Made the Grade: The King’s Riders Series, Book 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 4114 KB | Release Date: February 21, 2013 | Publisher: Paper Dragon Publishing | Obtained: Amazon.com

"Sword’s Call" [The King’s Riders Series, Book 1] by C. A. Szarek

Author's Book Description : For generations, the Ryhans, ruling family of the Province of Greenwald have been keepers of a sword rumored to possess enough magic to defeat kings. Lord Varthan, a former archduke and betrayer of the king, covets the sword and invades Greenwald.

Lady Ceralda Ryhan, daughter of the murdered duke, gains the sword and flees, trusting only her white wolf, Trikser—magically bonded to her. Cera needs nothing more to aid in her fight.

Jorrin Aldern, half elfin and half human, left his home in the mountains of Aramour to find his human father who disappeared twenty turns before, but finds Cera with Varthan and his shades on her tail instead. His dual heritage and empathic magic will tempt Cera in ways she never thought she’d desire. But can he convince her trust and love can pave the path to redemption or will the epic battle end in tragedy and evil conquer them all?

Cover Art for "Sword’s Call" by Nicole Cadet

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars! Ceralda (Cera) is out for revenge. Her whole family has been brutally murdered while she was away and now she is on the run with hope of killing the man who murdered them along the way. While on her way to her Uncle's castle, Cera meets a half-elfin empath named Jorrin, who decides to help her accomplish her quest. They grow very close during their journey. Yet, are they willing to open up to one another for good or will they muddle up the best thing that could happen to them? Also, will Cera be able to exact her revenge or will her courage falter?

I was familiar with Ms. Szarek's writing style prior to purchasing this novel when it was on sale. I found that when it comes to this novel I enjoy its plot, the world everything was set in, and the characters. However, what was annoying was some of the drawn out character descriptions and how the main characters (Cera & Jorrin) always seemed to think that not communicating was the best course of action for them. *shakes head* Nevertheless, I'm glad I stuck with it as it really built up the series well.

As for Cera & Jorrin's relationship, I thought when they did actually talk to or followed through on their lust for one another then they were great. It just they are both SOO stubborn that when they get upset (which happens quite a bit) their communication goes out the window, which made me want to smack them both upside their heads by the end of the novel.

Overall, I DO recommend this novel and series to those looking for an eclectic fantasy romance!

“Trikser.” Her smile was brilliant when the wolf looked at her, tail wagging. Jorrin’s heart quickened. “Want to go outside?”
Her bondmate rose to all fours and headed for the door before either of them. When they didn’t come immediately, he glanced over his shoulder.
“See? He understands me.” Cera threw him a smug look and crossed her arms over her breasts.
Jorrin chuckled and shrugged.
They slipped out the door, leaving Hadrian and Avery deep in discussion. Neither seemed to notice that they’d left.
“All right, then, elf-boy. Show me what you got.”
He laughed and had to restrain himself from kissing the look off her face. ~ within Chapter 6

Made the Grade: Silver Creek Series, Novella 3 / Book 3.5

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 692 KB | Expected Release Date: November 18, 2014 | Publisher: Penguin Books : Berkley : InterMix | Obtained: NetGalley

"Unwrapped" [Silver Creek Series, Novella 3 / Book 3.5] by Maisey Yates

Author's Book Description : (Sarah's Book)

In USA Today bestselling author Maisey Yates’s latest Silver Creek Romance, a naughty Christmas wish turns into something so much more...

Kindergarten teacher Sarah Larsen has spent her whole life being the good girl. But now, she’s ready to do something bad. So wearing the shortest, tightest black dress she owns, she marches over to the nearest bar to fulfill her Christmas fantasy: a wild night with a total stranger.

Walker Callahan moved to Silver Creek to start fresh. He doesn’t want to bring his baggage into a relationship, so an evening of fun with the sexiest welcoming committee ever is just what he needs.

They were both in it for one night with no strings attached.. But when Sarah discovers that Walker is the father of her new student, things turn deliciously complicated. Can the cold winter nights thaw two frozen hearts?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. Sarah has been living a shadow of her own life. Now that her domineering Grandmother has passed away, she plans to live life to the fullest. Her first step is to pick up a guy at the bar and have sex for the first time. However, after it's all said and done with one handsome stranger named Walker; she finds that he won't be much of a stranger after all. Will they be able to deal with the close proximity or give into temptation ... in more ways than one?

