Made the Grade: True Destiny Series, Book 5

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 684 KB | Release Date: December 16, 2014 | Publisher: Samhain Publishing | Obtained: Amazon.com | Originally Found Out About @ NetGalley

"Not Broken" [True Destiny Series, Book 5] by Dana Marie Bell

Author's Book Description : Genre: Paranormal Romance, Menage (M/M/F)
Length: Novella

Three hearts are stronger than the sum of their scars.

Slade Saeter endured centuries of torture, longing for the day could claim Magnus Tate and Sylvia Grimm as mates. Now freedom is his, but nightmares still plague this son of Loki, and he fears his lovers will believe him too fragile to bond.

Always attracted to both sexes, Magnus never thought he could have the woman of his dreams, not when she was broken by his own father, her heart shattered by Thor's infidelities and their ultimate divorce. But Slade’s determination gives him a glimmer of hope.

Never one to let anything keep her down for long, Sylvia has long since healed from her ex-husband’s betrayals. But accepting her own stepson as a bonded mate? While it’ s something she can wrap her body around, her heart is another story.

As three war-weary, damaged hearts slowly find balance among them, they form bonds of surprising strength. But with danger descending upon them with the fury of a Valkyrie, time is the one thing they may not have.

Warning: This title contains explicit sex, graphic language and only two people who know for sure if Slade really is hung like a horse. (They aren't talking.)

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This novel takes over where "Morgan’s Fate" (Book 4 of this series) left off, based around Slade (Sleipnir-Loki's son) healing with the one mate he's found--Magnus (Magni-Thor's son)--while trying to win over his other mate--Sylvia (Sif-Thor's ex-wife)--with Magnus' help. The love triangle happens in the middle of the constant war going on between Kir (with his followers) against his parents.

This is the first novel I've read within this series so I liked how it kept me in the loop of who's who and what they are up to so I didn't feel lost. In addition, I liked how Slade, Magnus, & Sylvia's relationship grew throughout this novel. Their relationship was sweetly written, yet highlighted with enough spicy scenes to keep you on your toes wanting more.

Another thing I liked was how it touches on all the previous characters so that you are updated with what is going on with them while keeping the pace of the rest of the novel. I'm very interested to see where this series will go next!

I recommend it to those who like paranormal and/or Norse mythology romances!

Slade gently shoved him toward the door. “Now go make sure our other mate can come home.”
“Yes, sir.”
Slade laughed. “I like that. I’ll be herd stallion, you can be one of my mares.”
Morgan, the dick, began choking on his laughter.
“Ass. Hole.” Magnus grabbed hold of Morgan and dragged him toward the door. “Stop corrupting my mate.”
“Me?” Morgan was still laughing as they left the condo. “You have no one to blame but yourself for that one, brother.”
Magnus bit back his grin. No one else, indeed.
And that was just the way Magnus liked it. ~ within Chapter 2
Slade’s eyes went wide, and suddenly Sylvia found herself yanked to her feet along with Magnus. Slade was a lot stronger than he seemed. “Let’s go.”
Magnus was laughing as Slade dragged them into the bedroom. “Whoa there.”
Slade glared at him. “Did you just whoa me?”
Now Sylvia was giggling.
“You did not just whoa me,” Slade muttered, yanking Magnus’s shirt over his head.
“Yes, he did.” Sylvia laughed harder as Slade pushed Magnus down onto the bed.
“You are so going to pay for that.” Slade tugged Magnus’s pants off while Magnus watched indulgently.
“Yes, dear. Whatever you say, dear.” ~ within Chapter 8

"A Taste of Merlot" [The Napa Wine Heiresses Series, Book 2] by Heather Heyford

Author's Book Description : Raise your glass and join Heather Heyford as she pours a second serving in her series following these headstrong wine heiresses in their quest to strike out on their own...

Merlot St. Pierre is struggling to break free from her family name. Her college classmates whisper behind her back that her passion for jewelry design is little more than a hobby, since she’ll always have her father’s fortune. But Meri is determined to prove them wrong, and with the help of a handsome jewelry buyer, she just may taste her first sip of success—as long as she can hide who she really is...

Mark Newman’s family owns a chain of high-end jewelry stores, and he’s working hard to get out from under his aunt’s thumb and prove he has a good eye and a head for business. He’s certain Meri’s designs could be the next big thing, but he’ll have to convince her that she can use her famous last name to her advantage. As their business partnership takes root, an attraction begins to flourish—but they’ll both find that love, like wine, takes time to perfect...

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! Two people, both from famous families, find each through jewelry and learn more about themselves then they could have ever hoped for, now if they’ll only trust each other with all their past secrets everything should be fine.

