"Hot Toy" by Jennifer Crusie

Author's Book Description : Previously published in the anthology "Santa, Baby," "HOT TOY" is now available as a standalone e-story for the first time!

Mayhem ensues under the mistletoe as a determined shopper grabs the very last hot toy action figure off the shelf, only to find herself plunged into the middle of a real-life spy game and in the arms of a sexy secret agent...

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars! On Christmas Eve, Trudy is out at an older toy store in hopes of finding the “IT” toy for boys that year. But of course because of it BEING Christmas Eve she doesn’t find it. She only finds last year’s model, yet that throws her life into a chaos-filled adventure!

This novella was not what I was expecting, yet I enjoyed its action-packed plot and Trudy’s quick wit.

"Waiting On" Wednesday: The Great Escape

  • Today's "Waiting On" Wednesday by Jill - click here

  • "The Great Escape" by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Expected Publication Released Date: July 10, 2012

A Note About the Book from the Author:
      Dear Readers,

I’m so glad you’ve come to visit. If you’ve read one of my books, you already know quite a bit about me, but here’s what I know about you... You have a great sense of humor. You believe life is stressful enough without having to read depressing novels. You love a good love story, but you want a little extra, too. A tear. A laugh. A sigh. A sense of recognition. You’ve come to the right place, and I hope you enjoy your visit.

As all of you who’ve read "Call Me Irresistible" know, Ted Beaudine’s bride, Lucy Jorik (from "First Lady") runs away from her wedding at the very beginning of the book. (No spoiler.) We never see her again and—I know that’s sort of rotten—but I had good intentions. I originally planned to include Lucy’s story as part of "Call Me Irresistible," but it quickly became evident that this was a woman who needed her very own book...and her very own man.

For better or worse, she has it!

      "The Great Escape"
      On Sale in hardback
      July 10, 2012

Meet the mysteriously sinister man named...Panda.

He had too long black hair that curled past his collar, cold blue eyes set above high cheekbones, and sadistic lips. After so many years of Secret Service protection, Lucy had grown used to taking her safety for granted, but she didn’t feel safe now, and the fact that she dimly recognized the biker as a guest at last night’s rehearsal dinner—one of Ted’s odd assortment of friends—didn’t exactly reassure her. Even semi-cleaned up in a dark suit that didn’t fit well, a rumpled white shirt open at the collar, and motorcycle boots that appeared to have received nothing more than a dusting, he didn’t look like anybody she wanted to meet in an alley. Exactly where she happened to be...

      Happy reading, Susan

"To Wed a Wild Lord" [The Hellions of Halstead Hall Series, Book 4] by Sabrina Jeffries

My Book Summary : Seven years ago Gabriel's best friend died while he was racing him, that same man was also Virginia's older brother and they are both still dealing that death in different ways: Virginia is doing so by holding a grudge on Gabriel (and his family), who she believes caused her brother to die and plans to make him pay. Gabriel is doing so by living up to his reputation as the "Angel of Death," a nickname that came out right after Virginia's brother died, and taking on just about any race challenge that comes his way. Now Virginia decides to challenge Gabriel to race her on the very same course that killed her brother. However, instead of refusing her challenge Gabriel decides to make a counter offer --- a new race location and greater stakes (if she wins they'll race each other again on the course that she originally wanted and if he wins, he gets to court her).

Virginia believes she'll definitely beat Gabriel, so when she doesn't it comes as a surprise. However, after spending some time with Gabriel and getting to know him better it's not as "bad" a surprise as she once would have thought. Nevertheless, with her brother's death between them, her grandfather's hatred for Gabriel, and Gabriel's disregard for his own safety, would they be able to make it?? Even if Gabriel could prove that, he wasn't marrying Virginia just so he can get his inheritance. Virginia still wants to marry for love, will Gabriel fall in love with her and be able to prove it to her before fate comes in and makes it too late for them?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! "To Wed a Wild Lord" is a sweet, mysterious, and romantic novel about two families trying to get through some major tragedies the best way they can. Even though Amazon.com has recommended I read Sabrina Jeffries' books before this is the first time I have actually read one of her books, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised!! This novel and series has two plots the one that deals with the main character's hopes and dreams and another that deals with the past tragedy of losing parents and the mystery surrounding their deaths. Each plot in this novel was captivating and moving .... the love for those who were lost and how those who've past away have impacted the lives of those that are still around.

The characters in this novel were spectacular too!! The relationship between Gabriel and Virginia was something I could not get enough of, especially when their chemistry seemed to fly off of the page. Then I really liked the relationships each of them had with their own families---very sweet to read about. And then to top it off ... we have their grandparents whom could have probably had a short story of their own as they had soo much spunk!!

I would recommend this to fans of the series (of course) and to any Sabrina Jeffries, Loretta Chase, and/or Susan Elizabeth Phillips fans!