Even though I knew this was a novella prior to reading it I felt that the plot just doesn't flow right. At times the plot felt too rushed while at other times too slow, which made it difficult for me to really enjoy. But what held me to sticking with this novella and liking, as much as I did was Sarah. She was fearless this whole story through, especially when it came to finding out what life has in store for her and to not let another moment slip by. In addition, I liked how forthright she was about her love for Walker and Kayla. Sarah shows that even if she's being turned down she can own her love for them no matter the cost.

I only recommend this novella to those who are fans of this series and/or Ms. Yates.

Feasted On: Netherworld Series, Book 2

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 1002 KB | Expected Release Date: April 28, 2015 | Publisher: Secret Cravings Publishing | Obtained: Secret Cravings Publishing

"Up In Flames" [Netherworld Series, Book 2] by Olivia Hutchinson

Authors' Book Description : Feared dragon, Liam McIntyre, is resolved to stay out of the conflict between his neighbors, the fae of Péine and the shifters of New Freedom. That changes as soon as he sees the helpless woman tied to a stake in the middle of the fae village. The mysterious woman leaves him wanting and he is determined to keep her.

For Heidi Corrigan, the mountain getaway with her friend to New Freedom is her first vacation. It may also be her last when she's kidnapped by a group of fae warriors determined to burn her as a witch. Rescued by a sexy dragon, Heidi must find her way back to New Freedom, but her new dragon protector has other ideas in mind.

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars!! Find out more about the Netherworld in this intense fast-paced novel. Heidi (a human) wants to get away from everything for a bit so she decides to go on a "wilderness vacation" with her best friend, Maggie. However, one misstep while running away from a bee has her captured by an angry group of fae, tied to a stake, and is set to be burned alive in the morning. All because the fae believe, Heidi's a witch even though she's not one. Liam (a dragon shifter) is in the fae realm so he can gather info on what they're up to, but once he sees Heidi all his plans change. Yet after he rescues her, will he be able to convince her to stay with him or will their differences force them to stay apart?

While I read "Up In Flames" (BOOK 2) in this series, hadn’t read "Once Bitten" (BOOK 1) yet, and didn't feel lost in the plot, I would still recommend reading this series in order so you'll understand its backstory a bit more. I liked how the plot transitioned and how Liam and Heidi's relationship grew. From the first time they see each other you can't deny that they have a remarkable connection. The more they interact with one another the stronger their connection grows; it was intriguing to read about. I really liked them together. In addition, it was interesting to read about "mates" in this series. I'm curious to see what will happen next.

I recommend this novel and series to those looking for a new take on the paranormal romance!!

An evil, horrid buzzing that made her heart stop in pure, unrestrained fear.
She jerked her head toward the noise but didn’t see anything at first. It wasn’t until the honey bee landed on the tip of her nose that she saw it.
Creature of Satan.
A blood-curdling scream escaped her lips and she slapped at the insect, missing it. It lifted off her nose and buzzed around her head. Heidi waved her arms and stepped away from the stupid bee.
The thing was pursuing her. One step and the bee followed. Then another step and the bee began diving at her, trying to murder her with its stinger. The buzzing was loud, no doubt calling all of its bee friends to join in a large swarm, or two.
Maggie sounded far away when she screamed her name but Heidi had no choice except to ignore her. She had a bigger problem to deal with at the moment. Heidi stepped away from the bee again, but this time there was no ground under her feet. There was only air.
The damn bee had killed her after all. ~ within Chapter 1
The waiting was slowly driving her insane. What she wouldn’t give for them to be free of the place. If she never saw fairies again, it would be too soon. She didn’t think she’d ever be able to see Peter Pan again without having nightmares. She wanted to scream I don’t believe in fairies over and over again until all of the fae dropped dead. But somehow she didn’t think it would be that easy. ~ within Chapter 4

Feasted On: Those Engaging Garretts! Series, Book 6

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 219; Kindle Edition - File Size: 694 KB | Expected Release Date: February 1, 2015 | Publisher: Harlequin : Special Edition | Obtained: NetGalley

"The Daddy Wish" [Those Engaging Garretts! Series, Book 6] by Brenda Harlen

Author's Book Description : THIS COULD BE THE MERGER OF A LIFETIME . . .

The holidays are over, but Allison Caldwell can’t stop thinking about the kiss she shared with Nathan Garrett under the mistletoe. The dazzlingly attractive playboy she’s secretly crushed on for years isn’t just off-limits because he’s out of her league; the heir apparent to the Garrett furniture empire is about to be crowned CFO—and the single mother’s new boss!

