Review: Prom Nights from Hell by Stephenie Meyer, Kim Harrison, Meg Cabot, Lauren Myracle, & Michele Jaffe

Format: Paperback | Pages: 304 | Release Date: April 2007 | Publisher: HarperTeen

"The Exterminator's Daughter" [within Prom Nights from Hell] by Meg Cabot

Pages: 48

My Book Summary : Mary is the daughter of an "exterminator," someone who kills anything that is evil and goes "bump" in the night. However, she never expected to have one of those "things" going after her only friend and she won't let it get away with doing so. So, she plans on killing him before things get worse .... but then .... it get's worse. =0/

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. It was cute. And I really enjoyed reading the story from the different perspectives of Mary & Adam. =0)

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Avalon High | Ready or Not | Victoria and the Rogue

Book Teaser :
"Lila," I snap. "Shut up. Ted's right. You don't even know the guy. Because if you did, you'd never call him gentle."
"But he is," Lila insists, the glitter in her eyes fading to a warm glow. "You don't even know---"
A second later--I'm not even sure how it happened--I have her by the shoulders, and I'm shaking her. She's six inches taller than me and outweighs me by a good forty pounds.
But that doesn't matter. ~ within Chapter 3

"The Corsage" [within Prom Nights from Hell] by Lauren Myracle

Pages: 38

My Book Summary : Frankie and her friends go to a psychic to see what is in store for them. While there, they find out that the psychic is a little--okay really--weird, but before they leave Frankie notices a corsage that she really likes, so she asks about it, then asks if she can have it. The thing though about the corsage is that it’s cursed, and the psychic said that the person who had it before her was able to make three wishes on it, and they all came true ... which makes Frankie want it even more. However, just because the wishes may come true ... still doesn’t mean that they will turn out to be what she wants to happen.

My Book Review : 1 out of 5 stars. In truth I skimmed this one since it really didn't grab my interest at first. However, what I did read of it does make it feel like a scary story .... and not my usual type of reading ... but those who like the "horror" themes might like this one more so then I did.

Book Teaser :
"Is that a skull?" I asked Will.
Will whistled. "Holy cannoli."
"Okey-doke," Yun Sun said, averting her eyes. "If there really is a skull, I don't want to know about it. Can we leave now?"
I took her head in my hands and pointed her in the right direction. "Look. It still has hair!" ~ within the first few pages

"Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper" [within Prom Nights from Hell] by Kim Harrison

Pages: 60

My Book Summary : Madison recently got sent to live with her father and went from being the high school cool girl to her new high school's zero girl. However, she really didn't realize how bad it was until she was at her new schools prom and found out she was there with a guy as a pity date. OUCH! So, when she plans on going home and finds the hot guy wanting to dance with her instead, she plans on making the other guy find out what he missed. But when she gets into this new guy's car, she finds that there might be more going on then what she originally thought.

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars. I really got into this story and now it makes me curious as to what happens within the series that this author has with this character!! Definitely gotta check this one out!

Book Teaser :
Josh was watching me when I glanced up. The guy with him was trying to get his attention, but Josh's eyes were on mine. Mocking me.
That did it. No way was I going to call my dad. And I wasn't getting into a car with Josh, either. I'd walk it. All five miles. In heels. And a long cotton dress. On a damp April night. With my boobs scrunched together. What was the worst that could happen? ~ within Chapter 1
Teaser #2

"Kiss and Tell" [within Prom Nights from Hell] by Michele Jaffe

Pages: 85

My Book Summary : Miranda lives in a boarding school where her only really friend is her roommate Kenzi. But during her days off (Wednesday & Saturday nights) she either is apart of her roller derby team or working at her jobs as a town car driver. However, ever since she was 10 years old, she has been "hiding in plain sight" trying to hide who she really is and her special powers. But when her latest pick-up assignment is a 14-year-old girl and the drop-off location is a bit shady, she can't just leave her there. So, Miranda makes plans to get the girl out of the situation she's in and protect her .... but how can she do that when she has no idea where to take her?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars. This story was about a super-powered girl (kinda like Jamie in 'Being Jamie Baker') who is still coming into her own and trying to do what's right, all without getting caught. It was better then I expected!

