Made the Grade: Pack Seduction Series, Book 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 141 KB | Release Date: April 2011 | Publisher: Evernight Publishing

"Claiming Their Mate" [Pack Seduction Series, Book 1] by Stacey Espino

My Book Summary : Carna and her sisters are all royalty amongst their kind. And by being royalty, their blood helps make sure that the breeds of whoever they mate won't die out. Because of that responsibility and because of the fact that when she became of mature age all male shifter thought they could just have her and she'd be theirs, her sisters and her ran away, split up, and went into hiding so they could possibly find lives and men of their own.

Since then Carna's life hasn't been so great but it has been hers.

However, one night four men (friends) find and kidnap her with plans of seducing and mating her. But Carna will have none of their games. She'll never mate a kidnapper or someone who only want her for her heritage. And that's all they want ... right?

The guys will go to great lengths just to prove how wrong she is!!

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars! HOT, SWEET, and SEXY!! This book pulls you in and doesn't let go! Who wouldn't want to read about four alpha males who will do anything in their power for their mate!

My only complaints it was too short and rushed through everything. Plus, the ending could of had more.

Book Teaser(s) :
The natural desire to mate, to bond, pulled her under its spell, but she had to resist the call.
"Touch me. Please." The need in her voice surprised her. Close to the point of no return, her control snapped back to attention when a new male voice replied.
"You don't have to beg, darlin'."
"Back already?" asked Blue, not shifting his position, only turning his head to the entrance of the cave. "Your timing is impeccable."
"Good thing, too. I don't want you starting without me." ~ within Chapter 4

Made the Grade: Charm School Series, Book 1

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 2483 KB | Expected Release Date: March 30, 2015 | Publisher: Self-Published | Obtained: Juniper Grove Book Solutions

"Charm School After Dark: Lesson 1" [Charm School Series, Book 1] by Lynn Carmer

Author's Book Description : Caelen Calvo has three meddling sisters, an employment problem, a married ex-boyfriend, and a massive headache from all the drama. Pass the wine, please. Her only hope of redemption comes in the form of a charm school that she and her sisters have recently inherited. The problem? The real money comes, not from manners and etiquette, but from naughty, after hour, classes that the sisters must take over and teach.
Caelen draws the short straw. The first topic on the charm school’s roster, well, let’s just say it involves her mouth and a man’s . . . Thrill Drill. If she were a cheerleader, she would chant: Give me a B to the J, rah, rah, rah—Caelen has four short days to research advanced techniques like The Corn on the Cob and The Twist and Twirl . . . plus prep the charm school for a blowout party and – oh yeah – find a man willing to be her temporary guinea pig.
Dare Lagos has been in love with Caelen since middle school. The former professional boxer, turned firefighter, has always fought for what he wants. The battle for Caelen’s heart is no different. Doesn’t matter that they used to bicker, endlessly, back in the day. Doesn’t matter that he has a cheating ex-wife that created serious trust issues. And it shouldn’t matter that he’s been suspended from his job as a Hot Shot, because he may have over-reacted when his ex-wife’s Boy Toy was assigned to his station. Nope. None of that matters except the taste of her smart mouth, the feel of her smooth skin and the smell of her sultry scent surrounding him. He wants Caelen Calvo—and he’s going to make sure that the only name on her short-list, is his.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! While the Calvo Quads are informed that their mentor left her Charm School to them in her will, they are also informed about the harsh situation the school is in. First – the Charm School is in dire financial straits. Second – there is someone who hopes to take the school from them. Then Third – their mentor’s plan to save the school was to host afterhours private classes for women who need a little help in the bedroom and they only have four days left to learn what they can before the first class. Because of an argument that the quads have it becomes apparent to Caelen that she’ll be in charge of the first class, especially if she wants to keep the school. So, Caelen does what she can to find out everything about her mentor’s first topic, blowjobs. Now if she can find the right man so help her out. Her old nemesis looks to be the perfect guy for her, and he is so very willing. Yet as they grow closer and find they want more than their four-day compromise, both of their pasts come back into their lives to haunt them. Can they trust one another and love one another enough to see everything through?

