"Three Ways to Wicked" [Wicked Shores Series, Book 1] by Jodi Redford

Author's Book Description : Three ingredients for a hot summer: sun, sand, and sizzling sex.

Following a nasty breakup with her ex, Kayla English is eager to get her erotic writing mojo back on track. Except progress on her current book has flatlined, right along with her belief in happily-ever-after.

Solution? Two weeks of solitude in the Florida sun thanks to some friends' generous offer to house-sit their place on the beach. She didn't count on having roommates--or on getting the sexiest peepshow of her life.

Seven years after an intimate encounter rocked their worlds, business partners Tyler Bishop and Gibb Masters have kept things strictly in the friend zone. A recent storm has left them homeless, though. They figure moving into Ty’s parents’ place is preferable to roughing it elsewhere, even if it means resisting the temptation to slip between the sheets with Kayla…and each other.

As the days heat up, so does their three-way attraction. But when emotions run deeper than any of them expect, three wary hearts must decide if it’s worth the risk to write their own HEA.

Warning: This book brings the dirty. We're talking dirty sex in an outdoor shower, on a boat, and on the kitchen counter with a dirty-mouthed Casanova. In other words, all the good stuff with a side of glow-in-the-dark body paint.

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, this sweet erotic romance is about three long-time friends coming to terms with their feelings for one another, and when they do, it'll change all their lives for the better! Together the dreams they've always craved will come true!

Tyler (Ty), Kayla (Kay), & Gibb are good friends but even better lovers. They allow each other the opportunity to be who they are supposed to be, while getting over past hurts in their lives. Kay gets the best of both worlds with Ty being the "dirty-mouthed Casanova" and Gibb being the protective/sweet-type. Together the three of them fall in love while providing a lot of interesting sexual exploits for you to enjoy!

My only wish is that the plot flowed a bit better, as it seemed to go a little to slow in some parts while a bit to fast in others. Nevertheless, I loved the characters and can't wait to see where this series will take us!

I recommend this novella to anyone who enjoys erotic three-way romances!

Book Teaser(s) :
They pulled into the driveway directly behind Kayla. Not a moment too soon, considering Gibb was sporting the bluest balls known to mankind. He killed the Bronco’s engine and pocketed the keys before hopping outside. Looking to hide his anxiousness, he deliberately kept his posture loose and casual as he approached Kay. From the corner of his eye, he noticed Ty reveling in a knowing smirk. Asshole was thoroughly enjoying testing Gibb’s threshold for sexual torment.
Kay clicked her car door shut and turned toward them with a readied smile. Something in Gibb’s expression must have ratted out his state of mind because her eyes widened several fractions. So much for his bullshit attempt at pretending he wasn’t frothing at the mouth to get intimately acquainted with her pussy again. Her lips parted, but before any words could slip free, the solitary thread comprising his frayed control unraveled, and he nudged her against the Camry’s doorframe. ~ within Chapter 10
She couldn’t imagine not waking up every day in their arms, just content in knowing her world was a wonderful place because they resided within it.
But that’s precisely what she had to look forward to after this week. Endless days without Ty and Gibb.
Throat tight with emotion, she settled her purse on the floor and went to inspect the paints. Dropping onto her haunches, she unscrewed the cap of the closest jar and eyed its bright blue contents. “Ooh, I get to make you guys into Smurfs!”
Ty groaned. “You didn’t just say that.”
“Okay, how about that dude from Avatar?”
“Better.”
Before she could tease Ty any further, Gibb shut off the lights, sealing them in an expansive dark wonderland backdropped by a glowing neon rainforest. Her delighted gasp sneaking loose, she lifted to her feet and gaped at the intricate pattern of foliage decorating the opposite wall. The effect was so realistic she swore the fern fronds would rustle beneath her fingertips. ~ within Chapter 14

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 1147 KB | Expected Release Date: October 8, 2013 | Publisher: St. Martin's Press | Obtained: NetGalley

"The Scandal Before Christmas" [The Reckless Brides Series, Book 3.5] by Elizabeth Essex

Author's Book Description : Lieutenant Ian Worth needs a wife by Christmas, and he can’t afford to be choosy. He has to find her, woo her, and wed her before he goes back to sea—all within a matter of days. Anne Lesley is a shy spinster with no prospects, and nothing and no one to recommend her but her own self. She accepts the lieutenant’s hasty offer only for the comfort and security it will bring. But when a midwinter storm snows her and Ian in, they both find they got much more than they bargained for—laughter, light, and a Christmas filled with honest to goodness true love...

