Disappointmentville: The Ex Games by Jennifer Echols

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 486 KB | Release Date: September 2009 | Publisher: Simon Pulse

"The Ex Games" by Jennifer Echols

My Book Summary : Four years ago, Hayden and her family moved from Tennessee to Colorado. During that time, she was in seventh grade, just recovered from a broken leg, and was swept up in being Nick's girl -- who was the hottest & richest boy at her new school -- even though they've only been on a few dates. But while on a date at the local movie theatre she found out that the only reason Nick was dating her was because of a bet with his friends, and once she found out instead of crying she bitched him out in front of everyone at the theatre (including a lot of kids from their grade).

Now they’re exes and over the years they have gotten into a habit of flirting, Nick playing tricks on her, and arguing/fighting with each other. However, during the day before their high school’s winter break they both find themselves in the hallway talking to each other and sitting mighty close together. Something’s in the air but Hayden isn’t quite sure what. She has wanted to be with Nick again ever since they had their fight four years ago but things always got in the way. Plus, it doesn’t help that she’s not sure she can trust him. Also, even though they both happen to be single right now, ever since they broke up, Nick’s longest relationship lasts only about two to three dates, and Hayden doesn’t want to just end up like all of his other girls.

During winter break Hayden wins a snowboarding competition, afterwards she celebrates with her friends, their boyfriends, and Nick. While they are all talking about her competition Nick says that she only won because she was against girls, but if she went up against a boy of her age bracket she would loose. This, of course, starts an argument between the girls and the guys, and ending with Nick and Hayden going against each other that following Saturday (Valentine’s Day) in a comp to see who’s the better boarder.

While the pressure for who will win the comp builds and it seems that the whole town is taking a side, Hayden and Nick go back and forth on getting together again or just arguing with each other and staying sort-of friends. On top of that, Nick is having family issues and Hayden is trying to conquer her fear of heights ... will they be able to fight the odds and realize what is happening between them? Or will they not make up and keep playing the game they’ve been playing since they broke up in seventh grade?

My Book Review : 2 out of 5 stars, because I liked the concept but Nick and Hayden bickered way to much for me to enjoy it. It was like the first time someone said something wrong the other person would chop off the other's head by any means necessary. However, I did like the relationship between Hayden and her younger brother ... their back-and-forth was very entertaining. =0)

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Forget You

Book Teaser(s) :
Hayden, she's a red-haired lass
Doing nose-grabs by the score
Gonna kick some Krieger ass
Maybe she needs one day more
Wants to snowboard off the jump
Not today, she's filled with sorrow
Scared she'll lose her steeze and biff
Gonna kick some ass tomorrow. ~ within the Chapter titled 'lemon grab'
"Dish, Hayden," exclaimed a gossip-seeking girl who skied directly into my path. "It would be soooo cute if you and Nick got together after he sealed your backpack inside that plaster of Paris volcano last year."
Liz giggled and elbowed me. "I'd forgotten all about that one!"
"But my friends say no way," the girl went on. "Nick hates you. Which is it?"
I shrugged. "I guess you'll have to ask Nick." And if she found out, I hoped she'd pass that info along to me. ~ within the Chapter titled 'jib'

What was I thinking?: Perfectly Dateless: A Universally Misunderstood Novel by Kristin Billerbeck

Format: Paperback | Pages: 257 | Release Date: July 2010 | Publisher: Revell

"Perfectly Dateless: A Universally Misunderstood Novel" by Kristin Billerbeck ( I read this as a part of Smitten With Books ARC Tours)

What was I thinking? : Well, the cover was cute and the product description that Smitten With Books ARC Tours gave was cute too. I truthfully thought it was going to be a sweet/cute YA novel that I would breeze right through. Instead it was like I was beating my head up against a wall, just trying to finish the book at my normal reading pace, when all I wanted to do was stop. =0P

My Book Summary : Daisy's life is based around her family and her beliefs, with that being said she has a lot of rules that her parents want her to live by. For the most part, she understands their fears, but after seventeen years being the "perfect daughter", she wants to spread her wings a bit more. So, her goal for her last year of high school is to get a date and go to Prom!! It's more so she will be able to say that she went more then anything, but to help her find the right guy she has a 'Prom Journal' to help her out. Her biggest problem is that her parents won't allow her to date, so she not only has to find a guy, but she has to convince her parents that this will be for the best.

Before her senior year, she chooses five guys who she has set her sights on being her prom date. And once the school year beings some of them start getting crossed off her list quickly. But her main person that she wants to go to prom with is Chase. She has been in love with him since kindergarten and he has always been sweet to her. However, she doesn't really know how he feels about her and soon the most popular (and meanest to Daisy) is falling all over Chase looking like Daisy might not have a chance. To top it off a new guy (in her grade) Max has set his sights on her.

