Today I'm turning my blog over to Nicole MacDonald, who I interviewed about her novel "The Arrival," which is the 1st book her BirthRight Trilogy!!

My Q&A with Nicole MacDonald :

Jess : Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Nicole : I am thirty year old kiwi (New Zealander) who works fulltime as a receptionist while moonlighting as a novelist. I live in a small town in Wellington that’s surrounded by rolling green hills and forest, with my partner and our dog and cat.

Jess : Which of your characters would you most & least to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Nicole : Most – Elena, the sorceress of Elion. She is one who has lived centuries and seen so many things and she knows almost everyone of interest on Gar’nyse. There are so many things I’d love to know!

Least – Jenviet, the sorceress of the South. A woman hell bent on achieving her family desire of world domination. She gets a distinct pleasure from breaking anyone who opposes her.

Jess : Please describe "The Arrival" in 50 words or less.

Nicole : A kick-ass story about four good friends fighting for their lives, love and the new world they’ve arrived on.

Jess : What sparked the idea for your BirthRight Trilogy?

Nicole : A fantastic thunderstorm over the Wellington harbor. I’ve always loved thunderstorms and it just sparked the first idea of a fight scene.

Jess : Please describe Catherine, Sian, Kassandra, & Laura, from "The Arrival," in one to two sentences each.

Nicole : Catherine is a redhead who loves her friends dearly. She likes teasing boys but doesn’t fully believe in ‘true love’ and enjoys her solitude.

Kassandra is the oldest of the friends and an absolute sweetheart. Always there for her friends when needed.

Sian is the petite but formidable blond of the group. She loves to play up her tiny stature and then shock the heck out of people.

Loi is the youngest but tallest of the group and can seem rather shy to an outsider. She takes a bit to warm to people, but once you’re a friend she’ll defend you with her life.

Jess : If "The Arrival" were to be made into a film, who do you see playing the leading male characters in your trilogy and why?

Nicole : I can really only go on looks alone so:
For Alek—Sean Faris—he has the dark hair, height and blue eyes.

For Sabyn—Chris Hemsworth—the right sort of brooding look

For Daron—Dwayne Johnson—I love the ‘intense’ frown he has and the cheesy grin.

For Rumal—Tyrese Gibson—The gorgeous dark skin and piercing gaze.

For Gredel—Dash Mihok—the ruddy complexion and understated good looks.

Jess : Out of all of the secondary characters within your BirthRight Trilogy, do you have one or two favorites so far? If so, who are they and can you tell us why?

Nicole : I love Ada, probably because she is directly inspired by my grandmother who I very much adore in real life. In reality my nana didn’t have the easiest life and with Ada I’m able, in a sense, to give her the life I know she would have loved.
And then there are too many other characters I like to choose!

Jess : What is the most romantic thing one of your characters, from "The Arrival," said or did?

Nicole : Oooo.. that’s tricky. Everyone has such different thoughts on romance. I do love the part where Rumal comforts Kassie when she cries. It’s the little gestures that can mean so much.

Jess : In regards to "The Arrival," if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Nicole : I would be tempted to make it a little darker. But now, having written the third, I look on the whole trilogy like a relationship. "The Arrival" is the fluffy joyful first part where all is so bright and exciting! "Awakening" is the part of a relationship where you start to realize that even love isn’t ‘perfect’ and the third book, "Feel the Burn," is the time when you have to fight for it, to prove the worth both to yourself and everyone else. The hard part that once you succeed, you know the relationship can survive anything.

Jess : What appeals to you when writing a romance novel?

Nicole : *lol* Oh shucks ;p I blush, I cry, I get frisky (partner likes that part). I rave and rant and get ridiculously emotional. It’s a horrible, intense and absolutely joyful experience, just like any good romance.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Nicole : Three. And possible "Feel the Burn," because it’s the last. But I love each book for it’s own distinct flavor.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Nicole : I’m working on a dystopian steampunk that was inspired by a crazy dream I had. I can’t reveal much yet because I’m still figuring out the plot!