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, this is a sweet historical romance that keeps entertained while allowing you to enjoy catching up with favorite past characters.

Ian and Anne's story is charming in the way that they become friends, to confidants, to lovers. Plus it helped that they have similar interests.

All in all, I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the series and to those who enjoy historical (slightly erotic) romances!

"Well, you have your marching orders, Miss Lesley," he said for her ears alone as he ushered her out the door of the dining room. "You are hereby required to contribute more than two words as you inspect the premises. Or perhaps you might defer them until some later time. Perhaps in the morning, on another walk, when we march resolutely toward the village of St. Helens."
His teasing had goaded her into looking at him then, giving him a glimpse of heat firing in the depths of her eye. "As you wish, lieutenant."
The words were quiet, but hot.
"Four already. But I shan't let you off that lightly. And you did promise not to call me lieutenant."
"I never did."
She was so resolutely battened down, he could feel his own sail shaking loose to run before the wind. "Ian," he insisted, just as determined as she. But he was determined to find out what made the quiet, serious Miss Lesley tick. So far, her pleasure was limited to walking.
"Sir---"
"Ian. Give it a try." He gave her his best, most winning smile---the one that made barmaids forget to charge him for his beer, and offer up other delights instead.
And it was working. She was having trouble keeping her determined look in order---she had to keep pursing her lips. "I---"
"Almost. Almost. But you didn't say 'sir,' so I shan't object any more this evening. This way." ~ within Chapter 5

Made the Grade: Ashes by Sarah Gilman

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 200 KB | Expected Release Date: December 30, 2013 | Publisher: Entangled Publishing : Covet | Obtained: NetGalley

"Ashes" by Sarah Gilman

Author's Book Description : Accidents happen for a reason...

Journalist Ambrosia Pellerin accepts an assignment involving the legendary phoenix, expecting, if nothing else, a little entertainment. Instead, she winds up pregnant—by a surprisingly human-looking firebird, Reece Bennu.

As the Phoenix prince, Reece is next in line to the throne and expected to marry a purebred royal. A common human such as Ambrosia is not in the cards. He swears, though, he’ll never be an absentee father.

As Ambrosia’s due date grows closer, so do the soon-to-be parents. But will their tentative love survive the prejudice of Reece’s grandmother, who will stop at nothing to tear the two apart?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, two people unite in an unexpected and unpredictable way, and then they try to navigate around the multitude of complications that arise from the fallout...

At first, I wasn't sure about the way Ambrosia and Reece's lives get together, as it is out of the ordinary in ways that make you second-guess what you're reading in the novel. In addition, you will probably only enjoy this novel if you just go with the flow and have an open mind, as I did. Nevertheless, it was fun falling into Ms. Gilman's "firebird world" and maneuvering through the nuances of it all.

I did like Ambrosia and Reece as a couple. Yet, I wasn't completely happy with the way that the plot flowed. I mean this novel went from one worry (an obsessed person trying to find out more about firebirds) straight to another (Ambrosia getting involved into Reece's world and all that implies) without, really, any resolutions for the first worry, I mean what happened with that guy.

Overall though, I did enjoy how this novel wraps up, it was very sweet.

I recommend this novel to anyone who has an open mind and enjoys paranormal romances!