This uniquely erotic contemporary romance really sets up a nice pace for itself and the rest of its series. Funny, bright, and VERY steamy this novel seems to have it all! I really liked how Caelen and Dare come to terms with their attraction and get together. Then to top it off with the way Caelen tries to find her balance with him and how Dare deals with her eccentricities, it made me want to root for their relationship even more. My only wish was that the parts of the novel that were the “build ups” for this series weren’t so drawn out, as at times it left me a bit distracted and confused as to where the plotline would lead us.

Nevertheless, I do recommend this novel and series to those looking for a quick-witted erotic romance!

Book Teaser(s) :
Caelen was back! And it was time for her to see how much he’d changed.
It will be different this time. He made the silent promise to himself as he imagined showering her with compliments instead of insults. She would feel the full power of his attention, instead of his sloppy, teenage jabs.
Holy hell. Just like that, life was good again.
Let the insanity begin. ~ within Chapter 2
“But hell, baby. I love your outfits. I love every sexy inch of skin that teddy showed off.”
Joy sang in her heart. Yes! “So, I was right! It totally made it better.”
“Of course it did.”
I knew it.
Then he ruined her smug triumph by saying, “’Cuz you’re practically naked!” ~ within Chapter 20

Made the Grade: Doctors in Training Series, Book 3

Format: Paperback | Pages: 217 | Release Date: July 2010 | Publisher: Silhouette Books

"The Doctor's Undoing" [Doctors in Training Series, Book 3] by Gina Wilkins

My Book Summary : Haley and Ron are friends, medical students in their 3rd year of training, and they are on the same rotation while their other friends from the study group their in are somewhere else. Ron has grown up not knowing if he would be able to amount to much, and because of that anytime something tough happens to him he walks away from it before it gets too hard. Which is also what he applies to every aspect of his life from what he does for a job, how he makes it through medical school, and in his personal life with the woman he dates. Haley is what Ron calls a "cheerleader", as soon as he or anyone around them starts complaining about giving up she is right their to cheer them up and on to the next course of their schooling. Because of their different, point-of-views they have had their share of fights/arguments during their study sessions. However, since the beginning of their 3rd year, they have been on better terms then they usually are.

With all their friends in different rotations, except for each other, they become closer in working together and studying with each other. So much so that they both try fighting their attraction at first because they don't want to ruin their friendship. But after that first kiss, Ron is committed to Haley wanting to see where this will take them. Now he just needs to convince Haley that just because his motto usually is to ‘walk away when things get tough’ doesn't mean he plans to ever walk away from her.

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. This is my first doctor book and as short as the book was I really liked how smoothly it guided it's scenes to fit in more detail then I originally expected. Lets just say I was pleasantly surprised. =0)

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Almost Famous

Book Teaser(s) :
He was starting to sound annoyed, and she bit back any more expressions of concern that he seemed to be so nonchalant about the possibility that his unpleasant resident would hurt his résumé. Maybe he was right, maybe one ill-tempered resident and one uncaring attending wouldn't cause much trouble for Ron. But that didn't mean he should just give up and say there was nothing he could do about it.
Irked with him for not listening to her, she shrugged. "Fine. It's your career."
"Exactly." ~ within Chapter 7

Feasted On: Scent and Shadow by Mercy Loomis

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 506 KB | Release Date: October 2011 | Publisher: Rookery Creek Media | Obtained: Indie Book Collective: Blog Tour de Troops

"Scent and Shadow" [An Aether Vitalis novel] by Mercy Loomis

My Book Summary : Amanda has felt like someone has been watching her for a while now, and she would be right. However, she doesn't know until it's too late, or so she thinks.

Gabriel has been feeling the urge to turn someone for a while now, and the someone he's chosen is Amanda. After he attacks her, turning her into his fledgling, she learns that if she can hold out about a month without killing someone then she will be able to be human again. Gabriel isn't going to make it that easy on her though, as he's planning on luring her into being a vampire if it's the last thing he does. Will Gabriel be able to lure Amanda into becoming a vampire or will her freedom and humanity be more preferable?

