Disappointmentville: The Witch-Game Series, Book 1

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 973 KB | Expected Release Date: August 4, 2015 | Publisher: Clean Teen Publishing | Obtained: Clean Teen Publishing

"Crushed" [The Witch-Game Series, Book 1] by Kasi Blake (aka K. C. Blake)

Author's Book Description : The Noah girls have beauty, powers, and brains.

They use all three to play their games.

They blow the dust,

the boys are crushed,

and no one is ever the same.

Each year the Noah girls play a secret game— Crushed. The rules are simple.

1. Use wisdom to pick your target. The boy can’t be too weak or too strong-willed.

2. Blow the enchanted dust into your target’s face to enchant (Crush) him.

3. Give verbal commands and assign them tasks to perform throughout the year. The more tasks completed, the stronger the witch’s power grows.

4. At the end of the year, the witch with the most power wins cold, hard cash.

As if being a witch in high school isn’t complicated enough, Kristen picks the wrong boy to Crush. Zach is tall, handsome, and a little scary. Her Crush spell isn’t working on him like it has with the others. In fact, he is behaving the opposite of every other boy she’s Crushed, hating her instead of adoring her. Something is definitely wrong. After someone attempts to kill her, Kristen realizes there is more at risk than a few hundred dollars. She may be betting with her life.

My Book Review : 2 out of 5 stars. Going into her senior year of high school, Kristen is optimistic that this year will be great. However, from the first day things go from okay to terrible…
  • Her nemesis, Gina, calls her out in front of everyone.
  • Her sister bets her to “crush” Zach, one of the hottest/scariest boys in school, which leads to another rivalry unintended between her and her sister.
  • Now she has to deal with a Zach, who isn’t acting like a “crushed guy” should and instead of falling for her, he seems to hate her even more. Except for those rare occasions when he’s charming her…
From that day on life as Kristen knows it will never be the same. But will it be all for the best or will things just keep getting worse?

Wowza goes the drama! Suspenseful from beginning to end, this novel keeps its readers on their toes. It’s about witch/wizard families and what they’ll do for one another. While this dynamic cast is quiet entertaining, they also overload this novel with so much drama that if you don’t appreciate it then it’ll drag the readers down. That is actually what happened to me, it had too much drama for me to really like it. Nevertheless, Kristen, Zach, and their siblings create enough havoc in each other’s lives that if you are typically interested in dramatically suspenseful YA paranormal novels, that have a few romantic scenes included, then this might be more suited to you then me.

This wasn’t my type of novel. Yet, as I stated above this is for those who like suspenseful paranormal YA novels.

Author's Book Trailer :

Book Teaser(s) :
She wanted his jacket?
Zach blinked at her, completely thrown by her softly spoken command. She had obviously lost her mind. He didn’t like anyone touching his jacket, let alone wearing it. It had been the last gift his mother had given him before she’d died. Kristen Noah could pry it out of his cold, lifeless fingers if she wanted it. He certainly wasn’t handing it over to her like a lovesick idiot.
He’d planned to play along with her silly game, but now he didn’t think he could. He wasn’t going to pretend to date her. She was taking things too far. If she continued to push, he was going to push back. ~ within Chapter 3 - titled 'VENGEFUL'

Zach picked up the two champagne flutes, handed one to her, and lifted the other to make a toast. “To us.”
She sniffed the golden, bubbly contents.
“It’s non-alcoholic champagne,” he said with a wry smile. “What can I say? I’m a wild man.”
She giggled. ~ within Chapter 17 - titled 'BREATHLESS'

A Q&A with a character from "Crushed" :

Welcome to Dish with Maxie. Today, I am interviewing Sol Moreno High student Kristen Noah. I don’t usually invite teenagers onto my show, but Kristen has a juicy secret. Don’t change that channel. You won’t want to miss a second of this.

Maxie : Kristen, is it true you’re a witch?
Kristen : I... what? Who told you that? Was it my sister? Was it Brittany? Cause she makes up stories all the time, so you can’t believe anything she says.

