Welcome to Small Business Saturday/Week

This is the 2nd year that I've done participated/held Small Business Saturday/Week and I'm hoping it'll be even more of a success. Yet this year it'll be a bit different because I've recently moved and to tell you the truth I haven't found any non-commercial/local stores that I have fallen in love with yet. Therefore, as today is Small Business Saturday I thought another way for me to support "small businesses" in a sense would be to support some INDIE AUTHORS and host some giveaways for YOU!

The giveaway items this year all vary ....
  • Indie Authors/Publishers Donated Items --- from great novels/novellas to greeting cards
  • Recommended Books --- these are books by Indie Authors that I have read this year and gave 5 out of 5 stars too

I hope everyone will be nice enough to support your local businesses today, this weekend and throughout the holiday season!!

Also -- I'd like to give a BIG THANK YOU to all of the authors who were willing to donate a book or item for a giveaway. Plus, a SPECIAL THANKS to Jenna Bennett, Kristine Cayne & Dana Delamar for wanting to do some guest posts for this event!!

I hope everyone will have a wonderful SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY!! And be sure to sign up for the GREAT Giveaways today and throughout this week!!

Best regards, Jess

Guest Post :: Self-Publishing – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly by Jenna Bennett | Small Business Saturday

In honor of Small Business Saturday (today--November 30th) I'm hosting guest posts from authors who were interested in helping out! So, here is a post by Jenna Bennett, author of "Tall, Dark, and Divine" & "Fortune's Hero," about what it's like to be a self-published author!!

Self-Publishing – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Once upon a time, in the dark ages of 2006, when I’d just written THE END on the last page of my first completed manuscript and had to decide what to do with it, there was really only one option open to me: Query, find an agent, and if you’re lucky, sell it to a publisher.

If you’re unlucky, write another and repeat the process.

At that point, self-publishing was for the people who hadn’t been able to snag the attention of an agent and/or an editor.

If you were good enough, the wisdom went, you’d get a traditional publishing contract. If you weren’t... well, only people who weren’t good enough, self-published.

By 2011, when I got the rights to that first book back, the publishing landscape had changed. Self-publishing was no longer only for the rejected, the down at heel. It was the ‘in’ thing. Everyone was doing it, and people were getting filthy rich, which made more people want to do it. Suddenly, self-pub had gone from being the anti-Christ to the second coming.

So I gave it a try. I had a book that had been published, where the publisher had returned the rights to me after declining to publish the rest of the series. I had three books written and edited, one book written but not edited, and another halfway done. Over the course of six or eight months that year, I published all of them.

And sat back and waited for the money to start rolling in.

And waited.

And waited some more.

Believe it or not, the money didn’t roll in. It trickled, though. Slowly. Three years later, I still haven’t sold a million copies of my books, although I’ve published more of them since. And I’m making a living, which is a big deal to many writers.

Turns out, self-publishing is just another way to get content to readers. It’s neither the anti-Christ nor the second coming. It isn’t a miracle cure or a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s just another aspect of the publishing game. And the things that work in traditional publishing, tend to work in self-publishing as well, now that things have settled down into a more steady groove.

The more books you have available, the more money you’ll make.

Put out a professional product, and people will buy it.

Cream does rise to the top.

I’m a hybrid author these days. I do some traditional publishing and some self-publishing. There’s more self-pub, but only because it’s faster to get the books out when I can do it myself. There’s no one else’s production time to take into account. When you publish with a publishing house, there’s the editor’s time, and the copy-editor’s time, and the proof-reader’s time, and the cover designer’s time, and the sales team’s time to consider in addition to your own. When you’re all of those, you’re doing all the work, but you control the timing. So for every trad book I put out, I manage two, maybe even three, self-published books.

Not because they’re of inferior quality, though. Coming from a traditional publishing background is a real bonus in the self-publishing game. When you’ve been through the process a few times, and you see just how much goes into a publisher’s putting out a professional and polished product, and how many eyes are on that manuscript before it’s deemed polished enough, you realize just how much work you have to do to put out a comparable product on your own.

And that’s what you have to do. Because if self-publishing is just another way to get content to readers, then your self-published book is going to have to compete in the same marketplace as the traditionally published books from Random Penguin, and Simon & Schuster, and HarperCollins, and Harlequin. And while you may feel that the traditionally published books out there are not up to the snuff they ought to be, they’re usually professionally edited, copy-edited, proof-read and packaged. However you may feel about the writing or the story, the product – with a very few exceptions – is a professional one.

