Book Excerpt :

Nathaniel Gresham, Viscount Hightower, stirred in his sleep. His hands groped for bedclothes, found nothing. Sensing wrongness, his consciousness rose through layers of befuddlement and wisps of dreams. He opened his eyes to find a gaping maw of three-inch fangs inches from his throat.
“Aah!”
Nathaniel threw up his arms to shield his face and twisted to the side. The convulsive movement brought him right to the edge of a large four-poster bed, and he scrambled to avoid falling three feet to the floor. He twisted in the opposite direction and struck out at the sharp, yellowed teeth. They did not snap shut on his forearm or lunge into his face once more. Indeed, they did not move at all, except sideways under his blow. There was no snarl or slaver, no spark of rage in the shiny eye behind the fangs. Nathaniel shoved them farther away and sat up.
He was stark naked, on a large bed stripped bare of linens, covered only by a moth-eaten gray wolf skin. The wretched thing’s head had been carefully placed on his chest, to ensure the rude awakening. His hips still rested under its hindquarters. Molting fur peppered the bed. The mere sight of the ancient pelt made his skin itch. Revolted, he pushed it all the way off and moved to the foot of the bed, struggling to get his bearings. This wasn’t his bedchamber. The blue-striped wallpaper was alien, the furnishings unfamiliar; the windows with their slant of early morning light were in the wrong place. Then he remembered. He was staying at the Earl of Moreley’s country house, because tomorrow—no, today—he was to marry the earl’s daughter at their local parish church.
Nathaniel glared at the wolf skin, then rubbed his hands over his face. This was what it meant to have five brothers—five younger brothers—on one’s wedding day. Or rather, on one’s wedding eve, a night they’d insisted upon marking with bowls of rack punch. Had it been three? Or had he lost count? No wonder they’d kept filling his glass, if they had this prank planned. Where the devil had they found a wolf skin in a strange house? And hadn’t he told his father, when Robert was born in his sixth year, that four sons were quite enough? Even for a duke, six sons were excessive. At this particular moment, Nathaniel thought that his parents might have been content with just one.
He rose, stretching stiff limbs and marveling that he had only a mild headache. Revenge on his brothers would have to wait for another day. Today, he was getting married. He was doing his duty to his name and his line, pledging himself to a woman who would be an admirable duchess when their turn came—may it be far in the future. The match was eminently suitable. All society acknowledged its rightness. And despite Violet’s irascible grandmother, the occasional bane of his existence, he could have no complaints.
Indeed, why had the word even occurred to him? No one had rushed him into marriage. He had enjoyed a plenitude of seasons in London and a number of agreeable flirtations and liaisons with delightful females. Though they had never spoken of it, he was aware that his parents had given him every opportunity to fall in love. But the passion that had overtaken them in their young days had not befallen him. He wasn’t sure why, but once he’d passed thirty he concluded it never would. He’d had more than enough time to observe that such a bond was rare in the circles of the haut ton.
Nathaniel stretched again, his bare limbs a bit chilly. This marriage was certainly not a penance. He liked Violet very much. They’d been acquainted for years. He did not know whether she’d had other offers, but he supposed that she too had waited for love to find her. They had that in common. They were also well suited by background, had similar tastes, and enjoyed the same even temperament. When he’d decided that the time for marriage had come, he’d simply known that she was the proper candidate. He expected their union to be gracious, harmonious, and ideal for the significant position they would someday be called upon to fulfill. And now it was time to stop wool- gathering, put on his dressing gown, and begin this momentous day.
Nathaniel walked over to the oaken wardrobe on the far wall and opened it.
It was empty. All his clothes had disappeared.
He stared at the bare hooks. This part of the prank would be Sebastian’s doing, he imagined. It had his next younger brother’s touch. Nathaniel met his own gaze in the mirror set into the wardrobe door, and acknowledged the spark of amused annoyance in his eyes. His brothers had a fiendish facility for complicated jests.
The figure in the glass shook its head. All the sons of the Duke of Langford were tall, handsome, broad-shouldered men with auburn hair and blue eyes. Sebastian was the tallest. Robert the wittiest. Randolph was acknowledged as the handsomest, James the most adventurous, and Alan the smartest. But he was the eldest, and the heir.
For as long as he could remember, Nathaniel had felt the weight of his destiny. The others said it was a burden to have everything done ahead of them, but he’d felt the onus of being the pattern, setting up the expectations, being the son visitors scrutinized the most. He would be the next duke; he must show he was worthy. Thus, he kept a tight rein on his wilder impulses. Instead, he was the one who came to the rescue when one of his brothers went too far, kicking up a lark.
And so now, he did not slam the empty wardrobe shut, but simply closed it. He would leave it to his valet to straighten this out. He wanted hot water for washing, and then clothes, and then breakfast. He went to ring for Cates, and discovered that the bell rope had been removed. He could see the wire to which it had been connected, near the ceiling, twelve feet up. It must have taken two or three of his brothers to reach so high.
For a moment he just stood there, staring at it. This final touch would be Robert’s idea, no doubt. He’d always been the most ingenious, the brother who added the crowning climax to a prank. Robert would be the one to set the others guffawing—describing their elder brother slinking through the corridors of the Earl of Moreley’s house wrapped in a wolf skin, like some sort of demented ancient Celt. Even Nathaniel had to smile at the picture. How would Violet’s fierce stickler of a grandmother like that? And all the other near and distant relations visiting for the wedding? He’d barely met most of them. Perhaps he’d twine some ivy from outside the window in his hair and attempt a Gaelic war cry.
Nathaniel laughed. Truth to tell, it was a splendid prank, unfolding like a puzzle box upon its hapless victim. All that remained was for him to wiggle out of the trap so cunningly set.
He eyed the windows and considered pulling down some of his almost-mother-in-law’s elaborate draperies to wrap about himself. But one panel would trail behind him like a coronation robe. The picture was little better than the wolf skin. Perhaps he would just wait until Cates arrived on his own. It couldn’t be too much longer. In fact, judging by the sunlight, his valet ought to have appeared well before now. Where the devil was he?
As if in answer to this thought, there was a knock at the door.
“Nathaniel?”
The voice was the last he expected. “Violet?”
“Are you all right? James said you needed to speak to me most urgent—” The door opened, and Nathaniel’s promised bride looked around the panels. “Oh!” Her mouth dropped open.
Nathaniel—stark naked, next to a bed sporting only a rumpled wolf skin—braced for a shriek, a shocked retreat, babbled apologies. But Violet just looked at him. Indeed, it seemed as if she couldn’t tear her eyes away. He could almost feel her gaze traveling along his skin, as if it left trails of warmth. He saw something stir in those gray eyes, something he’d never observed before, and his body began to respond to the possibility of much more than he’d expected from his suitable marriage. Respond all too eagerly.
Nathaniel moved over behind the bed. “My brothers’ idea of a joke,” he said with a gesture toward the wolf skin.
Violet blinked. Color flooded her cheeks, and she looked away. “How did they...?” Her voice was rather choked.
“They are endlessly inventive. They stole my clothes as well. Would you have someone send Cates to me? I would ring but”—he pointed to the bell wire—“they were quite thorough.”
Violet glanced at the denuded wire, swallowed, and gave a quick nod. “Of course.” In the next instant, she was gone.
“Well, well,” murmured Nathaniel to the wolf. “That was interesting.”
His days of being capable of interest long past, the wolf made no reply.