Book Teaser(s) :
A large gathering of civilians knelt nearby—not their typical behavior at the sacred sight. Usually, they prayed alone or in small groups at the Tree’s roots and offered gifts, such as herbs and flowers and hair clippings and wine, and left. What on earth was going on?
Ambrosia, Celeste, and William stood closer to the Tree, beneath a low branch covered in pale green, fresh leaves and white flowers.
He froze and gooseflesh covered his arms.
Join us, a ghostly voice, the perfect blend of masculine and feminine, whispered into Reece’s mind. The Tree.
He shook his head and murmured, “Why have you done this?”
Why not? The Tree sounded hurt.
“I’ve just met this woman, for one thing.”
And you’ve done nothing but think about her since the moment you first saw her—not just the pregnancy, but her hair and the little mole on her earlobe and the feisty way she never backs down—
“Make your point.”
You know what your problem is? You don’t care that she’s human, but all you think about is that you can’t have her, that you need to hold out for a phoeness. Now, even a pureblooded phoeness will kneel before Ambrosia. You should be thanking me. Ingrate.
“Almighty weed.” Reece sighed. “Infatuation doesn’t necessarily grow to become more.”
You’ve been infatuated a hundred times. This is vastly different.
“Of course it is. She’s carrying my child.”
It’s more than that. You’ll see in time.
Reece crossed the clearing and wrapped an arm around Ambrosia. After a nod to William and Celeste, they backed off and disappeared down the path toward the house. The kneeling citizens got to their feet and also retreated, leaving Reece and Ambrosia alone. Well, as alone as it got beneath the limbs of a Tree that fancied itself a matchmaker. ~ within Chapter 14

Feasted On: Shaken Dirty Series, Book 1

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 1186 KB | Expected Release Date: October 14, 2013 | Publisher: Entangled Publishing : Brazen | Obtained: NetGalley

"Crash into Me" [Shaken Dirty Series, Book 1] by Tracy Wolff (aka Tracy Deebs, Tessa Adams, & Ivy Adams)

Author's Book Description : Jamison Matthews has lusted after Ryder Montgomery since she was a preteen. But now that Ryder and her brother's band, Shaken Dirty, has made it huge, she's just one of many pining for the brooding lead singer. Too bad Ryder still sees her as a little sister. Not that it matters. Her brother would never allow it, and the last thing Jamison wants is to be another notch on a rock star's bed post. Even if it's Ryder's.

Ryder doesn't deserve happiness. After his fame destroyed his last girlfriend, he swore he'd never fall in love again. So when Jamison, the girl he's been in danger of loving for years, joins the band on the road, he'll do anything to deny the sparks between them--even after one hot night together. But Jamison is determined to show Ryder that he's worthy of love--her love--and that she's all grown up and ready to play.

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Attraction brews between two long-time friends while they deal with staying within close proximity to each other and try to stay apart, which--of course--doesn't work out but makes for one HOT read!

Jamison & Ryder are a combustible duo in regards to their ever-growing relationship. They couldn't get enough of each other, no matter what they said, and it makes for a steamy novel which you wish wouldn't end!

I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of this novel and the great build-up that ensues for this series! Ryder's band mates are an eclectic mix of characters that, by the end of the book, it'll keep you wondering as to what is going to happen next for them. Yet, even as I say that, I'll admit that I'm in a love/hate relationship with the novel's epilogue because even though it gives you a good insight as to where this series is going and what will happen, it also leaves you with too many unanswered questions. On the plus side, though for series' reader lovers, it means that fans of this novel should definitely be planning on sticking around for the "long haul" when it comes to wanting to read each book in this series!

Therefore, on that note, I'll just say that I DO recommend this novel and series to anyone who enjoys HOT rock star romances!!