Jess : Have you ever gone out in public with your shirt on backwards, or your slippers on, and when realizing it, just said screw it?

Nicole : Frequently. I do the absent minded thing all too often. Shirt buttoned on inside out (wondered why the buttons seemed weird) forgetting to zip my skirt up so flashing my underwear and once, glancing down to spot yesterday’s stockings hanging off the bottom of my trousers *lol*.

Jess : If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Nicole : "Blazing your own trail with burnt fingers."

Jess : List 3 books you just recently read and would recommend?

Nicole : "Queen of kings" – YES!
"The Other Boleyn Girl" – YES!
"Fifty Shades" - No. No. No. *shudder* So far from my version of romance.

"The Arrival" [The BirthRight Trilogy, Book 1] by Nicole MacDonald

My Book Summary : Four best friends cast what they believe to be a simple love spell that doesn't turn out to be simple, or even ordinary, at all! Especially when they conclude that they've been sent to another planet, now knowing they'll never see their families again, finding that they now have their own set of magical powers, and are asked to help out in a war that they aren't sure they want to be a part of.

If only they could just follow their hearts and have a fairytale life that they've always dreamed but they are coming to realize that everything comes with a price, the question is how much are they willing to pay?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! This world-win trilogy beginning keeps you on your toes while emerging you into a culture that is so like our own in many ways yet has a magical and mystical feel to it that delights your senses! I loved how this novel builds you up for what is to come throughout this series. However, it did take me some time to get used to how the author liked to switch her POVs, since it flowed well for everyone but when she was talking from Catherine's (Cat) POV and only because she usually used more "I" sentences with her then anything. For example, (the first two sentences are from Laura's--Loi--POV while the last five sentences are from Cat's POV):

Loi could see Kassie was ready to explode. Opening her mouth to tell her to calm down Loi froze when she noticed her clothes, “Guys, where are our costumes?”
After an initial panicked thought of ‘WHAT! I’M NAKED?’ I realised I did have clothes on. But they weren’t mine. There were sounds of astonishment as we stared at our ‘new’ outfits. It was kind of similar to my costume. ~ within Chapter 3

Nevertheless, all of the characters are great to read about, especially with their diverse personalities! However, if I had to choose I would say my favorite is Kassandra (Kassie) & Rumal! They just seem so cute together! Plus, I LOVED Audrey (Audi) Cat's dog! *hehee* She livened up the novel with her playfulness and antics!

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes sci-fi-ish fantasy romances!

“What happened?” She sounded confused and had one hand pressed to her head.
“The tehnear lunged at us and you,” Alek’s mind warned him against mentioning the energy pulse. “You clipped your head when I pushed you out the way, I’m so sorry!”
I turned to face him, my hands on his knees to hold myself steady and looked into his eyes. They were sincere though guarded. “Don’t apologise.” I smiled at him, “You saved me.”
Alek stared back at me; an indecipherable expression on his face then lifted a hand and gently cupped my face. He pulled me close and pressed his lips to mine.
He felt Cat jolt in shock then relax and sink into his embrace. Alek wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her in and slid his other hand under her hair. He’d never found himself so aroused from such a simple kiss. She sighed against his lips and he deepened the kiss, wanting more.
‘Errrr, do you think you could do that somewhere private?’ Loushka’s voice came into his mind, she sounded amused.
Alek jerked back from me and flushed red. ~ within Chapter 13

Book Excerpt :

The track quickly led to the river and I dropped my stuff near the edge. Kneeling, I dunked my top in the water and scrubbed it full of soap. I heard some splashes and smiled.

Audi’s such a water baby and as long as it was by choice, rather than me giving her a bath, she would swim anywhere. It sounds like she's having fun. I swished the top under the water, rinsing the soap out. The splashes sounded closer and I glanced up.