Blog Tour - Feasted On: The Arrival by Nicole MacDonald | Interview, Review, & Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Nicole MacDonald, who I interviewed about her novel "The Arrival," which is the 1st book her BirthRight Trilogy!!

ALSO -- Be sure to comment on this post to be able to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAY (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from November 12, 2012 - March 11, 2013]

My Q&A with Nicole MacDonald :

Jess : Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Nicole : I am thirty year old kiwi (New Zealander) who works fulltime as a receptionist while moonlighting as a novelist. I live in a small town in Wellington that’s surrounded by rolling green hills and forest, with my partner and our dog and cat.

Jess : Which of your characters would you most & least to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Nicole : Most – Elena, the sorceress of Elion. She is one who has lived centuries and seen so many things and she knows almost everyone of interest on Gar’nyse. There are so many things I’d love to know!

Least – Jenviet, the sorceress of the South. A woman hell bent on achieving her family desire of world domination. She gets a distinct pleasure from breaking anyone who opposes her.

Jess : Please describe "The Arrival" in 50 words or less.

Nicole : A kick-ass story about four good friends fighting for their lives, love and the new world they’ve arrived on.

Jess : What sparked the idea for your BirthRight Trilogy?

Nicole : A fantastic thunderstorm over the Wellington harbor. I’ve always loved thunderstorms and it just sparked the first idea of a fight scene.

Jess : Please describe Catherine, Sian, Kassandra, & Laura, from "The Arrival," in one to two sentences each.

Nicole : Catherine is a redhead who loves her friends dearly. She likes teasing boys but doesn’t fully believe in ‘true love’ and enjoys her solitude.

Kassandra is the oldest of the friends and an absolute sweetheart. Always there for her friends when needed.

Sian is the petite but formidable blond of the group. She loves to play up her tiny stature and then shock the heck out of people.

Loi is the youngest but tallest of the group and can seem rather shy to an outsider. She takes a bit to warm to people, but once you’re a friend she’ll defend you with her life.

Jess : If "The Arrival" were to be made into a film, who do you see playing the leading male characters in your trilogy and why?

Nicole : I can really only go on looks alone so:
For Alek—Sean Faris—he has the dark hair, height and blue eyes.

For Sabyn—Chris Hemsworth—the right sort of brooding look

For Daron—Dwayne Johnson—I love the ‘intense’ frown he has and the cheesy grin.

For Rumal—Tyrese Gibson—The gorgeous dark skin and piercing gaze.

For Gredel—Dash Mihok—the ruddy complexion and understated good looks.

Jess : Out of all of the secondary characters within your BirthRight Trilogy, do you have one or two favorites so far? If so, who are they and can you tell us why?

Nicole : I love Ada, probably because she is directly inspired by my grandmother who I very much adore in real life. In reality my nana didn’t have the easiest life and with Ada I’m able, in a sense, to give her the life I know she would have loved.
And then there are too many other characters I like to choose!

Jess : What is the most romantic thing one of your characters, from "The Arrival," said or did?

Nicole : Oooo.. that’s tricky. Everyone has such different thoughts on romance. I do love the part where Rumal comforts Kassie when she cries. It’s the little gestures that can mean so much.

Jess : In regards to "The Arrival," if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Nicole : I would be tempted to make it a little darker. But now, having written the third, I look on the whole trilogy like a relationship. "The Arrival" is the fluffy joyful first part where all is so bright and exciting! "Awakening" is the part of a relationship where you start to realize that even love isn’t ‘perfect’ and the third book, "Feel the Burn," is the time when you have to fight for it, to prove the worth both to yourself and everyone else. The hard part that once you succeed, you know the relationship can survive anything.

