My Book Review : 5 out of 5 stars!! For a majority of Becca's life she has felt like she has never fit in (though some of it was her own doing) but she tried to make good choices for those around her most of the time. It all led her to keeping a huge secret from her family seven years ago. Now with her life in turmoil again she goes home to make amends. Yet the one person her "big secret" is all about, Jack, sets her life for another curve ball. Could everything finally be turning around for the better now? Or will fate decide to take away all of their options and throw them for a loop too?Bare with me as I try not to give too much away. But oh my word!! In this novel you deal with loss (in quite a few different forms) while watching the characters deal with continuing on with their lives as their "worlds" fall apart around them. I know that might sound a bit overly dramatic for a contemporary romance novel but it's what this novel portrays Becca and Jack going through.
This was a riveting tale that I could not put down. I wept, laughed, and was charmed by this full cast of delightful characters. Ms. Gabriel created a unique plotline that builds this novel with so much warmth that you just want to hug all of the characters to let them know everything will be all right. In addition, I liked the idea that though one (or more) characters are diagnosed with a terminal illness it never stopped those said characters to still do the "right" thing for the plotline and helping the other characters' growth instead of hindering them.
With that being said, I will state that I have never read any other novel within Ms. Gabriel's St. Caroline Series before. And while I don't believe that it hindered my reading or enjoyment of this novel, I still had a harder time understanding some of Ms. Gabriel's secondary character choices, their possible storyline needs, and the obvious secondary plotline cliffhanger that I'm hoping will be mentioned in the following novel (book 3).
What we're all here for is the dynamic duo though. Becca and Jack are extraordinarily giving characters, as they keep trying to make sure everyone in their lives will be okay. Though they had two rocky starts, I enjoyed their missteps and how Jack finally lands his girl. Together they made a great pair and seemed to be the perfect counterparts to one another. I loved Becca's vulnerable "tough girl routine" and seeing underneath Jack's all-American good boy persona. Simply a wonderfully sweet couple that you need to root for!
I HIGHLY recommend this novel to anyone wanting a uniquely written contemporary sweet romance.
