The Books I'm Thankful For (so far) in 2015

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!

In tradition (well mine at least) of today being Thanksgiving Day, here is a list of ALL the books I've read thus far this year (and have given my highest ratings to), which means I'm VERY Thankful for finding/reading them!! So, here you go (listed in the order of when I read them this year):
  1. "The Cowboy's Forever Family" by Deb Kastner: 5 out of 5 stars!! In a bull riding accident a man loses his life, afterwards it makes his wife and best friend become friends too as they work to help each other out no matter their differences.

I was surprised with the outright animosity between Slade & Laney (Princess) when this novel began. However, what hooked me was how their relationship, and novel, progresses. [Read more of Jess' Review and TWO TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  2. "Huckleberry Spring" by Jennifer Beckstrand: 5 out of 5 stars!! Anna & Felty are match making again! Only this time Felty is being pulled through the ringer just to keep his grandson living with them. Poor thing. Together they try to get Ben & Emma back together again but because of one big secret and a bunch of lies, it might be a harder job than Anna originally planned. But she won't give up without a fight ... and Felty's wise words of course.

I really enjoyed this dramatically touching novel. Anna's quirky ways were all fun to read about but I also liked how sweet Ben was and how determined Emma is to see everything through. [Read more of Jess' Review and ONE TEASER for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  3. "Her Forbidden Cowboy" by Charlene Sands: 5 out of 5! Two years after the tragic loss of his wife and unborn child Zane is still overcome with grief and not sure what to do with himself. When his wife’s younger sister decides to stay at his vacation home in California in hopes to pick up the pieces of her own life, Zane comes to realize what he’s been missing and starts living again but does he really want to move on with his life for good?

I totally enjoyed this novel. With its subtle ways in romance and the emotions both Zane and Jessica (Jess) go through to deal with their grief this novel hits a homerun on many levels! [Read more of Jess' Review and TWO TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  4. "This Heart of Mine" by Brenda Novak: 5 out of 5 stars! After 17 years away a wrongly accused woman is released from prison, heads back home, and hopes to connect with her son. Yet as she grows closer to her son, she also grows closer to his father too. Will she be able keep her heart intact through it all or will she loose it along the way?

I was instantly addicted to this novel!! I loved the main and sub plots!! [Read more of Jess' Review and ONE TEASER for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  5. "The Promise of Palm Grove" by Shelley Shepard Gray: 5 out of 5 stars!! Leona (Le)—an Amish woman who is unsure if her fiancĂ© is really the right man for her—takes a vacation to Pinecraft with her two best friends and meets a man who changes her perspective for the future.

This engaging novel keeps you wanting more from the very beginning. Even though its plot was based around Leona and Zack (Zachariah/Zachary), with their budding friendship turned romance, it also brings you into the lives of Beverly (an older Mennonite woman who runs an Bed & Breakfast) and Effie (Zack’s Amish little sister who is dealing with Perthes disease) to give you an even broader perspective on the town itself. I enjoyed it all! [Read more of Jess' Review and ONE TEASER for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  6. "Caller of Light" by T. J. Shaw: 5 out of 5 stars!! King Marek travels to a neighboring kingdom with plans to meet the other King's daughter and agree to marry her, even though he isn't very hopeful or even happy about getting married for again he does need an heir. However, his plans change as soon as he sees then meets Carina, deciding to take her as a mistress instead, setting them both on a path neither expected...

WOW!! I am in love with this intensely dynamic fast-paced novel! It was like a fantasy driven Cinderella romance with surprising twists the whole way through. [Read more of Jess' Review and TWO TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  7. "Interaction with a Dragon" by Cheyenne Meadows: 5 out of 5 stars! Alex finally lands a job after desperately searching! Yet, since she's now working as a "gofer" for a "man" called Cannibal who is known for his strong personality and determined ways, is it really a good thing? Well, she needs the money and plans to stick with her new job no matter the risk. However, is she willing to risk her heart? Even if her feelings might not be returned?