Jess : What appeals to you when writing a romance novel?

Nicole : *lol* Oh shucks ;p I blush, I cry, I get frisky (partner likes that part). I rave and rant and get ridiculously emotional. It’s a horrible, intense and absolutely joyful experience, just like any good romance.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Nicole : Three. And possible "Feel the Burn," because it’s the last. But I love each book for it’s own distinct flavor.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Nicole : I’m working on a dystopian steampunk that was inspired by a crazy dream I had. I can’t reveal much yet because I’m still figuring out the plot!

Jess : Have you ever gone out in public with your shirt on backwards, or your slippers on, and when realizing it, just said screw it?

Nicole : Frequently. I do the absent minded thing all too often. Shirt buttoned on inside out (wondered why the buttons seemed weird) forgetting to zip my skirt up so flashing my underwear and once, glancing down to spot yesterday’s stockings hanging off the bottom of my trousers *lol*.

Jess : If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Nicole : "Blazing your own trail with burnt fingers."

Jess : List 3 books you just recently read and would recommend?

Nicole : "Queen of kings" – YES!
"The Other Boleyn Girl" – YES!
"Fifty Shades" - No. No. No. *shudder* So far from my version of romance.

"The Arrival" [The BirthRight Trilogy, Book 1] by Nicole MacDonald

My Book Summary : Four best friends cast what they believe to be a simple love spell that doesn't turn out to be simple, or even ordinary, at all! Especially when they conclude that they've been sent to another planet, now knowing they'll never see their families again, finding that they now have their own set of magical powers, and are asked to help out in a war that they aren't sure they want to be a part of.

If only they could just follow their hearts and have a fairytale life that they've always dreamed but they are coming to realize that everything comes with a price, the question is how much are they willing to pay?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! This world-win trilogy beginning keeps you on your toes while emerging you into a culture that is so like our own in many ways yet has a magical and mystical feel to it that delights your senses! I loved how this novel builds you up for what is to come throughout this series. However, it did take me some time to get used to how the author liked to switch her POVs, since it flowed well for everyone but when she was talking from Catherine's (Cat) POV and only because she usually used more "I" sentences with her then anything. For example, (the first two sentences are from Laura's--Loi--POV while the last five sentences are from Cat's POV):
Loi could see Kassie was ready to explode. Opening her mouth to tell her to calm down Loi froze when she noticed her clothes, “Guys, where are our costumes?”
After an initial panicked thought of ‘WHAT! I’M NAKED?’ I realised I did have clothes on. But they weren’t mine. There were sounds of astonishment as we stared at our ‘new’ outfits. It was kind of similar to my costume. ~ within Chapter 3

Nevertheless, all of the characters are great to read about, especially with their diverse personalities! However, if I had to choose I would say my favorite is Kassandra (Kassie) & Rumal! They just seem so cute together! Plus, I LOVED Audrey (Audi) Cat's dog! *hehee* She livened up the novel with her playfulness and antics!

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes sci-fi-ish fantasy romances!

Author's Book Trailer :

Book Teaser(s) :
“What happened?” She sounded confused and had one hand pressed to her head.
“The tehnear lunged at us and you,” Alek’s mind warned him against mentioning the energy pulse. “You clipped your head when I pushed you out the way, I’m so sorry!”
I turned to face him, my hands on his knees to hold myself steady and looked into his eyes. They were sincere though guarded. “Don’t apologise.” I smiled at him, “You saved me.”
Alek stared back at me; an indecipherable expression on his face then lifted a hand and gently cupped my face. He pulled me close and pressed his lips to mine.
He felt Cat jolt in shock then relax and sink into his embrace. Alek wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her in and slid his other hand under her hair. He’d never found himself so aroused from such a simple kiss. She sighed against his lips and he deepened the kiss, wanting more.
‘Errrr, do you think you could do that somewhere private?’ Loushka’s voice came into his mind, she sounded amused.
Alek jerked back from me and flushed red. ~ within Chapter 13

Book Excerpt :

The track quickly led to the river and I dropped my stuff near the edge. Kneeling, I dunked my top in the water and scrubbed it full of soap. I heard some splashes and smiled.

Audi’s such a water baby and as long as it was by choice, rather than me giving her a bath, she would swim anywhere. It sounds like she's having fun. I swished the top under the water, rinsing the soap out. The splashes sounded closer and I glanced up.

Alek stood in the middle of the river, the water lapping mid thigh on him.

I froze.

He was magnificent. The water cascaded down his taut, muscular body, his blue black hair shoved back out of his eyes and his white essentially see-through undergarment.

My jaw dropped. I don’t think I’d ever seen such a fantastic specimen in real life before.

Alek was surprised to see Catherine at the water's edge. He’d thought all the women would have slept for a few more hours, at least. About to call out a greeting, he stopped when he noticed her slack jawed expression.

It was at that point I could suddenly make out the rational voice in my head.

It was screaming; STOP STARING, HE’S LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU.

My eyes jerked up to dark blue ones, regarding me in amusement, one eyebrow arched.

OH MY GOD.

And in the manner of any intelligent, attractive, level headed, sensible female who had been caught out...

I promptly blushed beetroot, muttered something unintelligent, snatched my things and bolted for the tent. I hurtled past Daron who was headed toward the river.

Blog Tour - Idolizing In: Winter Fire by Kathy Fischer-Brown | Interview, Review, & Gift Card Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Kathy Fischer-Brown, who I interviewed about her novel "Winter Fire!!"