    Teaser #1
Her laugh made something tighten in his chest. "Are you mad? Pierce never rises until well after noon." She cast him a sly glance above the flowers. "I'm surprised you're here so early."
"I always rise early. Can't sleep late."
    "Really? Why?"
A bellow sounded from the fence. "Are you coming, Sharpe, or not?"
He gave her a bow and headed toward her grandfather. ~ within Chapter 10

"Lord of Scoundrels" by Loretta Chase

My Book Summary : Sebastian, the Marquess of Dain, (also known as Lucifer, the Devil's son, Beelzebub, Dain, and quite a few more names) likes his life of debauchery. However, he gets a complete surprise when Jessica (Jess) walks into his life with plans to try to save her brother, Bertie, from his debts and get Bertie out of association with Dain. Dain will not be one to be told what to do by a woman, let alone be told by a lady! So, he does everything in his power to hurt Jess, through using her brother, even more.

Jess won't back down though, and every bad move Dain makes she seems to get him back some way or another. Yet when these two hot-tempered people get in too close proximity, the sparks and chemistry between them seem to be combustible, making their irritation with each other turn into a passion that cannot be denied.

When there are people that are willing to do anything to trump up this pair, by doing whatever it takes to put them into a scandal or worse, will they let their pride get in the way of the facts and go after each other or will they be smart about the situations go after the ones at fault instead?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Exciting and smartly written! I was interested in reading this book ever since I saw it listed as one of Susan Elizabeth Phillips' Favorite Historical Romances on her website, and I'm very happy to say that I completely agree with her in it being a new fave for me too!! Which is saying a lot, especially since I'm not always one for liking historical romances.

Dain has had a very tough life. Because of his past he is now a man who lets very few (if none) people see his true self, and if anyone or anything stands in his way or in front of what he wants he will blow them away with any means necessary. Plus, he's also smart enough to negotiate with the best of them, so usually everything just happens to work out his way. Jess is a hellion all on her own, at least for the time period, and even if she can't outwit Dain at times, she sure can keep him guessing. It is not hard to like this pair, their schemes (against and with each other), and the hot chemistry that they have together.

I definitely recommend this book if you are a fan of historical romances with characters with a LOT of pride on their side, and/or if you are a fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips.

    Book Teaser(s) :
Bertie approached, and in his playing-field confidential whisper asked, "Any idea what she said, Dain?"
    "Yes."
    "What was it?"
    "Men are ignorant brutes."
    "You sure?"
    "Quite."
Bertie let out a sigh and turned to the female, who still appeared fascinated with the contents of the display case. "You promised you wouldn't insult my friends, Jess."
    "I don't see how I could, when I haven't met any." ~ within Chapter 1
Miss Trent, in short, was not only going to make Lord Dain crawl, but she would have Herriard do the dirty work for her, and have it all done legally, with not a loophole for Dain to wriggle out of.
"There is no animal more invincible than a woman," Aristophanes had said, "nor fire either, nor any wildcat so ruthless."
    Ruthless. Vicious. Fiendish.
"Oh, no, you don't," Dain muttered. "Not via go-betweens, you demon spawn." ~ within Chapter 8

    Interview with Sandra Edwards

Sandra is an award-winning romance author. She has eclectic tastes, penning tales in a variety of genres such as paranormal (mostly time travel and reincarnation), contemporary, and romantic suspense. Her books often push the envelope and step outside the boundaries of conventional romance. She lives in the U.S. (west coast) with her husband, two kids, four dogs and one very temperamental feline. [Find out more about Sandra & her books HERE!]

My Q&A with Sandra Edwards :

Jess : When and why did you being writing?

Sandy : I discovered writing when I was about thirteen, after an English assignment to write a short story. My classmates’ stories were maybe half a page and most of them had fairly large penmanship on that assignment. My story, on the other hand, was five pages long. It was then that I discovered writing and how much I loved it. All through high school I acquainted myself with the craft by entertaining my friends with short stories.

Jess : Do you have a specific writing style?

Sandy : No, at least I don’t think so. My style depends on the story I'm currently telling. I always adjust as needed.

Jess : What appeals to you, when writing a ‘paranormal’ book?

Sandy : Time travel, ghosts and reincarnation are my favorite paranormal elements to write about. I love exploring past lives and the idea of “what if you could go back in time?”. It’s always interesting to me to ponder thoughts on what an individual might do given the chance to change the past.

Jess : Do you have a favorite character that you’ve written? If so, in which book and why?

Sandy : A favorite character? That’d be like choosing a favorite child. My favorite character is always the hero and/or heroine that I’m currently writing.

Jess : What sparked the idea for your novel, Incredible Dreams?

Sandy : A fascination with ghost stories and time travel. Ghost stories where people have died tragically (and weren’t murdered) always leave me feeling sentimental. After fusing a couple of these tragic tales together with my other fascination: the 1940s, I came up with the idea for Incredible Dreams.

Jess : Is it fun to write from two different view points?

