My Q&A with Marie Astor :

Jess : What books did you enjoy reading while growing up?

Marie : "The Hobbit" by J. R. R. Tolkien and "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" by C. S. Lewis were my favorite books while growing up and are still among my favorites – there is just something magical about these books and I reread them every holiday season. I also loved The Pippi Longstocking series and Karlsson-on-the-Roof series by Astrid Lindgren.

Jess : What sparked the idea for your most recent novel, "On the Rim of Love?"

Marie : I think that there is something unique to the atmosphere of ski towns and tightly-knit communities that inhabit them, which is why I chose a ski town as the setting for "On the Rim of Love." Skiing is one of my favorite pastimes (when I get a chance to do it!) and I always have to have a love story in my book, so I thought that it would be an exciting concept to combine the two concepts.

Jess : Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Marie : Definitely Taylor Denton – when I was writing his character, I had a major crush on him!

Jess : If you had to describe Maggie & Taylor (from "On the Rim of Love") in one word, what would it be?

Marie : Enamored

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Marie : I have written three books so far: "Lucky Charm" – a humorous contemporary romance about love, luck and friendship, "On the Rim of Love" – a contemporary romance about the unexpected power of love and a collection of short stories about love and everyday life: "A Chance Encounter and Other Stories."

I can’t really say that I have favorites – each book is unique to me because of the characters and plot lines that I’ve created and I hope that readers will enjoy reading them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Marie : I am currently working on my next contemporary romance - it is a love story (of course!) about letting go of one’s inhibitions, finding true love and learning to tango. The main character, Claire, is an architect who is engaged to marry her real estate magnate fiancé, but when a handsome tango instructor moves into the apartment above hers, Claire begins to question her seemingly perfect life.

The release date is scheduled for March of 2012 – please visit my website, www.marieastor.com to join my distribution list if you would like to receive updates.

Jess : What book are you reading now? How do you like it so far?

Marie : I just finished reading "The Peach Keeper" by Sarah Addison Allen and I absolutely loved it.

"Smitten at First Sight" by Marie Astor
(Originally published as "On the Rim of Love," which is what it was called when this reviewer read it and interviewed Ms. Astor about it.)

My Book Summary : Maggie's life seems to be on course, at least to where everyone else in her life thinks it should be, she just graduated college, recently she got engaged to her long-time boyfriend, and her mother is encouraging her to go to law school. Now she is off on an engagement trip to Vancouver, to ski and spend time with her friends and Jeffery (her fiancé) or so she thinks. However, soon Jeffery informs her that the trip is more for his work then their engagement and he'll be a little tied up because of it.

During their trip Maggie sees a side of Jeffery that she really doesn't like, she falls in love with the area they are visiting, and she meets Taylor--a man whom is the star of Jeffery's new movie while being sweet he's also a wonderful and adventurous skier. Soon Maggie comes to a crossroads about what she wants to do with her life and who she wants in it, but what will she decide and who will she choose??

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This novel is about finding out who you really want to be and following through with your dreams. It is a fun novel with great descriptions of the mountains and landscape. In addition, it shows the wonders that Maggie sees and feels while skiing.

I couldn't help but automatically like Taylor and the relationship/friendship that slowly grows between Maggie and him. Their connection just flies off the page and you just want to root for them!!

About the Characters:
• Maggie: Throughout this book, she grows from a girl who is content with everyone around her choosing things for her into a woman who sticks up for what she wants and believes in.

• Taylor: Someone who knows what he wants. Stands by his family and friends no matter what.

• Jeffery: Arrogant prick. (I just wanted to smack him sometimes.)

• Charlie: Jeffery's childhood friend. He seems sweet.

• Bethany: Maggie's childhood friend. Snobbish. I think she means well in her own weird way.

• Shawn & Hannah: Taylor's childhood friends. They both have problems with unrequited love.

Even with all of the good stuff this novel has I will admit to not liking a part here and there (mostly Jeffery's scenes). However, the last few chapters really bring everything together and make this into one enjoyable novel!

