeah,” Scott replies, crawling out from the tent.
Violca’s eyes widen. Scott is also in only a pair of jeans, no shirt, and Violca smiles thinking Linda and the girls would be mad to find out that she is the first to see him with his shirt off. She hears a growl and turns to see Chase watching her. “Be careful, I think there is an animal close by,” she says, wondering where that sound came from. “It shouldn’t be too much longer.”
"His Purrfect Mate" [Shifters, Inc. Series, Book 3] by Georgette St. Clair
Author's Book Description : Chloe Novak may be the world’s clumsiest cat shifter; in fact, she’s the only panther she’s ever heard of that doesn’t land on its feet. She may hide her looks behind her glasses, lumpy cardigans, and stacks of books. However, she’s got her beautifully creaky old house and her university job, and she’s content...until billionaire panther shifter Kenneth Chamberlin strides through her office door with an offer she literally can’t refuse, if she ever wants to see her grandmother alive again. The problem is, the Chamberlin family are the ones who ruined her family’s life and reputation – and the sinfully handsome Kenneth makes her tingle in all the right places. How can she work with him in close quarters and keep her heart and her sanity intact?
My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, one clumsy cat shifter falls right into one fifty-year-old mystery that hits closer to home then she would have expected while loosing her heart to her biggest enemy in the process....
This was the first time I've read a novel from this author and series, however even though it was written as a stand-alone novel so I could understand everything that was going on, I just wished that I liked it better. The plot was good and there were some really cute/funny parts to it. Yet, I would have enjoyed this novel more if the main characters, Chloe and Kenneth, were the major focus instead of the secondary characters. I mean I understand it's a series and that means you read more about previous main characters in the series but there wasn't enough scenes between Chloe and Kenneth to make you really like them as characters, even though it was obvious that they made a good match up. If I read any more from this series I hope those novels will have the plot be more involved with it's main characters instead of the other way around. With that being said though, I did like the secondary characters a lot ... it'll be interesting to see where this series will go next.
I recommend this novel to those who are fans of Ms. St. Clair and this series!
“Looking for someone?” Kenneth said from right behind her, making her jump and spill half her drink down the front of her dress. He was wearing a shiny black tuxedo with a perfectly knotted blue silk bowtie, and clinging to his arm was a slender platinum blonde with huge blue eyes. She had a tiny button nose and a mouth shaped like a glossy pink heart. She wore a dress that looked as if it were made of black liquid silk, fitting her as if it had been poured over her slim body, rippling and flowing like a river.
Looking at her clinging to Kenneth gave Chloe an odd, sickly feeling in her stomach which she had never experienced before.
Chloe glanced down at her dress. It was loose in the bust, and tight in the hips , and now there was a stain on the front that was shaped like a chicken, and she was regretting her decision to carry her sweater slung over her arm. She should have handed it in at the coat check.
High society and Chloe didn’t mix.
“I’m looking for my boyfriend,” she said desperately. “We’re practically engaged, actually.” Where the hell was Henry?
“Is that a sweater?” the blonde asked her incredulously, eyes widening.
“What does your boyfriend look like?” Kenneth asked politely, but she could sense the skepticism in his smile. “Let me help you find him.”
“He’s got bleached blond hair, he’s wearing a plaid jacket...”
“That man over there?” He inclined his head at Henry, who was standing in a corner making out with the waiter. The waiter was still holding the tray in his left hand, and people were walking by, grabbing canapés off of it.
Tarts. Riiight. He’d gone to seek out tarts. She mentally added a new item to her to-do list for tomorrow: stab Henry through the heart with a fountain pen.
“No, no...ah...another blond guy in a plaid jacket.” Right. Because the room was crawling with them. ~ within Chapter 3
“I swear, it is unbelievable how many outfits I go through,” Bobbi said, fishing through a bag of spare clothing she’d bought with her.
“It must get expensive,” Pixie observed, as Mayameen weaved around potholes and chunks of asphalt.
“If I were an entrepreneur, I’d design a line of clothing for shifters,” she said. “Clothing that wouldn’t shred to pieces every damned time I shift. I’m tired of flashing my boobs all over town.”
“That could work. Shifters are what, ten percent of the overall population in the U.S.? Forty percent in some areas? You’d have a big customer base. Me, I’m sticking with my amusement park idea. It’ll make millions.”
“No, it won’t, because half of the amusement park patrons will be dead. Live ammunition? Seriously.”
“Dreamkiller,” Pixie muttered. “The cars would all be bulletproof.”
They arrived at the El-Debar’s ten minutes later, still arguing over Pixie’s amusement park idea. ~ within Chapter 8
Feasted On: Fang Chronicles Series, Book 6
- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 207; Kindle Edition - File Size: 3476 KB | Expected Release Date: September 30, 2014 | Publisher: Bad Luck Publishing / Self-Published | Obtained: NetGalley
"Ivan" [Fang Chronicles Series, Book 6] by D’Elen McClain (aka Holly S. Roberts & Suzie Ivy)
Author's Book Description : The loss of Ivan’s mate, Alba, left him broken and turned his inner beast inside out. With the war between the wolves and enemy cats, who killed his mate, all but over his anger has no focus. His new clan consists of two vampires, three cats, and his lone wolf.
Talya ran from her clan after losing a challenge against her friend for the love of Dmitri, the vampire leader of the bear clan. She’s young and impulsive with the weight of her shameful past on her shoulders. Can two humans help her mature into the alpha female she’s destined to be? Or will she endanger them both to the point of no return?
Ivan needs a mate worthy of taking on his angry beast and Talya needs a mate strong enough to tame her erratic impulses. Can sworn enemies overcome their pasts and fight for a chance at eternal love?
My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Two lost souls find themselves mated to each other...
Wow! Not what I expected, with its humor, moving plot lines, and feisty characters I could not get enough of this novel. Ivan and Talya are both struggling to get over the past heartaches and mistakes before they meet each other. Once they are together everything comes to a head and they are forced to decide if they're willing to fight fate or not for each other. I enjoyed reading about their pairing mostly because even though they originally have issues with one another they force themselves to make it work out---better for them and their pack. It was hard to deny that they were perfect for each other but it was fun watching them try!
If-and-when Rondy gets his own novel I'll be interested to see how he does.
In truth, the only thing that I wish was a bit smoother/more romantic was the ending. I say that even though I enjoyed how everything was wrapped up.
I recommend this novel to those who are fans of this series and/or if you like paranormal romances!