In addition, Daisy and her best friend make plans on becoming more noticeable, but in doing so some of the decisions that are made have some consequences that they didn't expect. Will Daisy finally get to have more control over her life, and be able to attend prom with a date? Or will her parents succeed in keeping choosing her life and future for her?

My Book Review : 1 out of 5 stars. I must be a part of the group of people who have misunderstood this book since I just didn't like it at all. I dunno, I mean the message of the book was good. And don't get me wrong I have read some Christian fiction books before and there were a few that I did like. But this one rubbed me the wrong way I guess. I really can't stand "preachy" books and Daisy's parents were very "preachy". However, I will admit that I liked how Daisy dealt with her parents, and she was a good main character. I'm not to sure about her best friend Claire. I really think Daisy should have found a new best friend, since while I thought Daisy's parents were "preachy", Claire pushed her views onto Daisy too and I have never liked that about people.

Side note -- I just have to say ... where can I order myself a Max?! ALSO -- she has a great "fairy godmother" of a boss, which after you read the explanation of him is kind of surprising. =0)

On the other hand, when going to Amazon.com there were quite a few positive reviews on the book -- so those of you who are fans of Christian books might like and appreciate this book more so then I did.

Book Teaser(s) :
Things are not looking from a male perspective. Gil had a girlfriend in high school, which makes me think I need a boyfriend, otherwise how is a guy going to know he has to ask me to the prom? I mean, without a boyfriend, I'm throwing caution to the wind, leaving it all to chance. And that is just not me. I don't take chances.
All I know is the closer prom gets, the more pathetic my life becomes and the tighter my parents' grip seems to be. I am desperately close to losing all sense of sanity. Maybe that's too dramatic for four days of effort, but the results? Ugh, the results!
~ within Chapter 6

... come feel this magic i've been feeling since i met you ...

I'm not sure if this happens to every girl ... but the lucky ones (like me) get to grow up with guys who aren't related to her and yet are like family. That's how it is for Belly in "The Summer I Turned Pretty" by Jenny Han.

This 15 yr old lives her life for the summers she spends at a beach house with her mom, brother, and her mothers best friend with her sons. Growing up she has always been the youngest in the pack and the only girl. Over the years she has tried to be included and the summer that she turns sweet 16 things finally change, especially when everyone realizes that she has grown up and isn't a little girl anymore.

When you always grown up thinking you were the ugly duckling ... and now your not ... how can you get everyone else to see it too?

Belly is a great character ... brave in her own way ... loving to those around her ... and never gives up.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars. To find out more about this book or other books by Jenny Han check out her website.

My best friend to me was more like a brother ...

A story that warms the heart and can still be ... funny ... about friendship ... about love and first loves ... about family ... and more. "My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins, & Fenway Park" by Steven Kluger is a really great book. I usually love books that are written completely out of letters / IMs / Emails / notes .... etc. and this one is no exception.

It's a book about three friends who are in 11th Grade writing an essay about their most excellent year as their college essays, and the year they talk about is their freshman year of high school where all their lives get turned upside down. Anthony/TC/Tick is a jock who gets along with everyone. Augie is an extrovert to the extreme and would do anything for Tick his "brother". Alejandra/Alé is independent and opinionated but finds out what true friendship can be like. I think everyone would enjoy this story, here is a small excerpt to show you just how great it is:

Even though I should have listened to Augie when he told me that Alejandra needed special handling, I didn't. Instead on the first day of school I stuck a note into her social studies book.

DEAR ALLIE: I'M CONSIDERING A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU. AND BY THE WAY, FORGET THAT MRS. FITZPATRICK CALLS ME ANTHONY. YOU CAN CALL ME T.C. - T.C.

After phys ed there was a vanilla envelope on my desk with purple writing on it that looked like it came from the principal's office--and I usually don't get called in there until at least November.

Dear Anthony,

I appreciate your recent interest, but I'm not accepting applications at this time. Your letter will be kept in our files and someone will get back to you if there is an opening.

Thanks for thinking of me.

Respectfully, Alejandra Perez

P.S. It's not "Allie." It's "Alé."

Soo cute! =0) It gives you the usual teenage drama ... along with other things not every kid has to deal with. Definitely I give this book 4 out of 5 stars!! To find out more about Steven Kluger and/or his other books then check out his website.