So while signing with a publisher will get you an editor who works with you on story structure and characterization and sometimes grammar, and a copy-editor who checks all your facts and figures and makes sure you’re not messing up your history, and a proof-reader who makes sure (after you do) that you haven’t left any errors, and a cover artist, and a cover designer, and an interior designer and formatter, all of whom make sure your book looks as lovely as it can possibly look, not to mention a sales and/or marketing department whose job it is to get your book into the public eye, where it can be seen and bought – because nobody can buy it if they don’t know it’s there... when you’re self-publishing, you have to do all those things yourself, or hire someone to do them for you.

It isn’t for the faint of heart.

If you don’t get off on the control, it’s probably not for you.

If your heart doesn’t beat a little faster at the thought of being the master of your own fate, you’re probably better off with a publisher.

And if you just want to write, and you don’t want to deal with the cover design, or the marketing, or the whole career-building bit, do yourself a favor and go the traditional route.

You’ll be happier, trust me.

It isn’t for everyone.

And that’s fine. Not being a self-publisher doesn’t make you a failure, any more than not being able to sell a book to traditional publishing ten years ago made you a failure. It made you not a good fit. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Because if self-pub is just another way of getting product to market, it’s not better or worse than any other way of getting product to market.

It’s neither the anti-Christ nor the second coming. It’s a direction you can choose to take your career, if you think it’s something you’ll enjoy. Or it’s a direction you can choose to ignore, if you think you won’t. Trad publishing isn’t going anywhere, in spite of what the first wave of self-publishers claimed five years ago. 70% of all books sold in the U.S. every year are still print books, and getting print books into stores is something you still can’t do on your own. Whether seeing your book on the self at Barnes & Noble or your local indie bookstore is important to you, is something only you can answer for yourself.

There’s good and bad in every aspect of publishing. There’s even a little bit of ugly once in a while. And we all have to choose for ourselves what our priorities are, and where we fit in the scheme of things.

It’s a great time to be a writer. The opportunities are practically endless. And that’s a very good thing!

The Books I'm Thankful For (so far) in 2013

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!

In tradition (well mine at least) of today being Thanksgiving Day, here is a list of ALL the books I've read thus far this year (and have given my highest ratings to), which means I'm Thankful VERY for finding/reading them!! So, here you go (listed in the order of when I read them this year):
  1. "Every Night Forever" [Hyena Heat Series, Book 1] by R. E. Butler: 5 out of 5 stars! In this novel, you'll find that Dante, Cairo, and Mason (originally from "The Wolf’s Mate Book 4: Michael & Shyne") aren't "bad guys," they are just misunderstood. I loved the compelling plot, the relationships that are between the brothers and the relationships that they grow between themselves and Alyssa! It's a very sweet novel; about three guys proving themselves to a woman who deserves their love. [Read more of Jess' Review and 3 Teasers for this book HERE]
  2. "Hooked" [Hooked Series, Book 1] by Liz Fichera: 5 out of 5 stars!! This novel HOOKED me from the very beginning!! I loved the characters!! Plus, I thoroughly enjoyed the back-and-forth POV chapters, like it is in Ms. Barnholdt's "Two-way Street," Ms. Crane's "Stupid and Contagious," & Ms. Elkeles' "Perfect Chemistry" especially since this novel seems to be a unique mix of all three of these books too!

Ryan & Fred are great together! Their banter and their growing respect for each other make it so that no matter what really happens between them they can never fully dislike the other. Only two things I wish would have happened for me to enjoy this novel even more... [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  3. "How Beauty Saved the Beast" [Tales of the Underlight Series, Book 2] by Jax Garren (aka Jennifer Hinson): 5 out of 5 stars!! Now that "Beauty" has met the "Beast," it is time to save him! This is one vivacious novel that I did not want to put down! Jolie & Hauk are so similar it was like they were made for each other! I could not get enough of these two and their cast of colorful friends!

Plus, if you were like me and ended up skipping (aka not reading) "How Beauty Met the Beast," book 1 in this series, than never fear! [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  4. "Sexting While Working" by Morgan Marek: 5 out of 5 stars! Two co-workers find out that they are each others secret sexting partner while in a boardroom conference together. This hot, steamy, and racy novella it one that keeps you entertained! It also helps that it has a great plot line, along with exciting characters!

