Blog Tour - Made the Grade: One Wet Summer by Ann Montclair | Interview, Review, & Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Ann Montclair, who I interviewed about her latest novel "One Wet Summer!!"

ALSO -- Be sure to comment on this post to be able to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAYs (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from June 18 - 29, 2012]

My Q&A with Ann Montclair :

Jess : What books did you enjoy reading while growing up?

Ann : I loved reading traditional fairy tales, Aesop’s Fables, Little Golden Books, Charlotte’s Web, YA classics by S. E. Hinton—then I found my mom’s romance novels, and my love of that genre took firm hold by the time I was 12 or 13.

Jess : Which of your characters would you most & least to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Ann : I’d love to cook for Maura Fields (the heroine) and Jessie Driscoll (the hero’s daughter) from "One Wet Summer." Maura would make a fantastic guest because she loves food and isn’t terribly particular, and Jessie could hang out with my twelve year old son. I’d host a barbecue at the local state park, and we could go swimming there. I know they’d enjoy those activities.

The person I’d least like to dine with would be Lexi from "The Billionaire’s Bauble"—she’s got questionable character, and she’s rather snobbish.

Jess : What sparked the idea for "One Wet Summer?"

Ann : My daughter Morgan was on the swim team at her HS, and I remember being impressed, awed even, at how comfortable she was in a swimsuit in front of scads of people. Such body confidence, especially when one is growing and changing, is admirable. I wanted to write an adult character who possessed that same mojo. Maura isn’t perfect by Hollywood standards, but she is perfectly at ease with her large size and athletic physique. That’s where the story started for me—at a pool, in a swimsuit.

Jess : When writing "One Wet Summer" did you listen to a certain song list/playlist that you could share with us?

Ann : I wish I had a clever response, but to be honest, I write without music. Household noise surrounds me, so music happens, but I don’t choose it. I leave that to hubby (jam bands) and son (rap).

Jess : If "One Wet Summer" were to be made into a film, who do you see playing the main characters and why?

Ann : Zooey Deschanel would make a cute Maura, and Ben could be played by Josh Duhamel. It’s funny, but a fellow author thinks the cover shot of Ben looks like a young Patrick Swayze.

Jess : Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

Ann : My stories are character driven, so the heroine is first, then her hero, then their situation.

Jess : Please describe your hero, from "One Wet Summer," in one to two sentences.

Ann : Ben Driscoll is a man who has had to work hard for his rewards, and those efforts have consumed him. Nothing has gone as planned or expected in his life, but he is dedicated to making the best of every situation.

Jess : In regards to your most recent novel, if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Ann : No. I’m a writer who believes, “I told the story the best I could.” Now that it’s told, I’m on to the next one.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Ann : I’ve written five books, and I’ve published two and have contracts for two more. Each novel I’ve written is part of my heart. They’re like my kids: I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite!

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Ann : I am in edits for my next novel, "Good Things Come in Tall Packages." The main characters are two people readers will meet in "One Wet Summer." It’ll be released August 2012 from Musa Publishing. Here’s the blub-in-progress for "Good Things Come in Tall Packages."
When vivacious Savannah attorney and socialite Lucy Alcott entered the Hyatt looking for fun, martinis, and if lucky, some hot sex, the last thing she expected to find was a man who would compel her to reveal her innermost thoughts and challenge her adversity to love and commitment. Polar opposites in every sense of the word, tall, handsome, debonair, African American Dr. Joe Connors, with his compassion, deep spirituality, and philanthropic nature, rocked Lucy like no man had before. When an unexpected meeting six months later brings them together again, will a family crisis and Joe’s request for help overcome Lucy’s fear of losing her heart, or is the fact they are from two worlds and two ethnicities destined to keep them apart forever?
Jess : What is your favorite drink?

Ann : Coffee. I can’t live without it. I love red wine, too.

Jess : If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Ann : "Love Triumphs"

Jess : What book are you reading now? How do you like it so far?

Ann : I’m a voracious reader who consumes up to five books a week. Today I started "Sea Swept" [Chesapeake Bay Saga, Book 1] by Nora Roberts. I’ll read the other two in that series when I finish the first. I love it so far. Nora writes compelling characters, and I love her American settings.

About the Author :

I was born in Los Angeles, California, where my parents and grown daughter now reside. I currently live in the Finger Lakes region of New York with my sexy hero, our handsome son, and a pile of lazy dogs and ferocious cats. I enjoy a plethora of hobbies including but not limited to attending concerts, hiking and cycling, cooking, and gardening. I love to dance, to dress up, and I'll go just about anywhere a good time can be had.