One night changed everything for Nathan. And now his executive assistant is strictly hands-off despite their intense physical attraction. Besides, Allison has a son, and Nathan’s no family man. Then why is Nathan’s head suddenly filled with fantasies of being a father? Perhaps this once-happy bachelor won’t be single for long . . .

My Book Review : 4.5 out of 5 stars!! Because of a health scare forcing his Uncle into retirement; Nathan (Nate) is finally becoming the CFO of the family business. However, that means not getting close to Allison (Alli) who is his Uncle's--now soon to be his--executive assistant, which will be hard since getting close is all he can think about. Even after learning that Allison is a single mom he still wants to get to know her more. But is this playboy willing to give up his footloose and fancy-free days for family life?

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was simply captivating in its plot especially in how it leads the reader through the novel. Then with the way, it subtly builds you up for other novels in this series ... Pretty awesome!

I found Allison and Nate to be an engaging couple, enjoyed them being together a lot. However, I felt their "official coming together moments" at the end to be a little forced. Overall, though, they made a great team and pair.

I recommend this novel to those looking for a flirty contemporary romance!!

How I Make My Characters Believable

Oh, my friend, you are asking the wrong person (or possibly the very best one) to answer this. Why? Because I cut my literary teeth on Tolkien.

Understand, I love Tolkien. His adventures remain the primary spark that lit my burning love of stories (if you’ll pardon the painful metaphor). But there was a downside: Tolkien came from a grand and stolid tradition involving flat characters, grand histories, and almost no women.

I should make a pun about ashes here, but no.

It’s really no shock that when I started writing my first stories, I also had flat characters, grand histories, and no women. That doesn’t work so well in today’s reading market. So how did I break out of that? Anime and fanfiction.

Tolkien gave me vast landscapes and enormous palettes to create, but anime gave me something I desperately needed: fleshed-out characters. Japanese artists have really mastered Vonnegut’s principle that every character must want something, even if it’s just a glass of water. From anime, I learned how to weave cute characters, dark characters, and complicated souls into plots both mystical and mundane. Creating fanfiction, I finally grasped what might be the most important aspect of character development: you have to love your character.

Even if those characters are despicable, hideous, heinous and rude, on some level, you have to love them. That means understanding the way they work; what drives them; what they love and hate; and the reasons why they do the things they do.

This transformed my writing, and my characters went from cardboard cutouts to full-fledged people. Of course, there is a risk to that, too. Fully-fledged characters tend to have a mind of their own. I’ve learned part of making them believable is to listen to them - even if that means the story I had plotted out has to change. This can be panic-inducing, but it’s always worthwhile. "Strings" certainly didn’t end the way I wanted it to, but Grey and Barry refused to act the way I’d plotted. I’m deeply glad I listened to them. Their plotline was better than mine.

So, in sum: I love my characters,I listen to them, and before I know it, they blossom into three-dimensional people whose problems are worth solving.

"The Christmas Dragon"
[Among the Mythos Series, Book 2] by Ruthanne Reid

Author's Book Description :
All Katie Lin wants is to get away from her family: from the magic, from the mayhem, and from the never-ending war.

Unfortunately, someone has other ideas, and sends her a box. A box that jumps.

The tiny fire hazard inside may just force her back to Wales – and right into the path of a dragon war, the Crow King, and at least one reluctant elf prince. Sometimes, running away just doesn’t work as planned.

My Book Review :
4.5 out of 5 stars!! Katie--a descendant of "Merlin"--just wants a normal life. However, the "normal" life she carved out for herself will never be the same when her "Uncle Merlin" leaves a mystical white baby dragon on her front porch. After that, all bets are off...

WOW!! I loved Katie and her quirky ways. This intense novella hooks you and keeps you asking for more! [READ MY FULL REVIEW & TWO TEASERS]

Book Excerpt : "The Christmas Dragon"

The box jumped.

Boxes are not supposed to jump. It’s a law somewhere, I think. Maybe Guyana. Apparently not in New Hampshire, because the box kept jumping.

I sat in my idling car, puffs of exhaust rising in my rear-view mirror, and stared at the uncoordinated box-dance. It was wrapped in the loveliest paper, too, which was a shame, because bouncing on my boot-scraper had roughened all the corners and torn one edge. The bow was big and purple and covered in small green somethings. I wasn’t close enough to make them out.

