"Thrust of Fate" by Amy Crown

Author's Book Description : Arial thought she had a pretty normal life until news of her uncle's death thrusts four men into her life: a demon, an angel, a vampire and a werewolf. Now her previously non-existent love life is more than she can handle. How can she choose and does she have a choice?

- This story is intended to be enjoyed by an 18+ audience only.
- Standalone novel, no cliffhangers here!
- Please be aware that this is a romance short. Shorter fiction is a fun and quick read, not a full-length novel.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! After six years of being away, Arial comes home because she is told her Uncle (the man who raised her) has passed away. However, not long after arriving at the hotel she finds out that the destiny that her Uncle always alluded to over the years has finally arrived and now she’s forced accept the men (or choose between them) who come along with it. Yet, can she really choose between them when she really wants them all? Will the men be willing to “get along” for the sake of Arial? Or will she decide to take matters into her own hands to get exactly what she wants?

A dynamic plot, intriguing characters, with a fast-paced setting. I liked how Arial handles everything that came her way, even though she should have handled everything better that happens towards the end. While the relationship between Arial and her men (Emil, Damien, Gabriel, and Murin) is growing throughout this novella (and even afterwards) I enjoyed what I could of it and how they came together. Nevertheless, the whole “orb thing” and how it was supposed to, basically, “take away” her matings so she could accommodate them all was a little weird for me. It also annoyed me a bit because, even though she has instant feelings for them all, her own choice in the matter isn’t even taken into consideration.

With all that being said, though, I am very happy that I read this novella! It’s not as erotic as I had expected, yet still a fun paranormal romance. Then through it all, the way the plot builds on itself, made me want to read more about Arial and her men.

I do recommend this novella to those who are looking for a quick paranormal romance with a unique setting.

-- On a side note --
When reading a "multiple couple" romance I kind of like to read from as many, if not all, of the characters' POVs, but in this one it was only was Arial and Emil's POVs that you get to read from, which I found that a little disappointing.

Book Teaser(s) :
Before she even made it to the door in the blink of an eye the dark man with the red-rimmed eyes was standing before her.
She nearly screamed.
“Do not.” He warned.
She was upset with herself that she’d followed his command, but he had a look to him that told her that few people challenged his wishes.
“Why are you in my room?” She demanded.
“We will be rooming together. I see that it is necessary.”
“What are you talking about?” She asked confused.
“How dare you leave your door unlocked for anyone to walk in and how dare you think to open your door to another man dressed like that.” ~ within Chapter 2

Blog Tour - Feasted On: Not Always a Saint by Mary Jo Putney | Review

Today I'm turning my blog over to Mary Jo Putney, with a review of her latest novel "Not Always a Saint," which is the SEVENTH novel in The Lost Lords Series!! [Blog Tour will run on August 24 - September 18, 2015]

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 352; Kindle Edition - File Size: 430 KB; Audiobook - Unabridged | Release Date: August 25, 2015 | Publisher: Kensington : Zebra Books | Obtained: Pump Up Your Book / NetGalley

"Not Always a Saint" [The Lost Lords Series, Book 7] by Mary Jo Putney (aka M. J. Putney)

Author's Book Description : “Adventure, passion and pure reading pleasure!” – Jo Beverley

After the death of his sweetheart when he was at university, Daniel Herbert buried his grief in medical studies and his passion for healing. Viewed as a saint by those who know him, in his own mind he never quite manages to live up to his own high standards.

Most men would be thrilled to learn they’ve inherited a title and estate from a distant relative, but Daniel is appalled because the burden of wealth will interfere with his medical calling. Warily he accepts that he must enter society and seek a wife—a sensible woman who can oversee his properties, leaving him free to continue his work. He does not expect to become intoxicated by a woman called the Black Widow, who is as mysterious as she is shockingly beautiful…

Jessie Kelham’s looks have always been a curse. Now alone with a young daughter and a perilous secret, she is in need of protection. But dangerously attractive Daniel Herbert is not the kind of husband she has in mind. If he recognizes her, the demons of her past will surely erupt. Yet they cannot keep apart—and soon they are drawn into a union that may bring joy—or shattering danger…

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Jezebel (Jessie/Lisbet) has had a tough life. Growing up as the daughter of a very strict vicar then to become married to an abuser and now to have her current husband pass away leaving her to safeguard her daughter by any means necessary, like finding another man to marry who can give her security and protection sooner then she would like too. Daniel is a perfect choice. He’s the type of man she would like to marry, if only he was a bit older, but with her “shady past” can she be the right woman for him?