ALSO -- Be sure to check out Rafflecopter at the bottom of this post to be able to sign up for this blog stop's GIVEAWAY(s)!! [Blog Tour will run from December 5 - January 30, 2015]

My Q&A with Kathy Fischer-Brown :

Jess : Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Kathy : A product of the “Boomer” Age, I grew up on Long Island, but now call Central Connecticut home. I’m a wife, mother, and grandmother who’s been to Woodstock and traveled to a few other interesting places over the years. In college and grad school I majored in theater and taught for a while at a small all-girls college in the Midwest. But writing has always been my first love.

I write the sorts of books I like to read. When not writing, I take pleasure in reading the sorts of books I wish I’d written. I also enjoy an occasional romp in the yard (when it’s not too cold and snowy) with our dogs—Aimee, an ageless, adorable but bossy Cairn terrier, and Evie, a young rambunctious mutant springer spaniel. Cooking is one of my creative outlets, as is photography and transforming photos I’ve taken into paintings and greeting cards. I’m also an avid sports fan, especially New York teams and UConn women’s basketball.

Jess : Please describe Zara, from "Winter Fire," in one to two sentences.

Kathy : A young New York Dutch heiress—the product of two worlds, a part of both but accepted by neither.

Jess : Which of your characters would you most & least like to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Kathy : Rufus Grey, Zara’s uncle in "Winter Fire" is the least likely to receive an invitation to my table. He’s a drunken bully with a mean streak, who’d probably break my favorite dinner plates (not to mention our lovely Prague crystal). Second on my “do not invite” list would have to be Arthur Darvey from "Lord Esterleigh’s Daughter." Although he’s refined, well-educated, and a decent conversationalist, he’s a sociopath with a nasty agenda. As for those who’d be welcome, I think it would be amusing to seat Tony Granville (from "The Partisan’s Wife") next to Mercy Van Allen from the same book. Tony is a self-deprecating, self-destructive man from an aristocratic family, who’s endowed with a wry sense of humor and a penchant for card tricks. Mercy is an eccentric, but very caring woman whose love of animals and the downtrodden would make an entertaining dinner guest.

Jess : Please describe "Winter Fire" in 75 words or less.

Kathy : Against all odds, in a time of violence and prejudice, two lost souls discover a love that will help them survive...if only they can learn to compromise.

Jess : Are there any differences and/or similarities between Ethan from your "Winter Fire" novel and Peter from your Serpent’s Tooth Trilogy?

Kathy : Their similarities lie in the fact that both are in love with the heroines of the books, Zara and Anne. Other than that, they are quite different. First of all there’s their physical appearance. While Ethan is dark and brooding, Peter is fair and whimsical. Ethan is more experienced in life and jaded by his past. He’s a “loner,” while the reader of "Lord Esterleigh’s Daughter" first meets Peter as a young idealist who has yet to address his disappointments and find direction in his life. Peter is gregarious and irresponsible...a result of his youth and having opportunity served up on a platter. Both undergo changes when they become “involved” with the women in the stories. Ethan puts his life at risk when he rescues Zara and protects her from the mob intent on seeing her hanged for Rufus Grey’s murder. Peter’s transformation from a carefree boy to a man with a dangerous mission evolves over the course of three books, both independent of and reliant on his relationship with Anne.

Jess : What sparked the idea for "Winter Fire?"

Kathy : I can’t put my finger on any one thing. Watching the Daniel Day-Lewis movie, Last of the Mohicans probably helped solidify an idea that had been germinating for some time. Further research into 17th and 18th century “captive narratives” definitely ignited the flame.

Jess : What is the saddest thing one of your characters, from "Winter Fire," said or did?

Kathy : After waiting out the winter for Ethan’s return at the home of his sister’s family, Zara comes to the painful conclusion that she can’t stay with him. She realizes that the cultural differences between them—not to mention that she’s wanted for murder—are too much to impose upon him. Her feelings for Ethan are too deep and pure for her to wish anything but happiness on him. She feels he’d never be truly content having to compromise so much for her sake.

Jess : What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write in a novel and why?

Kathy : One of many, but this stands out. I enjoyed writing the scene in the mapling cabin in the woods between Zara and Ethan’s sister Ellen. It’s an enlightening moment for both women as each slowly discovers that, despite their differences, they share a lot in common. It was also fun to add a little lightness and laughter into this dark story.

Jess : In regards to "Winter Fire," if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Kathy : Interesting... I don’t think I’d change anything. Maybe I wouldn’t include the two “graphic” love scenes. Some readers complained they weren’t necessary, but that kind of thing is subjective.

Jess : Out of all of the secondary characters within Winter Fire, do you have one or two favorites so far? If so, who are they and can you tell us why?

Kathy : Bear, the dog...just because I love dogs. Abby, the little girl, Ethan’s niece and Bear’s best friend, was a change of pace to write. Being so young and impressionable, she presents a view of the other characters from a unique vantage point.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Kathy : I’ve written around ten over the years, but only four have been published. The others remain hidden away or on my hard drive or on various by-now-unreadable-disks, awaiting time for me to pull them out and dust them off. Of the published books, "The Partisan’s Wife" is probably my favorite for no other reason than having experienced deep feelings of loss, emptiness, and being “out of time” after I submitted the final edits to my publisher.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Kathy : Of course, there are the aforementioned books languishing on my computer and assorted disks. One in particular is a time travel, tentatively titled "From Time to Time." Every few years or so the characters begin chattering in my head and it’s all I can do to silence them. It’s a fun story, about a Revolutionary War era British officer who finds himself in the modern age, smack dab in the middle of a re-enactment of the battle from which he was mysteriously whisked away. The heroine is an American History professor and part-time town historian. When he realizes that somehow, history has been changing—ever so slowly, they must go back in time to get it back on the “right” track. My original idea had them involved in Benedict Arnold’s treason and one of its many convolutions, including a plot to capture George Washington. One of these days I hope to return to it.