I highly recommend this novella to anyone looking for a quick erotic read that has the potential for romance! [Read more of Jess' Review and a Teaser for this book HERE]
  5. "Swept Away" [Trouble in Texas Series, Book 1] by Mary Connealy: 5 out of 5 stars!! This witty, funny, adventurous novel keeps you on your toes with it's no nonsense style group of men, who are as close as brothers, trying to bring law and order to a wayward town. I was very surprised with some of the twists that came up! Also--even though it never happened--am still waiting for one of Ruthy's "family" to show up from the dead just to cause even more trouble. =0)

Luke's friends were wonderful characters! [Read more of Jess' Review and 3 Teasers for this book HERE]
  6. "Wildcat" [The Cat Star Chronicles, Book 9] by Cheryl Brooks (aka Samantha R. Michaels): 5 out of 5 stars!! This is the best novel of Ms. Brooks' Cat Star Chronicles thus far!! I could not get enough of Sara and Jerden!! Reading about their personal tragedies and how they worked together to get over their fears was heartwarming and very erotic. =0)

Yet, the novel's plot flowed wonderfully from beginning to end. Very well written. Plus, I enjoyed getting updates on Tarq, Lucy, Jack, Cat, Bonnie, Lynx, Dax, Ava, and all of their families!! [Read more of Jess' Review and 3 Teasers for this book HERE]
  7. "The Boys of Summer" [Summer Series, Book 1] by C. J. Duggan: 5 out of 5 stars--a teenage girl grows up and comes into her own during the summer before her Year Twelve begins because of good friends, forbidden love, and a whole lot of fun late night activities!

I fell in love with this novel, mostly because of how Tess blooms throughout it and because of her unique and growing relationship with Toby. They were so sweet together. Plus, I loved how she seemed to make him a better version of himself too.

The Onslow Boys, especially Sean & Toby, along with Adam & Chris were a fun bunch to read about! [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  8. "Rush Me" by Allison Parr: 5 out of 5 stars!! Two supposed opposites meet unexpectedly and get into a relationship that neither of them are used to but both want desperately to keep! I could not get enough of Ryan & Rachael!! They were snarky, fun, and brought positive changes into each other’s lives while they fumbled through their feelings for each other.

This intense novel keeps you on your toes with its romantic twists and laughing with its great cast of secondary characters! Rachael, at times, is so snarky and independent that I would think, "why is she doing that," but then I'd realize that I act the same way at times too which made me sympathize with her more then I expected too. [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  9. "A Night Like This" [The Smythe-Smith Quartet Series, Book 2] by Julia Quinn (aka JQ): 5 out of 5 stars! This is hilariously energetic novel keeps you on your toes while encouraging you to fall in love with its compelling cast of characters! I loved Daniel & Anne! Their story was one I did not completely expect yet it kept me riveted the whole way through. If only there was more! =0)

And the secondary characters! Good god! They made this novel full of twists I never saw coming, and so very fun to read! [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  10. "How Beauty Loved the Beast" [Tales of the Underlight Series, Book 3] by Jax Garren (aka Jennifer Hinson): 5 out of 5 stars, two friends and "soul mates" fight the biggest battle of their lives in order to win each other's heart, as well as, to defeat their enemy. This was an epic ending to a delightfully fun series! I love how strong willed and determined Jolie throughout this novel! Also, I just could NOT get enough of Jolie & Hauk they are the perfect "Beauty & the Beast" couple!!

It will be interesting to see how Ms. Garren will expand on this series once she switches to Book 4 making Brayden the hero and Ashley (oh, how I hope Ms. Garren makes her likeable somehow) the heroine. [Read more of Jess' Review and a Teaser for this book HERE]
  11. "Witch Bound" [Twilight of the Gods Series, Book 2] by Eleri Stone: 5 out of 5 stars!! This is a romance about a girl who is still coming into her own while being thrown into situation after situation she never expected to be in, especially when one of those situations happens to be falling for her groom's best man!

I could not get enough of this story, mostly because of how Rocky and Fen's relationship comes together! Fen & Rocky have this instant attraction that neither (at first) wants to mess with--because of what it would do to Rocky's family, the groom/Fen's best friend, and Fen & Christian's clan--but as everything grows between them, once they start up a friendship, by the end of the book it's hard for them to stay apart no matter what their original plans were. =0) [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  12. "Playing Games" [Games Series, Book 2] by Jessica Clare (aka Jill Myles): 5 out of 5 stars!!!! This is one feisty, fun, adventurous, steamy, erotic, sweet novel that I didn't want to have end or put down! Liam and Katy are quite a pair! Both seem to be complete opposites but soon learn there is more to each of them then what they appear. In addition, they also find out that they are better suited as partners then who they were originally partnered too.

