Feasted On: When In Texas by Lynda Simmons | #BookReview @LyndaMSimmons
"When In Texas" [Blame it on Texas Series] by Lynda Simmons
Author's Book Description : Jenna Scott loves the open road, solo camping and feeding people. A self-taught chef and lifelong vegetarian, she can’t wait to open her first restaurant and prove that you can make friends with salad. But in Clifton Texas?
Rancher and retailer, Alex Barclay, knows Texans live for steak and brisket. But kale and quinoa? Not so much. While the vegetarian is about as cute as a woman can get, she’s also more than naïve about her business prospects in Clifton. But she has the right to fail anywhere she likes.
The town’s elder statesman disagrees. As far as he’s concerned, Jenna is the next natural disaster to hit cattle country. An insult to ranchers and a menace to the Texas economy.
When he takes a hard line against Jenna, refusing to rent her the space they agreed upon, Jenna is left with spoiling supplies, broken dreams and nowhere to go. Alex’s sense of fair play won’t let him stand back and do nothing. His brother runs a café inside Alex’s store, a space which will be empty for two more weeks until his brother gets back from France. Knowing it will turn a lot of folks against him, Alex offers to let Jenna open a pop-up restaurant in the café anyway. Two weeks to prove that statesman wrong. To show the town that kale and quinoa can indeed live happily ever after with steak and brisket.
Jenna can either accept Alex’s help or get back in her camper and drive, letting that narrow-minded statesman win. A pop-up isn’t what she planned, but Jenna has never been the type to back down from a fight. And for the first time since she can remember, the open road is not as appealing as the cowboy who wants her to stay.
* The Blame it on Texas Series is a Kindle Worlds series based in the universe of Carolyn Brown's "Long, Hot Texas Summer" and "Daisies in the Canyon."

"Twice a Texas Bride" [Bachelors of Battle Creek Series, Book 2] by Linda Broday
Authors' Book Description : Scars of the past run deep inside former saloon owner Rand Sinclair, leaving jagged pain and two certainties. He’ll never fall in love again. Never marry.
He finally has the ranch and land he’s dreamed of owning and that’s enough. But when he finds a woman and little boy hiding in one of his outbuildings in the bitter cold, he can’t turn his back. He offers her a safe haven and the warmth of his fire.
Callie Quinn is on the run from a killer outlaw who has vowed to see her dead and take the boy. Slowly, Rand uncovers her secrets and realizes the only way to keep her safe is to push all his chips to the center of the table.
He risks everything…his name…and his heart…for the woman who’s awakened a fierce hunger for love.
Locked in a desperate battle to rid themselves of the outlaw’s special brand of terror, Rand reaches deep inside for every weapon in his arsenal.
Whoever wanted to harm her would have to go through him.
…And he’d go through hell for her.
My Book Review : DNF. Okay, while I LOVED "Texas Mail Order Bride" I struggled with this novel. It wasn't because I didn't like the characters or the setting because I tremendously did. It was because once I put the book down to deal with everyday life, I never felt the urge to get back to it and read more. I wasn't hooked and so I gave up around 30% of the way into it.
Nevertheless, because I LOVED "Texas Mail Order Bride" (Book 1 of this series) so much I still do recommend this novel to those who have read book 1, since you get updated all a bunch of previous characters and submerged into new ones ... you may just be hooked more than I was.
Good luck!

- Emma & Jay [from "A Wedding at the Orange Blossom Inn" [Amish Brides of Pinecraft Series, Book 3] by Shelley Shepard Gray]: Their relationship grows quickly in this novel but I love how it was all handled and the calming effect they have for one another. The love that they show for one another and their unique situation kept reminding me of the 1968 version of “Yours, Mine, and Ours,” even though there is a lot more children in the movie.
- Grace & Oliver (Earl of Carlisle) [from "The Earl’s Defiant Wallflower" [Dukes of War Series, Book 1] by Erica Ridley]: They make quite a pair as they fumble through Society hoping to help one another out while hoping for the best. - Sam (Samantha) & Kevin [from "Crossing Lines" [Heat Wave Series, Book 3] by Alannah Lynne]: Kevin & Sam were great together, definitely a perfect pair despite how they got together.
- Ellie & Alek [from "Carrying the Greek's Heir" [One Night With Consequences Series, Book 8] by Sharon Kendrick]: I really liked was how Alek and Ellie come together in their relationship. It was sweet, dramatic, and well plotted out.
- Jessica (Jess) & Zane [from "Her Forbidden Cowboy" [Moonlight Beach Bachelors Series, Book 1] by Charlene Sands]: They are quite the pair. I can’t picture them with anyone else...Their novel hits a homerun on many levels! ♥
- Emily & August [from "The Evolution of Emily" [Kennedy High Series, Book 2] by Kate Scott]: The chemistry between August and Emily is off the charts!
- Jasmine (Princess), R. D., & Logan [from "Her Stepbrothers’ Demands" by Trinity Blacio]: Together this triad was one that captivated me in the way they go about joining and dealing with threats against them.
- Paige & Archer [from "Hunting a Mate" [Quick & Furry Series, Book 6] by Celia Kyle & Mina Carter]: They were a great couple! Archer is supportive of Paige’s “incidents” while Paige was adorable as she grew into her confidence around him.
- Kim & Lucas [from "Falling for the Firefighter" [Taming the Alpha Anthology, Novella 7] & [Hot Zone Anthology] by Shelli Stevens]: I liked their whirlwind romance!
- Gianna (Gia / Georgianna), Cris (Cristobal) & Cai (Mordecai) [from "The Witch’s Champions" by Honoria Ravena]: I would love to read more about this entertaining trio.
- Caelen & Dare [from "Charm School After Dark: Lesson 1" [Charm School Series, Book 1] by Lynn Carmer]: I really liked how Caelen and Dare come to terms with their attraction and get together. Then to top it off with the way Caelen tries to find her balance with him and how Dare deals with her eccentricities, it made me want to root for their relationship even more.