From the witty banter between Alex & Cannibal (Byron) to reading about their growing relationship, it all helped me fall in love with this novel! I especially loved the scenes when they were at the Dragon Keep, mostly because they show off Cannibal's sweet side. [Read more of Jess' Review and THREE TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  8. "Mia and the Bad Boy" by Lisa Burstein: 5 out of 5 stars!! When Mia gets the chance of a lifetime to associate with her all-time crush--Ryder--for a month, she leaps at the opportunity. However, as soon as she arrives all her hopes of it being a "fun" experience disappears in the wake Ryder's personality. Yet, as their "relationship" progresses they find that they have more in common than they thought. Though will their differences be too much for them to overcome or will they be able to work through whatever comes their way?

This was one sweet novel that pleasantly surprised me!! I was prepared for a good girl/bad boy singer romance but what surprised me was how these two seemly different people find common ground. [Read more of Jess' Review and THREE TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  9. "What a Bachelor Needs" by Kelly Hunter: 5 out of 5 stars!! Mardie's life might not be grand, but it is her own and she's proud of what she has accomplished. However, when her friend purchases Jett for her as a handyman for a week from the local bachelor auction, Mardie freaks out a bit. It's not that Jett isn't nice, because he is. It's not that he can't help her, because her home can definitely use the work. It's just that Jett is the one man who she has had a longtime crush on, and is the man who saved her from that frightening night years ago. Now Mardie's scared to loose herself to the one man who could hurt her and possibly loose her heart too.

This fast-paced novel keeps its readers on their toes just as much as Jett keeps Mardie on hers. Fun, heartwarming, and intense it was entertaining from beginning to end. [Read more of Jess' Review and ONE TEASER for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  10. "His Lion Blood" by Scarlett Grove: 5 out of 5 stars!! In Mystic Harbor Vampires and Shifters are known enemies and it is forbidden for them to mate. However, once half-vampire Isabella and mountain lion shifter Ashton meet they find their connection undeniable and uncontrollable. Will they control the uncontrollable or will they embrace the unknown?

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced paranormal romance!! As this is the first novel I've read in this series, I found it involved enough to get a good grasp on the town while being completely standalone enough that you can enjoy it all by itself too. [Read more of Jess' Review and ONE TEASER for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  11. "Center Ice" by Cate Cameron: 5 out of 5 stars!! This novel reels you in with crazy squirrels than hooks you with a romance that is intensely sweet. When Tyler and Karen meet, their lives are stacked against them. As their relationship grows, they decide what they really want for themselves and what they are willing to do to help accomplish their goals.

I was riveted by this dramatic YA novel. Karen’s life is in turmoil; she just lost her mother in a car accident and is now living with her father’s “perfect” family. [Read more of Jess' Review and THREE TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  12. "A Will and A Way" by Claudia Harbaugh: 5 out of 5 stars!! After seventeen years of believing her father was just a traveling sales merchant, Philippa (Pippa) finds out that her father was actually the Earl of Milbank upon his death. In addition, he learns that she is actually a bastard. Approximately a year later, Pippa learns that in her father’s will she and her half-sister, Charlotte (Charlie), are to have a Season in London together without the interference of either of their mothers. During Pippa and Charlie’s time together, they grow close as sisters while trying to navigate the confines of the ton. Yet, Pippa is still uncertain if the ruse to pass off her being there as Charlotte’s cousin is the right one, but is telling the men in her life the truth about her parentage any better?

This fast-paced novella reminded me a bit of Ms. Austen’s "Pride & Prejudice" because of how much Pippa & Lord Trent (James) mimic Elizabeth Bennet & Mr. Darcy’s pride/stubbornness. [Read more of Jess' Review and TWO TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  13. "Sweet as Sin" by J. T. Geissinger: 5 out of 5 stars!! When Kat (Katherine) meets Nico during his music video shoot, she never expected her world to change in the blink of an eye. But it does. The question is does she have the courage to stay on and enjoy the ride or will "she run for the hills" too soon?