Book Teaser(s) :
"You're really not going to do anything?" he again demanded of Jared, who seemed more interested in his drink than he was in keeping Jamison safe.
"And get my ass handed to me?" Jared asked with a smirk. "You know how she gets if I interfere too much. Besides, Wyatt and Quinn are out there. They've got her back."
Ryder turned around, scanned the crowd near where Jamison was dancing. Sure enough, his drummer and keyboardist had ditched the women they'd been hanging with and had started dancing with Jamison instead. It should have made him feel better--did make him feel better. At least until the music changed to a slow song, and she threw her arms around Quinn's neck and whispered in his ear.
Quinn laughed at whatever she told him, then settled his hands on her waist and pulled her close. Too close, in Ryder's opinion, but a glance at Jared--who was totally relaxed as he nursed a beer--told him he might be overreacting a little. The knowledge did nothing to cool his blood, or the sudden urge he had to break his bandmate's fingers. Who cared if they were at the beginning of a worldwide tour? The guy didn't actually need his fingers to play the keyboard, did he? ~ within Chapter 3

"It Happened Under the Mistletoe" [The Secret Brides Series, Book 3.5] by Valerie Bowman

Author's Book Description : When Oliver Townsende escapes to his friend’s house for a Christmas party, he intends to avoid the hordes of marriage-minded misses who have been dogging his steps in London ever since he inherited a dukedom. He soon learns a bit of Yuletide peace and quiet is too much to ask for. When he encounters Miss Cerian Blake, who’s dodging her own unwanted set of admirers, the two decide to join forces and fake an infatuation to keep their suitors at bay. But when a bough of mistletoe becomes involved, will their Christmastime prank turn into a love to last all seasons?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! Two people are looking for the same thing in finding a spouse ... a love match but, because of their inheritances, it's hard to find that certain person who is being true ... that is until they meet each other.

Oliver and Cerian's blossoming romance is one that I thoroughly enjoyed reading about. From their growing friendship to their personal worries/feelings for each other, this novella is one that I didn't want to finish, as I liked the main characters so much. In addition, that mysterious cat was fun to find out about, especially when it kept showing up at the most opportune times and suddenly wearing random decorations.

Overall, I recommend this novella to anyone who likes historical romances!

"Your cat."
"I don't own a cat."
"Whose cat is she then?"
Kate shook her head. "To my knowledge there is no cat in this house. Perhaps one of the guests brought him."
"Not a him. She's a female and she's fluffy and gray and has pretty green eyes. She's exceedingly friendly and seems to like people a great deal. Acts something like a dog, this cat. I found her in the silver closet."

"The Surprise Holiday Dad" [Safe Harbor Medical Series, Book 12] by Jacqueline Diamond (aka Jackie Hyman, Jackie Diamond Hyman, Jacqueline Topaz, & Jacqueline Jade)

Author's Book Description : After her sister’s death, obstetrician Adrienne Cavill expects to adopt her beloved nephew. But the little boy’s dad, a private detective, isn’t the deadbeat she believed. He returns to claim his son...and her heart. Order for Kindle or Nook.

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, this novel brings together a broken family, heals their old wounds, and creates new memories for them. Adrienne & Wade are a wonderful match up, they just even each other out! I liked how this novel plays itself out. Yet even though I thought the ending was sweet I think it could have been planned out better, and I wish Adrienne could have handled her situation with Wade towards the end of the novel better then how it played out.

Overall, I really liked this novel with its main & secondary characters, which made me very interested in this series! I recommend it to those who like contemporary romances!

From the trunk, Wade lifted a guitar case. "Do you know what this is?" His voice carried across the lawn.
The boy studied it warily. "It's a machine gun."
"What?"
As the man swung toward Adrienne in confusion, she started to laugh. "Too many gangster shows on TV," she said as they neared her.
"Aha." Wade regarded his son in amusement. "Reg, it's a guitar."
"Like in rock band?"
"Yes, except rock bands use electric guitars. This one is acoustic. It has a softer sound."
In the den Reggie perched on the sofa beside his father. Despite the difference in hair color---Wade's was medium brown, Reggie's blond---the rounded shapes of their heads showed a strong resemblance.
The little boy watched in fascination as Wade took out a small electronic device and began tightening the strings. ~ within Chapter 5