Then there’s my “eternal” epic fantasy, "Sword of Names," which I hope to finish sooner than later. I’ve been writing it off and on for a number of years, as it continues to grow more and more epic. This is also a fun book, with pretty much everything one would expect of an epic fantasy: a cross-dressing heroine under a spell, a bumbling sorcerer, a young ne’er do well who finds purpose and friendship while on an impossible quest, a beautiful queen and her betrayed king, her enchanted son and his enchantress, some nasty bad guys…and a magical sword.

Jess : Do you have a favorite aspect of winter or tradition in your family during winter/Holiday season that you’d like to share with us?

Kathy : Actually no. It’s sad, but since both my parents are deceased and my sisters have their own families and we don’t live near each other, there haven’t been any “traditions” upheld around here in a long while. For the past couple of years, since my son and daughter-in-law bought their own place, we’ve been traveling up to Massachusetts to spend Thanksgiving with them. Christmas is quiet around here, although we do try to spend a few days out on Long Island with my husband’s almost 93-year old father, and the members of his family still living out there. Otherwise, I’m not a big fan of winter and prefer warmer weather.

Jess : What cartoon character best represents your personal philosophy?

Kathy : Charlie Brown comes to mind ☺

Jess : If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Kathy : I can’t see anyone wanting to undertake such a thankless and boring task. If so, I think it would be called, "A Great Waste of Time" ☺

Jess : List 3 books you just recently read and would recommend?

About the Author :

As a child Kathy wanted to be a writer when she grew up. She also wanted to act on the stage. After receiving an MFA in Acting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts and playing the part of starving young artist in New York, she taught theater classes at a small college in the Mid-West before returning home to the East Coast, where over the years, she and her husband raised two kids and an assortment of dogs. During stints in advertising, children’s media publishing, and education reform in the former Soviet Unions, she wrote whenever she could.

Her love of early American history has its roots in family vacations up and down the East Coast visiting old forts and battlefields and places such as Williamsburg, Mystic Sea Port, and Sturbridge Village. During this time, she daydreamed in high school history classes, imagining the everyday people behind all the dates and conflicts and how they lived.

Claiming her best ideas are born of dreams, Kathy has written a number of stories over the years. Her first published novel, "Winter Fire," a 1998 Golden Heart finalist in historical romance, was reissued in 2010 by Books We Love, Ltd., which also released "Lord Esterleigh’s Daughter," "Courting the Devil," and "The Partisan’s Wife."

When not writing, she enjoys reading, cooking, photography, playing “ball” with the dogs, and rooting on her favorite sports teams.

"Winter Fire" by Kathy Fischer-Brown

Author's Book Description : When Ethan Caine pulled the unconscious woman from the half-frozen creek, he had no idea that his world was about to explode. Dressed in quilled doeskin of Iroquois design, she stirred up dark secrets from his past. At the same time, she was everything he desired. But she was more Indian than white, and on the run for murder. He needed to know the truth.

Banished by the Seneca Indians who had adopted and raised her, ostracized by the whites in the settlement, Zara Grey wanted only to be accepted. “Ethancaine” treated her with kindness and concern. It was easy to trust him. But her Indian ways disturbed him, and in her heart she would always be Seneca.

Newly Re-edited with a New Cover by Michelle Lee

My Book Review : 5 out of 5 stars!! Born from the same world but raised differently due to circumstances beyond their control two lost souls find themselves drawn together and fight for what is right no matter the cost.

Wow! This touching, deeply moving historical romance throws its readers for a loop by sticking to what would have been true for that time period yet still keeping its "happily-ever-after" too. I liked how Zara (Jiiwi) & Ethan (Ethancaine) came into their romance and fell in love with each other. Also, while over the course of the novel they both make many compromises, neither compromise their beliefs and I liked how they respected each other for their beliefs too.

While I did love Zara & Ethan, this novel is full of POVs from its dynamic secondary characters as well. Those POVs leave you feeling an understanding from a majority of all "sides" in this novel so while you may hate some of the characters' choices (as I did) you can at least see where they are coming from in regards to their actions.

I HIGHLY recommend this novel to those who like historical American romances.

Author's Book Trailer :

Book Teaser(s) :
Not until he was nearly in sight of the opening did complete mindfulness overcome him. His heart leapt in a renewal of hope. It was all he could do to contain the urge to rush inside. He entered warily, rifle at the ready.
At the sound of his approach, someone—or some thing—had taken cover in the shadows of the entryway. He sensed a lurking presence, heard its shallow breaths amid the hissing crackle of the flames. “Zara…?” He spoke softly, his pulses racing.
Cautiously, the shadowy form stepped into the light, a club-like stick raised in its hands as if to strike.
“Ethancaine!” All at once, her look, a combination of resolution and fear, transformed into one of overwhelming delight. The stick slipped from her hands. With the impulsiveness of a child, she rushed toward him, and flung her arms about his neck.
Unprepared for such a spontaneous show of emotion, Ethan clumsily tried to rid himself of the bundle and his rifle. Before he could, she recovered herself and pulled away.
“So happy you come!” A shy smile fluttered over her mouth, pale in the wavering shadows as she averted her eyes. “I think maybe you are hurt. Maybe they find you.”
Despite her show of modesty and concern, the restrained emotions thrilling inside her gripped him with the intensity of their energy. Soft as it was, her voice could not hide it. Her eyes burned with it. Her entire being seemed to exude a force of bright light and its accompanying heat quivered around her.
It touched him as well, a fiery stirring deep inside him. Inspired by more than the simple joy of beholding her or relief that she was safe, the strength of her energy infused him with an overpowering urge to hold her close, to savor the lithe strength of her arms encircling him. ~ within Chapter 10

Book Excerpt :

The buzzing of voices had grown steadily into a boisterous clamor of laughter and friendly banter punctuated by the banging of tankards and table thumping. Only gradually did the din penetrate Ethan's thoughts, compelling him to tear his attention from the road and the image that had branded itself onto his thoughts.