If you’re looking for an EXTREME romantic rollercoaster read than this is the book for you!! Very well written! At times, it made me feel like I was reading Kat's diary. Overall, Kat makes you fall in love all of the characters, even herself.

I was pleasantly surprised with how Kat & Nico's romance progressed and grew. It was erotically heartwarming in its extreme intensity. And while I'm shocked at where Ms. Geissinger took the plot at times, I LOVED how everything played out!! [Read more of Jess' Review and THREE TEASERS for this novel HERE | BUY YOUR COPY HERE]
  14. "In The Air Tonight" by Lori Handeland: 5 out of 5 stars! A little over four hundred years ago, while being burned at the stake two witches (a husband and wife) do one final spell that sends their triplet baby daughters into time in hopes of finding a place when witchcraft won’t be a crime and they’ll be “safe.” The spell works ….

Throughout her life, Raye (Rachel) has been able to see and speak to ghosts. However, when she was five year old, and overheard her adopted father talk about how he didn’t like it and wanted to “send her back,” she learned that talking to ghosts wasn’t normal and did everything in her power to stop. Now at the age of twenty-seven she might still hide her “gift” but knows that it won’t go away.

One-day Raye’s “normal” life suddenly changes when a unique murder happens downtown and homicide detective Bobby (Robert) rushes into her life. In some ways things go from bad to worse while in others things get better but as sparks start to fly between Bobby and Raye other forces try to keep them apart, can they work things out between each other or will their pasts mess up what they want for their futures?

Meet Aoife Marie Sheridan | Interview & Spreading the Word

Today I'm showing off Aoife Marie Sheridanand some of her novels that I recently interviewed her about!

My Q&A with Aoife Marie Sheridan :

Jess : Please describe your Saskia Trilogy in one to five sentences.

Aoife : It’s a story of a young woman finding herself in the most extreme situations. Learning to love, accept loss, and fight for what she believes in. It’s a journey of self-discovery and understanding no matter how powerful we may think we are, things can change in the blink of an eye.

Jess : Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

Aoife : The story comes first for me not the characters. It’s a time, place and situation that will plaque me until I write it down. At present I have twenty one books I still wish to write and yet the stories I want to tell still come. I hope one day I get to tell them all.

Jess : Please describe "Hunters" [Demon Series, Book 1] in 75 words or less.

Aoife : A story about a damaged soul, living in a world where angels and demons are real. After losing her whole family Abigail spirals into a state of depression that doesn’t allow her to see any beauty in her life or the world. Her path of self-destruction affects the ones closest to her, especially Daniel (Zee) who loves her deeply. He is her salvation and her downfall.

Jess : Is there any differences and/or similarities between Sarajane from your Saskia Trilogy and Bellona from your Saskia Trilogy?

Aoife : Sarajane and Bellona are similar in ways. If Bellona had been given a chance in live she would have been a good person, she still would have been a spoilt princess but nothing like the way she turned out. She has a softness like Sarajane but her childhood has turned her into a bitter and cruel person. Sarajane was given a good start and now as she faces her difficulties she does so with a strong will. Her foundations are strong, Bellona’s weren’t.

Jess : What sparked the idea for "Hunters?"

Aoife : It came to be when I went to see a healer that my friend recommended to me. After our healing session he spoke of angels so vividly that I was left a little in awe. And where there is good, there is also evil. So the healer speaking of angels made me think of demons and so hunters the story was born.

Jess : What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write in a novel and why?

Aoife : The whipping Scene with the queen Bellona was a very hard scene to write. I loved it because it challenged me in ways. I needed so much emotion as I wrote it and had to bring it all to the top before I started writing. I wanted the reader to really feel not just the servant’s pain but Bellona’s also. I hope I did.

Jess : In regards to The Saskia Trilogy, if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Aoife : Not one thing. Yes I look at it now four years later and feel I could maybe do better, but that story was right at the time I wrote it, so I refuse to change it.

Jess : Out of all of the secondary characters within "Hunters," do you have one or two favorites so far? If so, who are they and can you tell us why?