I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairytale

Have you ever felt like you had a perfect boyfriend and you never understood why he was with you? I know I have. However, my boyfriend(s) growing up were never as 'perfect' acting as Lauren's in "Bloom" by Elizabeth Scott. Lauren has been together with Dave for almost a year and a half. And even though he is 'perfect' and treats her right ... things with them just never amount to much. She doesn't understand why he's with her. Then a person from her past comes back into her life that she hasn't seen for at least 10 yrs or so .... and he lights something within her. Making her be able to be herself in a way she hasn't been able to be with anyone in a very long time. But as she gets closer to her old friend, the thing she has to deal with but doesn't know how is does she want to give up the life she has let it become or does she want something more?

Bloom gets 4 out of 5 stars. Very cute. The characters were well written and you just wanted to find out more.

Tis life in the slow lane ...

Well this past Friday I found out that my position is moving from Full-Time to Part-Time. Which I am still upset about and sometimes I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack with all the stress that I feel in my chest. So, I've been going to the library lately (since I need to conserve my money till I get either a better job or some part-time jobs) to keep my mind off the negative things. In the past few days I've already finished reading "Dreamland" by Sarah Dessen, "Honey, Baby, Sweetheart" by Deb Caletti, and "How to Be Popular" by Meg Cabot. All of those books were cute ... but nothing great to report about them. I am getting "Tempted" (from the House of Night series) by PC and Kristin Cast tomorrow since I pre-ordered it (YAY!!!) ... but other then that I need to start picking them up from the library. Any other books you might be able to recommend for me??

But anyways ... I'm now job hunting ... for anything that will make up for the money I'm loosing out on. *shakes head* Hopefully things will work out for the better! =0)

Made the Grade: Perfect Chemistry Novel, Book 1

Format: Paperback | Pages: 357 | Release Date: 2009 | Publisher: Walker & Company

"Perfect Chemistry" [Perfect Chemistry Novel, Book 1] by Simone Elkeles

My Book Summary : To those who don't know her Brittany is her high school's golden girl. She has blond hair, high class clothes, rich parents, a hot ride, she's dating the football star, and she seems just about perfect. However, her home life is completely different. Yes, her parents are still rich, but with an older sister with a disability her parents (especially her mother) put more pressure on her to make sure she acts/looks perfect so that nobody has the ability to start talking bad about them. Because of this facade she has been putting on for others outside her house, it has made it so she doesn't let many people (if any) get close to her.

Alejandro (Alex) lives for the day since he is never sure if he'll live to see the next. When he was six-years-old his father died in front of him, and he swore he wasn't going to be anything like his father, but now 12 years later he's in the same gang (Latino Blood) as his father was. He doesn't want to be a part of Latino Blood, but to make sure he protects his family he is and he know that the only way out would to be beaten to death by the members or killed by someone outside of his gang, and neither look like interesting options. Plus, nothing is more important to him then his family.

Now it's their senior year in high school and they get paired up together as Chemistry partners, despite their objections to their teacher. Working together at first is hard since they both have their own opinions of each other. However, as time passes they find that despite their lifestyles they have more in common then they originally thought.

Soon they start to find being together comes with a price of friends, family, and the loyalty to those they originally believed were there for them. Thankfully their best friend still have their backs up until the end, but how will they be able to deal with a town that is set out against them? And when Alex finds out more about his father murder all those years ago, will he be able to avenge his father or will his fate be the same as his father's?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This story is kinda like "West Side Story" since you have the gangs (even though Brittany or her family isn't involved in one themselves) and the romance where everything is set up against them. I like that the book is written from both view points of the main characters! I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, mostly because I saw the author video for it (which is below) and the Brittany character was portrayed as a really flighty person, however once I started reading the book I feel in love with the main characters! They had more depth then I expected (because of the video) and I started routing for them immediately! =0)

Author Book Trailer :

If you can't see/watch the above video then click here to watch it.

If you can't see/watch the above video then click here to watch it.

Book Teaser(s) :
"So you understand why I'd freak out if my parents find out we're . . . friends."
"You'd get in trouble? Shit, you're eighteen. Don't you think you can be friends with who you want to by now? The umbilical cord's been cut, you know."
"You don't understand."
"Try me."
"Why do you want to know so much?"
"Aren't chem partners supposed to know a lot about each other?"
She gives a short laugh. "I hope not."
Truth is, this girl isn't what I thought she'd be. From the moment I told her about my dad, it was as if her entire body sighed in relief. As if someone else's misery comforted her, made her feel as if she wasn't alone. I still can't understand why she cares so much, why she chooses the I-am-flawless facade to show the world. ~ within Chapter 24