When he turned once again and the room came harshly into focus, he saw that the little gathering by the hearth had been transformed into a minor celebration. Those who had been seated now stood, hoisting their mugs amid toasts and playful teasing.

Slouched against the hearthstones, young Jabez Grey looked pale and confused, his vacant smile giving off an appearance of mild enjoyment. His father had taken a place at the table between the McLaren brothers and swilled ale from two tankards at once, while the others laughed and urged him on. When he had finished, Rufus held the tankards triumphantly over his head, and, staggering slightly, his chin and shirt front glistening with spill, he bellowed for Engles to bring ale for all. Even Jabez was provided with a portion, as the next round of toasts and good wishes resounded from all sides of the table.

“To Jabez, and good fortune!”

“To the bride and groom!”

“Here's to Rufus's new mansion!” Levi Sparks playfully slapped Grey on the back, and they all laughed and drank, conversing loudly among themselves.

“To his coach and four!” another man teased.

‘To his servants! You'll be having servants then, won't you, Rufus?”

One of the men clapped Jabez on the shoulder. “So when's the joyous event, Jabez?” The boy smiled absently and shrugged.

Rufus Grey hoisted his mug. “To the old patroon! To Henry Van Gelder—may he rest in peace—for bequeathing his bounty. To my niece for making this possible. To General Sullivan for finding her when we'd given up hope, and for returning her safe and sound to her loving family. To General Washington for sending Sullivan on his glorious mission to deliver us from the heathen's hatchet. Here's to Zara Grey, gentlemen…my new daughter! My Jabez’s wife!”

Ethan's stomach squeezed into a knot. The woman was promised. To Jabez! He imagined that callow boy sharing her bed, touching her, feeling that silken hair upon his face. The image tore through him like a knife.

You've been living alone far too long, he thought, and he smiled in spite of himself. He swung his legs out from under the table.

“Caine! Ethan Caine!”

Rufus Grey's voice stopped him before he reached the door. He turned, even though his better judgment advised him to continue on. The men at the table fell silent, watching. The entire room pulsed with a strained silence.

“Ain't you going to join us, Caine? Offer your good wishes to my Jabez?” Grey smiled, but his voice held an edge, cold and sharp as an icicle.

Ethan considered Grey's words, and nodded with forced politeness. “I thank you for the invitation, but I've already stayed too long.” He called to Engles, “You'll deliver my goods, won't you, Samuel?” The man nodded grimly.

“Not jealous, are you?” Grey baited him, his voice tinged with a taunting inflection. “Or, can it be, gentlemen, that Mr. Caine is afraid to drink with us?”

Summoning his self-control, Ethan slowly turned back to the gathering. “Have I reason to be afraid?”

“Rumor has it that you're a coward.”

Ethan bristled. It took all his concentration to keep his hands from balling into fists at his sides. “A man of integrity should know better than to believe everything he hears.”

Rufus snorted. “Rumor has it you ain't got no integrity!”

A few of the men laughed uneasily.

Ethan forced a smile. “As I said, I do not subscribe to rumor.”

Grey stiffened, drawing himself up to his full height. “You calling me a liar, Caine?” With his broad shoulders, thick arms, and barrel chest, he presented a daunting sight.

“I'm saying you're misinformed.” Ethan fixed his gaze on Rufus's eyes. Rufus returned the look with an air of smug satisfaction.

The silence rippled with a palpable tension as Grey stepped out slowly from behind the table and approached Ethan with a swaggering gait. A few of his party began to murmur among themselves in discomfort.

“The Coward of Clarkson’s Mill. That's what they call you, Caine. Said you refused to fight. Said you cried like a baby and ran.”

Grey’s words struck Ethan like a fist to his middle, depriving him of breath. The massacre at Clarkson's Mill had happened fifteen years ago, but its very mention triggered off a lightning train of images in his mind. The smell of burning lodges, the acrid odor of sulphur smoke and blood in the snow, overcame him in a wave of nausea. The night of horror was upon him again, ringing in his ears with the screams of the dying.

Ethan pushed back the images, pushed back the nausea and met Rufus's smirking smile with a hard stare. “Whatever you say, Rufus. Now let me be.” At that, Ethan turned on his heel and made a move toward the door. Grey was upon him in an instant, whirling him back around with a large hand to the shoulder, reversing their positions. Grey now stood between Ethan and the door.

“They said you ran, Caine….”

Ethan straightened himself up so that his eyes were level with Grey’s. His muscles tensed. “I never ran from anyone.”

“…like you're running now!”

“You're drunk, Rufus. Get out of my way.”

“Coward. Traitor.”

“I don't want to fight you. Now, let me pass.”

Hands on his hips, Rufus glanced back over his shoulder at the other men. “He says he don’t want to fight!’

“I have no reason to fight you.”