Aoife : Cathy is one of my favorites, her sarcasm covers up her pain in life, yet she can be pretty funny in a cruel sort of way. But the cracks are so visible and she tries so hard to cover them up. She’s a complex character and one I think everyone can identify with at some stage in their lives. I know I can.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Aoife : I have six written books. Oh that’s not fair, I can’t pick a favorite, but since your twisting my arm I would say "Drowning in Lies," my newest book. I just love the world and characters.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Aoife : "Drowning in Lies" [Seven of Kings Series, Book 1] is my next release.

Here is the Blurb:
Chaos reigns throughout the seven kingdoms of Nirra. Fighting for their lives as their Kings wage war against one and other, the people are used as pawns.

While the search begins for a woman who will birth the strongest heir to the throne, a healer runs from a fate she doesn’t want to embrace, a witch finds out about her powers, and a traumatised amnesiac struggles to remember who she is.

In a world at war and with no control over their own destinies, they are all drowning in lies. Only the strongest will survive.

Page on Amazon: https://kindlescout.amazon.com/p/HKWGSEDSR9UL

Jess : Do you have a favorite aspect of spring/summer that you’d like to share with us?

Aoife : Not really my favorite season is winter. Love the cold. My favorite thing to do is curl up with a book, or nestle down and do some writing.

Jess : What cartoon character best represents your personal philosophy?

Aoife : Oh Lord that’s tough. I really don’t know.

Jess : If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Aoife : Your questions are so hard. Hmmm .... "The Irish Author." (that’s the best I can do)

"Dark Wolf Enterprises" [Dark Wolf Enterprises Series, Book 1] by A. M. Griffin

Author's Book Description : The big break Trudy Hollander’s small accounting firm needs has finally arrived, but unfortunately it comes with murder, mayhem and Kristof Farkas, a man she just can’t seem to resist. Even worse, Kristof is the CFO of Dark Wolf Enterprises—the one person who can pull the plug on the job that will take her company to the next level.

And then there are the assassins who can jump from three stories up and still be able to run away...

Kristof has no intention of giving in to his inner wolf and claiming Trudy. She’s human. Too fragile to withstand being a shifter’s mate. But the need to protect her is stronger than his resolve, and his desire is more powerful yet. He’ll fight with everything he has to keep her safe, both from those who would hurt her, and from himself.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars. Landing her newest account is all that matters to Gertrude (Trudy/Tru) right now. Yet, when her world gets turned upside down because of the information she learns Trudy will find out what it really means to be a part of something great, if only she can be accepted for who she happens to be.

This intense novella keeps you on your toes as you follow Trudy and Kristof’s growing relationship through an extreme bout of “getting to know one-another.” I liked Trudy’s character. It was fun reading about Trudy finding other ways of besting Kristof even though she’s portrayed as being weak because she’s a human. They are definitely a matched set.

In addition, while I liked how this novella laid out the foundation for this series, I wish the ending for it was a bit more meaningful instead of Kristof fighting himself for its majority and then coming to the conclusion that he shouldn’t have done what he does. I guess it was just too abrupt for me to like completely. Nevertheless, I am intrigued by Meisha (Trudy’s small spitfire best friend) and can’t wait to see where this series will lead us next!

I recommend this novella to those who are looking for a quick paranormal romance!

Book Teaser(s) :
“I swear. Who gave these idiots a marriage license in the first place?”
Trudy hadn’t been paying attention to the bickering couple on screen. Who aired their dirty laundry on national television anyway?
“I mean, he knew the baby wasn’t his when they got married. Why is he so surprised that the new baby isn’t his too? Give me a break.” Then for added measure, Meisha screamed at the television. “She’s a whore, Jessie! Your momma warned you not to marry her.”
Trudy shook her head. Meisha spent most of her days watching daytime television and communicating with students via internet. Trudy realized that at some point her best friend might’ve lost touch with reality. ~ within Chapter 2
Streaks of blood were on his body. He looked...deadly. She startled and fell back.
She aimed the gun at him. “Don’t hurt me.”
“Trudy, darling.”
She stared at him.
“Y–yes.”
“If you’re going to shoot me, I’d rather you aim for my head and get it over with quickly.”
Her gaze followed the path of her aim. It was on his wonderful hanging cock. Aw shit.
“My other head,” he said softly. ~ within Chapter 8