Liam just has this way about him, that pierces Katy's heart in all of the right places!! [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  13. "Heavy Metal" [Goddesses Rising Series, Book 2] by Natalie J. Dramschroder: 5 out of 5 stars, this novel takes up where "Under the Moon" left off and throws you into a world of intrigue, suspicion, romance, passion, and a whole lot of suspense! I loved Riley as a character. She is smart, brave, courageous, and wise beyond her years. Then add Sam with her and I could not get enough of this novel or it's duo!

In addition, if you are like me and haven't read the first novel in this series, DON'T WORRY because you don't need to have read it for you understand the plot or to like the characters!! [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  14. "Indelible" by Bethany Lopez: 5 out of 5 stars!! Love finds you in unexpected places and people. Judd and Sam have had to deal with hard circumstances in their lives that have made them grow up more then the typical college student would have had to put up with. Together these two made a great team, one hot couple, and a fun duo to read about! I loved this novel and I didn't want it to end, even though I was very happy with how it wrapped up!

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes contemporary new adult romances! [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  15. "Battlescars" [Battlescars Series, Book 1] by Sophie Monroe: 5 out of 5 stars!! Charming, thrilling, and sarcastic the whole way through, this is one rock & roll fairy tale that is hard not to love! Aubrey and Jake are a perfect pair, from their humorous antics to Jake's self-deprecating ways to how they come to fight for each other as best they can. I loved their whirlwind romance; especially how Jake goes about trying to win Aubrey over it was all very gentlemanly.

In addition, Jake's band mates were an entertaining bunch all on their own. [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  16. "Drive Me Crazy" [Holland Springs Series, Book 1] by Marquita Valentine: 5 out of 5 stars!! Follow this sweet and spicy romance between a girl who has been in love with her best friend's older brother for just about all of her life and see if it's truly unrequited love or not. It's hard not to get wrapped up in this love story; the main characters are just that captivating. Plus, the sex scenes were a fun and entertaining inclusions too.

Carter & Melanie were one couple that I loved reading about and couldn't get enough of, so I hope they'll be secondary characters in the other books within this series. [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  17. "Desire By Blood" [By Blood Series, Book 1] by Melissa Schroeder (aka Kiera West): 5 out of 5 stars!! Thrust into a marriage neither ever expected, this couple finds ways to overcome their fears and follow their hearts when everything is put on the line...

I loved this dynamic duo! Cordelia with her sass and Nico with his passion made me fly through this novel trying to read more, more, more about them!! This novel got me into vampire romances again! I especially loved that it was based in a historical setting because it gave you a whole new idea of that time period. [Read more of Jess' Review and 2 Teasers for this book HERE]
  18. "Beloved" [Where the Heart Lives Series, Book 3] by Robin Lee Hatcher: 5 out of 5 stars! This fast paced, heart wrenching, historical romance is one that I had a hard time putting down I liked it so much! All of the characters have so much dimension and emotional growth to them throughout this novel that it was hard not to like each of them in some way, well except for Brook of course. With the way this novel is laid out, I believe Diana and Tyson needed their time apart to grow and become the wonderful people they turned out to be, since when they both first got together they weren't a good match up because of how they both were hoping for different things. [Read more of Jess' Review and a Teaser for this book HERE]
  19. "Darkness Awakened" [Darkness Series, Book 1] by Katie Reus (aka Savannah Stuart): 5 out of 5 stars! This fast-paced, action-packed, paranormal romance is one that will hold your attention and wish you could keep on reading even past the ending!!

Finn and Lyra are an unstoppable duo! They also, complete each other in a way that even though they've been separated for about seventeen years their relationship quickly picks up where they left off. It was fun to read about how Finn's pack would accept Lyra and how Lyra was able to hold her own against, almost, everything that came her way. [Read more of Jess' Review and a Teaser for this book HERE]
Goodness! I didn't realize that I LOVED so many novels/novellas (thus far) THIS YEAR!! It's far more then I typically love per year! I hope after reading my reviews and teasers you'll be interested in a few of them too.

It's an eclectic mix of paranormal, contemporary, erotic, Christian, and historical romances! =0)

Anyway ....

