Disappointmentville: The Lone Stars Series, Book 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 506 KB | Release Date: October 16, 2013 | Publisher: Self-Published | Obtained: Amazon.com

"Perfect Summer" [The Lone Stars Series, Book 1] by Katie Graykowski

Author's Book Description : High school teacher Summer Ames is trapped in the nightmare morning from hell. Her alarm clock didn’t go off, she accidentally backed over the rosebush her grandfather gave her grandmother right before he accepted defeat against prostate cancer, she’s wearing clothes she picked up off the floor, and when she opens the door to her classroom, the lights from the TV cameras nearly blind her. She's won Teacher of the Year. But unlike the past winners, she doesn't get a new car or a Hawaiian vacation or even new school supplies, she wins an over privileged quarterback with a bright smile and questionable intentions.

Clint Grayson is an NFL quarterback in need of a reputation makeover. If he has any hope of landing a hundred million dollar endorsement deal, it will take some pretty impressive PR to clean up his bad boy image. In an attempt to polish his tarnished reputation, Clint agrees to be a high school class mentor.

When these two get together all hell breaks loose and they both learn that all is fair in love and football…and winning is just the beginning.

My Book Review : 2.5 out of 5 stars. Summerville (Summer) has finally won Teacher of the Year, but instead of earning a new car or a wonderful trip she gets Clint--The Lone Star's Quarterback--as her new class mentor. YAY! Not. However, soon she'll realize that Clint coming into her life is only for the better if she can only get over her insecurities and embrace her unexpected future...

In truth, though I was surprised by the double plot romances (one with Summer and the other with her mother) I really liked how this novel began. It was steady passed and the playful banter between all the characters was very entertaining. However, around 57% of the way through this novel seemed to start dragging and the characters behavior started becoming a little ridiculous especially with all of their insecurities coming out of the woodwork. While I liked the pairings of Summer with Clint and Summer's mother Lillian (Lilly) with Davis (a man who loves her and is thirteen years younger than her), it was only curiosity in finding out the results of those relationships and because I really liked Summer & Davis's characters that had me pushing through to finish this novel.

Overall, I thought it was cute but I was hoping for more. Therefore, I recommend it to those who are fans of Ms. Graykowski or a light-hearted romance.

Chopin's Funeral March droned on her iPhone. Her mother's ringtone. Summer didn't reach for the phone. Her latest strategy in mother-daughter relations was to avoid Lillian Summerville Ames like she avoided self-mutilation, handling uranium, and reality TV. It was all about choices. And she was choosing to be an orphan. ~ within Chapter 1

Idolizing In: Corrigan Falls Raiders Series, Book 1

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 1108 KB | Expected Release Date: May 19, 2015 | Publisher: Entangled Publishing : Teen : Crush | Obtained: NetGalley

"Center Ice" [Corrigan Falls Raiders Series, Book 1] by Cate Cameron

Authors' Book Description : This Entangled Teen Crush book contains adult language, underage drinking, sexual situations, and crazy squirrels. It may cause you to become a fan of hockey—or at least hot hockey players.

The hometown hockey hero won’t know what hit him…

Karen Webber is in small-town hell. After her mother’s death, she moved to Corrigan Falls to live with strangers—her dad and his perfect, shiny new family—and there doesn’t seem to be room for a city girl with a chip on her shoulder. The only person who makes her feel like a real human being is Tyler MacDonald.

But Karen isn’t interested in starting something with a player. And that’s all she keeps hearing about Tyler.

Corrigan Falls is a hockey town, and Tyler’s the star player. But the viselike pressure from his father and his agent are sending him dangerously close to the edge. All people see is hockey—except Karen. Now they’ve managed to find something in each other that they both desperately need. And for the first time, Tyler is playing for keeps…

My Book Review : 5 out of 5 stars!! This novel reels you in with crazy squirrels than hooks you with a romance that is intensely sweet. When Tyler and Karen meet, their lives are stacked against them. As their relationship grows, they decide what they really want for themselves and what they are willing to do to help accomplish their goals.

I was riveted by this dramatic YA novel. Karen’s life is in turmoil; she just lost her mother in a car accident and is now living with her father’s “perfect” family. Never meeting her father prior to the accident, she doesn’t know how to cope other than with her daily running. While running she meets Tyler and they quickly go from “friends” into a relationship that seems to help them both. Yet, Tyler’s life isn’t much better than Karen’s is. He’s a hockey player with a good chance to make it into the NHL after this final year, but with a father and agent demanding everything and more from him, the pressure is getting to be too much to handle. Both (with the help of Karen’s “new” family) find that being together makes them stronger and better to equipped to handle whatever/whoever comes their way.

I loved Tyler and Karen’s banter. They were a playful fun couple that were fun to read! I HIGHLY recommend this novel to those looking for an intense YA contemporary romance!

Author's Novel Extras : Another cover! | Oooh! A pretty! | Things Are Heating Up on the Ice…and Off the Ice | #1 Best Seller!