Book Teaser :
Miranda agreed to let Sibby order her own at the drive-through, then regretted it when she heard the girl saying to the guy taking the order, "Do I get a discount if I let you kiss me?"
"Okay, seriously, were you raised on Crazycake? Why do you want to kiss all these guys you don't even know?" Miranda asked.
"There aren't many boys where I come from. And what does knowing them have to do with it? Kissing is great. I kissed four boys on the airplane. I'm hoping to make it twenty-five before the end of the day." ~ within Chapter 4

"Hell on Earth" [within Prom Nights from Hell] by Stephenie Meyer

Pages: 53

My Book Summary : It's prom night and it seems that everyone is having a lousy time. What they don't know is that there is a demon amongst them, named Sheba, and has plans to make everyone miserable before the night is through, so she'll be able to become a higher ranking demon. And little does she know that there is one person at the prom who doesn't know what he really is, and that he has the ability to completely throw off her game.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars. Really not what I was expecting from this author but still really good! It would be great if she would write more books about this world, since I would really be interested seeing as to where it could go. =0)

Book Teaser :
"I couldn't say," Gabe admitted. "Have you seen her?"
Logan pursed his full lips for a minute, as if debating whether or not to say something. He ran a hand nervously across his springy black hair. "Well, I thought I did. I'm not exactly sure, though. . . .She's wearing a white dress, right?"
"Yeah---where is she?"
"I think I saw her in the lobby. Can't be positive. Her face was sort of hard to see....David Alvarado's face was all over it...."
"David Alvarado?" Gabe repeated in surprise. "Not Heath McKenzie?" ~ within the only Chapter

"ACCIDENTALLY IN LOVE WITH...A GOD?" [Accidentally Yours Series, Book 1] by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

What was I thinking? : Well, I had just finished "Feral Sins" and because of the star rating I gave that book Amazon.com recommended this book to me. With all of the positive reviews/ratings this book had on Amazon.com I thought this would be an interesting read ... I was sadly mistaken.

My Book Summary : Emma has spent all of her life with a secret friend, a male voice that she has kept quiet, and only she can hear. However, after twenty-two years it's time to part ways between her and Guy (aka the voice). To do so will throw Emma into a dangerous world she's not familiar with, will give her truths about who she really is that she isn't ready for, and will make Emma and Guy both prove to themselves how much each of them can handle. However, when the time comes to each go their own way, will they be able to or want to?

My Book Review : 1 out of 5 stars. I couldn't finish this book because I could not stand all of the whining, secrets, and childish behavior that the main characters kept up throughout this whole book .... or at least up until Chapter 28 where I stopped reading. I do believe the plot is a good one, but I just could not connect to the characters and they were to annoying for me to really like anything about them. The only character I did like was Cimil, but since she wasn't in the book that much I could have gotten the wrong impression of her. *shrug* Who knows.

On the other hand, from what I've read of the book there are a few funny parts and/or sayings, which did help me get through what I did of the book.

That being said I really am NOT recommending this book at all but if you decide on reading it, I hope you'll like it better than I did. =0/

Author's Series Extras : What WOULD Cimil Do?

Book Teaser(s) :
"Why does he have turquoise eyes?" It couldn't be a coincidence that they looked just like the man's eyes from my dreams. Could it?
"Christ, Emma, put it on the goddamned question list."
I followed the boy for what seemed like an eternity but my muscles burned, and, finally, I had to slow to a fast walk. "I...can't...Guy," I panted, trying to catch my breath. "The air...is way... too thick for any aerobic activities."
"I told you, you need to work out more."
"God. You...are...un...belie...vable," I choked out.
"You have no idea," he replied. ~ within Chapter 11
"What's going to happen?" It was a stupid question, I know. Those Maaskab were coming for me and were, apparently, bad enough that Guy's men preferred to fight at this crazy redheaded demon's side than take them on alone. It felt like a competition for the evil, eviler, and evilest. I just hoped my team was the evilest. Go team? ~ within Chapter 20

"The Duke's Disaster" [True Gentlemen Series, Book 0.5] by Grace Burrowes

What was I thinking? : I am a fan of Ms. Burrowes, liked the book description of this novel, and hoped I'd be a fan of this novel too, but that didn't happen.

Author's Book Description : Noah Winters, Duke of Anselm, exercises the pragmatism for which he’s infamous when his preferred choice of bride cries off, and her companion, Lady Thea Collins, becomes his next choice for his duchess. Lady Thea’s mature, sensible and even rather attractive—what could possibly go wrong?