Maxie : Okay, let’s talk about your sisters then. Tell us about them. You’re a triplet, right?
Kristen : Yes. There are three of us. Brittany is always in trouble, and Cyndi is always trying to fix it.

Maxie : Isn’t it true that Cyndi uses magic to fix things? Aren’t all three of you witches?
Kristen : Don’t be silly. There’s no such thing as witches.

Maxie : Not what I heard. In fact, a little bird told me they saw you and Brittany fighting at school. Weird things were happening like stuff flying through the air, shattered windshields in the parking lot, and people popping out of sight. How do you explain that?
Kristen : Overactive imaginations.

Maxie : Tell me about your new boyfriend. Zach, is it?
Kristen : Zach has a bad reputation, but he’s always there when I need him.

Maxie : Is it true you needed him when a building collapsed on you? Did he teleport you out of there?
Kristen :What? Where are you getting this information?

Maxie : Is it true Zach has dark powers and can change into an animal?
Kristen : No! (rips off microphone) This interview is over.

Maxie : (with a smile) Are there witches in Sol Moreno? You be the judge.

Okay, some people call it a lie, but she didn't see anything wrong with using every skill available to her to avoid being grounded. Over the years, that didn't change. Her stories just grew more elaborate. When she was 12, she began to write them down, starting with a six-page tale about a boy from the wrong side of the tracks and the good girl that secretly wanted him. Kasi went on to write for Harlequin for a few years. Then, she published a vampire series on her own, and now she is publishing with Clean Teen.

"For the Memory of Dragons" [The Dragons of Eternity Series, Book 2] by Julie Wetzel

Author's Book Description : What do you do when a dragon crash-lands in your backyard?

That’s the question Terra’s faced with when one of these creatures plows down into her cornfield. Should she help out the hunk of a man the dragon turns into, or turn him over to the trigger-happy ‘authorities’ that have come looking for him? The deciding factor—he has no memory. Giving him up just doesn’t seem right… at least until she knows the truth of who he is.

Alex has forgotten a thing or two—his name being one of them—but he knows there is something important that he needs to remember, if he could just get his battered brain to work properly. A little rest might help, but there’s no time for that when the bullets start flying.

Now, he has to follow the few clues he has to discover who he is, and why people are trying to kill him. But that’s the easy part. The hard part will be keeping his hands off the lovely lady helping him.

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Terra’s life changes the day a giant blue dragon falls out of the sky into her cornfield and transforms into an unconscious hunk of a man. Not long after he wakes up they find themselves on the run for their lives, trying to find out who he is since he lost his memory, and fighting the growing attraction between them. Yet, fate has plans for them both, neither are prepared but as they become close, they know they’ll protect one another by any means possible!

Expect the unexpected with this one! This unique modern day paranormal romance went in directions I wasn’t prepared for but found I was VERY happy with the result! Like Terra, I liked Alexander (Alex) a bit more when he didn’t have his memories, as he seemed more approachable. However, the attraction and growing chemistry between Alex and Terra was undeniable. Their story is fun and entertaining; I just could not get enough! Add in the shocking twists and it made me want to read more of their tale. Hopefully, these two will be in parts of the series as it continues. *crossing fingers*

I HIGHLY recommend this novel to those looking for a fun fast-paced paranormal romance! Also, just so you know, this novel can be read as a standalone. =0)

Book Excerpt :

Letting out a long breath, Alex turned his thoughts back to his phone and the man who had blown it up. Maybe Sanders did have cause to worry, but did he have to disturb everyone in his search for Alex? Brigs had mentioned that the man had blown up everyone’s phones looking for his missing man. Alex held his finger over the call log, ready to return the worried man’s call, but a growl from his dragon stopped him from placing it. Sanders’ worry was way out of proportion for the situation. That didn’t sit right with Alex. Shifting his finger down, Alex called the number that appeared in the call log only once.
“Hello.” Daniel’s voice rolled out of the phone.
“I need to talk with you,” Alex said, getting straight to the point.
There was a long pause before Daniel answered him. “Is everything all right, Alex?”
“No,” Alex answered. “There is something seriously wrong, and I need to speak with you, alone, as soon as possible.”
Daniel let another pregnant pause hold the space between them. “All right. Will you be coming here?”
Alex thought about it for a moment as he listened to his dragon. “No,” he said softly. His dragon did not like the idea of going into the main office. Something about that idea raised the hackles on the back of his neck. It was also a fair distance, even by wing, and that would leave Terra unprotected for too long. He didn’t like leaving her at all, but he needed to get this taken care of. “Can you meet me at The Dragon’s Wing?”
“Give me thirty minutes,” Daniel answered and hung up.