This novel I found to be more “smoke and mirrors” when it came to Merlot (Meri) and Mark’s past secrets because of the way they are laid out for the reader. Yet, because of those secrets and how they are displayed made me intrigued for more and more. Nevertheless, I enjoyed with how Meri and Mark meet, interact, and come into their relationship. I especially enjoyed how Meri dealt with her jealousy issues when it came to Mark working with her archenemy. Plus, to top it off I really liked Meri’s sisters and Mark’s friends since they lightened up this novel just enough to like the main characters that much more.

It makes me intrigued to see where else to this series will go. I recommend this novel to those who like contemporary romances!

-- On a side note --

The only character I say for a fact that I didn't like was Meri's father Xavier St. Pierre because he might "take care" of his daughters but I'm not sure he really cares for them or their feelings.

The first time he'd called, he'd been told the professor he needed to speak to was already gone for the semester break. Mark had clearly identified himself as a buyer from Harrington's. Tried to sweet-talk the receptionist into understanding that all he wanted to do was help Gilty advance in her career, but nothing he said would budge her. She was sorry, but she was not permitted to release personal information of any student.
Now, when he'd finally gotten through to Gilty's returning jewelry prof only to hear that the student in question was no longer enrolled in the school, Labor Day had come and gone.
His long-simmering frustration had boiled over, leading him to shout questions at the person on the other end of the phone. The answer had been a click and a dial tone. No surprise, there. After all his stalking, they had him pegged as a nut job.

About the Author :

Born in the Northeast, Heather Heyford learned to walk and talk in Texas, and then moved to England. (“Ya’ll want some scones?”) While in Europe, Heather was forced by her cruel parents to spend Saturdays in the leopard vinyl back seat of their Peugeot, motoring from one medieval pile to the next for the lame purpose of ‘learning something.’ What she soon learned was how to allay the boredom by stashing a Cosmo under the seat. Now a recovering teacher, Heather writes love stories, feeds hardboiled eggs to suburban foxes, and makes art in the Mid-Atlantic. Book Excerpt :

“Dammit, Merlot. Stop. Let’s talk. Not about business. About us.”
Her hand stilled on her door handle momentarily, and then she angled her lithe body to slide in, disappearing from view.
Before she could lock him out, Mark yanked open the passenger side and bent to peer in at her.
“If you drive away now, we’ll both be sorry.” He wouldn’t get in her car against her will. But he still wasn’t ready to let her end things like this.
Instead of reaching for the ignition button, she slumped back in her seat.
“Can I get in?”
She hesitated, then gave the briefest of nods.
He climbed in beside her. For a moment they sat motionless, staring through the windshield at the multicolored neon glow of shop signs punctuating the night sky of the quiet town.
When he spoke again, his voice was a few decibels lower, and he’d managed to force calm into it despite his near panic over almost losing her.
“Did you think I could just walk away? Tonight was about more than the orders. At least, for me it was.” He looked her way, his agitation rearing up again. “I was sold on your talent from the first time I saw your work, back in early June. I spent all summer—all summer, Meri—searching high and low for you, making phone calls, trolling the Internet, never dreaming that when I finally found you, you were going to look like—like this.” He strained to see her expression in the dimness, desperate for a crumb of understanding. “Once we started talking, it kept getting better and better. Jeezus, you’re massively talented. . . . You’re smart. . . .”
She was practically perfect. There wasn’t a damn thing wrong with her. . . .
Get a grip, Mark. He took a steadying breath. Nothing wrong, except a stubborn streak fifty miles long. The distance from San Francisco to Napa, his town to hers.
He strained in the darkness to study her profile. His voice had gotten loud again, he realized with dismay. He should just shut up now.
“I’m sorry. I can’t figure you out, but I won’t grill you anymore. Promise.” He offered her his hand, and she let out an ironic laugh at the absurdity of shaking hands after what they’d just done in her studio.
“We’ll stick to safe topics for the rest of the night, deal? The weather. The ’Niners. Whatever. You pick.”
She eyed him doubtfully.
“I swear. No more questioning your decisions.” He hoped he could stick to his word. He had to.
She conceded with a tiny hint of a smile. “Tonight was about more than the orders for me, too.”
To his immense relief, she met him in the middle of the seat.
He dipped his head to kiss her, and her soft, moist lips parted. His kiss was intended to be consoling, not the start of anything new. Until she nudged closer, encouraging him with her tongue, and powerless to resist her, he responded in spite of himself. Soon, their breathing became audible in the hushed silence of the enclosed space, the fogged windows adding to the illusion of privacy.
He hauled her across his lap, cradling her head in the crook of his right elbow. The sight of her chest rising and falling had him ready to go again…

Three Cowboys Means One Too Many...