While overall a mysterious novel full of intrigue, it was the characters’ banter and the circumstances that brought Jessie and Daniel together that held my interest! Set during the Regency era in England, it deals with abusive husbands/fathers, bigamy, treacherous nephews, an unwanted husband search, and more than enough other things to keep its readers on their toes. In addition, I enjoyed that while this novel is a part of a series, it brings the some previous characters in so seamlessly while building for the following novel (#8) and still coming off as a standalone so I could understand everything that was going on. Very well written and the ending was VERY surprising!

As for the main characters, Jessie and Daniel, they are a matched set. On paper, they were everything both didn’t want for in a partner. Yet, as they get to know one another, better they find that they are the perfect match! I don’t think I’ve ever stated this for a character, but I found Daniel to be pure, and while he constantly says that he is no saint, I will admit he is quite the gentleman. He’s one man I’d recommend anyone to fall for! Together Daniel and Jessie make a very good team. I’d LOVE to read more about them!

I recommend this novel to those who are fans of the series and/or to those looking for an intense Regency romance!

Refusing to back down, he asked, "Do you dislike me? I've thought there was a certain harmony of mind as well as a powerful attraction between us, but perhaps that's wishful thinking on my part."
She bit her lip. She was a good liar when necessary, but she didn't want to lie to this man. "You're not wrong, but attraction isn't a sound basis for a marriage."
"Isn't it a start?" he asked quizzically. "Shouldn't we at least try to discover if we'd suit?"
"Didn't anyone ever tell you it's ungentlemanly to ask a lady why she doesn't accept you?" Jessie said with sudden exasperation. "A simple 'no' should suffice!"
His mouth curved wryly. "As with the rule about morning calls, I'm aware of that, but I don't choose to comply. This is too important. You're too important." ~ within Chapter 11

About the Author :

Mary Jo Putney was born in Upstate New York with a reading addiction, a condition for which there is no known cure. After earning degrees in English Literature and Industrial Design at Syracuse University, she did various forms of design work in California and England before inertia took over in Baltimore, Maryland, where she has lived very comfortably ever since.

While becoming a novelist was her ultimate fantasy, it never occurred to her that writing was an achievable goal until she acquired a computer for other purposes. When the realization hit that a computer was the ultimate writing tool, she charged merrily into her first book with an ignorance that illustrates the adage that fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

Fortune sometimes favors the foolish and her first book sold quickly, thereby changing her life forever, in most ways for the better. (“But why didn’t anyone tell me that writing would change the way one reads?”) Like a lemming over a cliff, she gave up her freelance graphic design business to become a full-time writer as soon as possible.

Since 1987, Ms. Putney has published over forty books and counting. Her stories are noted for psychological depth and unusual subject matter such as alcoholism, death and dying, and domestic abuse. She has made all of the national bestseller lists including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USAToday, and Publishers Weekly. Five of her books have been named among the year’s top five romances by The Library Journal, while three were listed in the Top Ten Romances of the year by Booklist, published by the American Library Association.

A ten-time finalist for the Romance Writers of America RITA, she has won RITAs for "Dancing on the Wind" and "The Rake and the Reformer" and is on the RWA Honor Roll for bestselling authors. She has also been awarded two Romantic Times Career Achievement Awards, four NJRW Golden Leaf awards, plus the NJRW career achievement award for historical romance. In 2013 she was awarded the Romance Writers of America Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award.

Though most of her books have been historical romances, she has also published three contemporary romances, several paranormal historicals with strong fantasy elements, a young adult historical fantasy trilogy, and numerous novellas and short stories. She is currently writing the New York Times list bestselling Lost Lords historical romance series for Kensington.

Ms. Putney lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her nearest and dearest, both two and four footed. She says that not least among the blessings of a full-time writing career is that one almost never has to wear pantyhose.

Mary Jo Putney is the recipient of the 2013 RWA Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award

"Reap & Repent" [The Reaper Series, Book 1] by Lisa Medley

Author's Book Description : They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! All her life Ruth has known she was different, especially with her ability to see other people’s auras. However, since she was twelve-years-old, when she witnessed her father’s death, she has been alone keeping herself away from people and afraid of her ability. Now, an adult with a PhD Ruth’s life dramatically changes after her mother dies and Deacon—a two hundred and six year old reaper—inserts himself into her life to show her that she is a reaper too. Yet, as their time together brings them from one extreme circumstance to the next and their connection exponentially grows, they’ll have to decide what they are willing to do to keep one another safe…

Intense and dynamic with a more unique setting then I am use to reading, it become intrigued from the very beginning. Ruth is a surprising character because in the beginning she is not what I would have expected as a leader, very scared of everything around her even herself in a way, yet as her determination grows to learn more while she gains the relationships with Deacon and Nate she becomes a force to be reckoned with. I liked how unflappable she was when it came to those she cares about. Learning about being reaper and the hierarchy of it all was interesting, especially seeing it all through Ruth’s eyes.