As a lady fallen on hard times, Thea doesn’t expect tender sentiments from His Grace, but she does wish Noah had courted her trust, lest her past turn their hastily arranged marriage into a life of shared regrets. Is His Grace courting a convenient wife, or a ducal disaster?

My Book Review : 1 out of 5 stars. I don't believe Noah is an awful human being as she states but I agree with the rest of Angie's review. I gave up reading at 37% because I couldn't handle Noah & Thea talking around each other but not to each other. It was aggravating.

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon: Paperback - Pages: 126; Kindle Edition - File Size: 2187 KB | Expected Release Date: September 2, 2016 | Publisher: Self-Published | Obtained: Amazon / Laura Fletcher

"Miss Hopeful" by Laura Fletcher

What was I thinking? : As stated above I was told about this novel being FREE from Ms. Fletcher (the author) and got it through Amazon. I really like the book description and book's cover. Yet, while I didn't love this novel my goal is to always promote the book that I've read, if you don't like my review make sure to check out the extras posted to promote the novel underneath it. So, here we go...

Author's Book Description : Sandra Birmingham is twenty-two years old and has always dreamed of escaping her vigorous and mundane life in Rhode Island. She listed herself in a catalog as a mail-order bride and is hoping a handsome and righteous man is going to ask her for her hand in marriage.

Samuel James Edgerton the older kind, handsome and loving father had been married once and takes care of his sick seven-year-old daughter, Betsy. When Samuel’s father passed away, he was left with no choice but to look for a loyal wife to accompany him and to help care for his daughter. When Samuel first lays his eyes on Sandra, he knew there was much much more about her than the naked eye could see.

They both agree to enter into an arrangement, and soon Sandra finds herself falling in love with Samuel. However, has Samuel really truly gotten over his ex-wife? He has never reconciled his feelings for his past lover but soon finds himself in a situation that he thought he had always wanted. As Betsy’s condition worsens, Samuel and Sandra find themselves hopelessly relying deeply upon each other. What happens next will shock even Samuel himself.

My Book Review : 1 out of 5 stars. A young woman from Rhode Island places an ad for herself as a mail order bride and gets a proposal from a man living in the Montana Territory who wants her to look after his sick daughter. Overtime they form a dear relationship but by then people from their pasts come back and might end up pulling them apart for good...

I LOVED the cover. Yet, I was never a fan of the writing, though the plot held promise. Even though I struggled through it, I was able to read up to 46% reasonably but after that, the writing I couldn't handle anymore and I didn't like the directions the plot was taking me. Therefore, from that point on I skimmed the rest of it, as I was still curious as to what would happen to Betsy.

This novel wasn't for me. So, I don't feel comfortable recommending it. Yet it could be for you if you can overlook the writing style.

Sandra was taken aback with what Betsy had said. She drew a breath, stood up, and finally sat down beside Betsy. "Don't talk like that, Betsy," she kindly said, affected with the child's lack of hope. "Believe me when I tell you that you are so beautiful." ~ within Chapter 5 - titled 'Sandra'

What was I thinking?: The Kissing Booth by Beth Reekles

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 440; Kindle Edition - File Size: 503 KB | Expected Release Date: April 25, 2013 | Publisher: Random House Children's Publishers UK: Corgi Books | Obtained: NetGalley

"The Kissing Booth" by Beth Reekles

What was I thinking? : I liked the cover and the author's book description sounded interesting. I really wanted to like it. However, it feel a bit sort for my liking. =0/

Author's Book Description : Meet Rochelle “Elle” Evans: pretty, popular—and never been kissed.

Meet Noah Flynn: badass, volatile—and a total player.

When Elle decides to run a kissing booth at her school's Spring Carnival, she locks lips with Noah and her life is turned upside down. Her head says to keep away, but her heart wants to draw closer. This romance seems far from a fairy tale.

Is Elle headed for heartbreak or will she get her happily ever after?

My Book Review : 1.5 out of 5 stars. Two teenagers, who have grown up around each other, find that they have stronger feelings for each other then they would have ever imagined. If only they could open up to everyone about their feelings for each other, and not have to have a secret relationship...

I really wanted to like this novel, mostly because I had such high hopes for Noah. But because of Elle's whiny-stubbornness throughout this whole novel, I really had to trudge through to finish it.