I've built a satisfying career as an English professor at a small, rural community college, and now I'm also writing and publishing romance. I've finished and sold a few contemporary titles, and I'm working on perfecting a Tudor historical, and penning a modern day romantic suspense. I plan to spend the rest of my life reading and writing in my little cabin in the woods.

My biggest wish is that each of my readers will be inspired to believe in and find their own happily-ever-after.

"One Wet Summer" by Ann Montclair

My Book Summary : Ben was living the playboy lifestyle up until his ex-wife died leaving his five-year-old daughter to him to solely raise while trying to keep running his successful hotel. Now two years later Ben has created a loving structured life for his daughter. It's a life he's happy with even though during those two years he hasn't dated anyone he hasn't really wanted to date anyone either. That is until he meets Maura ...

Maura is staying two weeks at Ben's hotel as a gift from her parents and she plans to enjoy every minute of it! And after she meets Ben, their attraction is undeniable, her trip is looking even better! However, because Ben has been use to keeping everyone at arms length (except his daughter) during these past two years their relationship goes back-and-forth between moving at a rapid-pace to them slowing everything down and being unsure of the relationship between them.

Will everything work out for them, leaving them to realize that they are meant to be together? Or will they come to the conclusion that they can't put their hearts on the line for love?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. Love finds a way of proving that everything you thought you wanted out of life is wrong and can usually turn out even better if only you'll allow it to! I loved Jessie!! She sounded adorable and mature beyond her years (after everything she went through). Maura and Ben have their moments when they are great characters and moments when you just want to smack them. With that being said, I enjoyed the plot and the intrigue that surrounds this book. It did made me wish that all of them (Maura, Ben, & Jessie) would get their happily-ever-after. =0)

I recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a good contemporary romance novel!!

Book Teaser(s) :
Teaser #1 ~ within Chapter 1
“Let’s not talk about your leaving when you’ve just arrived. You’re staying two whole weeks, and I plan to monopolize every single second, if you’ll allow me.” He realized how much he meant the words. Maura made him feel like he was a man with a future instead of only a past. And the scent of her velvety skin and the heat of her body tucked up tight to his reminded him he was not just a father, but a red-blooded man.
“Well, if you insist...” She tapped him playfully on his chin.
“I do insist, as long as I’m not intruding on your good time.” He moved his chin aside and air-bit at her finger.
“You are my good time,” she said, and her voice lowered huskily.
He caught her palm, laid it against his cheek, and said, “You’re mine, too.” ~ within Chapter 7

Book Excerpt :

Maura had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Why not? What was she here for? Fun. And escape from the responsibilities of catering to children. This man looked like more fun than she had ever had, and Savannah was certainly an escape from the confines of her seventh grade classroom at Atlanta Mills Middle School. Ms. Fields was just Maura today, and damn, it felt good.

“My name is Maura Fields,” she said, and she giggled as his lips pursed—as if he were tasting her name and found he liked its flavor. “Maura Fields: single woman, no complications. Are you married, encumbered in any way? I hate to be so blunt, Ben, but I am a woman alone on vacation, and I don’t want to find myself taken advantage of, even by someone as beguiling as you.”

He looked taken aback as his blue eyes rounded and one eyebrow arched. “Ms. Fields, I am not married. Does that make you feel more at ease with my invitation?”

“Why, yes, it does!” she couldn’t help but exclaim.

“So, I will see you at four, ready to swim?” he inquired again, but this time it sounded like a statement, a predetermined actuality. Maura liked an assertive man, especially one so dapper. She nodded her head affirmatively, not trusting herself to make a dignified sound.

Ben bowed slightly and slowly raked his brilliant eyes over her body, toe to top. With an appreciative smile playing about his sexy mouth, he said, “Maura, you’re the best thing that has happened around this old place in a very long time.”

    Book Excerpt :
Olivia reached up, feeling the tender spots on her head. Her fingers brushed across a row of—were those little ridges made of metal?
“Careful. The staples are almost ready to come out, but it’s still going to be sore for a while.”
Staples?! Her stomach rolled. I have staples in my head? She lowered her now-shaking hand. “Can I get a mirror?”
Mom looked at Dad, then back at her. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. Not until you’ve healed a little more.”
Mom patted Olivia’s leg. “You just relax. We’ll be back in a few minutes.”
The two of them left the room, but when Mom swung the door closed, it didn’t latch. Olivia could hear their voices in the hall.
“I still think we should...” She couldn’t make out the rest of Dad’s muffled words. “...know if I can do this.”
“...late for that,” Mom said. “We’d lose everything, including...” Her voice faded as they got farther away. “...have to move.”
Olivia could tell the conversation was tense, but the words were impossible to decipher now. Holding a hand in front of her face, she turned it back and forth. A plastic tube ran from her arm to a machine next to her bed. She peeked into her nightgown and stared in horror at the long red stripe running down her chest.
      Sick.
You’re alive. You shouldn’t be thinking about looks.
Lowering her hand, she scanned the room. I wonder how my face looks. From the way Dad stared at me, plus the fact Mom won’t let me see a mirror, it must be bad.
Brains are more important than looks.
      That’s what ugly people say.
Olivia put her hands on her head and squeezed. “Stop it,” she whispered to her arguing thoughts, hysteria bubbling up and squeezing the air from her lungs. What was happening to her? Why didn’t she recognize her parents or know where she was? Who she was? Tears ran warm trails down her cheeks. “Just make it all stop.”