“No. You're too spineless, Caine. I wouldn't waste my time with you anyway.”

Rufus stepped aside, leaving the path clear to the door. With a mocking gesture, he waved Ethan out with a flourish.

Ethan continued to hold him fast with his gaze. “Don't push me, Grey,” he whispered so the others could not hear. “One of these days you'll go too far.”

“Is that a threat, Caine?” Rufus bellowed with laughter. “You threatening me? I believe this coward's threatening me!”

“I don't make threats,” Ethan said softly. “And I never make promises I can't keep.”

"The Dragon’s Appraiser" [Taming the Alpha Anthology, Novella 1] & [The Dragon’s Appraiser (Three Part Story), Part One] by Viola Rivard

Author's Story Description : What can she offer the dragon who could have anything?
Left at the mercy of a dragon god, Madja must use her encyclopedic knowledge of ancient artifacts to charm him into sparing her life.

She will change everything…
Enchanted by the human’s stories, the world-weary dragon discovers a whole new depth to existence.

This is the first novella in an ongoing story.
It contains mature content and is unsuitable for readers under the age of 18.

My Story Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars. Stolen in the middle of the night and left inside dragon “god” Sevrrn's lair as a tribute, Madja's life has just changed for good. Madja never believed Sevrrn was real until he finds her sorting through his riches and tells her she is his now. As they grow into a “companionable” existence together, Madja can't decide if her life has gotten better or worse, since Sevrrn says he will find a way to make that certain she will never die but she will not ever leave him. Though one thing is for sure, it will definitely be an interesting ride...

In truth, while I didn't find this novella romantic I liked reading about Sevrrn and Madja's growing relationship quite a bit. As through Madja's “knowledge,” Sevrrn learns more about his “human” half, which is intriguing all by itself. Add in their sexual interest in one another and it makes for an entertaining read.

"I do not generally eat humans," he informed her.
The 'generally' gave her pause.
Sevrrn went on to say, "Most of them are more bone than meat. I vastly prefer cows. You are fortunate to not be a cow, otherwise I would have most devoured you."
She offered him a weak smile. "Well, you wouldn't happen to have any beef lying around here that I could eat, would you? This is an awfully big pile of treasure. I'll probably starve before I appraise everything."
Sevrrn appeared pensive and then finally nodded. "It is important that you not die."
Thank the gods that we're both in agreement on that. ~ within Chapter 4

"Taking on Tory" [Taming the Alpha Anthology, Novella 2] & [Magic, New Mexico Series, Book 2] by S. E. Smith

Author's Story Description : Twenty-four year old Tory Carson is dying to get out of Magic, New Mexico and explore the world. She has spent her whole life cocooned in the protection of the close-knit community. When she finally gets a chance to go somewhere for three weeks, she would be crazy to say no. Even if, her father is screaming it!

Simon Drayton is a reclusive billionaire who has reinvented himself over and over again through the centuries. He has temporarily settled his headquarters in the beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina.

He is used to taking what he wants. He has learned that wealth and power are potent motivators for those who are greedy. Confusion reigns when he sets his sights on a beautiful, young female who is oblivious to his power. After centuries of getting what he wants, he is shocked, and just a little bit fascinated, when he discovers that not all things are for sale.

Things heat up when the irritating, young ‘human’ woman refuses to play the game by his rules. She isn’t impressed with his wealth. She isn’t impressed with his looks. In fact, she acts like she isn’t impressed by anything he does, even when he flashes his teeth!

Find out what happens when a centuries old Werewolf discovers he isn’t the only creature who loves to bite.

My Story Review : 5 out of 5 stars! Wanting to finally spread her "wings," Tory's older brother allows her to accompany him on a trip to Charleston, South Carolina and unintentionally finds her mate.

This fast-paced paranormal romantic comedy keeps you entertained the whole way through! Tory and Simon's whirlwind romance was fun to read, especially as they go about learning each other. Then even though I found the ending to be a little abrupt, it helped that this novel has a full cast of enjoyable characters that keep you wanting to read more. I HIGHLY recommend this one!

"Broken Communication" [Taming the Alpha Anthology, Novella 3], [Immortal Outcasts Series, Book 1], & [Immortal Ops Series World] by Mandy M. Roth (aka Reagan Hawk, Kennedy Kovit, Rory Michaels, & Elle Spencer)

Author's Story Description : NY Times & USA Today Bestseller!

Genetically altered into a super soldier who can shift into a wolf, Casey Black should have been the perfect asset—but that wasn’t to be. The scientists who conducted DNA splicing experiments on him put a little too much wolf in his cocktail. Considered a danger to society and a risk to the survival of the secret project, the government tried to eliminate him. The former Immortal Operative has spent the majority of his life on the run and off the grid from the very government who’d helped him be ‘all he could be’. When the sassy, headstrong woman who makes his body burn with need vanishes, he realizes it’s not his head, but rather his heart that is broken. And he’ll do whatever is called for to mend it.

My Story Review : 2.5 out of 5 stars. I found this novella hard to read through. Not that the plot wasn't good or anything like that, but I found the scenes in the beginning that were just of Casey to be very slow and it just didn't capture my interest as I had hoped it would.

"Determined Prince" [Taming the Alpha Anthology, Novella 4] & [Captured by a Dragon-Shifter Series, Book 1] by Michelle M. Pillow (aka Madelyn Porter, Naomi Kalling, & Natasha Logan)

Author's Story Description : A Dragon Lords Romance

Dragonshifter Prince Kyran has studied the Earth people and is ready to assimilate. Female shifters are all but going extinct on his planet of Qurilixen, and his people are desperate for mates—so much so they’re taking matters into their own hands. What better place to capture a woman than Earth? After all, dragonshifters had come from there centuries ago. Surely a human female would be honored to be selected by one as fine and fierce as himself?