I understand that Elle was just displaying typical teenage girl "gitters" about first dates and all. I just really wish that she would have "womaned-up" a bit when it came to telling her best friend/Noah's brother, Lee, when it came to her feelings for Noah better then it was handled.

I will say that because of the way this novel plays out, I'm very happy with how it ended. I mean I would have LOVED to see a whole big romantic ending. Yet, for this novel and everything that Elle and Noah go through I'm glad to see that she was fairly open-minded about it all, willing to hope for the best but support Noah and his dreams.

If this is part of a series, I am very interested as to see what Elle, and Noah, will be up to next.

I recommend it only to those who LOVE teenage angst romances.

Author's Book Interview(s) :

Book Teaser(s) :
I got in the car.
As Noah slid into the driver's seat, he sighed, 'Thank you.'
I nodded. 'You didn't need to yell so much.'
After a second he said, 'I know. I'm sorry.'
I sat there, fiddling with the frayed rips in my jeans. 'Patrick didn't do anything, you know.'
'He would've.'
'We just went out for some fresh air. Is that a crime?'
'Is that what he said?'
'W-well, yeah . . .' I faltered.
Noah sighed heavily, leaning his head against the steering wheel in exasperation before he sat up and looked me in the eye. He looked a lot calmer now, if a bit hopeless.
'And you really thought he meant you were going out for fresh air?'
'At first I did.' ~ within Chapter 12
'Well, that was the summer after I'd started getting into fights at school and shit: my parents sent me to see a couple of counselors. They were trying to help, I know that. But the thing is . . .' He sighed a little. 'They tried, but failed miserably. I'm a bad boy and always will be. Guess it's just the way my brain's wired up.' He shrugged like he couldn't care less.
I really liked these rare conversations where I saw the Noah behind the sexy smirk; when he let me see his vulnerable side. I never knew he'd been to see counselors -- maybe Lee didn't even know about it.
'You're cute when you look all embarrassed like that,' I teased, lightening the mood.
'One, I'm not embarrassed,' he said, knowing I was joking. 'And two' -- he bumped his knee against mine -- 'don't call me cute.'
I laughed now, and he gave me a smile, one that flashed the dimple in his left cheek. ~ within Chapter 16

What was I thinking?: A Marsden Novel, Book 2

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 1215 KB | Release Date: July 17, 2014 | Publisher: Kensington Books : eKensington | Obtained: NetGalley

"Picture This" [A Marsden Novel, Book 2] by Jayne Denker

What was I thinking? : I've been interested in reading about "celebrities" falling in love with "normal people" lately. So, once I read the Author's Book Description I thought this was going to be right up my alley. Yet, even though the plot was what I wanted, in some ways, the main characters were annoying when it came to how they expressed their feelings for each other that after a while they ruined my enjoyment of it.

Author's Book Description : It’s where everyone knows your business—and remembers everything you’d rather forget. But somehow the little Catskills town of Marsden draws the most unlikely people back home, turns their lives every which way, and helps them finally figure out what—and who—they want most...

As a celebrity photographer’s assistant, Celia Marshall is used to seeing all kinds of weird antics. But subbing as the model in irrepressible movie star Niall Crenshaw’s latest endorsement ad—while wearing his silk boxers, no less—is definitely not in her job description. Neither is falling for him, especially since he’s dating his latest co-star. To complicate things further, Celia is returning to Marsden to keep an eye on her eccentric grandmother—and Niall is driving her there, then staying to judge a talent contest...

Soon Celia is pulled in a dozen different directions, trying to get her grandmother to act her age, placating her frantic former boss who’s organizing the contest—and attempting to stay away from funny, sexy Niall. Celia’s always been level headed, but suddenly she’s wishing she could get reckless right along with him. Has the time come for sensible Celia to cut loose?...

My Book Review : 1.5 out of 5 stars. I really tried to like this novel; the beginning was good yet from the halfway point until the end I had to push through it. There were just SOO many second-guesses by Celia and Niall that all I really wanted to do was shake some sense into them most of the way through. Thankfully, some of the secondary characters (like Nora and Holly) and Neil's comedic timing were entertaining.

I couldn't see how this was a Rom-Com, as I found it more to be a Dramedy being heavy on the drama and indecisive characters.

Overall, I wasn't a fan of this novel so I don't recommend it.

Nevertheless, if you were a fan of "Down on Love," book 1 of this series, and/or enjoy Dramedies then you'll like this novel.