Best wishes to you and yours on this day! I hope every one of you will have a WONDERFUL, YUMMY, & HAPPY Thanksgiving! "Just Desserts" [Holland Springs Series, Book 4] by Marquita Valentine

Author's Book Description : What an earl wants isn’t always what he gets...

British billionaire and modern day Earl of Spenserfield, Sebastian Romanov only wants one thing in life: to reclaim his position as president of Romanov Industries. But in order to do that he must convince Holland Springs' favorite caterer, Daisy Barnes, to become his fake fiancée. As Sebastian and Daisy spend more time together, neither can tell where the fake romance ends and true love begins...

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars, this romance is between a man who isn't used to falling in love--yet tries his hardest to brake out of his shell just for the woman he's fallen for--and a woman who's life is falling in shambles around her--yet isn't willing to have a broody knight come sweep her off her feet to take care of her...or is she?

I enjoyed this novel and thoroughly enjoyed reading about the main characters, along with their backgrounds. Sebastian & Daisy are a unique couple, in the sense that once all of their cards are on the table both still want to make the other happy or due whatever is best for them, even if that means making sacrifices for one another. Plus, they have an unusual relationship; in the sense of how they became a couple that was fun to read about!

The only thing that I didn't like was how slow this novel's beginning was, which could have been because it was mostly about previous main characters that I haven't read about. Yet, it took a while for their romance to become something more then just rude remarks and lust to/for each other making it drag a bit.

Overall, though, I do recommend this novel to those who are fans of Ms. Valentine and this series. In addition, this novel is for those who love broody English heroes and stubborn, smart-mouthed, sweet-hearted heroines.

Book Teaser(s) :
“One cupcake again, Jules?” Daisy stared at the order for a moment, then rechecked the on-line form. One red velvet cupcake to be sent to a Mr. Jules Westmoreland in Surrey, England. One cupcake a week. Just like every order he’d made for the last three months. This was getting ridiculous, not to mention she felt guilty as heck that she’d let it go on as long as she had.
She tapped out a tune on her keyboard with the tips of her fingers.
So far, she’d shipped each one via FedEx per his request at the tune of over a hundred and fifty bucks just for shipping. It would be cheaper for him if he’d just order all four at once, and she really should let Jules know.
Brow scrunching, she began to type:

Dear Jules,
How is your dad doing? Has he stopped being a difficult patient yet? When my mother was convalescing at home, there were days I wanted to pull my hair out, because she was so darn stubborn and didn’t want my help. If you have to, leave the room for a minute, or hire someone to help him.
Be strong!
I also wanted to let you know that you could save a lot of money by ordering and having me ship all four cupcakes (baked however you want and whatever flavor icing you want) at once. Please don’t mistake my email as a complaint—I truly want to do what’s best for my customers (and my friends, no matter how recently made) and that includes pointing out where they could save some money.
Let me know if you’d like to change your order.
Smiles,
Daisy

Mr. Westmoreland’s response came faster than she expected. Heck, it was almost nine at night and there was a five-hour time difference.

Daisy,
He remains the same—arrogant, bad-tempered and non-cooperative—and that’s on his good days. Thanks for asking. How goes negotiations with the insurance company? Still insisting the procedures weren’t covered?
I rather like the arrangement we have, but if you feel it would be best to change, I suppose I could order four a week (and run the ten extra miles it would require to eat them).
Make it so.
Your servant,
Jules

She let her head fall against her palm. That’s not what she meant at all. And had he really just quote Captain Picard from Star Trek? She laughed.

J.
Let me know how everything works out. You know you can email me anytime if you need to!
Ugh. Not going there with the insurance. At this rate, I’ll have to sell the house and move in with my best friend, then Glen and I’ll never be able to afford to get married. :}
BTW, I didn’t mean you had to order four cupcakes every week, you goose! I meant you could order all four at the beginning of the month, and I would mail all of them to you at the same time, then all you would have to do is follow my instructions for keeping them fresh.
So sorry for the misunderstanding. I apologize.
Ten points deducted from Hufflepuff.

