"Bear's Secret Baby" [Emerald City Shifters Series, Book 3] by Kit Fawkes (aka Kit Tunstall, Kit Kyndall, Lilly LaRue, Kristianna Sawyer, Aurelia Skye, T. K. Reilley, R. E. Saxton, & Desdemona St. Claire)

Author's Book Description : Shayla adopted her niece at birth when her sister turned her back on the baby without a real explanation, besides the “strangeness” of the father’s people. Aislinn is ill, and the doctors have given up hope, so she takes the girl to Bear Island, where her father and his people live, praying for a miracle. She finds truths she isn’t ready to face among a clan of bear-shifters. In Kade, she finds an angry bear denied the knowledge of his daughter’s existence. There is more beneath the anger, and when he looks at her, she knows he feels the pull between them too. Their attraction is as impossible as it is irresistible, but they must work together when an outside force tries to remove the baby from both of them.

My Book Review : 5 out of 5 stars! Shayla is looking for a way to save her (few week old) niece, Aislinn, and she’s at her wits end. The doctors have all basically given up on her, so now Shayla decides to take Aislinn to Aislinn’s father in hopes he’ll have an idea in how to help. Yet in doing so opens up more questions than answers. Will they be able to trust each other enough to overcome Aislinn’s problem and become a family of sorts? Or will outside forces tear their family apart even more?

With this being a short story/novella, I really liked how its setup and flow was written. It has an intriguing premise too that made me feel that for it being a paranormal romance it was plausible in its execution. In addition, it didn’t hurt that with its feisty characters I was entertained the whole way through.

While I didn’t find Shayla and Kade to have an immediate connection, I liked how their irritation grew into a soft respect and into something more. The reason behind them being mates was reasonable and definitely, a unique take on that type of situation. Also, I enjoyed their interaction with Aislinn and most of the scenes she was involved in (baby love).

This novella might be set in a series but it is stand-alone enough that you don’t have to be worried about being lost. I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick spicy paranormal romance!

“What’s so funny?”
She shook her head, waiting until her urge to giggle had passed before she spoke. “You’re just so sweet and adorable. It wasn’t at all what I was expecting.”
He quirked a brow. “What were you expecting?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess sharp teeth, long claws, and perhaps some slobbering.”
Kade’s chest puffed out. “I’ll have you know I never slobber, woman.”
She giggled again, unable to fight back the giddiness sweeping through her. ~ within Chapter 4
She seemed reluctant, but she stopped arguing. “I guess you’re right.”
He winked at her. “I’m always right. It’s good that you’re realizing that now.” ~ within Chapter 6