Book Teaser(s) :
"You mean it's going to take longer than just this weekend?" Niall couldn't keep the disappointment out of his voice.
Celia actually smiled, though her eyes were watery. "Gran's pretty darn stubborn."
"Imagine that."
"What are you implying?"
"Nothing! Nothing. I am saying absolutely nothing about certain traits running in the family. So . . . Vic's okay with it, right?"
She shrugged. "He told me not to expect him to hold my job for me if I'm gone for more than a week."
"Dick."
"He's got a business to run."
"What did you tell him?"
"That if there wasn't a job for me at his place when I got back, I'd get a better job as a leg model."
Niall laughed heartily. "Atta girl." ~ within Chapter 6
"Tell me you love me."
"Dude . . ."
"Say it, or I'm not telling you the good news. Say, 'Trent, I love you. You are the most amazing personal assistant anyone could ever have. I'm doubling your salary.'"
"Trent, you are the most annoying person on the planet, and if you don't tell me right now, you're fired."
"Empty threat. I have the advantage."
"Come on---!" ~ within Chapter 20

What was I thinking?: The Prairie State Friends Series, Book 2

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon: Paperback - Pages: 320; Kindle Edition - File Size: 1632 KB; Audible - Unabridged; Audio CD - Unabridged | Expected Release Date: August 1, 2015 | Publisher: Barbour Publishing, Inc. : Shiloh Run Press; Gld edition | Obtained: NetGalley

"The Gift" [The Prairie State Friends Series, Book 2] by Wanda E. Brunstetter

What was I thinking? : As stated above I received this novel through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. When I first saw the novel I was intrigued by its cover and book description, therefore I felt confident that I would enjoy this novel as I have with other Amish romances. Sad to say I was wrong... yet while I didn't love this novel my goal is to always promote the book that I've read, if you don't like my review make sure to check out the extras posted to promote the novel underneath it. So, here we go...

Author's Book Description : Publisher’s Weekly, CBA and ECPA Bestseller

Follow the heart-wrenching story of Adam Beachy, whose mother walked out on him and his family—and away from the Amish faith. Now he balks at the idea of ever marrying and having a family of his own. But when tragedy strikes, Adam is suddenly a father figure to his three nieces and finds himself needing a wife. Despite their differences over her practice of reflexology, Leah Mast seems the best option to fill that role. Can they make it work in a modern-day marriage of convenience?

My Book Review : 1.5 out of 5 stars. A continuation from Ms. Brunstetter's "The Decision," focuses around Leah and Adam. Leah practices reflexology, which she learned from her grandmother and considers it a gift she can give to others. Adam is a confirmed bachelor, with plans to stay that way, and owns the local hardware store. Neither really like each other because of their view on reflexology. However, when a freak accident leaves Adam's three nieces in his care both Leah and Adam's lives will be forever changed ... but will those changes be for all the better?

Okay while I didn't love this novel, I have to get these facts straight...
  • FIRST -- This is the first time I've read a book by Ms. Brunstetter.
  • SECOND -- I have read Amish romance novels before and really liked them.
  • THIRD -- When choosing this novel to read/review I was hoping the novel would be a little like Patricia Davids' "Katie's Redemption" as the "heroes" from both novels have slightly similar backstories.

While I'll admit that Adam's childhood is deeply sad it has turned him into a harsh man who doesn't know how to deal with social interactions well. In addition, he seemed like a dense and uncaring character that it was hard to believe him when he tried to act sincere. Nevertheless, as this novel progressed and who Adam's mother was became revealed (which I had already guessed prior to it coming out) you find out that some of Adam's attitude/behavior might be inherited from his parents as his mother seems dense too I mean just read this quote from her...
What if she located the place where the wedding was being held and found out that she wasn't welcome? ~ Adam's Mother
Basically, Adam's mother's plan was to show up uninvited to his wedding, which knowing their tremulous relationship wasn't a good idea. Between Adam and his mother, I felt like giving up on this novel more than once.

What made me stick with this novel was Leah, her family, and her friends. Leah is sweet, kindhearted, and a good woman. I would have loved having her as a friend and learning a bit about her reflexology was cool too. In addition, I was very sad to hear that one of Leah's friends pass away as I had come too really like her in this novel.