While I found Deacon to be one hunk of a man, he’s also a bit over confident in his abilities so much so that when Ruth comes into the equation he falters quite a bit. Nevertheless, I liked reading about Ruth and his growing relationship. It was fast-paced, intoxicating, and relentless. Very hard not to root for them!

I will say that this is a “never-ending story” it seems. Meaning that while Deacon and Ruth’s personal story basically concludes with this novel, there are still leftover questions about Ruth along with what will happen to her friends and her from this point forward. Basically, the reader is left with a whole bunch of intrigue with hopes of what is next to come. I’m definitely curious! =0)

Overall, I recommend this novel and series to those looking for an intense fantasy romance based around “good” vs “evil.”

-- On a side note --
When thinking about Ruth’s parentage (which you don’t really find out in this novel) I kept thinking of Star Wars’ Luke and Leia while kind of believing/hoping that Nate and Ruth would turn out the same way, miraculously find out that they were siblings.

Her own experience was proof that not everything was black-and-white.
Most people said that they didn’t believe in the supernatural, but if they believed in God, they should at least believe in the possibility of everything else. If God, then why not other supernatural entities: Satan? Angels? Demons? Vampires? Werewolves? Reapers? It was a slippery slope for sure. It was just too much. Way, way too much. Ridiculous actually. The stuff of fairy tales or nightmares, she thought. Yes, nightmares. And the man in the next room? What about him? About the Author :

Lisa has always enjoyed reading about monsters in love and now she writes about them, because monsters need love too.

She adores beasties of all sorts, fictional as well as real, and has a farm full of them in her Southwest Missouri home, including: one child, one husband, two dogs, two cats, a dozen hens, thousands of Italian bees, and a guinea pig.

She may or may not keep a complete zombie apocalypse bug-out bag in her trunk at all times, including a machete. Just. In. Case.

Book Excerpt :

“I want answers. In the hospital, I sensed something about you when we met… Your mother was Mary Scott. Correct? She died in that hospital room while you were there?”

“I didn’t do that. It wasn’t my fault,” she blurted out.

“Okaaay,” he proceeded cautiously. “Did you touch her before you left?”

She considered him, her mouth going dry. She had touched her. She’d given her that final kiss on the forehead.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Ruth couldn’t look at him as she began to realize what all of this might mean. Had her bizarre handicap really killed her father, and now her mother, too?

She was a killer.

“You’re not a killer,” he said, rolling his eyes.

“I thought you couldn’t read minds!” She sobbed, tears choking her throat closed.

It’s my fault. I AM a killer.

“You’re not,” he insisted. “I think you’re a reaper, like me.”

Her heart starting beating faster and her vision started to go blurry around the edges. The whole room sped down a black chute into darkness. She was going to pass out. She was going to pass out with a strange supernatural man in her house.

God help me.

"The Amish Mother" [Lancaster Courtships Series, Book 2] by Rebecca Kertz

Author's Book Description : Unexpected Love

After all, Zachariah Fisher is the true heir of the property. And he could decide to send her away from her family and her home of two years. Lancaster Courtships: Life and love in Amish country

Collect all 3 book in the series!
  • "The Amish Bride" by Emme Miller
  • "The Amish Mother" by Rebecca Kertz
  • "The Amish Midwife" by Patricia Davids

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars!! As a "cripple" life for Elizabeth (Lizzie) has always been tough but at least after she married Abraham she felt useful. Now two months after her husband's deadly accident, his younger brother Zachariah (Zack) comes into her life and changes it all around. Yet, even if her heart wants to move on is that the right choice for herself and her stepchildren?

This touching novel deals with the troubles that faces being a stepparent after their loved one has passed on while being in an Amish setting. I appreciated how Ms. Kertz handled this novel and how she portrayed the characters. Very well written and dynamic! Then to be pleasantly surprised with not one romance but two, it just kept putting a smile on my face.

Zack and Lizzie are an enchanting couple. From their subtle banter to how they "feel one another out" in learning to trust them to their growing relationship, I cannot praise their connection enough! Or should I say I wish I could have read more about them.

The other couple is Zack's older sister Esther and her childhood love David. Their secondary story was inevitable once the reader starts reading from Esther's POV and you see how much she missed him. It was as though they were meant to be no matter what. In addition, I enjoyed reading from Esther's POV mostly because it humanized her and you get to understand Zack and his family more.

Overall, I really liked the flow of this novel and got really entertained along the way. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys Amish Christian romances!!

Made the Grade: The Mythical Knights Series, Book 0.5

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 978 KB | Expected Release Date: September 15, 2015 | Publisher: Self-Published | Obtained: Candice Gilmer | Originally Found Out About @ S&W Romance

"Brightest Shadow" [The Mythical Knights Series, Book 0.5] by Candice Gilmer

Author's Book Description : The darkest shadows sometimes have the brightest moments.

