My Q&A with Cheryl Brooks :
Jess : What books did you enjoy reading while growing up?
Cheryl : I read a lot as a kid, mostly Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden books. I also loved reading any kind of horse story and anything by Mary Stewart and Georgette Heyer that I could get my hands on. I credit Mary Stewart for my affinity for writing in first person.
Jess : Please describe Wyatt from "Must Love Cowboys" in 1-2 sentences.
Cheryl : Wyatt McCabe is one of those tortured alpha heroes that have such a strong appeal for romance readers. His past keeps him from letting himself get close to anyone for fear of losing them, but his attraction to Tina is such that he can’t deny it.
Jess : Are there any differences and/or similarities between Tina from "Must Love Cowboys" and Lauren from your novella "Cowboy Delight?"
Cheryl : Obviously, they’re both single women, but there are probably more differences between the two than there are similarities. Lauren had never felt the spark of attraction for a man, and Tina had been too shy and nervous to act on it when she did. Tina has never considered herself to be very attractive, whereas most of Lauren’s problems stemmed from being too attractive.
Jess : What sparked the idea for "Must Love Cowboys?"
Cheryl : I have a friend who loves firefighters, and even though I was writing a series about cowboys, I saw my chance to at least make one of the heroes a former firefighter. Wyatt’s character developed out of an idea about his past and why he gave up firefighting to become a cowboy. When I pitched the idea of his character to one of my RWA chapter’s speakers, her response was that his perfect match would have to be Amish or someone equally pure, and Tina’s character developed out of that suggestion.
Jess : What is the funniest thing one of your characters in "Must Love Cowboys" said or did?
Cheryl : That would be telling! Besides, I don’t know for sure, but it was probably something Bull or Dean did. They were both great fun to write.
Jess : If you could write "Must Love Cowboys" all over again, would you change anything about it?
Cheryl : Not really. It was originally written as an erotic romance, so I’ve already changed it to fit the current genre. If you’ve read the book, I think you can guess who Tina’s other sexual partner was.
Jess : Out of all the secondary characters in "Must Love Cowboys," do you have one or two favorites? If so, who are they and why?
Cheryl : I loved writing all of them, but Bull Russell and Nick Reno were the most fun. Anytime I get the opportunity, I throw in at least one outrageous character, and in this series, Bull is that character. If you know your Georgette Heyer novels, you’ll understand where that idea came from. Nick was also a fun character. He didn’t have much of a filter on his speech, but his personality is endearing enough that you don’t care when he speaks his mind. Dean is another favorite of mine. He—oh, who am I kidding? I love them all!
Jess : Which is your favorite book that you’ve written and why?
Cheryl : The book I’m currently writing is usually my favorite, although I still have a soft spot for "Rebel," book ten of the Cat Star Chronicles. Onca was one of those outspoken, outrageous heroes, and I love him to pieces!
Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works?
Cheryl : I’m working on a contemporary paranormal romantic suspense trilogy, which is taking forever because of all the research that writing it has required. I’ve finished the first two books and as soon as this blog tour is over, I’ll start on the third. No telling when or how the series will be published. After that, I plan to write a “second generation” Cat Star book.
Jess : YAY!! About the possibility of another Cat Star Series!! *BIG SMILES OVER HERE* Thank you for joining me!! =0)