Alek stood in the middle of the river, the water lapping mid thigh on him.

I froze.

He was magnificent. The water cascaded down his taut, muscular body, his blue black hair shoved back out of his eyes and his white essentially see-through undergarment.


My jaw dropped. I don’t think I’d ever seen such a fantastic specimen in real life before.

Alek was surprised to see Catherine at the water's edge. He’d thought all the women would have slept for a few more hours, at least. About to call out a greeting, he stopped when he noticed her slack jawed expression.

It was at that point I could suddenly make out the rational voice in my head.

It was screaming; STOP STARING, HE’S LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU.

My eyes jerked up to dark blue ones, regarding me in amusement, one eyebrow arched.

OH MY GOD.

And in the manner of any intelligent, attractive, level headed, sensible female who had been caught out...

I promptly blushed beetroot, muttered something unintelligent, snatched my things and bolted for the tent. I hurtled past Daron who was headed toward the river.

• Jaxina (Jax) & Keller [from "Bane" [The Coven Series, Book 2] by Trish Milburn]: A witch and a hunter fall in love, while trying to fight against the evil that is coming after them and hoping that both of them don't get lost during the process.
• Aylia & Nico [from "Wicked Werewolf Night" [The Werewolf Society Series, Book 1] by Lisa Renee Jones]: They are a vibrant duo that made me wish that their story was longer so I could keep reading about them!!!
• Bambi & Trip [from "The Booby Trap" by Anne Browning Walker]: These two discover how a misconception of who you are can really change your life...sometimes all for the better!
• Emme & Jack [from "Taking Up Light" [The Light Ones Series, Book 1] by Holly Lauren]: The growing relationship between these two is HOT and very sweet as they deal with the struggles that get throw their way!

• Hannah, Reed, & Josh [from "Trinity Bound" [Redwood Pack Series, Book 3] by Carrie Ann Ryan]: This dynamic trio encompasses a wonderful chemistry that is combustible and endearing at the same time. So much so, that you root for them throughout this novel.
• Erica & Jeremy [from "Try Me" [Take a Chance Series, Book 1] by Diane Alberts]: These two work through their troubled pasts while creating the life they want to have with each other. I loved Jeremy!!
• Ellie & Clay [from "Love Finds You in Glacier Bay, Alaska" [Love Finds You Series, Book 3] by Tricia Goyer & Ocieanna Fleiss]: Even though these two are secondary characters in the novel their in, their love story is one you read through letters that plays a major role in how much you begin to enjoy how the main story plays out. So very sweet and charming!
• Fiona & Felix [from "Ask Me to Dance" [within Once Upon a Ballroom] by Katharine Ashe]: They make such a cute and sweet pair!
• Kate & Cristiano [from "The Secret She Can't Hide" by India Grey]: Somehow, these two just seem to work together, even though they had to spend four years apart and needed to learn about each other again.
• Caroline & Simon [from "His Secret Temptation" by Cat Schield]: I really enjoyed reading about the banter and sexual tension that goes on between these two.
• Miranda & Chase [from "Bunny And The Bear" [Furry United Coalition (F.U.C.) Series, Book 1] by Eve Langlais]: I loved the quirky relationship between these two!
• Sabrina (Seattle) & Marc [from "Anything You Want" [Anything & Everything Series, Book 1] by Erin Nicholas]: Together they are the perfect duo to keep each other on their toes while being very supportive of each other’s dreams.
• Chantal (Charlie) & Clay [from "All Summer Long" [Fool’s Gold Series, Book 9] by Susan Mallery]: Together or apart, these two were a great duo that I couldn't get enough of! ♥
• Elle & Max [from "Baby Under the Christmas Tree" by Teresa Carpenter]: These two get together by an unlikely circumstance and stay together once they realize they have more in common then they would have ever thought.
• Meara & Finn [from "A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing" [Werewolf Series, Book 9] by Terry Spear]: The chemistry between these two is undeniable--not even Finn's promise to Meara's brother could keep them apart for long!
• Kendra & Deuce [from "The Sins Of His Past" [within Kiss Me, I'm Irish] by Roxanne St. Claire]: I LOVED this couple, they really knew how to get on each other’s nerves, get the other to laugh/smile, and heat each other up too.

