"When In Texas" [Blame it on Texas Series] by Lynda Simmons
Author's Book Description : Jenna Scott loves the open road, solo camping and feeding people. A self-taught chef and lifelong vegetarian, she can’t wait to open her first restaurant and prove that you can make friends with salad. But in Clifton Texas?
Rancher and retailer, Alex Barclay, knows Texans live for steak and brisket. But kale and quinoa? Not so much. While the vegetarian is about as cute as a woman can get, she’s also more than naïve about her business prospects in Clifton. But she has the right to fail anywhere she likes.
The town’s elder statesman disagrees. As far as he’s concerned, Jenna is the next natural disaster to hit cattle country. An insult to ranchers and a menace to the Texas economy.
When he takes a hard line against Jenna, refusing to rent her the space they agreed upon, Jenna is left with spoiling supplies, broken dreams and nowhere to go. Alex’s sense of fair play won’t let him stand back and do nothing. His brother runs a café inside Alex’s store, a space which will be empty for two more weeks until his brother gets back from France. Knowing it will turn a lot of folks against him, Alex offers to let Jenna open a pop-up restaurant in the café anyway. Two weeks to prove that statesman wrong. To show the town that kale and quinoa can indeed live happily ever after with steak and brisket.
Jenna can either accept Alex’s help or get back in her camper and drive, letting that narrow-minded statesman win. A pop-up isn’t what she planned, but Jenna has never been the type to back down from a fight. And for the first time since she can remember, the open road is not as appealing as the cowboy who wants her to stay.
* The Blame it on Texas Series is a Kindle Worlds series based in the universe of Carolyn Brown's "Long, Hot Texas Summer" and "Daisies in the Canyon."
My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars, throughout Jenna’s life she has always been living on the road in some aspect or another. The one town she feels most at peace has always been Clifton, Texas. So, when she comes up with the money and fortitude to start the restaurant she has always dreamed about, having it be located in Clifton seems like the best choice. The “problem” is that Jenna’s dream restaurant have strictly vegetarian and vegan meals that she’s bringing to “cattle country,” so what she didn’t count on were the locals picketing against her or having a local cowboy who might become the hero she never realized she needed.
This is a quick read that has enough spunk, hilarity, and sweetness that you’ll be smiling the whole way through. In addition, all I could think of saying when it was finished was, “Awwwww,” because it was just that sweet.
Truly, though, like Jenna I am half in love with Alex already. And their instant intense chemistry is one that I hooked me from their first meeting in front of that “Taco stand.” What kept me was Jenna’s convictions in her business; and how Alex steps up to help her out no matter the costs to his own businesses. I was charmed!
My only wish is that it was longer and/or it dug into more about Jenna and Alex’s relationship. Yet I would definitely recommend this novel to those looking for a quick contemporary romance to read!

Book Teaser(s) :
“You like her, don’t you,” Alex said, surprising himself as much as Jackson.
Jackson stopped. Looked over at Jenna in the kitchen then moved closer to Alex. “Are you asking out of curiosity, or something else?”
“Curiosity.”
Alex heard her say, “Where are the damn keys?” and glanced over. Watched her fishing around in a huge bag for those keys; pleased that a couple more people were making their way to the smoothie bar and wishing he knew how to make them.
He turned back to Jackson. “So I’ll ask again. Do you like her.”
“Yes, I do. Although I’m not sure why that’s any of your business.”
“It’s not.” Alex lowered his voice as Jenna approached. “But if you break that woman’s heart, I may change my mind.” ~ within Chapter 4