As this was the first novel from this series that I've read, I will say that some of the multiple subplots threw me for a loop. The scenes from Elaine and Priscilla's POVs seemed a bit strained, while the POV's from Adam and his mother made me want to pull my hair out half the time, whereas the scenes from Leah's POV mostly made me happy.

Overall, if you are not a fan of Ms. Brunstetter's before looking into this novel (like me) than I DO NOT recommend it.

What was I thinking?: Not Quite Series, Book 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 456 KB | Release Date: November 2012 | Publisher: Montlake Romance | Obtained: Amazon.com | Originally Found Out About On The Author's Facebook Page

"Not Quite Dating" [Not Quite Series, Book 1] by Catherine Bybee

What was I thinking? : I liked the Author's Book Description and a few other of her books so I thought I'd give it a try.

Author's Book Description : Waitress and single mom Jessica “Jessie” Mann is practical to a fault. Even if she had time to date, which she doesn’t, she’d be determined to provide her son with a more secure upbringing than the one she had—and that would mean a husband with big bucks. When Jack Morrison—a sexy-as-sin, seemingly broke customer with a cowboy hat and a seductive grin—tries to flirt with her, she shoots him down. She doubts a carefree dreamer like Jack can provide the financial stability she needs. Yet with Christmas just weeks away, and Jessie not wanting to spend it alone, the charming Texan is proving hard to resist.

As the heir to the Morrison luxury hotel empire, Jack is used to being fawned over. But Jack needs someone who will fall in love with him—not his wealth. He’s set his sights on Jessie, though her hardened heart just might get in the way...
To be sure, he conceals his true identity and offers to help Jessie find the rich husband she seeks. But Jack’s daring charade may rob him of the holiday wish he wants most of all...

My Book Review : 1.5 out of 5 stars--a rich man finds the woman who might just be the perfect girl for him, if only he can prove to her that his lying to her about his wealth and who he really was had nothing to do with her personally then everything would be perfect...

I really tried to like this novel. And in some ways, I kind of did like it, mostly because of Jack and his sweet ways of trying to woo Jessie. Yet, even so, I didn't like Jessie all that much. I understand that she's used to guys using her and watching her mother deal with a string of men. Nevertheless, because of all of that she gets into a "non-ish" relationship with Jack. Mostly she sort of uses him for emotional support yet doesn't want anything more from him because she's afraid that he's a "dreamer" and is going to take off on her whenever the time comes. Even though there is no proof, he'll take off or that he plans too other than him not portraying the rich man facade that he actually is.

Basically, it was very annoying at times. So much so that by the time I got to the middle of Chapter 11, I was done with the novel.

I do hope that if you decide to read this novel you'll enjoy it more than I did. However, I do not recommend it.

- On a side note -
I liked what I read about Jack's best friends and I'm interested to see (if they're the heroes in this series) who they'll end up with.

Author's Book Trailer :

Book Teaser(s) :
“Third table down from the buffet table. Dark hair, a little thick around the middle.” Jack moved to the side so she could see whom he was talking about.
Thick? “At least he couldn’t be my dad, but please, Jack. He looks like a gangster.” Boy did he, short, calorically challenged, and with too much flashy jewelry.
“He probably is. He has what we call ‘family money.’ I don’t think he’s worked a day in his life.”
“A bum with deep pockets,” Jessie said.
“Right.”
“No bums, rich or not. A man has to make his own living. I don’t want someone who will drown if the stock market drops. The guy has to be able to dig himself back out.” Jessie glanced over the heads again.
“So let me get this straight. Rich, not too fat, self-made, young... did I leave anything out?”
“He’s gotta like kids.”
Jack blew out a long breath. “That’s a tall order, darlin’. You sure that kind of guy is out there?”
It was a lofty list. “I’m not sure of anything, Jack. This was your idea.” Her tone was short.
“OK, all right, don’t get all defensive. The night’s still young.”
She glanced at her watch. Actually, it was past eleven already. And no one new was walking in the door. ~ within Chapter 4
“I’m beat.”
“But I want to hear more about this date.”
“It wasn’t a date.”
“He drove you home.”
“That’s because my car wouldn’t start,” she said, explaining the situation.
“He kissed you at the door, and it’s almost three in the morning.”
“We talked in the back of the limo, watched the planes take off.”
“You were in a limo?”
Oh boy, not the information her sister needed to hear if Jessie was going to get any sleep before her son woke her up. “The hotel limo. Jack finagled it to give me a ride home. It wasn’t a date.”
“Sounds like a date to me.”
Jessie had spent the whole night in Jack’s presence, driven home with the guy, talked about their past, their futures. That kiss wouldn’t be forgotten any time soon. “Not quite a date.”
Monica pushed in between the covers of her bed with a catty smile. “If what I saw is ‘not quite dating,’ I want some.” She air quoted the dating statement and then turned off the light.
“Good night, Mo.”
“Night, sis. Have amazing, ‘not quite kissing’ dreams.”
Jessie tossed a pillow at her. “Brat.” ~ within Chapter 6