About the Author :

A. M. Griffin is a wife who rarely cooks, mother of three, dog owner (and sometimes dog owned), a daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She’s a hard worker whose two favorite outlets are reading and writing. She enjoys reading everything from mystery novels to historical romances and of course fantasy romance. She is a believer in the unbelievable, open to all possibilities from mermaids in our oceans and seas, angels in the skies and intelligent life forms in distant galaxies.

Book Excerpt :

Kristof is some kind of freak and he’s being attacked by wolves. She was god knows where with god knows who.

She could be killed out here and no one would know how to find her body.

Her gaze shifted to the cockpit door. They could kill her.

Flare gun.

She scrambled to the back of the plane and flung open the closet door. On the top shelf was the metal box Kristof had told her about. Grabbing it, she pulled the box down. The handle slipped in her sweaty palms and hit the floor with a crash. The contents spilled at her feet.

She spotted the flare gun immediately. Grabbing it, she ran back to her seat by the window and aimed the gun at the cockpit door.

While she waited for the pilots to come out, she continued to watch the fighting below. One of the wolves was down, leaving Kristof to fight the other two. She peered at the cockpit door. Still shut. Then back to Kristof. One of the others wolves was now limping badly.

Kristof snarled and grabbed the uninjured wolf by the neck and shook him. The wolf went limp and appeared to be more like a rag doll than anything else. Kristof stopped and opened his mouth. The wolf he held there fell to the ground in a lump. The only wolf left stood his ground. Both he and Kristof growled and circled each other until, finally, the injured wolf seemed to realize this was a losing fight and scampered off into the darkness.

Standing alone, Kristof let out a long howl at the night.

Trudy pressed her face to the glass and looked left to right, trying to see if she spotted any more of the other wolves.

Kristof ran off, to where she couldn’t see.

He’s leaving me.

The thought ripped through her mind. Then an instant later, another thought eased the first.

He’d never leave me. I belong to him.

She’d no time to pick apart the last thought because, on the next blink, Kristof—the wolf—was standing outside of her window—watching her.

She knew it was him and not some other wolf, she felt he was hers. Their eyes locked. A part of her wanted to shrink away under his stare, but the other…wanted to claim him.

The cockpit door creaked open and the pilot peered at her. Yelping she raised her gun and aimed. Screaming, he shut the door before she could fire off a shot.

“Come out here and I’ll kill you! Do you see what happened to your buddies?” Her hands shook as she aimed the gun.

She was going to die. There was a man-wolf killer outside and a pilot-kidnapper in here.

Another glance outside and Kristof stood, as a man, watching her. A naked man. A wonderfully naked man.

She shook her head.

Wolf-beast.

“Trudy. Open the hatch. I’m coming back up,” He yelled out to her.”

Was she supposed to let him back in? He hadn’t said that.

She chewed on her lower lip, waiting for an answer she couldn’t think of. If she opened the door would he attack her? Was he a rabid beast who couldn’t control himself?

She shook her head. “No. You said not to open the hatch.”

“I meant don’t open the hatch for them.”

“Since I know your secret are you going to kill me now?”

“Don’t be silly. It’s cold out here. Open the hatch.”

Should she let him back in?

“Are the pilots still alive?” he asked.

Her gaze shot back to the cockpit. “Yes. But not for long,” she yelled, loud enough for the pilots to hear.

“I’m naked and it’s about thirty degrees out here. Can you please let me in?”

“Wh-what about your super-human heating abilities? Aren’t you supposed to be so hot that’d you’d melt snow?”

He cocked his head to the side. “This is not a young adult story. I’m freezing my ass off.”

“If he kills me I’m going to be so pissed,” she mumbled to herself.