Good morning! Hope your holidays were wonderful and that you are enjoying the beginning of a brand new year. Thank you so much for inviting me to From Me to You... to talk about Sawyer and Jill’s story, "The Trouble with Texas Cowboys."

One sexy Texas cowboy is a hand full but add two more to that mix and you’ve got trouble. Jill hadn’t even had time to get settled in the bunkhouse on Fiddle Creek when a cowboy from each of the two feuding ranches came knocking on her door with an invitation to a family gathering the very next day. Quaid Brennan was the first and she was so startled she agreed to go to Sunday dinner with him. Then when Tyrell Gallagher showed up, she felt like she had to give him equal time. Number three was Sawyer O’Donnell, the cowboy her great aunt was forcing her to share the bunkhouse with but he wouldn’t be a problem. If they got past circling each other like wary feral cats, they might be friends but that was as far as it could go.

The first thing Jill decides is that she damn sure doesn’t want a Gallagher or a Brennan. Sure, they can offer her the moon and stars and either one can give her the biggest ranch in north Texas, but they want to court her for all the wrong reasons. She’s been led down the rich-cowboy daisy path in the not-so-distant past and she knows what kind of pain and heartache lies on that road. But Sawyer−now there’s a cowboy with his smart Irish wit and willingness to protect her that she might think about falling for...just not now.

Folks might think it’s difficult for romance to bloom in the middle of winter while feeding cows, taking care of a general store and spending every evening together at the Burnt Boot Bar and Grill. But flirting and fun can sure be found while a couple is out there in the snow or while they’re working together in close quarters behind a bar or maybe trying to make their way back home after being kidnapped. And a relationship can be born when two people need a partner desperately to keep from being swallowed up by the local feud.

"The Trouble with Texas Cowboys" is the second book in a four book series. There are two more coming so keep your boots on. "One Cowboy Too Many" is Leah Brennan and Rhett O’Donnell’s story. Rhett appears in Burnt Boot riding a big motorcycle with steer horns fixed to the front and Mavis Brennan doesn’t like him from day one but her granddaughter, Leah, is quite smitten with him even though she’s had her eye on forbidden fruit (a Gallagher of all things) for years. Then there’s a fourth book that brings Betsy Gallagher to the table as the heroine. My editor and I are still working on a title for that one.

"The Trouble with Texas Cowboys"
[Burnt Boot, Texas Series, Book 2] by Carolyn Brown

Author's Book Description :
Can a girl ever have too many cowboys?

No sooner does pint-sized spitfire Jill Cleary set foot on Fiddle Creek Ranch than she finds herself in the middle of a hundred-year-old feud. Quaid Brennan and Tyrell Gallagher are both tall, handsome, and rich...and both are courting Jill to within an inch of her life. She's doing her best to give these feuding ranchers equal time-too bad it's dark-eyed Sawyer O'Donnell who makes her blood boil and her hormones hum...

"Dark Wolf Enterprises" [Dark Wolf Enterprises Series, Book 1] by A. M. Griffin

Author's Book Description : The big break Trudy Hollander’s small accounting firm needs has finally arrived, but unfortunately it comes with murder, mayhem and Kristof Farkas, a man she just can’t seem to resist. Even worse, Kristof is the CFO of Dark Wolf Enterprises—the one person who can pull the plug on the job that will take her company to the next level.

And then there are the assassins who can jump from three stories up and still be able to run away...

Kristof has no intention of giving in to his inner wolf and claiming Trudy. She’s human. Too fragile to withstand being a shifter’s mate. But the need to protect her is stronger than his resolve, and his desire is more powerful yet. He’ll fight with everything he has to keep her safe, both from those who would hurt her, and from himself.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars. Landing her newest account is all that matters to Gertrude (Trudy/Tru) right now. Yet, when her world gets turned upside down because of the information she learns Trudy will find out what it really means to be a part of something great, if only she can be accepted for who she happens to be.

This intense novella keeps you on your toes as you follow Trudy and Kristof’s growing relationship through an extreme bout of “getting to know one-another.” I liked Trudy’s character. It was fun reading about Trudy finding other ways of besting Kristof even though she’s portrayed as being weak because she’s a human. They are definitely a matched set.