"A Marriage in Middlebury" by Anita Higman

Author's Book Description : What happens when the matchmaker finds a match for herself? Charlotte Rose Hill has been serving up country delicacies, uniquely blended teas, and matchmaking advice for her quirky but beloved customers for more than 10 years. But for her, marriage seems like an elusive butterfly, always out of reach. At 18, Charlotte fell in love with a young man, Sam Wilder, but his family convinced her to walk away from their relationship. She did, and then became engaged to another man, who later died before they were married. Now, more than a decade later, Charlotte finds that she still has feelings for her first love. Initially thrilled to learn that Sam has come home to Middlebury, Texas, Charlotte is devastated to learn that he’s brought someone with him: his fiancée. But all is not lost when the townsfolk decide to get involved. Will Charlotte and Sam find their way back to each other?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars --- old flames find each other again, new flames meeting and trying to make everyone else as happy as they are, with unexpected twists and turns thrown in...

Charlotte and Sam are meant for each other no matter how long time has kept them apart. Reading about their pasts and the secrets that Sam's malicious father had, I am very happy with how this novel brings these two kindred spirits together. Nevertheless, I was surprised by how Ms. Higman created the plots in a way that made me still want to root for Sam's current fiancée, Audrey, more so then I ever would have thought especially after all the subtle antics she got into.

Yet, I believe what truly made me like this novel was the town; it's people, and the camaraderie that surrounds Charlotte between her tearoom and her friends. They were all dynamic in their own ways, even the smallest of characters, that I could probably have enjoyed just reading about their constant banter.

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes Christian romances and/or are fans of Ms. Higman.

"Thank you for making me feel better." Audrey reached out to Charlotte's hand. "We would like you to join us for Easter dinner too. Wouldn't we, Sam?"
"Yes, of course," Sam said.
If Sam had some uncomfortable twinges about her being at the dinner, he hid them well. She grinned back at him, but she really felt like cringing all the way to her toes.
"Sam lost track of his old friends from high school," Audrey said, "and I don't have any friends except for you and Nelly, so I've invited some of the people we're getting to know from the tearoom. And we'll be inviting Obie and Roberta too. So, what do you think? Will you come?"
Charlotte still felt a "no" on the tip of her tongue, but if Sam and Audrey were going to make their home in Middlebury, she would have to learn to cope with seeing them together. No better time than the present to start dealing with what was obviously meant to be. "Yes, of course. Would you like me to bring something?"
"No, not at all," Audrey said. "I'm sure you'd appreciate a rest from cooking for the day. Nelly will have it all under control."
"Nelly is a terrific cook," Charlotte said. "You're lucky to have her."
Audrey scooted her chair out and started collecting the tea dishes.
"Thank you for inviting me." Charlotte hoped her smile came off as sincere. Then she remembered the promise she'd made to herself to work a little harder at dating and thought of a really nice guy she knew in Houston---one she'd dated on and off again through the years. "I have one question about the dinner. Would you mind if I brought a date?"
The grasp Sam had on his teacup must have loosened, because the fine porcelain cup fell from his fingers to the floor and smashed into a hundred heartbreaking pieces. ~ within Chapter 18

"One Tiny Miracle..." by Carol Marinelli

Author's Book Description : Dr. Ben Richardson is trying to make yet another new start, this time in the emergency department at a Melbourne hospital. It's been nearly four years since he lost his wife and unborn child—and he still hasn't let go. So it comes as quite a surprise to him when his eye is drawn to a beautiful pregnant woman on the beach.

When Ben realizes Celeste is a nurse at the hospital, he wants to keep his distance. She reminds him too much of all he's lost. But Celeste is clearly facing this challenging pregnancy alone, and Ben can't help coming to her rescue. Being with her to deliver her premature baby girl finally makes him realize there's a future for him right here after all—if he's prepared to risk enough to claim it....

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This sweet world-win romance was one that enchants you with its depth and keeps you captivated with its charm. I enjoyed reading about Ben & Celeste's past struggles and how they slowly turn over a "new leaf" with each other. Their relationship is dynamic, surprising (in some ways), and charming in it's simplicity.

I especially enjoyed the epilogue!