Unbeknownst to them, though, Amanda becomes a pawn in a scheme that could not only hurt Gabriel but Amanda and the city they live in too. Will they be able to work together long enough and find out about the treat before it's too late?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Dark, exotic, and intriguing are just some of the words I would use to describe this unique take on a paranormal novel. Before I read this book I took what this book was called an 'urban paranormal' as to mean 'paranormal romance,' why I don't really know, but I will say if you make that mistake too you still won't be disappointed! I say that because even though this book does NOT romanticize what a vampire is, it DOES talk about the connections Gabriel (the main vampire in the book) has with those he cares for and digs into what it means to be a vampire (based in the world the author has created).

I loved the characters and finding out their back-stories. However, the author bounced around a lot from different characters POVs during the first quarter of the book that it was somewhat hard to find (pinpoint) where the plot was heading. Thankfully though by the middle of the book the plot evens out a bit and you get swept away in the many new twist and turns never quite sure which way the story will lead you. Then the ending just wraps everything up very nicely!! I was very happy about Paul & Cecelia, and I'm curious as to how the new situation between Amanda & Gabriel will work out.

I recommend this for those who like reading the darker type of paranormal books. FYI -- sexual content (hot and steamy) is in this book.

Book Teaser(s) :
Teaser #1
Gabriel was quiet for the first few minutes of their trip back into town. Finally he said, glancing at her quizzically, “I hadn’t expected you to give in about the blood so quickly.”
“Oh?” Amanda kept her thoughts carefully blank.
“What made you change your mind?”
She shifted uncomfortably. “Well, I mean, you already had it on your lips, and, well... I wanted to kiss you, damn it. So I did.”
He laughed, low and deep. “What did you think of it?”
“The kiss or the blood?”
He gave her an amused glance. “The blood.”
She raised a hand to her lips. “Too brief,” she said at last.
“That I can fix.”
“Gabriel...” ~ within Chapter 15

Feasted On: Eternal Guardians Series, Book 1

Format: Paperback | Pages: 321 | Release Date: May 2010 | Publisher: Love Spell

"Marked" [Eternal Guardians Series, Book 1] by Elisabeth Naughton

My Book Summary : Acacia’s (Casey) life and everything she knew herself to be completely changes when Theron, the leader of the Argonauts (an elite group of guardians that defend the immortal realm against the threats of the Underworld), comes into her life in the most unexpected way. Now she has to deal with the fact that she has a heritage that she wasn’t originally aware of, the fact that she doesn’t have long left to live, and a ‘man’ who she just can’t get out of her mind.

Theron never expected Casey was the girl he needs to turn over for the prophesy to come true. Casey is also someone he never expects, as she has and is all of the things he would ever want in a female. But duty and honor to his people must come first! However, will his honor and duty come first ... even if that means giving up the one woman who might just happen to be his soul mate?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars!! This story takes myths to a whole new level!! Casey is a feisty, opinionated, kind-hearted woman, while Theron is an arrogant, strong-willed, passionate man. Reading about the two of them together it’s like you can see the sparks flying off of the page! The twists in this book are really unexpected and even when the book leaves you hanging in some instances you still aren’t disappointed! Plus, the side stories about the other characters lure you in and make you sooo very curious as to what will happen next in this series!

I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys a non-typical fantasy drama!!

Book Teaser(s) :
The man turned toward Acacia, who'd somehow managed to scramble back onto the counter. "Casey, come down."
"Oh, my God. Nick. Jesus Christ, what the hell---?"
The blond's big hands plucked Acacia right off the counter before Theron had a chance to stop him, and he set her on her feet in the middle of the store. The man grasped her shoulders and held firm. "Take a breath, Casey. More will be coming."
"More? What do you---?"
Then, almost as if she'd just realized the two of them weren't alone, her eyes flashed to Theron, understanding dawning in their violet depths. And for the first time since he'd met her, he realized how similar those eyes were to the king's.
"Those things," she said. "I saw them that night with you. Outside XScream."
The man she'd called Nick glanced up sharply. "You brought them here? To her?"
"No," Theron said, shoving his weapon back into its scabbard at his back. Now he was the bad guy? Fuck that. "I was sent to protect her." ~ within Chapter 12

Blog Tour - Made the Grade: A Howl in the Night by Courtney Rene | Interview, Review, & Giveaway

Today I'm turning my blog over to Courtney Rene, who I interviewed about her latest novel "A Howl in the Night!!"

