"School Spirits" [School Spirits Series, Book 1] by Rachel Hawkins

Author's Book Description : Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

Rachel Hawkins' delightful spin-off brings the same wit and charm as the New York Times best-selling Hex Hall series. Get ready for more magic, mystery and romance!

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! It's a sweet humorous suspenseful novel that has spurts of romance thrown in, gets you all warmed up for what looks to be a intriguing spin-off series!! Izzy is a softhearted protagonist who is still getting her footing in what her role is supposed to be within her family's lifestyle. Just recently losing her older sister, she feels responsible for the loss and tries to show her mother what a good "worker" she is by taking a ghost "case" on her own. Yet, as she has to pretend to be a "normal" teenager for her mission she gets involved in a lot of firsts. First kiss. First crush. First friends. During that time she comes to terms what it means following in her family's footsteps, what she might have to give up, and see if she can change her future for the better...

I really liked Torin!! And even though I liked Dex and Izzy together, I have hopes that something between Torin and Izzy will happen! =0)

I recommend this novel for those who are fans of the Hex Hall series, fans of Ms. Hawkins, and/or those who like YA paranormal novels with romance thrown in!

Book Teaser(s) :
That done, I tossed my phone on the bed and turned my attention to my closet.
"Whatever shall you wear?" Torin observed, propping his chin in his hand. "Let's see, there's the black T-shirt with black jeans. Or perhaps, it you're going for elegance over function, you could wear the black T-shirt with black jeans. Ooh!" He sat up, widening his eyes. "Do you know what would be particularly fetching? The black---"
"T-shirt with black jeans," I finished for him. "Hilarious."
But looking at my closet, he did have a point. Other than that pink hoodie, my closet was a sea of sameness. A sea of black. And I didn't have the faintest idea what girls wore to basketball games. ~ within Chapter 13
"So you were...dead."
"Romy," I warned, but she just shrugged and pulled the blanket tighter around her.
"Look, I get that he's traumatized, but hey, am I, too."
"We all are," Anderson muttered. ~ within Chapter 33

Made the Grade: Ditched: A Love Story by Robin Mellom

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Hardcover - Pages: 273; Kindle Edition - File Size: 1401 KB | Expected Release Date: January 10, 2012 | Publisher: Hyperion Books | Obtained: NetGalley

"Ditched: A Love Story" by Robin Mellom

My Book Summary : Justina finds herself at 6:15 am, the day after her Senior Prom, sitting in a ditch on the side of the road. She pulls herself together and walks down the road with every intention of finding a way home. Quickly she comes across a 7-Eleven where she finds a convenience store clerk who seems sympathetic enough to listen to her story. Going through her story, the clerk helps her find out how her best friend, and prom date, could turn into Captain Scumbag when just before prom she was thinking about taking their friendship to the next level. Will everything finally make since once she talks through what happened or it be obvious why she became DITCHED!!

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars, it's a funny mystery through and through, about best friends who both want to be something more than friends but the night they plan on doing so they never seem to be on the same page. This novel has some of the same premise as "One Night That Changes Everything" by Lauren Barnholdt, but only in the aspect of something bad happened to Justina, she needs to find out what happened, and it has to do with her "boyfriend."

I really liked how this novel goes back and forth between Justina's previous events of what happened to get her into that ditch and her sitting at the 7-Eleven with the convenience store clerk and the other costumer. Very well written!! Plus ... the ending is just OHH soo good! =0) As well as the really cute epilogue!

However, I will admit that there were some parts that annoyed me and some parts that were a little slow but all in all this novel was enjoyable to read!

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed reading "One Night That Changes Everything," or to anyone who loves reading YA romance novels!! ♥

Book Teaser(s) :
That damn green shirt. None of this would have happened if it weren't for that stupid color.
It's like a nightmare Sesame Street episode: This month's gut-wrenching, painful heartache brought to you by the color green!
But I quickly snap back to reality and remind myself that I am telling this story to the cashier at the 7-Eleven due to the fact that Ian Clark left me on prom night and I ended up in a ditch on Hollister Road.
Screw the color green. ~ within Chapter 1

Out of the darkness and into the sun. But I won't forget all the ones that I loved. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change ... and breakaway

Format: Hardcover | Pages: 323 | Release Date: March 2010 | Publisher: Hyperion Books

"Hex Hall" [Hex Hall Series, Book 1] by Rachel Hawkins -- When Sophie turned twelve, over three years ago, she turned full into her powers and became a witch. As happens to all prodigium ("just a fancy Latin word for monsters") around that age.

But recently she preformed another spell-gone-wrong at current school. Now it was one messed up spell too many, so her parents and the Council are having her move into Hecate Hall, a place that "rehabilitates" misbehaving adolescents or those who cannot control what they can do.

However, by the first day Sophie makes friends with the school outcast (also her roommate), enemies with the three most popular girls, and gets a crush on the "bad-boy" heartthrob. That's only the beginning .... along comes a pesky ghost, and then there are three organizations that are out to kill any prodigium people .... especially Sophie.

3.5 out of 5 stars. Great book! I loved the characters .... Jenna is AWESOME!!! Definitely I want to read the second book, "Demonglass", when it gets released!

This book also reminded me of the Evernight Series ... just a bit ... minus the whole main character being a vamp. *shrug*