Book Excerpt :
Rayna sat up, pushed back her cloud of russet hair, and got up from the bunk in Brett’s jail cell. It was then he saw that she wore a heavy pair of men’s brogans. What on earth! The shoes looked as though they might’ve come off a very poor dead man.
Her dirty dress had been mended so many times it looked like a patchwork quilt with none of the squares matching. But she seemed so spirited, so brave.
If society had ever allowed him to take a wife, he’d want someone like her. He hated to think he’d have spent all his life never knowing what it could be like to be happy like his brothers now were. While he waited to die, maybe they could pretend.
Maybe he could know what it was like to be loved.
Until they led him through those doors to a hangman, maybe he could have the bride prejudice had denied him. The bold notion made ripples dance under his skin.
Brett raised to a sitting position, ignoring the pain shooting through his back. “This may sound crazy, but I’m going to ask anyway. Rayna, do you think you could pretend to be my wife? Just until they take me away? No one will ever know but us, so they can’t hurt you.”
Turning, she dropped down beside him. Surprised tears bubbled in her eyes. “No one ever asked me to marry them before.”
“Is that a no?”
“I’d be honored to be your pretend wife,” she whispered, brushing his face with her fingers. “What do we do now?”
“Do you mind if I kiss you?”
“I’d like that…husband.”
Under her bright gaze, he lowered his head. But before their lips touched, the sound of a key grating in the lock made him jerk back. “Quick, go to your cell before they catch you with me.”
Rayna scurried into hers and quietly eased the door shut.
Just then a deputy sauntered in, taking care to keep his distance from Brett’s cell. “You alive, breed?”
Brett glared. “Disappointed?”
The deputy—a squat man who reminded Brett of a possum with little weasel eyes, grunted, shifting his gaze to Rayna. “Give any thought to my offer, woman?”
No one had to spell out what the deputy meant. Brett sought to tamp down his rising anger. He watched Rayna tilt her head at a defiant angle.
“The answer is the same as all the other times.”
The weasel shrugged and went back out. The minute the door locked shut, Rayna slowly walked into Brett’s cell and sat down beside him again. “I wish I could see the sky and smell the fresh air.”
“How long have you been in here?”
“Over a month, I think. With each sunrise I’ve been making a mark on the wall. The one today makes thirty-one. But no matter how much I want out, I’m not doing what that deputy wants,” she whispered. “I’ll never be a fine lady, but even I have my dignity. No one will ever take that.”
Though still hesitant, Brett took her small, dainty hand. Her skin shone white against his. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d touched someone who wasn’t family, but his pretend wife was different somehow. “Always stand on your principles. In the end, we still have to live with ourselves, look at our face in the mirror.”

[Bachelors of Battle Creek Trilogy, Book 3] by Linda Broday
Author's Book Description :
- “There’s this thing between us that refuses to die. I’d like nothing better than to be able to…” His words faded. He’d give anything to change people’s views about his race…to be able to make her his wife.
But the world wasn’t that simple. Not for people like them.
She was a pickpocket and he a half-breed.
All his life, Brett Liberty has straddled two worlds: white and Iroquois. The only place he’s truly at peace is with his wild mustangs. But after he’s arrested for the color of his skin, he discovers Rayna Harper in the cell next to him. Rough and tumble Rayna has known little kindness, but Brett sees the depth of her heart hidden beneath layers of hurt and fear, and he refuses to leave without her.
Fierce and loyal, kind and strong, Rayna is everything Brett has ever wanted. But the world doesn’t look kindly on a love like theirs, and he would rather let her go than bring her pain. Yet when the demons of his past threaten her future, Brett realizes he will do anything to keep Rayna safe…and make her his.