ALSO -- Be sure to comment on this post to be able to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAYs (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from July 30 - August 3, 2012]

My Q&A with Courtney Rene :

Jess : What books have most influenced your life?

Courtney : I think this changes depending on where my life is at the moment. Right now though, I would have to say: V. C. Andrews. She gave me great incite into the darkness of life. A real darkness, not the monsters and stuff you find in Anne Rice or Stephen King. The Heaven series was a great one in that regard. Seeing how real people can be so screwed up, and look just as normal as you and me, changed my view of the world in general. Took some of the rosy color out of the world.

Jess : Which of your characters would you most & least like to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

Courtney : I would most like to have dinner with Gabriel from my book, "Shadow Warrior." I picture him as a Viking or maybe a gruff but handsome man from the highlands of Scotland. If you could get him to talk, it would be fun to see what he would say. Plus he’s kinda hot. I know for the teen reader, Gabriel is old, but to me an adult, he’s a gorgeous, buff, masculine guy. I would love for him to come to life and sit down at my table.

I would least like to invite Grandfather Staton, from my book, "A Howl in the Night." I have a snarky mouth at times. My luck it would get the best of me and he would go on the attack. Plus I don’t do the whole, “man is greater than woman” thing. That would get under my skin pretty quick!

Jess : Which character spoke the loudest to you when writing? Do any of them clamor to be heard over the others? Who is it, and from which book? What type of things do they say?

Courtney : A lot of my characters will chat me up now and then. I don’t mind in general, as it’s a great way to really connect with each of them. I know this sounds mental to un-writer people, but I promise we aren’t nuts. Well not about this anyway.

However, Abby, the main character, in my book, "A Howl in the Night," was loud as all heck! All the time. She would wake me up at night demanding to be heard. She would pester me while I was trying to do other things, like read. Her biggest problem was, that she didn’t like Derek. No, that’s not even accurate. There was a period there that she loathed him. If she’d had her way, he would have been neutered at one point. There was also a point at the end where she wanted to basically have a blood bath between the two clans of wolves. I wrote the scene for her and realized, it was too, too much.

Jess : What was the hardest part of writing "A Howl in the Night?"

Courtney : I am pretty good with horror and fantasy writing, but I struggle big time with the love parts. There I am, trying to put myself into the scene to see if it’s working and I get all giggly and embarrassed, and red in the face. I can feel the blush on my cheeks. Blood and guts no worries, a bit of touchy feely and Courtney freaks out. All in all it turned out pretty good (even if it’s me saying so) but man, that was rough.

Jess : If "A Howl in the Night" were to be made into a film, who do you see playing the main characters and why?

Courtney : Oh, great questions. I hadn’t even thought about a movie for this book. I would say Selena Gomez is still young enough to pull it off. Plus she has the dark hair already with the small form that Abby has. Oh! Miranda Cosgrove from iCarly. She would be great. She even has a good face for it. Yeah. I like her for the part.

Jess : Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

Courtney : Usually just a random thought pops in to my head and it takes off from there. Something like, “It would be so cool to shape shift into a wolf. Where do werewolves actually come from? Do they all get along?” Next thing you know, you have two warring clans, fighting over a female shape shifter, and taa daa, novel in motion.

Jess : Please describe your heroine, from "A Howl in the Night," in one to two sentences.

Courtney : Abigail Staton – A confident, yet strong willed, sixteen-year-old girl. She has a bit of a mouth now and then, but has a soft heart that surprises even her at times.

Jess : In regards to your most recent novel, if you could write it all over again, would you change anything about it?