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes fast-paced contemporary romances, especially ones based around babies & handsome doctors.

Book Teaser(s) :
THEY IGNORED EACH other at work, of course.
Well, they didn’t mention their evenings by the television or walks on the beach and sometimes as she sat in the staffroom and listened as Deb rattled on about how sure she was that Ben was going to ask her out (when Ben had already told her that he was embarrassed by Deb’s constant flirting), or when the gorgeous Belinda started talking rather too warmly about him, though Celeste sat like a contended Buddha, inside she was fuming and could have cheerfully strangled them quiet.
She liked him.
Which was okay and everything. After all, half the department liked him in that way too, she was hardly in a minority— no, there was a slightly bigger problem than that.
Sometimes, sometimes she got that nervous fluttering feeling, which could only be generated by two.
Sometimes, sometimes she got this fleeting glimpse that Ben liked her too.
She told herself she was imagining it— as surely as Deb was. Because there was no way Ben could possibly be interested in her.
So why was he acting so strangely? ~ within Chapter 4
The whole place was to die for—every room in the house, even the master bathroom, was angled for water views!
‘There are no blinds,’ Celeste pointed out, and Ben smothered a smile, because when he’d first looked around the home, he’d said exactly the same thing, only the agent hadn’t ignored him! ‘How can you have floor-to-ceiling windows in a bathroom and no blinds?’ Celeste demanded.
‘The glass is treated,’ the agent hissed. ‘You can see out , but no one can see in.
‘Now, moving along, this is the master bedroom!’
‘Divine!’ Celeste breathed as she stepped in. A vast bed was in the centre, and there was a balcony set up with a little table and chairs...
‘Are the windows treated in here too?’ Celeste asked pointedly as the agent sucked in his breath.
She did make him smile.
And he did miss her.
She was writing on her little list again—just as if she was a serious bidder—and he could see the real-estate agent’s lips purse as she stepped out boldly onto the balcony instead of following the pack back along the hall. ‘Can you keep up, please?’ the agent snapped, and Ben felt his teeth grind together.
‘This room would make an ideal nursery...’ Despite her obvious condition the agent addressed a loving young couple and ignored Celeste when she asked a question. How she wished she’d won the lottery, and could pull out the winning bid just to wipe that superior smile off his smug face and make him squirm. Ben saw her face redden as the agent ignored her and then caught her eye and gave her a wink.
‘My partner asked a question,’ Ben said coolly, watching Celeste’s beam of delight as the agent practically gave himself whiplash, turning to face her. No, she hadn’t won loads of money, but watching that smug smile leave his face was almost as good. ~ within Chapter 6

Guest Post :: Self-Publishing – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly by Jenna Bennett | Small Business Saturday

In honor of Small Business Saturday (today--November 30th) I'm hosting guest posts from authors who were interested in helping out! So, here is a post by Jenna Bennett, author of "Tall, Dark, and Divine" & "Fortune's Hero," about what it's like to be a self-published author!!

Self-Publishing – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Once upon a time, in the dark ages of 2006, when I’d just written THE END on the last page of my first completed manuscript and had to decide what to do with it, there was really only one option open to me: Query, find an agent, and if you’re lucky, sell it to a publisher.

If you’re unlucky, write another and repeat the process.

At that point, self-publishing was for the people who hadn’t been able to snag the attention of an agent and/or an editor.

If you were good enough, the wisdom went, you’d get a traditional publishing contract. If you weren’t... well, only people who weren’t good enough, self-published.

By 2011, when I got the rights to that first book back, the publishing landscape had changed. Self-publishing was no longer only for the rejected, the down at heel. It was the ‘in’ thing. Everyone was doing it, and people were getting filthy rich, which made more people want to do it. Suddenly, self-pub had gone from being the anti-Christ to the second coming.

So I gave it a try. I had a book that had been published, where the publisher had returned the rights to me after declining to publish the rest of the series. I had three books written and edited, one book written but not edited, and another halfway done. Over the course of six or eight months that year, I published all of them.