• Meg & Caden [from "Captured Heart" [The Highland Hearts Series, Book 1] by Heather McCollum]: Love, battles, secrets, treachery, and special powers -- these two deal with it all and still come out on top!
• Miranda & Damien [from "The Truth About Love" [within Once Upon a Ballroom] by Caroline Linden]: This husband and wife's love for each other can pull through anything!
• Claire & Josh [from "Hollywood Ever After" [The Red-Carpet Series, Book 1] by Sasha Summers]: Their intense Hollywood fairytale is one that keeps you entranced in its fast-paced, heartwarming, and dramatic ways.
• Loraine & Gabriel [from "Love Beyond Loyalty" [The Outsiders Series, Book 3] by Rebecca Royce]: I LOVED Gabriel and Loraine!! Their relationship is just soo sweet and I just couldn't get enough of them!!
• Theodora (Theo/Daisy) & James [from "The Ugly Duchess" [Eloisa's Fairy Tales Series, Book 4] by Eloisa James]: Two friends grow to love and respect each other while they live apart.
• Lillian & Boris [from "Undenied" [Amoveo Legend Series, Book 2.5 / Novella 1] by Sara Humphreys]: These two sweet reclusive people find each other.
• Sarah (Sally) & Colyear (Col) [from "Almost a Scandal" [The Reckless Brides Series, Book 1] by Elizabeth Essex]: I loved how their novel evolves--from Sally boarding the ship trying to hide her identity, to her being in the thick of the crew, getting into fights about shipmates treatment, to the growing love affair between Sally and Col all the while being right in the middle of a war! ♥
• Elsa & Quinn [from "Fortune's Hero" [Soldiers of Fortune Series, Book 1] by Jenna Bennett]: These two find love while they deal with escaping sadistic doctors and evil commanders.
• Elizabeth (Libby) & Anthony (Tony) [from "Her Best Friend's Brother" by T. J. Dell]: I LOVED these two! Their novel proves that if you truly love someone it's hard to let them go for good.
• Juliet & Gareth [from "The Wild One" [The de Montforte Brothers Series, Book 1] by Danelle Harmon]: I really liked the easy relationship/banter between these two! They were perfect for each other and setup a wonderful beginning to this series!!
• MaKayla & Dustin [from "The Patriot Girl" [The No Bulls Series, Book 1] by Toni Lynn Cloutier]: I thoroughly enjoyed the chemistry and relationship between these two!! It's as if they were made for each other!
• Josie & Bane [from "Lust After Death" [Love-Bots Series, Book 1] by Daisy Harris]: A zombie-ish love that holds no bounds!
• Katrina & Tyler [from "Omegas In Love" [The Vanguards Series, Book 4] by Annie Nicholas]: They are such a sweet couple it was great reading about how they finally come together for good after taking care of issues from Katrina's past.
• Allarie (Al) & Dailey [from "Cracked" by Tara Logan]: These two make a cute couple, who play off each other well even though they seem to be complete opposites.
• Nicole & Ty [from "Tangling with Ty" [within Kiss Me, I'm Irish] by Jill Shalvis]: They are a perfect combo of being similar enough to each other to understand one another and be okay with their rough spots, and being different enough that they intrigue each other in a way that cannot be ignored.
• Finley & Beckett [from "There You’ll Find Me" by Jenny B. Jones]: I especially liked the relationship between this couple, it was sweet, funny (with all of their bickering and unusual ways of talking to each other), and because of the way they go about helping each other it really made me enjoy this novel so much more!!! ♥
• Hannah & Jackson [from "The Billionaire's Christmas Baby" by Victoria James]: She livens up his life while they're trapped at his cabin up north.
• Lana & Andrew (Drew) [from "Miss Hillary Schools a Scoundrel" by Samantha Grace]: Miss Hillary might not be schooling a scoundrel but she certainly did tame one!!
• Chelsea & Eric [from "Dark Wolf Rising" [Bloodrunners Series, Book 4] by Rhyannon Byrd]: They overcome their troubled pasts while creating a better future for those around them and each other.