In addition, while I liked how this novella laid out the foundation for this series, I wish the ending for it was a bit more meaningful instead of Kristof fighting himself for its majority and then coming to the conclusion that he shouldn’t have done what he does. I guess it was just too abrupt for me to like completely. Nevertheless, I am intrigued by Meisha (Trudy’s small spitfire best friend) and can’t wait to see where this series will lead us next!

I recommend this novella to those who are looking for a quick paranormal romance!

Book Teaser(s) :
“I swear. Who gave these idiots a marriage license in the first place?”
Trudy hadn’t been paying attention to the bickering couple on screen. Who aired their dirty laundry on national television anyway?
“I mean, he knew the baby wasn’t his when they got married. Why is he so surprised that the new baby isn’t his too? Give me a break.” Then for added measure, Meisha screamed at the television. “She’s a whore, Jessie! Your momma warned you not to marry her.”
Trudy shook her head. Meisha spent most of her days watching daytime television and communicating with students via internet. Trudy realized that at some point her best friend might’ve lost touch with reality. ~ within Chapter 2
Streaks of blood were on his body. He looked...deadly. She startled and fell back.
She aimed the gun at him. “Don’t hurt me.”
“Trudy, darling.”
She stared at him.
“Y–yes.”
“If you’re going to shoot me, I’d rather you aim for my head and get it over with quickly.”
Her gaze followed the path of her aim. It was on his wonderful hanging cock. Aw shit.
“My other head,” he said softly. ~ within Chapter 8

Book Excerpt :

Kristof is some kind of freak and he’s being attacked by wolves. She was god knows where with god knows who.

She could be killed out here and no one would know how to find her body.

Her gaze shifted to the cockpit door. They could kill her.

Flare gun.

She scrambled to the back of the plane and flung open the closet door. On the top shelf was the metal box Kristof had told her about. Grabbing it, she pulled the box down. The handle slipped in her sweaty palms and hit the floor with a crash. The contents spilled at her feet.

She spotted the flare gun immediately. Grabbing it, she ran back to her seat by the window and aimed the gun at the cockpit door.

While she waited for the pilots to come out, she continued to watch the fighting below. One of the wolves was down, leaving Kristof to fight the other two. She peered at the cockpit door. Still shut. Then back to Kristof. One of the others wolves was now limping badly.

Kristof snarled and grabbed the uninjured wolf by the neck and shook him. The wolf went limp and appeared to be more like a rag doll than anything else. Kristof stopped and opened his mouth. The wolf he held there fell to the ground in a lump. The only wolf left stood his ground. Both he and Kristof growled and circled each other until, finally, the injured wolf seemed to realize this was a losing fight and scampered off into the darkness.

Standing alone, Kristof let out a long howl at the night.

Trudy pressed her face to the glass and looked left to right, trying to see if she spotted any more of the other wolves.

Kristof ran off, to where she couldn’t see.

He’s leaving me.

The thought ripped through her mind. Then an instant later, another thought eased the first.

He’d never leave me. I belong to him.

She’d no time to pick apart the last thought because, on the next blink, Kristof—the wolf—was standing outside of her window—watching her.

She knew it was him and not some other wolf, she felt he was hers. Their eyes locked. A part of her wanted to shrink away under his stare, but the other…wanted to claim him.

The cockpit door creaked open and the pilot peered at her. Yelping she raised her gun and aimed. Screaming, he shut the door before she could fire off a shot.

“Come out here and I’ll kill you! Do you see what happened to your buddies?” Her hands shook as she aimed the gun.

She was going to die. There was a man-wolf killer outside and a pilot-kidnapper in here.

Another glance outside and Kristof stood, as a man, watching her. A naked man. A wonderfully naked man.

She shook her head.

Wolf-beast.

“Trudy. Open the hatch. I’m coming back up,” He yelled out to her.”

Was she supposed to let him back in? He hadn’t said that.

She chewed on her lower lip, waiting for an answer she couldn’t think of. If she opened the door would he attack her? Was he a rabid beast who couldn’t control himself?

She shook her head. “No. You said not to open the hatch.”

“I meant don’t open the hatch for them.”

“Since I know your secret are you going to kill me now?”

“Don’t be silly. It’s cold out here. Open the hatch.”

Should she let him back in?

“Are the pilots still alive?” he asked.

Her gaze shot back to the cockpit. “Yes. But not for long,” she yelled, loud enough for the pilots to hear.

“I’m naked and it’s about thirty degrees out here. Can you please let me in?”

“Wh-what about your super-human heating abilities? Aren’t you supposed to be so hot that’d you’d melt snow?”

He cocked his head to the side. “This is not a young adult story. I’m freezing my ass off.”

“If he kills me I’m going to be so pissed,” she mumbled to herself.