Book Teaser(s) :
"The kids don't have allergies, so it wouldn't be in theirs."
"Of course no allergies," I agreed. That would be a flaw, and imperfections were not allowed in this household. I was tempted to find a way to expose them to angry squirrels just to test the theory, but it seemed like a pretty complicated plan would be required.
I followed Will out to the bottom of the staircase and waited for him there. I'd never been upstairs in this house. I mean, I'd only lived there for about a week, so it wasn't a huge deal. My bedroom and a small bathroom were in the basement, food and the doors to outside were on the main floor...that was all I needed. And absolutely all I wanted. These people were strangers, and there was no need for me to see their bedrooms. Not unless I was putting squirrels between their sheets. ~ within Chapter 1 - titled 'Karen'

"Reap & Repent" [The Reaper Series, Book 1] by Lisa Medley

Author's Book Description : They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! All her life Ruth has known she was different, especially with her ability to see other people’s auras. However, since she was twelve-years-old, when she witnessed her father’s death, she has been alone keeping herself away from people and afraid of her ability. Now, an adult with a PhD Ruth’s life dramatically changes after her mother dies and Deacon—a two hundred and six year old reaper—inserts himself into her life to show her that she is a reaper too. Yet, as their time together brings them from one extreme circumstance to the next and their connection exponentially grows, they’ll have to decide what they are willing to do to keep one another safe…

Intense and dynamic with a more unique setting then I am use to reading, it become intrigued from the very beginning. Ruth is a surprising character because in the beginning she is not what I would have expected as a leader, very scared of everything around her even herself in a way, yet as her determination grows to learn more while she gains the relationships with Deacon and Nate she becomes a force to be reckoned with. I liked how unflappable she was when it came to those she cares about. Learning about being reaper and the hierarchy of it all was interesting, especially seeing it all through Ruth’s eyes.

While I found Deacon to be one hunk of a man, he’s also a bit over confident in his abilities so much so that when Ruth comes into the equation he falters quite a bit. Nevertheless, I liked reading about Ruth and his growing relationship. It was fast-paced, intoxicating, and relentless. Very hard not to root for them!

I will say that this is a “never-ending story” it seems. Meaning that while Deacon and Ruth’s personal story basically concludes with this novel, there are still leftover questions about Ruth along with what will happen to her friends and her from this point forward. Basically, the reader is left with a whole bunch of intrigue with hopes of what is next to come. I’m definitely curious! =0)

Overall, I recommend this novel and series to those looking for an intense fantasy romance based around “good” vs “evil.”

    -- On a side note --
When thinking about Ruth’s parentage (which you don’t really find out in this novel) I kept thinking of Star Wars’ Luke and Leia while kind of believing/hoping that Nate and Ruth would turn out the same way, miraculously find out that they were siblings.

Her own experience was proof that not everything was black-and-white.
Most people said that they didn’t believe in the supernatural, but if they believed in God, they should at least believe in the possibility of everything else. If God, then why not other supernatural entities: Satan? Angels? Demons? Vampires? Werewolves? Reapers? It was a slippery slope for sure. Open one door and no telling what might come through it. ~ within Chapter 4
It was just too much. Way, way too much. Ridiculous actually. The stuff of fairy tales or nightmares, she thought. Yes, nightmares. And the man in the next room? What about him? Was he the prince or the villain of this story? Time would tell. She prayed for the prince because if villains kissed that good, she was screwed. Utterly and completely. ~ within Chapter 8

    About the Author :

Lisa has always enjoyed reading about monsters in love and now she writes about them, because monsters need love too.

She adores beasties of all sorts, fictional as well as real, and has a farm full of them in her Southwest Missouri home, including: one child, one husband, two dogs, two cats, a dozen hens, thousands of Italian bees, and a guinea pig.

She may or may not keep a complete zombie apocalypse bug-out bag in her trunk at all times, including a machete. Just. In. Case.

    Book Excerpt :

“I want answers. In the hospital, I sensed something about you when we met… Your mother was Mary Scott. Correct? She died in that hospital room while you were there?”

“I didn’t do that. It wasn’t my fault,” she blurted out.

“Okaaay,” he proceeded cautiously. “Did you touch her before you left?”

She considered him, her mouth going dry. She had touched her. She’d given her that final kiss on the forehead.

    “Yes,” she whispered.

Ruth couldn’t look at him as she began to realize what all of this might mean. Had her bizarre handicap really killed her father, and now her mother, too?

    She was a killer.

“You’re not a killer,” he said, rolling his eyes.

“I thought you couldn’t read minds!” She sobbed, tears choking her throat closed.

    It’s my fault. I AM a killer.

“You’re not,” he insisted. “I think you’re a reaper, like me.”

Her heart starting beating faster and her vision started to go blurry around the edges. The whole room sped down a black chute into darkness. She was going to pass out. She was going to pass out with a strange supernatural man in her house.

    God help me.