I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a good contemporary romance!! =0)

Book Teaser(s) :
Teaser #1
“Wow – this is a great shot,” Taylor said at length as he stared at the still shot of himself flying down an almost vertical incline – by the looks of it, it was taken on the Heaven Ridge.
Maggie blushed and Taylor could guess that she had not intended for him to see this shot. “I took it on my second day here – I was up on the lift and then I saw you fly down the mountain and I just had to take that photo. I didn’t know it were you at the time – please don’t think that I’m a stalker or anything like that.”
“Why would I think that?” He shrugged, amused by her embarrassment. ~ within Chapter 16

Book Excerpt :

The bulletin board was filled with countless notices and announcements, but the one that drew Maggie’s attention was a picture of a skier flying down an endless expanse of snow. Taylor Denton having another great day on the mountain, said the caption next to the picture. Maggie stared at the photo, as though she were frozen still. The skier in the photo was wearing helmet and goggles, but the same confident grin shone on his face, the same golden ponytail flew down his shoulders, and the same neon jacket covered his back.

Now, she had a name to connect with the face, and, suddenly, Maggie realized the true reason why she had been so nervous about coming to the Owl Lodge.

“I’m Taylor, Taylor Denton.” The younger man stepped forward without waiting for Jeffrey’s introduction.

I already know that, Maggie thought. For a moment, she was rendered speechless as her gaze remained glued to the dazzling green of Taylor’s eyes: there was something in his open, fearless gaze that unnerved her. “Very nice to meet you, Taylor,” Maggie struggled to keep her voice leveled as she shook Taylor’s hand – his hand was warm, and his grip had just the right amount of pressure. He held her hand in his for a moment longer than necessary, or it might have been just her imagination, but the electrifying sensation she felt at the touch of Taylor’s hand filled her with guilt anyway: her fiancé was standing right there, and she had no business having these kinds of thoughts about some daredevil skier she had just met.

Made the Grade: The Paladin Warrior Series, Book 1

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 323; Kindle Edition - File Size: 594 KB | Expected Release Date: February 01, 2012 | Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca | Obtained: NetGalley

"Deliver Me from Darkness" [The Paladin Warrior Series, Book 1] by Tes Hilaire

My Book Summary : At one time Roland was a Paladin---one of the Light, a protector against all that is evil---until Christos (an evil Master vampire) turned him and slaughtered Roland's family. Now he is a vampire who does his best to be good even though it's harder then hell sometimes for him to do so.

Just when he thinks, he has his "new" life all planned out for himself Karissa lands on his doorstep. She is Light in and of itself, the prettiest woman he's ever seen, minus her ratty outfit. However, he's not the only one who wants her .... since she happens to be the last known female Paladin she is quite a commodity to those good and evil, and now it's up to Roland to do everything in his power to protect her ... and possibly keep her.

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars!! This novel/series is an interesting mix of mystery, romance, and the supernatural. I could not get enough!! The multiple plots that are within this novel seem to start off a great foundation for what this series could turn into and I am definitely excited as to where Tes will take it next.

There were some parts in this novel that did drag on a bit for me. However, I really enjoyed reading about the Paladins and their ways (even if their ways need revamping), and I'm curious as to see what will change within their organization because of what happens at the end of this novel. =0)

For the characters ... I really liked the relationship and chemistry between Roland and Karissa. They made quite a pair and I hope they'll be in the future novels so I can see how their relationship grows. Nevertheless, my favorite character in this novel was Gabriella!!! I loved finding out her background information and why she does some of the things she does. I really hope that she'll be the main character in the next book in this series!! ♥

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good vs evil plots with a hot lot of hot guys and some spicy sex scenes thrown in. =0)

Book Teaser(s) :
As disguises went, this one worked as well as any. Maybe better, given the genes she'd inherited from Mommy Dearest. May she rot in hell. ~ within Chapter 10
"As you know, I am not a full Paladin any longer."
What? Not a Paladin? Karissa lifted her gaze. Roland was leaning over the sink, carefully dabbing the blood off a cut on his forearm that had already healed. Oh, right. Honestly, she'd momentarily forgotten about the whole vampire thing. ~ within Chapter 15

Feasted On: The Circle Eight Series, Book 1

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 254; Kindle Edition - File Size: 534 KB | Expected Release Date: January 31, 2012 | Publisher: Brava Books | Obtained: Emma Lang (The author mailed it to me.)