Courtney : I am always second-guessing myself when it comes to my novels. For this one, I wonder if it should have been more violent in the end. I tried to hold back on too much violence as it is a teen novel, but I wonder if in doing so, I made it not violent enough.

Jess : How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?

Courtney : I have written four at this time.

    "Shadow Dancer"
    "Shadow Warrior"
    "A Howl in the Night"
"Shadows End" (to release Fall 2012)

My current favorite is "Shadows End." I think its because I am neck deep in it right now with final edits as we get ready for release. I have gotten very attached to the characters of the Shadow Dancer Series and this book is the climax of that story. It has love. It has deception. It has murder, mayhem, and death. It’s a great story. I can’t wait for it to come out so that everyone can read it.

Jess : Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Courtney : I am currently writing a new story about angels and demons. Not much to tell at this point except that I found this old book of the bible (that had been removed by the church centuries ago) called "The Book of Enoch" about the fall of the angels from heaven. So I decided to write a story about one of the fallen. It has potential.

Jess : Have you ever gone out in public with your shirt on backwards, or your slippers on, and when realizing it, just said screw it?

Courtney : Yes, yes I have, more than once and many different silly things too. I once realized I needed to put on a slip under my white skirt as I could see in great detail, the little pink sunshines that covered my panties through my skirt. Then I got busy feeding the dogs, and getting the girls off to school that I completely forgot until I was out in public with the sunshines out for the world to see. That was a fun day... Not much you can do about it some days, so you just have to plod on and yes, say screw it.

Jess : If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Courtney : "Out of the darkness."
    "From the bottom, up."
"Oopsy, sorry about that" (Ha! This one is the best if you know me at all).

Jess : What book are you reading now? How do you like it so far?

Courtney : "Blood Trails" by Sharon Sala (The Searchers Series). I’m only about 2 chapters in and...oh I hate to say it, but I am bored. I know if I can just get to the good stuff it will be great but yeah, slow start to this one. Too much back story.

"A Howl in the Night" by Courtney Rene

My Book Summary : Abigail (Abby) sixteenth birthday goes from promising to bad to worse in just a few hours. First, her best friend, Brian, announces that he's in love with her, yet she doesn't feel the same way about them, so they end up arguing. Second, she receives a birthday present from her father who she has never met and knows nothing about. Third, she finds out from her mother that her father is a werewolf. Which are all great ways to ruin her birthday and change her world forever, especially when her father decides on coming back into her and her mother's lives. Now she's thrust into a world she isn't prepared for and into the middle of a war between two werewolf clans that has been brewing for a while. Will she be able to get up to speed with the new changes in herself and her life before everything else around her comes crashing down? Is she the key to change everything for the better?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This fast-paced young adult novel is filled with unexpected twists that lead you to its surprise ending and wanting for more! Abby is a strong lead character who knows who she is (for the most part) enough to stay true to herself throughout this novel. Also, I really liked her spunk and resourcefulness when she dealt with all the changes coming at her.

Even though it worked well for the plot, I really hated how Abby's mother suddenly changed once Abby's father came into the picture. It made the novel harder for me to read since I couldn't get over the thought of 'how could she do that to her daughter?' Yet even because of that and the how slow the beginning was of this novel, it makes the middle and ending all the better!!

Since I typically read romance novels (yes, YA ones too) I was a bit surprised at how Abby went about her feelings for the men in her life. However, because of that it definitely makes you intrigued as to where she'll be going and whom she'll be with in the sequel to this novel whenever that'll come out. I really have high hopes for this series. =0)

I recommend this to anyone who likes paranormal romance/horror young adult novels!