Sandy : I love writing in multiple view points. When it comes to romance I don’t feel like I’m getting the whole story if I don’t get to experience both the hero and the heroine’s POV. Likewise, if it’s a suspense, part of the story is missing if I don’t get a peak at what’s inside the “bad guy’s” head.

Jess : Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

Sandy : The first book I wrote was a combination of a character/story idea. The idea for the book was sparked by a song, but it was curiosity over how the songwriter had gotten himself in this situation that began to take shape in the form of Crazy For You.

Jess : Did you put any of your personal experiences into your books? If so, which book and why?

Sandy : No, my books are all completely fiction.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Sandy : I’ve completed six books, and I have a plethora of WIPs (works in progress). As with characters, my favorite book is always the one I’m currently working on.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Sandy : I’m in the process of wrapping up the second book in the Soul Searchers series titled Vegas, Baby. In this book, without giving away too much of Broken Wings’ plot (the first book in the series), let me just say that while Broken Wings was about Rio learning about her previous life, this book is about Rio and “her” life.

I’m also working on a book titled Forever For You, which reunites the cast of Crazy For You and throws them smack-dab into the middle of a murder mystery.

Jess : What book are you reading now? How do you like it so far?

Sandy : I’m currently reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry (something I became interested in after my husband talked me into watching the mini-series). It’s a very entertaining read even though, for me, the pacing seems to read a bit slow at times.

-- I was sooo happy about having my FIRST interview!! Thanks Sandy!! It was great talking with you and getting into your books!! --

Feasted On: Hot Shot by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 636 KB | Release Date: January 2010 | Publisher: eBooks

"Hot Shot" by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

My Book Summary : Susannah (Suzie or Suze) grew up with her grandmother after her mother left her there. The only problem was is that her grandmother was crazy, throwing strict rules at her that no one would ever be able to live up to, so when she got into trouble her usual punishment was to be locked into a stuffy closet where the dusty fur coats were held. Which always made her more skittish and scared then really helped her, making her get into trouble for other things that her grandmother might not have liked. So, when a guy finds her one day inside the closet, takes her out of there and her grandmother's house, tells her that he is her mother's husband and that she should call him father, she feels like he is her knight-in-shining-armor and plans to be the best daughter she could be. Over the years though being the best daughter has made her father love her more then his biological child, has made her younger sister resent her, and made her take up the role of coordinating the mansion and her father's schedule for him when her mother doesn't make the effort to do so.

Now, at the age of 25, she is planning on getting married to a guy that her father approves of and is feeling more trapped in her life (and her perfect daughter role) more then ever. Therefore, when Sam steps into her life trying to get a meeting with her father about his brilliant idea he'd like to sell him, she starts to realize that there might be a better life out there for her if only she would let it. However, when she decides to follow her heart, she finds herself cut off from the only family she's known and the only parent that has ever loved her. Then when she gets more involved in Sam and his partner's brilliant idea she realizes she's a women in a man's world, and she is going to have to fight her way to be seen as more then Sam's girl, especially when there are people who seem to want to knock her down every step of the way.

My Book Review : 4.5 out of 5 stars! Okay .... originally this book, in it's hardcover/paperback formats, was written in 1991 so most of the book is based in the 70's and 80's which is when women were just coming into the work force (more so then before) and taking on bigger roles that others might not have been ready for them to do. Plus, this book (based on what the author writes in her 'author's note') is based prominently on fiction, about the IBM's and Apple's of that time period (how they all got started -- etc.) while set in her non-fiction world. It kept me captivated! In addition, I LOVED the relationship Susannah had with Sam, Yank, & Mitch!! However, I will admit throughout this book there are twists that I really didn't expect to see, and I wish I had some tissues with me when they did come around.

My only problem with the book was that even though I loved the relationships that were written between all of the characters, I think there should have been a bit more about Susannah and the man she is with towards the end. Since the story gets them together but you really don't get to see their relationship bloom more so then what is provided already in the book. *shrug* But that could be just me.

Anyway .... I recommend this book for those who like fiction and non-fiction type of books mixed together, along with those whom have read the other books of Susan Elizabeth Phillips before since this one is one of her first books, and is GREAT right along with the rest!!

    Book Teaser(s) :
She leaned into him just like always and moaned softly against his mouth. Reluctantly, he drew away.
She sighed and looked over at the boxes of parts. "You're going to put me to work now, aren't you?"
"I promise you can take a coffee break sometime next week."
She laughed, and then, together, they settled down to begin the laborious process of assembling forty single-board computers.
The task involved "stuffing" every one of the printed circuit boards by hand. ~ within Chapter 11
"Be honest with me," he said, as he stretched out his legs. "Do you think I'm stuffy?"
    "You? Perish the thought."
"I'm not joking. I want to know."
    "You're serious?"
    He nodded.
    "Yes. You're definitely stuffy."
"Well, thank you. Thank you so very much." He glared at her, a picture of offended dignity. ~ within Chapter 21