Entangled TEEN Balloon Pop Booth at Entangled Publishing's Summer Carnival | Blog Tour, Guest Post, Spreading the Word & Multiple Giveaways

Welcome to the Entangled TEEN Balloon Pop Booth! Entangled TEEN is all about the excitement of first love, so we are talking about all of the reasons a summer carnival makes a good date! Pintip Dunn, Vivi Barnes, Heidi R. Kling, and Gloria Craw are here to share their reasons and we would love to hear some of your carnival date stories. Then check out books by those lovely ladies and a few more! ALSO, be sure to leave a comment and don’t forget to enter the giveaway below! [Blog Tour & Giveaway will run from August 1 – 14, 2016]

First Dates, Summer Love, and Carnival Rides Featuring Pintip Dunn, Vivi Barnes, Heidi R. Kling, and Gloria Craw

Pintip Dunn :
OMG, I think one of my first dates ever was at a summer carnival! Why does it make a good date? Because it is fun, thrilling, playful, giddy, and romantic! You get to be a kid again as you scream on rides that smash you up against your date. Feel that rush of excitement when your hoop lands on the bottle and you win a gigantic stuffed animal. Taste the sticky sweetness of cotton candy on your date's lips. Best of all, you form memories that you still remember fondly 20 years later!

Vivi Barnes :
No other date can measure up to the excitement and… opportunities…of a carnival. Where else can you legitimately be smashed up against the cute guy without having to apologize for being in his space? Or be lifted a couple hundred feet in the air for a few peaceful minutes of conversation with zero possibilities of someone butting in? Or be given the opportunity to win a huge stuffed monkey that you know you must have, whether or not you really do. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll receive that special kiss you’ll remember far longer than that ugly orange monkey.

Heidi R. Kling :
Hot. Summer, Night. Well, that's enough right there for romance to spark, but add some sticky cotton candy, popcorn, rides that push you into your partner instead of further apart, and if you're lucky? A moonlit kiss on a Ferris Wheel. Only thing missing from Paige and Jake's summer in Jackson Hole was the town carnival. Why didn't I think of that? Maybe in the sequel.

Gloria Craw :
Carnivals are all about roller-coasters, so we can get some quality handholding-time in as we scream on the way down. Our guy might show off his man-skills and win a stuffed animal, and the food can be amazing. The best thing about a carnival date, though, is we’re going to get windblown hair, he might choose the scary, stuffed clown prize, and there’s a chance someone will spill Slurpee on their jeans. I think when the fun gets chaotic, we let our guard down and that’s when we really get to know someone.

"Paper or Plastic"
by Vivi Barnes

Author's Book Description :
Welcome to SmartMart, where crime pays minimum wage...

Busted. Alexis Dubois just got caught shoplifting a cheap tube of lipstick at the local SmartMart. She doesn’t know what’s worse—disappointing her overbearing beauty-pageant-obsessed mother for the zillionth time...or her punishment. Because Lex is forced to spend her summer working at the store, where the only things stranger than the staff are the customers.

Now Lex is stuck in the bizarro world of big-box retail. Coupon cutters, jerk customers, and learning exactly what a “Code B” really is (ew). And for added awkwardness, her new supervisor is the totally cute—and adorably geeky—Noah Grayson. Trying to balance her out-of-control mother, her pitching position on the softball team, and her secret crush on the school geek makes for one crazy summer. But ultimately, could the worst job in the world be the best thing that ever happened to her?