I crawled under the covers on my bed, shoving Shadow over a bit to get some room. I flung an arm over his warm body, buried my face against his furry side and slept.
I was not afraid. I was not alone. Shadow was enough for me, for the night. ~ within Chapter 5
Why did I even try? Because I needed to make him understand who I was, what I wanted...but then what? He would still be Derek the great and wonderful wolf, and I would still be stuck with him.
"Oh good. You need to remember that love is evil. It makes you weak. It makes you a fool. I mean, look at the first Staton Wolf. He was in love and look what it did for him?" Derek said.
"It wasn't love that made him an animal," I said.
"Yes, it was. It made him crazy and loose focus. No, I don't want love and neither should you."
I shrugged. "But I do want it," I said. "Where does that leave us?"
"Well, you have two years to get over it."
If only it was that simple. My wolf shifted under my skin, making me aware of her presence. She was both a curse and a gift. She was also going to be my salvation, if I could just figure out how to use her. ~ within Chapter 10

    Book Excerpt :

    “What’re you cooking?”

“I just got in, so nothing yet.”

I felt a bit confused for a moment, because I could smell something. It smelled salty and something else I couldn’t put my finger on. I tipped my head up a bit and sniffed the air. The smell was really strong and pungent in the kitchen. It was there somewhere.

“What’s that smell then?” Suddenly, I was starving.

She turned around and looked at me, but before she could answer, I spied a white package sitting partially unwrapped on the counter. I went over to it and pulled open the paper to see what smelled so good.

Inside was a chunk of bloody, raw meat. My stomach churned and flipped suddenly, not in sickness but in desire. My brain may have been saying eww gross, but for some reason my body was saying, oh yeah, give it to me now. I backed away from the counter. I had a feeling if I didn’t, I would have pounced on that slab of meat and chawed down on it, raw or not.

“What’s wrong?” Mom said, “It’s not for you, I promise. I have stuff to make pasta salad too. What else you in the mood for?”

I decided she didn’t really want to know the answer to that question.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the white paper, sitting there, unattended, smelling up the house with its heavenly scent.

Made the Grade: The Cat Star Chronicles, Book 8

    - This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 383; Kindle Edition - File Size: 1188 KB | Expected Release Date: February 1, 2012 | Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca | Obtained: NetGalley

"Stud" [The Cat Star Chronicles, Book 8] by Cheryl Brooks

My Book Summary : Over the years, Tarq has put what he knew best to work over the years, by being a stud, and it has made him rich. Nevertheless, it has yet to make him really happy.

As far as Loucinda (Lucy) can remember she has been the one to do everything her parents have ever asked for. From making sure breakfast was ready in the mornings for them to never dating a guy before because her father made sure none came around and a whole lot more.

When these two meet at Lucy's father's restaurant, it is love at first sight/smell. However, when false pretenses, insecurities, and other people try to come between them, how will they ever be able to admit to each other how they truly feel? Or by the time one of them does .... will it already be too late?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars! Sweet and adventurous is how I would describe this latest novel from The Cat Star Chronicles series. I love this series because of the Zetithians (males and females) and their unique ways! Therefore, I could not wait to read this novel. The characters were colorful and I'm really interested to see if Vertigan will have a bigger role in the next book or not. I really liked the chemistry between Tarq and Lucy! They were such a sweet couple.

However, my biggest issue with this novel was how much Tarq and Lucy second-guessed themselves and each other when it came to their feelings. I mean there were some really great scenes in this novel. Nevertheless, it seems not long after those great scenes happened the main characters (either one of them or both) would backtrack on their decisions, just drawing out the false pretenses that they were using even though there originally was none! I really couldn't believe that they were so insecure with themselves that they kept putting themselves down. At some points I just wanted to smack them (mostly Lucy since she does it more than Tarq) so they get on track and stop thinking about themselves the way they were. It was really annoying.

In addition, even though I haven't read all of the books in this series, I was a little surprised that Jack and Cat weren't in this one (not that they needed to be). On the other hand, I really liked that this was only the POVs from the main characters, since in some of the other books it was POVs from a little bit of everyone.

Anyways .... I would recommend this novel to anyone who is a fan of the series like me!