What was I thinking?: Night Games by Collette West

"Night Games" by Collette West

What was I thinking? : As soon as I read the Author's Book Description I thought this is exactly something I'd like to read about, I just wish it was as good as I had hoped.

Author's Book Description : The moment Grey Kelleher locks eyes with All-Star shortstop Chase Whitfield, she's a goner. For years, she's watched him play on TV, and now she's gazing at his hard, lean body across a bar in her hometown.

Grey's crush on Chase goes all the way back to his rookie season. So when she approaches him for an autograph, she's startled by what a jerk he can be.

Chase is no mood to humor his fans, even one as alluring as Grey. He's in the last year of his contract and stuck having to prove himself on a minor league team. He's only there to rehab an injury, nothing more.

But when Grey tells him off, Chase realizes her fiery spirit may be just the distraction he needs to take his mind off not being in the majors. His heart is safe. No one's going to break his streak as baseball's most eligible bachelor. Not even someone as irresistible as Grey.

My Book Review : 1.5 out of 5 stars. I tried so hard to like this novel, yet even though I forced my way through it, I was only able to thoroughly enjoy the last four chapters (chapter 28 - the epilogue). The main reason was the characters! First off Grey's sister Erin acted way to crazy for the first eight chapters for me to even like her that much (even though I will admit she had good reasons for acting that way). Then there's Grey & Chase. I liked them when they were hitting things off together, but that was about only 50% of the time during the first twenty or so chapters. So, just trying to deal with all of the stubborn attitudes made this novel a major struggle for me to like let alone to finish reading.

The twists were completely unexpected. Some twists were enjoyable, some made me mad enough that I almost stopped reading a few different times. As it is, the plot definitely keeps you on your toes.

I don't recommend this novel, as I was not a fan, yet if you're wanting to give it a try it is for those who like sports theme contemporary romances.

Book Teaser(s) :
I’ve freakin’ kidnapped Chase Whitfield.
I glance over at him. He’s biting his thumbnail, his arm propped up against the partially rolled-down window. The humidity is still high even though it’s the middle of the night, but so far he hasn’t complained about my truck’s lack of air conditioning. In fact, he hasn’t said much at all since I laid down the law.
But I couldn’t resist. I mean, he was acting like a dick. ~ within Chapter 11
“Yeah, he spooked you, didn’t he? Damn it, Richie. I apologize for my husband, Chase. He gets a little high-handed when I’m not there to keep him in check.”
Grey looks away at her mom’s words, no doubt thinking of the day when her mom really won’t be there to scold her father.
“No, it’s fine, Mrs. Kelleher, really.”
“My goodness, you’re even better looking in person.”
“Mom!”
“What? Can’t I admire a handsome man when I see one?”
“Not out loud.”
“I still think you should have been named Sexiest Man Alive instead of the scrawny judge on that singing competition. A man who weighs less than most women? What’s sexy about that?”
“Oh God, Mom.”
“Chase, look at you, all nice and developed. Now that’s what I call a bicep. Come over here. Let me see for myself just how strong you are.”
Grey’s face is beet red, but I’m getting a kick out of her mother. Now I can see where Grey gets her feistiness from.
“Go ahead, Mrs. Kelleher. Be my guest.”
I move up to the side of the bed on my crutches and she reaches up to give my arm a good squeeze.
“Solid as a rock.”
“Too bad I can’t say the same for my knee.”
“Too bad I can’t say the same for my whole body.”
I immediately feel like I just stuck my foot in my mouth, comparing my trivial health problem to hers.
“I didn’t mean—”
“Of course not. Don’t even pay attention to me. But did you ever have one of those days when you’d do anything to feel normal again? Even just for a day?”
“Lately, I’m afraid I have, ma’am.” ~ within Chapter 28