Welcome to the Otherworld Fortune Teller Booth! Otherworld is all about sci-fi, fantasy, and the paranormal, and we are talking about the one question we have always wanted to ask a fortune teller. Jess Anastasi, Jody Wallace, Nina Croft, and Lisa Kessler are here to share their questions, and we would love to hear some of yours. So be sure to leave a comment, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway below! [Blog Tour will run from August 8 – 14, 2016 & Giveaway will run until August 11, 2016]

Fortune Tellers - Fact or Fiction Featuring Jess Anastasi, Jody Wallace, Nina Croft, and Lisa Kessler

Jess Anastasi :
I know a lot of people go to see fortune tellers to ask about their love life, but it's one thing I would never ask about. Of course I'd like to hear that I'm going to find (or have found) Mr. Right and we're going to live Happily Ever After for ever and ever... but what if that's not what the fortune teller told you? What if the fortune teller told you that you'll meet Mr. Right, but then he'll walk off a bridge while playing Pokemon Go and you'll spend the rest of your life alone except for a monkey you trained to fetch snacks from the fridge and walk your pet iguana, Frank? I mean, having a trained monkey would actually be kind of cool, but I don't know the first thing about having a pet iguana!

Jody Wallace :
What is the one question you've always wanted to ask a fortune teller?

First I'd check to see if the fortune teller had monkey paws. I've heard things about asking questions or getting wishes granted by monkey paws. Then I'd probably ask for the easiest three ways to stop the apocalypse. If there's no apocalypse on the way, maybe the fortune teller will have to give me another chance. Kind of like when you order the dark chocolate cocobits milkshake and they're out of dark chocolate cocobits so you get regular chocolate instead. The tricky thing would be if there's more than one apocalypse on the way, or if the easiest solution to the apocalypse is, "Get rid of all the humans." Which is why I'd ask for three ways! No, not a three way, I'm happily married person, three WAYS, in case one of them involves more death and destruction than the apocalypse itself.

Fortune tellers are so tricky!

Nina Croft :
I’ve never been to a fortune teller. I suspect carnivals are more of an American thing than British, but I probably would have steered clear of fortune tellers anyway, because I really don’t want to know my future. But maybe one question I would like to know is…will we encounter intelligent aliens in my lifetime? I’d love to meet aliens, find out that there are other sentient beings out there in the universe. And if they’re stunningly gorgeous, straight-out-of-a-sci-fi-romance, totally ripped aliens, all the better.

Lisa Kessler :
If it hadn't been for a fortune teller, I might not have ever published a book! I never planned on being a writer until I met a palm reader in New Orleans! I was in town for a trade show for work and while wandering around the French Quarter I decided to get my palm read. After the reading as she walked me to the door she said, “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“Are you a writer?”
“No.” I shrugged. “I write, but just for fun.”
She smiled and told me, “You’re going to be a famous writer someday.”
I left with my head spinning. While I waited for my plane in New Orleans, I jotted down plot ideas for "NIGHT WALKER" on cocktail napkins and six months later I had the first draft of "NIGHT WALKER" written!

Jess Anastasi has been making up stories ever since she can remember. Though her messy handwriting made it hard for anyone else to read them, she wasn’t deterred and now she gets to make up stories for a living. She loves loud music, a good book on a rainy day, and probably spends too much time watching too many TV shows. Jess lives in regional Victoria, Australia, with her very supportive husband, three daughters, two hyper-active border collie dogs, and one cat who thinks he’s one of the kids.

Jody Wallace grew up in the South in a very rural area. She went to school a long time and ended up with a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing. Her resume includes college English instructor, technical documents editor, market analyst, web designer, and general all around pain in the butt. She currently lives in Tennessee with her family: 1 husband, 1 grandma, 2 kids, 6 cats. One of her many alter egos is “The Grammar Wench,” which should give you an indication of her character as well as why she currently offers freelance editing. She is a terrible packrat and likes to amass vintage clothing, books, Asian-inspired kitchenware, gnomes, yarn, and other items that threaten to force her family out of the house. She also likes cats. A lot.