• Josephine (Josie/Jojo) & Liam [from "Forever My Girl" [The Beaumont Series, Book 1] by Heidi McLaughlin]: They are great together, they complement each other really well, and I thoroughly enjoyed how they worked their conflicts out between them.
• Shelley & Chase [from "Silver Mine" [Takhini Wolves Series, Book 2] by Vivian Arend]: These two are one hot item!!
• Erica & Jamie [from "Aftershocks" [within Romance in the Rain] by Kristine Cayne]: The sparks between these two are combustible!
• Janica & Luke [from "Love Me" [Take Me Series, Book 2] by Bella Andre]: This intense couple, who have loved each other for forever, find out how much they're willing to take on to get what they want!
• Carmen, Don, & Isaac [from "Who's Your Daddy?" by Lauren Gallagher]: Three best friends explore having their relationship grow into something more, while dealing with the unexpected circumstances of that growth.
• Kate & Matt [from "My Stubborn Heart" by Becky Wade]: This couple's story hooked me enough that I finished their, over 300 page, novel in one day! ♥
• Lindy & Owen [from "Wife for Hire" by Christine Bell]: They are one dynamic duo.
• Emma & Connor [from "Whatever Reilly Wants..." [within Kiss Me, I'm Irish] by Maureen Child]: I really liked the relationship between these two, plus their flirty conversations and steamy sex scenes are hot enough to keep you interested!
• Nira & Roark [from "Dragon Rider's Gift" [Portals of Destiny Tales, Book 1] by K. H. LeMoyne]: I LOVED this couple and the other characters in their novel!! Kraz is an egotistical dragon who put humor throughout this novel! While Roark & Nira have chemistry that flies off the page and wouldn't slow down!
• Ashe & Raphael [from "Raphael" [Bayou Heat Series, Book 1] by Alexandra Ivy]: They have an unusual start because Raphael's people try to keep themselves hidden, but once they meet the second time it's hard to keep them apart for good.
• Morgeanna (Morgan) & Derek [from "Return of the Rose" by Theresa Ragan]: I LOVED their novel's plot---from the whole thing about the Earl sending his daughter away with hopes of her getting better and returning to Morgan finding herself in a world she's not familiar with and learning the ropes to the epic love between this couple---it was just soo good!!!
• Annabel & Sebastian [from "Ten Things I Love About You" [The Bevelstoke Series, Book 3] by Julia Quinn]: They were a joy to read about, especially in their scenes together, along with Sebastian's creative views when it comes to his writing!
• Fredricka (Fred) & Ryan [from "Hooked" [Hooked Series, Book 1] by Liz Fichera]: These two have more in common than anyone would like to believe, but the attraction between them is undeniable. They hooked me to root for them the whole way through this novel!! ♥
• Ashley & Luke [from "Love ‘em or Leave ‘em" by Angie Stanton]: I loved the chemistry that constantly sparks between these two!
• Azurha & Titus [from "Tangled Web" [The Deizian Empire Series, Book 1] by Crista McHugh]: A deadly assassin falls in love with her target.
• Chloe & Mark [from "Masks" by Evangeline Anderson]: While in disguise these two fall head over heels in love and in bed!
• Angela & Lucen [from "Angel All Year" by Sally Clements]: It was such a heartwarming tale that you couldn't help but root for them!
• Sonnet & Zach [from "Return to Willow Lake" [The Lakeshore Chronicles, Book 9] by Susan Wiggs]: Best friend's relationship grows into something more while they get over their differences.
• Myka & Eron (Spike) [from "Hard Mated" [Shifters Unbound Series, Book 3.5] by Jennifer Ashley]: Finding the one you love, while learning you have a son too. These two are the perfect counter parts for each other.
• Hailey, Mark, & Tony [from "Sharing Hailey" by Samantha Ann King]: I loved the relationship and love that Hailey shares with Mark & Tony! Especially since, they've found a way to make them all happy without hurting their friendships with each other.
• Franny & Charlie [from "A Merry Little Christmas" by Anita Higman]: They are a sweet couple who only want to accomplish their dreams, but they find that their dreams change the longer they spend together.