And sat back and waited for the money to start rolling in.

And waited.

And waited some more.

Believe it or not, the money didn’t roll in. It trickled, though. Slowly. Three years later, I still haven’t sold a million copies of my books, although I’ve published more of them since. And I’m making a living, which is a big deal to many writers.

Turns out, self-publishing is just another way to get content to readers. It’s neither the anti-Christ nor the second coming. It isn’t a miracle cure or a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s just another aspect of the publishing game. And the things that work in traditional publishing, tend to work in self-publishing as well, now that things have settled down into a more steady groove.

The more books you have available, the more money you’ll make.

Put out a professional product, and people will buy it.

Cream does rise to the top.

I’m a hybrid author these days. I do some traditional publishing and some self-publishing. There’s more self-pub, but only because it’s faster to get the books out when I can do it myself. There’s no one else’s production time to take into account. When you publish with a publishing house, there’s the editor’s time, and the copy-editor’s time, and the proof-reader’s time, and the cover designer’s time, and the sales team’s time to consider in addition to your own. When you’re all of those, you’re doing all the work, but you control the timing. So for every trad book I put out, I manage two, maybe even three, self-published books.

Not because they’re of inferior quality, though. Coming from a traditional publishing background is a real bonus in the self-publishing game. When you’ve been through the process a few times, and you see just how much goes into a publisher’s putting out a professional and polished product, and how many eyes are on that manuscript before it’s deemed polished enough, you realize just how much work you have to do to put out a comparable product on your own.

And that’s what you have to do. Because if self-publishing is just another way to get content to readers, then your self-published book is going to have to compete in the same marketplace as the traditionally published books from Random Penguin, and Simon & Schuster, and HarperCollins, and Harlequin. And while you may feel that the traditionally published books out there are not up to the snuff they ought to be, they’re usually professionally edited, copy-edited, proof-read and packaged. However you may feel about the writing or the story, the product – with a very few exceptions – is a professional one.

So while signing with a publisher will get you an editor who works with you on story structure and characterization and sometimes grammar, and a copy-editor who checks all your facts and figures and makes sure you’re not messing up your history, and a proof-reader who makes sure (after you do) that you haven’t left any errors, and a cover artist, and a cover designer, and an interior designer and formatter, all of whom make sure your book looks as lovely as it can possibly look, not to mention a sales and/or marketing department whose job it is to get your book into the public eye, where it can be seen and bought – because nobody can buy it if they don’t know it’s there... when you’re self-publishing, you have to do all those things yourself, or hire someone to do them for you.

It isn’t for the faint of heart.

If you don’t get off on the control, it’s probably not for you.

If your heart doesn’t beat a little faster at the thought of being the master of your own fate, you’re probably better off with a publisher.

And if you just want to write, and you don’t want to deal with the cover design, or the marketing, or the whole career-building bit, do yourself a favor and go the traditional route.

You’ll be happier, trust me.

It isn’t for everyone.

And that’s fine. Not being a self-publisher doesn’t make you a failure, any more than not being able to sell a book to traditional publishing ten years ago made you a failure. It made you not a good fit. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Because if self-pub is just another way of getting product to market, it’s not better or worse than any other way of getting product to market.

It’s neither the anti-Christ nor the second coming. It’s a direction you can choose to take your career, if you think it’s something you’ll enjoy. Or it’s a direction you can choose to ignore, if you think you won’t. Trad publishing isn’t going anywhere, in spite of what the first wave of self-publishers claimed five years ago. 70% of all books sold in the U.S. every year are still print books, and getting print books into stores is something you still can’t do on your own. Whether seeing your book on the self at Barnes & Noble or your local indie bookstore is important to you, is something only you can answer for yourself.

There’s good and bad in every aspect of publishing. There’s even a little bit of ugly once in a while. And we all have to choose for ourselves what our priorities are, and where we fit in the scheme of things.

It’s a great time to be a writer. The opportunities are practically endless. And that’s a very good thing!