Losing a father is always hard, and losing a father who’s the alpha of your werewolf pack is harder, yet that’s exactly where David Drigan finds himself--lost and rudderless after the death of his father.

The loss leaves him and his family wondering, will he ever be strong enough to lead his pack?

Trying to step into his place in society, David meets Kelsey.

Blonde. Curvy. Attitude. And there’s something about her that makes David’s beastly desires surface unlike ever before. The need to take her and protect her, if only from herself, overwhelms him.

Kelsey doesn’t need anyone to take care of her. Never has. An absentee family taught her one thing--take care of yourself, because no one’s going to do it for you.

But there’s just something different about David. One night at her favorite decrepit amusement park, she learns there’s a lot more to David than she ever expected.

There’s a lot hidden in the shadows.

Can they find the light, lost in the dark?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! Ever since she was a girl, Kelsey realized that it was better to look after yourself instead of hoping anyone, let alone family, would do it for you. So, when David, a soon-to-be Alpha werewolf, comes into her life wanting to help her out anyway possible she resists from the beginning. Yet, with an undeniable connection between them, Kelsey will soon learn that being alone is no longer an option that is if she can just give up some control…

This novel was a GREAT start to this series! Filled with intrigue and suspense, leaving the readers curious to see what everything will lead to next. However, while I’m excited for this series and I liked all of this novel’s characters, I had a hard time appreciating Kelsey and David’s relationship. Basically, while I realize that Kelsey’s reaction to everything that happens to her in this novel is completely rational I have a hard time liking/enjoying “wishy-washy” characters and I didn’t like how Kelsey reacted after she found out David was a werewolf. Nevertheless, together David and Kelsey’s relationship was very dynamic and interesting to read about. I just wish what happened to get them to that point was laid out a bit better.

I DO recommend this novel and series to those looking for a unique take on werewolves and fantasy/paranormal romances!!

It’s bacon.
Heading toward the kitchen, she heard male voices laughing and joking, with the occasional mom-ish scolding in between.
It was barely six a.m. and everyone was up and way too chipper. Even the younger brothers who’d gotten her car.
It was such a strange sight to behold--like something out of a Lifetime movie.
It was a family that actually looked like they liked being together. Something she’d never actually witnessed before, and was sure was just a myth.
Huh. Families who like each other do exist... ~ within Chapter 8

"The Amish Bride of Ice Mountain" [Ice Mountain Series, Book 1] by Kelly Long

Author's Book Description : Like most Mountain Amish girls, Mary King has always dreamed of her wedding day. But she never imagined that a sudden, irresistible kiss would result in marriage to the handsome Englischer professor studying her unique community. Or that doing the truly honorable thing means keeping their relationship chaste so both she and Dr. Jude Lyons can someday go their separate ways.

But when Mary accompanies her husband-in-name-only to Atlanta to meet his wealthy, overbearing family, she's tempted more than ever by Jude's kindness, humor--and vulnerability. And when a wrenching misunderstanding causes her to return heartbroken to her remote Appalachian home, she's certain she's lost the real love they have found...and the shared future she's come to want so much. But a crisis of more than faith will work surprising miracles--and show Mary that love is strong enough to make the impossible come true.

My Book Review : 2 out of 5 stars. This was a novel that didn't turn out as I had expected. And while that's fine, the turn of events that happen in this novel were just hard to overcome and appreciate, as I'd have liked too. So, I was able to read this up to Chapter 11 (27% on my Kindle) which is after Jude & Mary got off the mountain and it was her first experience in a hotel. While intriguing at times the plot was too slow for me to stick to it, I kept getting distracted. In addition, I found Jude to be a smart twenty-six year old man yet dumb when it came to his actions and Mary to be a naive nineteen-year-old when it came to anything outside her comfort zone (which was most things).

I was disappointed and wasn’t a fan. I don’t recommend it. But if you’re willing to read about a slightly “racier” take on the Amish world then this might be a book for you.

Book Teaser(s) :
A five-foot-wide boarded gap marked the entrance to the mine, the base of the wood covered by ferns and long grass.
"Would you like to try and transplant some ferns, Professor?" Mary teased.
Jude knew the joke now. He'd discovered in his research that the type of fern that grew outside the mine was peculiar and native only to the mountain, and the many attempts made by science in the past to transplant and grow the ferns elsewhere had failed. It was only one small, intricate mysteries related to the mountain.
"Nee, thank you." He smiled at her. "You forget that I'm transplanting my own mountain flower and I must put every effort into that venture."
He admired the blush that stained her white cheeks at his obvious compliment. ~ within Chapter 8