• Avondia (Ava) & Daxtronian (Dax) [from "Virgin" [The Cat Star Chronicles, Book 7] by Cheryl Brooks]: Dax isn't the type to romance a lady but once he meets Ava he does a good job sweeping her off her feet while she teaches Dax that there are more adventures to see if you’re willing to search beneath the surface.
• Reece & Dante [from "Dante's Girl" [The Paradise Diaries Series, Book 1] by Courtney Cole]: They are such a sweet couple! You can't help but root for them.
• Devon & Andre [from "Silver Storm" [Raveneau Series, Book 1] by Cynthia Wright]: These two stubborn people make a fiery couple that you want to root for even when they are being dumb. =0)
• Raina & Slade [from "The Half-Breed Vampire" [Sons of Midnight Mini-Series, Book 3] by Theresa Meyers]: I really enjoyed reading about the relationship that grew between this couple, along with all of the back-story that was in their novel.
• Gemma & Trace [from "Just a Cowboy and His Baby" [Spikes & Spurs Series, Book 6] by Carolyn Brown]: These two are in a competition of their lives, only have each other to lean on, and when Trace's past catches up to him they'll need each other more than ever.

My Book Summary : Cinderella lands a Prince after all!!

Cinderella (Ella) has had to put up with people judging her all of her life because of her family, especially because of her father, but when she over hears Hassan (the Sheikh of Kashamak) saying judgmental and rude things about everyone in her family (and her by association) she gets mad. So mad that when she first notices him on the dance floor afterwards all she wants to do is punch him despite his authority and sexiness. Therefore, it's not totally surprising that not long after they meet, even though Ella does get swept away in his arms for a time, she tosses a glass of champagne in his face.

After that, all bets are off between them as their anger and sexual frustration turn to an all time high, leaving them both with a little surprise and many complications...

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars--two people deal with unexpected circumstances while overcoming personal issues of their own. I really liked how this novel went about bring these two together and then how they find ways to choose to stay together despite everything. The last chapter was great in wrapping everything up!

However, I am curious as to what happened to Hassan's brother, mostly because it was mentioned so much in the novel of Hassan wondering what happened to him yet it was never answered.

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes dramatic contemporary romances!

However, when spending one-on-one time with the band and Emerson, Alicia finds her suspicions about Emerson's relationship with Vince confirmed, they are in love with each other but don't know how to acknowledge it to each other more than just friendship. Now Alicia feels like it's her responsibility to bring these two together for good. Yet in doing so will she ruin her own growing relationships with them or will they all be thrown by the new opportunities that now present themselves to them?

My Book Review : 4.5 out of 5 stars!! Two best friends learn the depth of their friendship and love while opening up their hearts to someone else and something new. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel with its hot hard rock male leads to its unexpected paranormal twists. In addition, it keeps you on your toes with its hot, spicy, and erotic sex scenes! I loved reading about how the relationship between these three bloomed into something special for all three of them.

I just wish there was more to read about! I recommend this novel to anyone who likes ménage, M/M/F and/or M/M romances. Especially ménage romances involving werewolves.