    About the Author :
Cindi Madsen sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a new pretty pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music, dancing, and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children.

"A Callahan Wedding" [Callahan Cowboys Series, Book 6] by Tina Leonard

    Author's Book Description : “Holy Smokes. I’m A Father.”

Sabrina McKinley broke Jonas’s heart when she left him for another man. Then the eldest Callahan brother gets the surprise of his life when he sees her again...holding his son. Even at six months, his bouncing baby boy was wearing the legendary Callahan smile!

Which means Sabrina has got to marry him, even if Jonas has to drag her to the altar.

Sabrina’s been head over heels for the hunky cowboy doctor since the day she first came to Rancho Diablo; it’s always been Jonas Keeping her at arm’s length. She won’t settle for anything less than the real deal–the love and happiness that Jonas’s five brothers have found.

But when a revelation about a family secret comes out, Sabrina can see Jonas is ready to look toward the future. He won’t be the last bachelor on the ranch. After all, he’s a Callahan!

My Book Review : 2 out of 5 stars. I'm sorry but by Chapter 4 (24% of the book or so my Kindle said) in this book I just could not finish reading anymore of it. I couldn't put up with finishing this book because...

    • For one I haven't read any other books from this series so it bounced around a little too much for me to follow the plot.

    • Another thing is Jonas (the hero in this novel) was really whiny and not much of a lead character during the parts I did read.

Otherwise .... I think this book had potential so if you do decide to read it then .. Good luck and I hope you'll enjoy it more than me.

    Book Teaser(s) :
Jonas was satisfied with his non-emotional approach to his chosen lady. "How would Sabrina know what I need to do to make myself into a good life partner?"
"Well, you ran off and got engaged to a woman you didn't love because the woman you did love was pregnant with your child. Call me crazy, but you may have some issues to iron out, bro."
He scowled. ~ within Chapter 3

Feasted On: Portals of Destiny Tales, Book 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 481 KB | Release Date: April 2012 | Publisher: Digital Crystal Press | Obtained: Book Lovers’ Buffet & Amazon.com

"Dragon Rider's Gift" [Portals of Destiny Tales, Book 1] by K. H. LeMoyne

My Book Summary : Roark was a solider for a long time until he heard rumors of the possibility of an attack to their kingdom. He goes on a quest in search of an ancient red dragon (Kraz) he heard of being captured, so he can free him in hopes they'll bond and the dragon will help in protecting everything in the kingdom. However, convincing Kraz that bonding together and getting involved in Roark's plans are harder than he originally thought. Yet in the end, they head toward the King and the castle to share their knowledge and become a part of the King's dragon guard.

Everything seems to fall into place for them when it comes to protecting the kingdom. However, Roark never expected on losing his heart in the process to Princess Nira. Three souls. Two hearts. And a bond that links them all. Can they find a way to protect each other and the kingdom before an evil mage comes for them all?

My Book Review : 4.5 out of 5 stars. "Three souls. Two hearts. And a bond that links them all." is how this novel is best described! I LOVED the characters!! Kraz is an egotistical dragon who put humor throughout this novel! While Roark & Nira have chemistry that flies off the page and wouldn't slow down! Then to top it off the plot was fast-paced and made me not want to put it down!! Wonderful!

I hope that there will be a story about Lord Joach since he went from being the most hated character to one of my favorite characters in the novel! Plus, there were quite a few other secondary characters that were enticing too (like Nira's bodyguard, Aegon).

I highly recommend this novel to anyone who likes paranormal romances that have a lot of action and a bit of erotica in them!!