I didn’t want to be close enough to make them out.

If I didn’t do something soon, the neighbors would notice. The box probably hadn’t been jumping all morning, or there’d be a crowd. Or maybe it was already on YouTube. I didn’t know.

So much for a safe, boring life among the Ever-Dying. New Hampshire, you have failed me.

I turned off the car. Time to go see what invaded my (mostly) magic-free space.

"Strings"
[Among the Mythos Series, Book 3] by Ruthanne Reid

Author's Book Description :
Need help? You probably shouldn’t ask Grey.

He’s a runaway Fey prince in New York City. He feeds on love like some kind of vampire. He really doesn’t like people.

Then a monster hunts him down in late-night Manhattan, ruins his vacation, and forces him into the fight of his life.

He’s marked, and monsters are coming for him. Grey had no plans to be a hero, but that doesn’t matter. Sometimes, no matter what you do, you aren’t the one pulling the strings.

My Book Review :
4 out of 5 stars! Three months after “The Christmas Dragon,” book 2 in this series, we now follow John Grey, who’s an Unseelie Fey Prince, while he sates his needs in Manhattan. However, at the end of one of his “sets” Grey finds himself hunted by something to be thought of as a myth with only the “help” of humans to save him. Will his “help” be enough?

This interesting look into Grey, really sets the tone for the series and makes me wonder as to where all of these “personal stories” will lead. [READ MY FULL REVIEW & TWO TEASERS]

Ruthanne’s love of magic, urban environments, and deep space birthed a strange world with undercurrents of faith, magic, villainy, and heroism (along with swords and lasers, on occasion). Among the Mythos showcases aliens with all-too-human feelings, entire societies on the decline due to greed and fear, protagonists who might actually be the bad guys (or vice-versa), and endings every bit as messy as the world that creates them.

Ruthanne knows from experience that endings are messy. No matter how exotic the setting, how many limbs the characters have or what (if any) genders, the problems and questions addressed by a good story are very real, and that’s why they have power. If she has a theme, it is this: keep fighting, and keep pushing toward hope, because the struggle is worth the finish-line.

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 448; Kindle Edition - File Size: 1346 KB | Expected Release Date: April 7, 2015 | Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca | Obtained: NetGalley

"The Duke's Disaster" [True Gentlemen Series, Book 0.5] by Grace Burrowes

What was I thinking? : I am a fan of Ms. Burrowes, liked the book description of this novel, and hoped I'd be a fan of this novel too, but that didn't happen.

Author's Book Description : Noah Winters, Duke of Anselm, exercises the pragmatism for which he’s infamous when his preferred choice of bride cries off, and her companion, Lady Thea Collins, becomes his next choice for his duchess. Lady Thea’s mature, sensible and even rather attractive—what could possibly go wrong?

As a lady fallen on hard times, Thea doesn’t expect tender sentiments from His Grace, but she does wish Noah had courted her trust, lest her past turn their hastily arranged marriage into a life of shared regrets. Is His Grace courting a convenient wife, or a ducal disaster?

My Book Review : 1 out of 5 stars. I don't believe Noah is an awful human being as she states but I agree with the rest of Angie's review. I gave up reading at 37% because I couldn't handle Noah & Thea talking around each other but not to each other. It was aggravating.

After inheriting the dark Van Alen Legacy, Schuyler fled to Florence with her forbidden love, Jack. Now the two of them must embark on the mission Schuyler was destined to complete: to find and protect the five remaining gates that guard the earth from Lucifer, lord of the Silver Bloods.

Back in New York, Mimi has been elected Regent of a crumbling coven. Struggling with her heartache over the loss of Kingsley and with her overwhelming desire to destroy Jack, she must focus all of her energy on a perilous new threat. Vampires are being abducted and their captors are planning to burn them alive online...for all the world to see. Help arrives in the form of Deming Chen, a Venator from Shanghai, who must untangle the web of deceptions before the killers strike again.

As the young vampires struggle for the survival of the coven, they uncover a deadly secret, a truth first discovered by Schuyler’s mother during the Renaissance but kept buried for centuries. And as the Blue Blood enclave weakens yet further, fate leads Schuyler to a terrible choice that will ultimately map the destiny of her heart.

When I started reading this series last year I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but with this new take on vampires that the author has, would draw any YA lover to read her series. So ... I am addicted to this series and I cannot wait for this book to come out!! I hope Mimi will get her man back ... and I hope Schuyler will be able to keep her man. =0)