"Matthew" [The Circle Eight Series, Book 1] by Emma Lang (aka Beth Williamson)

My Book Summary : Who knew you could find your soul mate in the most unlikely circumstances...

Matthew's family has just had deal with one turmoil after another. First his parents get murdered and his youngest brother disappeared (stolen or dead he isn't sure), then when he goes to Houston to follow through with his family's land grant he finds that the only way to get the grant is to be married. Therefore, after telling the person dealing with the grant that he was married to a woman named Hannah, he now has a month to find a girl named Hannah and marry her so the grant will be approved.

As luck would have it a week later Matthew finds a voluptuous looking girl named Hannah to marry, who he also gets along with better than he ever expected. Nevertheless, not everyone in his family is happy to have her joining their family, making the tension at the ranch sometimes hard to deal with.

Then there is the mystery about what happened to Matthew's parents and brother. Who would do that to them? Why was it done? Where is his little brother? In addition, when they might finally have a lead with someone to help them in finding their brother, Hannah's life gets threatened. Will Matthew, Hannah, and his family give up the search just because someone might be out to get the rest of them? Or will they finally come together as a family and stick up for what is theirs?

My Book Review : 4.5 out of 5 stars ... this novel is about a family of ranchers who try to make the best out of some awful situations that happen to them. A compelling, sweet, and spicy novel gets you to fall head over heels for this family! They are such great characters! I'm very excited to see where this series will go and how the characters will grow.

In addition, I hope when they do find Benjy (since I think they will find him), he'll be living in a decent situation and not emotionally scarred. But we'll have to follow this series along to find out.

This was my first novel that I've read of Emma Lang's but if they are all like this one than she has just made another fan!!

If recommend this to anyone who really likes historical romance and/or spicy mystery novels!!

Book Teaser(s) :
Caleb frowned at him and Catherine kicked him in the shin.
"Ow, why are you kicking me?" He rubbed his leg and scowled at his youngest sister.
"You let Granny and Hannah eat in the kitchen. That's not very nice." She crossed her little arms like a forty-year-old school teacher.
"Heck, Matt, we could have taken turns." Caleb joined the blame party.
"I didn't tell them to eat in the kitchen."
"She's your wife. You tell her where she eats." ~ within Chapter 5
Matt wanted to throttle his wife at the same time he wanted to kiss her. Hannah had suddenly found her voice, along with a healthy dose of sass, and she seemed to be out of control. ~ within Chapter 10

"Waiting On" Wednesday: In Honor

  • Today's "Waiting On" Wednesday by Jill - click here

  • "In Honor" by Jessi Kirby
Expected Publication Released Date: May 8, 2012

    Author's Book Description:
A devastating loss leads to an unexpected road trip in what Sarah Ockler calls a “beautiful, engaging journey with heart, humor, and just a pinch of Texas sass.”

Three days after learning of her brother Finn’s death, Honor receives his last letter from Iraq. Devastated, she interprets his note as a final request and spontaneously sets off to California to fulfill it. At the last minute, she’s joined by Rusty, Finn’s former best friend.

Rusty is the last person Honor wants to be with—he’s cocky and obnoxious, just like Honor remembers, and she hasn’t forgiven him for turning his back on Finn when he enlisted. But as they cover the dusty miles together in Finn’s beloved 1967 Chevy Impala, long-held resentments begin to fade, and Honor and Rusty struggle to come to terms with the loss they share.

As their memories of Finn merge to create a new portrait, Honor’s eyes are opened to a side of her brother she never knew—a side that shows her the true meaning of love and sacrifice.

“Yes, he is.” Maggie nodded curtly – this was indeed going too far.