It was nearly midnight when Sebastian arrived home. He trudged up the stairs, rubbing the back of his neck. For the time being, everything was going according to plan. Liang Technology wanted to do business with Romanov Industries. The details merely had to be worked out. But the devil usually cropped up in those, so he had to be wary and hire his own translators to make sure the agreement would be profitable for both companies.
He blinked, his jaw cracking on a yawn. He needed to sleep and check on Daisy. The report from Ivan said they’d visited the Palace today and the Tower. Though he hadn’t needed one from his bodyguard.
Oh no.
Daisy had texted him at every opportunity, usually with a picture attached. His favorite was of The Tower, her standing beside it and holding a sign that read, Vacancy. Earls Only.
God love her.
A grin kicked up the corners of his mouth as he made his way down the hall to his room. Perhaps he could find a way to have breakfast with her in the morning. ~ within Chapter 17

"Misplaced Princess" [Foreign Affairs Series, Book 1] by Mari Carr & Lexxie Couper

Authors' Book Description : Annie Prince has impetuously flown halfway ’round the world to visit a sexy cowboy she met online—only to find herself stranded in Sydney. Seems she and Dylan crossed wires, and he’s on his way to New York. His twin, Hunter, saves the day and whisks her back to the family cattle station. Hunter’s as easy on the eyes as Dylan, and even easier to talk to. Annie might have flown to Oz to meet one brother, but soon sparks are flying with the other.

Hunter considered Dylan a dumb arse for jetting off to America for some stranger—until he met Annie. Turns out the New Yorker is a smart, funny, hard-working jillaroo...and hotter than the Aussie desert. Hunter’s not normally one to poach his brother’s women, but he can’t keep his hands, lips, tongue and other body parts off this sexy city girl.

When raging lust leads to emotional attachment, where does that leave Annie and Hunter when her vacation comes to an end—or when Dylan finds out?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, this is a really cute and spicy novel! It’s about two people from opposite ends of the world meeting online who, after a while of talking/skyping each other, decide to meet in person. Nevertheless, while they talk about seeing each other they get their wires crossed and end up both finding out that they traveled to the others hometown ... and get their lives turned upside down. Annabel (Annie) finds herself quickly falling into lust with Dylan's twin brother Hunter while she spends two weeks on their station (ranch) in Australia .... maybe their feelings will turn into something more during their time together.

Hunter & Annie are a perfect match of opposites! Yet, they quickly find themselves fighting their growing passion for each other until they both become swept away in something neither wants to give up.

My only wish is that I was more captivated by this novel then I was. The plot was hot. The characters were sweet and funny. Yet, whenever I set the novel down to go about my day I didn't feel that rush to get back to reading it like I typically do. =0/

I recommend it to those who like contemporary erotic romances!

“What’s the deal with the paparazzi? You an actress or something?”
“Dylan didn’t tell you about my family?”
Hunter shook his head. “Nope. Dylan didn’t share much about you at all. Showed me a photo of you a few weeks ago. Besides that and the fact you don’t read your emails carefully, I don’t know a thing about you.” Hunter didn’t mention the soul mate comment.
“I’m a journalist. I work for a magazine in New York.”
“Didn’t realize journalists were so popular in the States.”
She flashed him a dirty look. “It’s not my job that interests the press, it’s my name. I’m Annie Prince.”
He shook his head. “I’m still not following you.”
“Prince Incorporated?”
Hunter recognized that name even less. “Nope. Haven’t got a bloody clue what you’re talking about.”
“I guess Monet was right. She said there had to be somewhere on the planet where I could live incognito. Go Australia.” She raised one fist in a cheer for his country.
“I don’t know who this Monet is, but that’s not exactly true. You’re in Sydney and there are cameramen following you.”
She blew out a long, frustrated breath. “Yeah. My family owns and operates a huge conglomeration of newspapers, magazines, hotels and other properties. Our net worth is in the billions. For some insane reason, this makes us interesting to people. Not to mention the fact my dad is a bit of a glory hound, constantly doing stuff to draw attention to himself. My two sisters have followed in his footsteps and now star on the most inane, idiotic reality series ever to air on television. And I suppose everyone expects me to be the same, to want the same spotlight cast on my life.”
“But you don’t?”
God no. Did you see me pose for photos? Your ranch in the middle of the desert actually sounds like paradise.”
Hunter scoffed. “I think you’re the first woman, besides my mother, to ever feel that way. And it’s not a ranch. It’s a station.”
Annie ignored his correction. Maybe she was used to it. He’d heard Dylan tell her a time or two when he’d accidentally eavesdropped on their chats. She let out a wobbly sigh. “What the hell am I going to do now?”
Hunter studied her desolate face and was sorry Dylan hadn’t invited her for a visit. The idea of Annie spending a week or two on their family’s cattle station was very appealing. ~ within Chapter 1