    My Previous Review(s) for this Series : Book 1 | Book 4

    Book Teaser(s) :
He wasn't cold---in fact, he felt warmer than normal, which was reassuring. Placing her fingertips on the side of his neck, she finally felt a pulse---very faint and slow, but steady. Perhaps this was what he'd meant when he'd said his body would shut down to heal itself. On the other hand, he'd said he would sleep for a couple of days, not appear to be dead. Trust a man to leave out that most pertinent detail... ~ within Chapter 15
"Need a slingshot, though---or something like it. With all these rocks lying around everywhere, there's plenty of ammunition. Don't suppose you've got anything stretchy in that bag of yours, do you?"
Lucy thought for a moment. "Um, the elastic in my underwear, maybe? It's pretty stretchy."
Tarq began chuckling uncontrollably. "I can hardly wait to tell Dax I killed a vrelnot---or anything else, for that matter---with a pair of ladies panties." ~ within Chapter 21

Made the Grade: Fairwick Chronicles, Book 1

    - This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 448; Kindle Edition - File Size: 425 KB | Expected Release Date: December 27, 2011 | Publisher: Ballantine Books | Obtained: NetGalley

"The Demon Lover" [Fairwick Chronicles, Book 1] by Juliet Dark (aka Carol Goodman)

My Book Summary : Cailleach (Callie) just recently accepted a job as a college professor at Fairwick College in New York. Even though she admits to being a "city girl," the town, its occupants, and her new house, the Honeysuckle House, unexpectedly grow on her while she was interviewing for the position. However, good portions of the town’s inhabitants seem to be very mysterious about certain things. Like, why she shouldn't buy the Honeysuckle House or go for long jogs out into the woods. Why a few of the teachers only teach or are seen around town during the night? Then there is the fact the famous novelist, who used to own the Honeysuckle House, left her manuscripts to whoever decides to own the house. And after reading a few of the author's fiction novels Callie finds that the "hero" in most of the novels are very similar to her own "dream lover" who has been visiting her just about every night since she showed up to Fairwick. So, what could really be going on in this town and college?? In addition, when the truth comes out will Callie still want to stay in Fairwick or will she go back to the life she's always known??

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! Even though this novel has some spicy romance to it, it is mostly a dark mystery revolving around the town of Fairwick, its occupants, Callie's past and what her new roles are within the town. At the beginning of this novel it started out a little slow for me, so I wasn't sure if I would really appreciate it or not. However, not long after the beginning all of the twists and additional storylines come into play leaving you very curious as to what will happen next!! I know I was surprised about some of the turn of events within this novel. Yet, I did love how this author brought out the "dark" side of the supernatural beings without really portraying them as evil.

    About the Characters:
    • Dean Book/Elizabeth Book/Liz: Is very naïve. I didn't like her in the beginning, then towards the middle she seemed okay, and by the end I'm just wondering how she was EVER left in charge of the college (and town).

    • Ralph: He seems so sweet ... I wish I could have one just like him!

    • Frank: I just don't know what to think about him ... he seems bad one second and then he's good. =0/ (same thing can be said about Soheila too)

    • Phoenix: Poor thing. *shakes head*

    • Liam: He's sneaky, mysterious, and passionate.

    • Characters I DID like: Dory | Diana | Nicky | Brock

    • Characters who I thought were BITCHES: Fiona | Mara

I recommend this to everyone who enjoys reading mysterious paranormal/fantasy novels with a little bit of romance and some erotica thrown in. =0)

    Book Teaser(s) :
I was in a crowd walking across en endless, rolling meadow. My legs and feet hurt as if I'd been walking for miles. I looked down and saw that my feet were bare in the wet grass. My legs were scratched and bleeding, my dress torn to tatters around my knees. I was alarmed at the sight. ~ within Chapter 11
Great, I thought, as the sound of wings came closer, where was I going to find a feather on short notice? But I was wearing a down coat, an old one that sometimes leaked . . .
I patted my coat until I felt something prickly . . . and pulled. I waved the tiny feather in my hand while picturing an empty blue sky and pronouncing (correctly I hoped) the three prescribed words:
    "Vacuefaca naddel nem!"
Something thumped my back. So much for having magical talents. I turned over, raising my hands to cover my face for protection . . . and found myself looking up at Liam Doyle. ~ within Chapter 22