Nina Croft grew up in the north of England. After training as an accountant, she spent four years working as a volunteer in Zambia, which left her with a love of the sun and a dislike of nine-to-five work. She then spent a number of years mixing travel (whenever possible) with work (whenever necessary) but has now settled down to a life of writing and picking almonds on a remote farm in the mountains of southern Spain. Nina writes all types of romance, often mixed with elements of the paranormal and science fiction.

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Married to a Perfect Stranger

Book Excerpt :

Nathaniel Gresham, Viscount Hightower, stirred in his sleep. His hands groped for bedclothes, found nothing. Sensing wrongness, his consciousness rose through layers of befuddlement and wisps of dreams. He opened his eyes to find a gaping maw of three-inch fangs inches from his throat.
“Aah!”
Nathaniel threw up his arms to shield his face and twisted to the side. The convulsive movement brought him right to the edge of a large four-poster bed, and he scrambled to avoid falling three feet to the floor. He twisted in the opposite direction and struck out at the sharp, yellowed teeth. They did not snap shut on his forearm or lunge into his face once more. Indeed, they did not move at all, except sideways under his blow. There was no snarl or slaver, no spark of rage in the shiny eye behind the fangs. Nathaniel shoved them farther away and sat up.
He was stark naked, on a large bed stripped bare of linens, covered only by a moth-eaten gray wolf skin. The wretched thing’s head had been carefully placed on his chest, to ensure the rude awakening. His hips still rested under its hindquarters. Molting fur peppered the bed. The mere sight of the ancient pelt made his skin itch. Revolted, he pushed it all the way off and moved to the foot of the bed, struggling to get his bearings. This wasn’t his bedchamber. The blue-striped wallpaper was alien, the furnishings unfamiliar; the windows with their slant of early morning light were in the wrong place. Then he remembered. He was staying at the Earl of Moreley’s country house, because tomorrow—no, today—he was to marry the earl’s daughter at their local parish church.
Nathaniel glared at the wolf skin, then rubbed his hands over his face. This was what it meant to have five brothers—five younger brothers—on one’s wedding day. Or rather, on one’s wedding eve, a night they’d insisted upon marking with bowls of rack punch. Had it been three? Or had he lost count? No wonder they’d kept filling his glass, if they had this prank planned. Where the devil had they found a wolf skin in a strange house? And hadn’t he told his father, when Robert was born in his sixth year, that four sons were quite enough? Even for a duke, six sons were excessive. At this particular moment, Nathaniel thought that his parents might have been content with just one.
He rose, stretching stiff limbs and marveling that he had only a mild headache. Revenge on his brothers would have to wait for another day. Today, he was getting married. He was doing his duty to his name and his line, pledging himself to a woman who would be an admirable duchess when their turn came—may it be far in the future. The match was eminently suitable. All society acknowledged its rightness. And despite Violet’s irascible grandmother, the occasional bane of his existence, he could have no complaints.
Indeed, why had the word even occurred to him? No one had rushed him into marriage. He had enjoyed a plenitude of seasons in London and a number of agreeable flirtations and liaisons with delightful females. Though they had never spoken of it, he was aware that his parents had given him every opportunity to fall in love. But the passion that had overtaken them in their young days had not befallen him. He wasn’t sure why, but once he’d passed thirty he concluded it never would. He’d had more than enough time to observe that such a bond was rare in the circles of the haut ton.
Nathaniel stretched again, his bare limbs a bit chilly. This marriage was certainly not a penance. He liked Violet very much. They’d been acquainted for years. He did not know whether she’d had other offers, but he supposed that she too had waited for love to find her. They had that in common. They were also well suited by background, had similar tastes, and enjoyed the same even temperament. When he’d decided that the time for marriage had come, he’d simply known that she was the proper candidate. He expected their union to be gracious, harmonious, and ideal for the significant position they would someday be called upon to fulfill. And now it was time to stop wool- gathering, put on his dressing gown, and begin this momentous day.