While on Earth, Kyran stumbles upon the most beautiful woman he’s ever imagined, singing something the natives call rock ’n’ roll. His blood simmers and he knows Eve is the one for him. But taming this feisty female is going to take much more than his training prepared him for.

Author's Series Description : Captured by a Dragon-Shifter is a modern day prequel series installment to those first books. They take place long before the princes you know and love ever found their mates, long before "The Dragon’s Queen," in a time when the dragonshifters and catshifters actually—wait for it—liked each other and hung out as friends. They also don’t have Galaxy Brides to bring them women. What they do have is the old portal that they used to escape Earth. There’s no one left to marry on the planet and things are starting to get desperate.

Rating: Contains graphic sexual content, adult language, and violence.

My Story Review : DNF. I wanted to like this novel, I really did but I just couldn't deal with how it flows. One minute you’re made to believe that they weren't just going to capture their brides, and the next (because of miscommunications) that is exactly what they were doing. Plus, I never had a moment where I could say, "I liked this character," as both Kyran and Eve were a little too self-absorbed. Therefore, once I got to about 50% of the way through I gave up on this one.

My Story Review : 4 out of 5 stars! A young lady who pushes the boundaries of propriety becomes enchanted to a man, who isn't what he seems.

This fast-paced novella is very fun and flirty! Henrietta (Hattie) is vivacious and daring, who brings Jean out from his dreary state and changes her life into something of her choosing. I really liked them together as they complemented each other so well. Plus, I liked reading their banter.

Story Teaser :
She wrinkled her button nose and snorted. "Why did you invite me here tonight?"
"Why did you come?" he returned.
Her eyes raked over him. "Because you interest me. I haven't met a man like you before."
He took another sip of brandy. "Well, then, that is why I invited you."
"You haven't met a man like me?" she shot back instantly.
"Clever," Jean said. ~ within Chapter 6

"Falling for the Firefighter" [Taming the Alpha Anthology, Novella 7] & [Hot Zone Anthology] by Shelli Stevens

Author's Story Description : When her cousin sets the kitchen on fire, Kim comes face to face with a man from her past. Despite the sparks that fly, she’s afraid to fall for the firefighter who might leave her burned.

My Story Review : 4 out of 5 stars! This intense novella is about two people meeting up again after their previous encounter pulled them apart.

I thoroughly enjoyed the buildup of this novel. It’s intense, charming, and pretty captivating as you reading about Kim & Lucas' growing relationship. I liked their whirlwind romance! I just wish that the ending wasn't so abrupt even though it, thankfully, does give you an update on how their relationship is doing.

"Cougar’s First Christmas" [Taming the Alpha Anthology, Novella 8] & [Cascade Shifters Series, Book 1.5] by Jessie Donovan

Author's Story Description : Willing to chance arrest and jail time, cougar-shifter Sean Fisher wants to make human Lauren Spencer his mate and Christmas is the perfect time to do it. However, on the way to obtain her parents’ approval, a car runs them off the road. When Sean wakes up, he’s tied up and alone, at the mercy of an anti-shifter group.

Six months ago, Lauren never would’ve pictured herself with a cougar-shifter, but Sean was everything she hoped for and was willing to risk it all to be his mate. Yet when a staged car crash tears him from her side, Lauren must reach out to his clan–a clan she’s never met–for help before it’s too late.

Can Lauren and Sean be together for Christmas? Or, will their differences be too much to overcome and rip them apart?

My Story Review : 5 out of 5 stars!! After six months of being together Sean wants to officially claim Lauren as his mate and propose to her, even if that means going against the laws and figuratively putting targets on their back for the purist groups to attack them...

Sean and Lauren's connection is palpable in a way that make the reader want to read more about them! Both are feisty which made reading about what they go through to protect one another, and their relationship, an enjoyable experience. It definitely got me interested in this series! In addition, it also reminded me a bit of Ms. Ashley’s Shifters Unbound Series with the way the world knows about shifters, most don’t like them, and there are laws against them.

Author's Story Description : Burned out from his last assignment, DEA agent Tobias Slater has come home to Chicago a changed man. Disillusioned and uncertain about his future, the last thing he expects is to run into Kansas Fielding on his first night home.

Kansas has loved Tobias for years. They shared one memorable kiss two years ago before he walked away. Now he’s back, and this time she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make him admit his feelings for her.

My Story Review : 4.5 out of 5 stars! An intensely driving novella about a man coming home after being away for quite some time, trying to get over the disturbing experiences that recently happened in his life, and reuniting with the one woman he could never get over.

In truth the story description made me not interested in this novella, but because I'm a fan of Ms. Walters I gave it a try and I'm so happy I did! Kansas and Tobias are a great match up! Reading about them reunite was very heartening and I could not get enough. I just wish there was an epilogue so I could see where they went from here.

My Story Review : 5 out of 5 stars! After years of heartache of her past Alex’s men—Cash and Rusty—come back into her life to set things right.

I’m a fan of MFM romances but only when all three get a HEA. This novel hits their HEA right out of the ballpark it’s so sweet, erotic, and entertaining! I loved how it updated the reader as to their past relationship with one another while bringing them all back together again. It was very sweet! Plus, it makes the reader really believe in Cash and Rusty as Alex’s “heroes” and gives you hope for their future.