Feasted On: Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally

    Format: Paperback | Pages: 281 | Release Date: December 1, 2011 | Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire | Obtained: Amazon.com

    "Catching Jordan" by Miranda Kenneally

My Book Summary : Jordan is the captain of her football team as well as their star quarterback. However, everything she has worked years to become and everything else in her life seems to change once Tyler (Ty) moves to town and starts at her school. Nevertheless, not only does he seem to be a great quarterback himself he might be looking into taking over her spot. In addition, even though she's around hot guys all the time on her team, he is the first guy to ever catch her interest and that could totally throw off her game. So, will she be able to keep her head in the football game and make her team proud without losing her heart in the process??

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars!! I think I half fell in love with this novel ever since I read it's description! How could anyone, not like reading about a girl who is more tomboy than anything yet still cute that has a football team full of guy friends and is still coming into her own woman. I could not get enough of this book! Jordan's friends are great and their easy banter was very enjoyable!

    About the Characters:
    • Jordan: A strong, tough, leader. Knows what she wants and plans to do anything to get it. Has never had a boyfriend before.

    • Ty: He's a Texan who just moved to Tennessee. Sounds like a great guy, yet he's held back by his need to control everything.

    • Henry: Jordan's best friend. A hot football player, who Jordan refers to having a harem of girls that are always after him.

    • Carter: Has more plans for himself than what his father wants for him. Jordan's "shy" friend.

    • JJ: One hell of a friend. Jordan's "protector."

    • Jake: One hot player, at least he likes to think he is. =0)

    • Mike: Jordan's older brother and her biggest supporter.

This is a wonderful story about the lengths friends and things in the name of friendship will do, as well as sweet a love story. I recommend it to anyone who likes reading about strong female lead characters, especially in a YA novel.

"Seems like he likes you. Don't you want to date a first-rounder?"
"Excuse me while I go vomit."
"So you're not interested in him?" Ty asks, smiling.
"Hells no. I'd rather date O. J. Simpson."
Ty laughs. "I'm glad to hear that...I think." ~ within the chapter titled 'nachos grande'

Made the Grade: Ditched: A Love Story by Robin Mellom

    - This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Hardcover - Pages: 273; Kindle Edition - File Size: 1401 KB | Expected Release Date: January 10, 2012 | Publisher: Hyperion Books | Obtained: NetGalley

"Ditched: A Love Story" by Robin Mellom

My Book Summary : Justina finds herself at 6:15 am, the day after her Senior Prom, sitting in a ditch on the side of the road. She pulls herself together and walks down the road with every intention of finding a way home. Quickly she comes across a 7-Eleven where she finds a convenience store clerk who seems sympathetic enough to listen to her story. Going through her story, the clerk helps her find out how her best friend, and prom date, could turn into Captain Scumbag when just before prom she was thinking about taking their friendship to the next level. Will everything finally make since once she talks through what happened or it be obvious why she became DITCHED!!

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars, it's a funny mystery through and through, about best friends who both want to be something more than friends but the night they plan on doing so they never seem to be on the same page. This novel has some of the same premise as "One Night That Changes Everything" by Lauren Barnholdt, but only in the aspect of something bad happened to Justina, she needs to find out what happened, and it has to do with her "boyfriend."

I really liked how this novel goes back and forth between Justina's previous events of what happened to get her into that ditch and her sitting at the 7-Eleven with the convenience store clerk and the other costumer. Very well written!! Plus ... the ending is just OHH soo good! =0) As well as the really cute epilogue!

However, I will admit that there were some parts that annoyed me and some parts that were a little slow but all in all this novel was enjoyable to read!

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed reading "One Night That Changes Everything," or to anyone who loves reading YA romance novels!! ♥

    Book Teaser(s) :
That damn green shirt. None of this would have happened if it weren't for that stupid color.
It's like a nightmare Sesame Street episode: This month's gut-wrenching, painful heartache brought to you by the color green!
But I quickly snap back to reality and remind myself that I am telling this story to the cashier at the 7-Eleven due to the fact that Ian Clark left me on prom night and I ended up in a ditch on Hollister Road.
Screw the color green. ~ within Chapter 1