Nathaniel walked over to the oaken wardrobe on the far wall and opened it.
It was empty. All his clothes had disappeared.
He stared at the bare hooks. This part of the prank would be Sebastian’s doing, he imagined. It had his next younger brother’s touch. Nathaniel met his own gaze in the mirror set into the wardrobe door, and acknowledged the spark of amused annoyance in his eyes. His brothers had a fiendish facility for complicated jests.
The figure in the glass shook its head. All the sons of the Duke of Langford were tall, handsome, broad-shouldered men with auburn hair and blue eyes. Sebastian was the tallest. Robert the wittiest. Randolph was acknowledged as the handsomest, James the most adventurous, and Alan the smartest. But he was the eldest, and the heir.
For as long as he could remember, Nathaniel had felt the weight of his destiny. The others said it was a burden to have everything done ahead of them, but he’d felt the onus of being the pattern, setting up the expectations, being the son visitors scrutinized the most. He would be the next duke; he must show he was worthy. Thus, he kept a tight rein on his wilder impulses. Instead, he was the one who came to the rescue when one of his brothers went too far, kicking up a lark.
And so now, he did not slam the empty wardrobe shut, but simply closed it. He would leave it to his valet to straighten this out. He wanted hot water for washing, and then clothes, and then breakfast. He went to ring for Cates, and discovered that the bell rope had been removed. He could see the wire to which it had been connected, near the ceiling, twelve feet up. It must have taken two or three of his brothers to reach so high.
For a moment he just stood there, staring at it. This final touch would be Robert’s idea, no doubt. He’d always been the most ingenious, the brother who added the crowning climax to a prank. Robert would be the one to set the others guffawing—describing their elder brother slinking through the corridors of the Earl of Moreley’s house wrapped in a wolf skin, like some sort of demented ancient Celt. Even Nathaniel had to smile at the picture. How would Violet’s fierce stickler of a grandmother like that? And all the other near and distant relations visiting for the wedding? He’d barely met most of them. Perhaps he’d twine some ivy from outside the window in his hair and attempt a Gaelic war cry.
Nathaniel laughed. Truth to tell, it was a splendid prank, unfolding like a puzzle box upon its hapless victim. All that remained was for him to wiggle out of the trap so cunningly set.
He eyed the windows and considered pulling down some of his almost-mother-in-law’s elaborate draperies to wrap about himself. But one panel would trail behind him like a coronation robe. The picture was little better than the wolf skin. Perhaps he would just wait until Cates arrived on his own. It couldn’t be too much longer. In fact, judging by the sunlight, his valet ought to have appeared well before now. Where the devil was he?
As if in answer to this thought, there was a knock at the door.
“Nathaniel?”
The voice was the last he expected. “Violet?”
“Are you all right? James said you needed to speak to me most urgent—” The door opened, and Nathaniel’s promised bride looked around the panels. “Oh!” Her mouth dropped open.
Nathaniel—stark naked, next to a bed sporting only a rumpled wolf skin—braced for a shriek, a shocked retreat, babbled apologies. But Violet just looked at him. Indeed, it seemed as if she couldn’t tear her eyes away. He could almost feel her gaze traveling along his skin, as if it left trails of warmth. He saw something stir in those gray eyes, something he’d never observed before, and his body began to respond to the possibility of much more than he’d expected from his suitable marriage. Respond all too eagerly.
Nathaniel moved over behind the bed. “My brothers’ idea of a joke,” he said with a gesture toward the wolf skin.
Violet blinked. Color flooded her cheeks, and she looked away. “How did they...?” Her voice was rather choked.
“They are endlessly inventive. They stole my clothes as well. Would you have someone send Cates to me? I would ring but”—he pointed to the bell wire—“they were quite thorough.”
Violet glanced at the denuded wire, swallowed, and gave a quick nod. “Of course.” In the next instant, she was gone.
“Well, well,” murmured Nathaniel to the wolf. “That was interesting.”
His days of being capable of interest long past, the wolf made no reply.
