Warm air filled with a mixture of scented candles and acrid hair dye greeted his nose.
Happy Dragon Soul day, my cherubs of delight! I hope you enjoy Rowan and Sophea as much as I did. :)

"I don't know whether to be more disturbed by the fact that you think a dog can talk or that you can stand there, stark naked, without so much as a stapler as a weapon, and hold me prisoner." I adopted a quite reasonable, conversational tone, the sort intended to calm deranged people and keep them from committing acts of violence. I tried very hard not to notice just how nice the naked Kostya felt against me, the unyielding planes of his body being softened by my curves. It was a wonderful demonstration of how men and women fit together, but now was not the time to dwell on that subject.
His eyes were black, I noticed as he scowled down at me. Not dark brown but black, as black as his pupils, but a shiny black, one that glittered with little specks of silver. Unfortunately, at that moment, the glitter took the form of ire. "What the hell are you talking about?" he demanded to know. "What stapler?"
"There's no stapler," I said, finding myself suddenly blighted with several conflicting desires, ranging from the urge to grab his head and kiss him to laughing at the crazy situation, stomping on his toes, kneeing him in the naked noogies, and running away.
He looked even more irritated. ~ within Chapter 5
"For a man who doesn't want me, you sure end up kissing me a lot," I snapped, casting yet another glance at my feet before looking around the room. There was no fire to be seen, and only the faintest black smudge on the floor were the little pools of flames had been. "But I'm going to let your overbearing arrogance---"
"I am not arrogant."
"---and self-centered egotism---"
"I am a wyvern! The welfare of my sept falls on my shoulders."
"---go, because this fire thing just freaks the bejebus out of me. Wait a minute---dragon fire? That's a thing? A real thing?"
"Dragons control their fire, yes," he said, looking impatient.
"I object to that," I said, pointing at his face. "You can't give me that impatient, 'How did you not know that dragons have fire, let alone control it' look when that's so out of the bounds of normalcy that it never even struck me as possible. Well, to be true, the same can be said about dragons, but still! You didn't tell me that the whole fire-breathing dragon thing was real."
"You are an odd woman," he said thoughtfully.
"Odd good, or odd bad?" ~ within Chapter 6
"What's that mean?" I heard myself ask, even though I was blind and bemused.
The hard thing I hit shifted beneath me and groaned. "You don't speak Latin?"
I waited a minute until the wavy blackness that seemed to swim around me faded, and I could see. I rolled off Kostya and glared at him as best I could. "I'm a half-Senegalese, half-Irish woman who was born in America and raised in Sweden. Do you think I speak Latin?"
"I see no obstacle to you knowing it." ~ within Chapter 17

"You look so beautiful."
Betsy snorted, looking tired. "I don't believe ya.'" She slowly walked toward the bed, sat on top of it, and looked back at Sandra. "I'm dyin', I know that."
Sandra was taken aback with what Betsy had said. She drew a breath, stood up, and finally sat down beside Betsy. "Don't talk like that, Betsy," she kindly said, affected with the child's lack of hope. "Believe me when I tell you that you are so beautiful." ~ within Chapter 5 - titled 'Sandra'

"Thanks for the lift," she said as she opened the door.
"No need to thank me. As your man, that's the least I could do," Joseph replied. Olivia's eyes opened wide. He had just referred to himself as her man. He had sounded so sexy when he said it. Olivia felt butterflies in her stomach.
"You are not my man," she said to him. "And I am certainly not your woman!"
Joseph smiled at her. He leaned towards her. This time Olivia quickly moved backwards. She moved too quickly and with so much force, she fell out of the car. She let out a squeak as she fell out. She landed on her bottom.
Olivia could not believe that she had just fallen out of the car like that. She had tried to dodge his kiss and ended up on her bottom. Joseph jerked his head forward and looked a her. "Are you okay?" he asked her. Olivia burst into laughter. She could not help but laugh at herself. Joseph raised his eyebrows.
"You find this amusing?" he asked her. Olivia laughed for a few more seconds before she cleared her throat and tried to compose herself.
"I am surprised that you don't," she replied. ~ within Chapter 14

"How many of these people will want me dead?" I whispered.
"Doesn't matter. Council meetings are always peaceful. Everyone here has proven their ability to maintain control." Kade shrugged. "They may want to kill you, but they won't actually do it."
How reassuring. ~ within Chapter 15
As he loped out of sight to inform the head of the house about my arrival, Ceres turned to me and punched me sharply in the shoulder.
"Fuck! What'd you do that for?"
She took my left hand and gestured to the plain titanium band. "Why wasn't I invited? Was it a private ceremony? Who is she... or he?" Her green eyes grew a little wider, as if all of the pieces had finally fallen together. "Oh, my God, who is he, Uncle Ian? When do I get to meet him? Did you finally get married since it's legal now?"
"I'm not gay."
"Oh... awkward." ~ within Chapter 9 - titled '~Ian~'