    Book Teaser(s) :
One large spin presented him a view of land in place of air, his eardrums thrumming as gravity pulled at his head instead of his feet. He didn’t bother to hold in his whoop and laughed as Kraz roared and released a fire plume as they cut along the currents.
A good day to fly with the gods, Rider.
Aye, my friend. A good day indeed.
Friend. Don’t mistake me for friend, Rider.
If I am to trust you with my life, beast, then you will be either friend or foe. I have few of either, so consider yourself precious as a friend.
    Hmm...yes. Precious I am. ~ within Chapter 2
Roark stood, watching his pitiful path up the cavern stairway and his retreat into the tunnel. He is not my favorite, by any means. But it takes strength to realize one’s failings and make reparation. He’s at an impasse. If he chooses wisely, he’ll be a man worthy of respect.
He handled our princess in a manner unworthy of a rider. You should have ground him to dust.
Her wish was to grant him a chance to make amends. She is our liege. However, Roark had wanted to crush Joach after his cruel assault on Nira’s innocent nature. She did not want him humiliated and sees worth where others might not.
Hmm, dragons do not juggle these needless emotions. We don’t debate right and wrong. We protect our hoard and annihilate threats.
That is what makes you a warrior and my lady a future queen, Roark countered. Our lady.
Roark bent his head with a chuckle. Our queen—my lady. ~ within Chapter 13

  • "One Wet Summer" by Ann Montclair

    Book Teaser:
The little girl stuck her tongue out at him and flipped away like a dolphin, swimming with sure strokes to the shallow end. Maura swam in her wake and met her at the pool stairs.
“You should say thank you to the lifeguard,” she said, as the little girl’s pink, sparkly, swimsuited bottom flounced up the steps in front of her. “He was trying to help, you know.”
“Oh, you’d think he’d have figured it out by now. I play that game nearly every day. It’s fun to float and hold my breath as long as possible. I don’t know why it freaks everyone out.” She sounded dramatically exasperated and Maura couldn’t help but laugh at the child’s adult tone.
The little girl smiled up into Maura’s face, and continued. “You swim fast, lady. No one has ever beat Fred before.”
“So, you pull this trick often, eh?” Maura tried not to sound too impressed. “I bet only the new guests give you that satisfying scream, huh?”
“Yep,” the little girl agreed, twisting her long dark hair around one of her dimpled fingers. ~ within Chapter 1

"Anything You Want" [Anything & Everything Series, Book 1] by Erin Nicholas

My Book Summary : Sabrina (Seattle - Marc's nickname for her) has always been close to Luke ever since she was 13 years old and he protected her from her father's overbearing ways. Since that day on, he has been her hero, her best friend, her safety net, the person she always called when she desperately needed something. At least that was until 4 years ago when she tried to take their relationship to the next level (from friends to lovers) and found out that even though she truly cared for Luke she just couldn't settle into the lifestyle he wanted. Therefore, she left for Seattle and never looked back (for the most part)....

Now it's 4 years later, her dreams of being a famous singer still have not come true, she's broke because someone recently stole all of her money, and is .... pregnant! On her way back to her hometown, her car brakes down and she's stranded with nowhere to go and no one to call but Luke. However, Luke isn't the one who comes to rescue her ... Marc does.

When Marc was in 5th Grade, his family died in a car accident and Luke and Luke's family were kind enough to take him in and adopt him. Ever since then he has loved them and would do anything to protect them. Even if that means stepping in and keeping Sabrina away from Luke, so she cannot break his heart again. Now if only he can try to protect himself and his heart from Sabrina too...

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars, this is a story of finding one's true passion, of overcoming one's fears, and fulfilling those dreams! I really loved the characters!! Sabrina/Seattle is clever, funny, smart-mouthed, and witty while being a passionate singer. Marc is protective, creative, amusing, cocky, flirtatious, and dynamic while being a passionate chef. Together they are the perfect duo to keep each other on their toes while being very supportive of each other’s dreams.

With that being said, I was very annoyed with how Sabrina kept falling back on Luke. I mean I understand that that was the whole point of the plot but it's like as soon as she gets around Luke she second-guesses her choices and wants making her seem like she looses her backbone altogether. This is why I loved her with Marc because they played off each other well. In addition, when they were together it's the only time that Sabrina made any real choices that worked well for her and were "smart" choices.

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes to read a good contemporary romance that has a little comedy thrown in!

    “Heat rash?”
Marc was an intelligent guy but sometimes she wondered how he’d managed to obtain his Master’s degree.
“I have heat rash from where the denim of my shorts rubbed on the back and inside of my thighs as I walked down the highway in eighty-seven degree heat, looking for a service station for my damned car.”
He stared at her for a full ten seconds. Then his eyes dropped to her thighs. He stared harder, seeming puzzled.
    “What?” she finally demanded.
    “How’d I miss that?”
    “Excuse me?”
“You were standing there in your panties and I thought I looked you over pretty good.”