My Book Review :
4 out of 5 stars! A girl tries to steal lipstick from SmartMart and is caught. As punishment, as well as to teach her responsibility, her mother gets the manager to hire her for the summer, much to her dismay. Overtime she finds that SmartMart is better than she perceived, most of the employees are really nice, and there is one hot assistant manager who is more than nice in getting to know. Yet, with life at home getting more difficult and the hot assistant manager actually being her best friend’s enemy will she be able to follow her instincts/her heart or will her fears about what everyone thinks get in the way?

Even though at times I wish Alexis (Lex/Lexus) was more forthright to her friends and Noah, I liked how this novel progressed from Lex being snobby to her putting effort into getting to know all her employees to her overcoming her previous misgivings. [READ MY FULL REVIEW & TWO EXTRA TEASERS]

Author's Book Description :
On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.

"Live and Let Psi"
[Psi Fighter Academy Series, Book 2] by D. R. Rosensteel

Author's Book Description :
She’d rather kick butt than fall in love.

Rinnie Noelle would rather kick some creepy villain butt than go on a date. As a Psi Fighter trained in the Mental Arts, she can’t be distracted by emotion. Her nemesis, Nicolaitin, is manipulating students from her school, using them as puppets to carry out his new plan to find the infamous Morgan Girl, and he doesn’t care who becomes collateral damage in the process. People’s lives are depending on Rinnie’s ultimate focus.

But Mason Draudimon keeps slicing into her soul sharper than a Thought Saber, and her feelings for him knock her off her game with the strength of a psionic War Hammer. Mason insists on helping Rinnie take down Nicolaitan for his own reasons—to avenge his mother—and the closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous the dance between mind and heart, life and death, logic and love.

About the Authors :

When Pintip Dunn first-grade teacher asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, she replied, “An author.” Although she has pursued other interests over the years, this dream has never wavered. Pintip graduated from Harvard University, magna cum laude, with an A.B. in English Literature and Language. She received her J.D. at Yale Law School, where she was an editor of the YALE LAW JOURNAL.
Pintip is represented by literary agent Beth Miller of Writers House. She is a 2012 RWA Golden Heart® finalist and a 2014 double-finalist. She lives with her husband and children in Maryland.

Vivi Barnes was raised on a farm in East Texas where her theater-loving mom and cowboy dad gave her a unique perspective on life. Now living in the magic and sunshine of Orlando, Florida, she divides her time writing, working, goofing off with her husband and three kids, and avoiding dirty dishes.

Heidi R. Kling writes about normal girls in fantastic situations. "PAINT MY BODY RED," a romantic thriller about a girl fleeing secrets from home launches November 2 with EntangledTeen, followed by several more novels on various Entangled imprints. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the New School, but has been writing books, plays and screenplays since she could practically hold a pencil.

Gloria Craw grew up in the desert southwest, inspired everyday by the wide skies and rich colors around me. Gloria attended the University of Utah where she majored and got a degree in anthropology. These days, she lives in the burbs just outside of Seattle, Washington. She's married and has four daughters. When she's not running them to volleyball or swimming, you'll find her reading, writing or fangirling over some TV show.

Mother, wife, and YA author living on a windy hill in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Leah Rae Miller loves fuzzy socks, comic books, cherry coke, and brand new office supplies. Her first novel in her Nerd Series titled "THE SUMMER I BECAME A NERD" came out Summer 2013 from Entangled Teen, and the second novel in the series came out Spring 2016. Stay cool!

D. R. Rosensteel writes clean YA fantasy action-adventure stories wrapped around real teen issues like bullying, drug abuse, and peer pressure. There may be a hint of romance or a touch of horror, but there will always be action, action action!

His message to kids who feel different—stick together. We have the rest of the world outnumbered.

His message to parents—pay attention. The evils of bullying, drug abuse, and peer pressure are real, and our kids don’t always talk about it. Don’t be a helicopter, but never be afraid to be a parent. Our kids need our guidance and our love. It’s great that they have friends who have their backs, but it’s better that they know you do.

His message to Psi Fighters—Vanquish Evil, Do Right, Protect the Innocent!
