"A Shift in the Water" [Elemental Shifter Series, Book 1] by Patricia D. Eddy

Author's Book Description : Can a werewolf lose his humanity?

Alpha wolf Cade can’t remember walking on two legs, talking, or even his own name. His pack gone, trapped in wolf form by an elemental’s spell, he has one chance at freedom: the beautiful, sad woman crying on an Orcas Island beach.

Dying from an unknown illness, Mara is saying goodbye to her favorite vacation spot when she finds a reason to fight off death a little longer—an injured wolf hiding in the trunk of her car. This animal needs her, and she’ll stay alive as long as she can to nurse him back to health.

Mara’s illness worsens, and after she passes out, she wakes with a naked man in her bed. Now she must face facts. Werewolves are real, she has magical abilities, and she just might have found her mate.

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! A woman, who's at the brink of dying, because she is unaware of her elemental water powers, rescues a malnourished wolf (or so she thought) which she later finds is a werewolf. Their bond grows quickly. Yet when those from their pasts come after them, will they be able to fight for one another or will they let everything rip them apart?

This gripping tale kept me excited from page one. From the backstory build-up to the unique cast of characters, I was enjoying this novel a lot while getting excited as to how this novel sets its series up around it. I cannot wait to see where Cade's pack will take me next.

Truth be told, though I loved Cade and Mara's romance and how their relationship evolved, it was truly Mara who made this novel for me. And please do not take that lightly, as usually I am more of a fan of the heroes and/or the main couple as a duo above all. Mara just blew me away with everything that she handled. In some ways, it makes me disappointed that this is a standalone series, as I'd really appreciate more from/of Mara. What can I say other than Mara rules! But even so, I thoroughly enjoyed how Cade and Mara came together and stuck through some death-defying things, all in the name of love. It was quite the paranormal soap opera.

I recommend this novel to those looking for an intense, nail-biting, unique paranormal romance.

Author's Novel Extras :

Book Teaser(s) :
What the hell happened? I'm either completely insane or . . . well, no. I'm completely insane. Am I even still here? Maybe I'm in the hospital in a coma and this is all some drugged dream. Maybe I died and the afterlife is some crazy psycho trip. ~ within Chapter 7
"Why are you doing all this for me?"
"Because the wolf saved my life." She turned in her seat, giving him her full attention. "Because when I was on Orcas that last night, I prayed. I asked whatever deity is up there for one thing: Please let my life matter. That's all I wanted. I wanted to have mattered. This is a way to do that. I don't care what you say I smell like. I'm still dying and anything I can do before the end to make a difference to anyone is important to me."
Cade reached for her so suddenly, she didn't have time to pull away. He held her against his chest, his face in her hair. "You matter, honey. You matter to me." ~ within Chapter 10
