Book Report - the Jessica Darling Series

Okay ... I just finished read the Jessica Darling series, written by Megan McCafferty, which includes 5 books (Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, Charmed Thirds, Fourth Comings, & Perfect Fifths). I started reading the first book sometime last week and then finished reading the last book this morning (with a few days waiting period for the final books to arrive somewhere in between). And all I can say it I LOVED IT/THEM!!!!!!!

Sloppy Firsts - starts out when Jessica is sixteen and has never really had a boyfriend. She's smart and "snarky" ... what's not to love. *hahaa* And in this book she starts seeing Marcus Flutie, who is the all around bad boy! Then it goes from the end of her sophomore year into summer time then into her junior year of high school ... and Marcus is back more so then ever.

Throughout the whole series it shows you Jessica's tale of her romance with Marcus ... through the good times and bad. I also love it because these characters are written as being the same age as me, so I can definitely relate to the pop culture references and what she goes through. Not that my life is exactly like hers but I definitely understand how she feels in the situations she gets thrown in.

Then in Perfect Fifths - you finally get to hear both sides of the romance as the tale goes back and forth between the characters. ♥ I really can't say anymore without giving it all away so I'll just say again ... I LOVED IT!!!!

To find out more info on this series go to Megan McCafferty's website. =0)

Here's an awesome video overview about the series ... check it out:

Made the Grade: Perfect Chemistry Novel, Book 1

Format: Paperback | Pages: 357 | Release Date: 2009 | Publisher: Walker & Company

"Perfect Chemistry" [Perfect Chemistry Novel, Book 1] by Simone Elkeles

My Book Summary : To those who don't know her Brittany is her high school's golden girl. She has blond hair, high class clothes, rich parents, a hot ride, she's dating the football star, and she seems just about perfect. However, her home life is completely different. Yes, her parents are still rich, but with an older sister with a disability her parents (especially her mother) put more pressure on her to make sure she acts/looks perfect so that nobody has the ability to start talking bad about them. Because of this facade she has been putting on for others outside her house, it has made it so she doesn't let many people (if any) get close to her.

Alejandro (Alex) lives for the day since he is never sure if he'll live to see the next. When he was six-years-old his father died in front of him, and he swore he wasn't going to be anything like his father, but now 12 years later he's in the same gang (Latino Blood) as his father was. He doesn't want to be a part of Latino Blood, but to make sure he protects his family he is and he know that the only way out would to be beaten to death by the members or killed by someone outside of his gang, and neither look like interesting options. Plus, nothing is more important to him then his family.

Now it's their senior year in high school and they get paired up together as Chemistry partners, despite their objections to their teacher. Working together at first is hard since they both have their own opinions of each other. However, as time passes they find that despite their lifestyles they have more in common then they originally thought.

Soon they start to find being together comes with a price of friends, family, and the loyalty to those they originally believed were there for them. Thankfully their best friend still have their backs up until the end, but how will they be able to deal with a town that is set out against them? And when Alex finds out more about his father murder all those years ago, will he be able to avenge his father or will his fate be the same as his father's?

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! This story is kinda like "West Side Story" since you have the gangs (even though Brittany or her family isn't involved in one themselves) and the romance where everything is set up against them. I like that the book is written from both view points of the main characters! I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, mostly because I saw the author video for it (which is below) and the Brittany character was portrayed as a really flighty person, however once I started reading the book I feel in love with the main characters! They had more depth then I expected (because of the video) and I started routing for them immediately! =0)

Book Teaser(s) :
"So you understand why I'd freak out if my parents find out we're . . . friends."
"You'd get in trouble? Shit, you're eighteen. Don't you think you can be friends with who you want to by now? The umbilical cord's been cut, you know."
"You don't understand."
"Try me."
"Why do you want to know so much?"
"Aren't chem partners supposed to know a lot about each other?"
She gives a short laugh. "I hope not."
Truth is, this girl isn't what I thought she'd be. From the moment I told her about my dad, it was as if her entire body sighed in relief. As if someone else's misery comforted her, made her feel as if she wasn't alone. I still can't understand why she cares so much, why she chooses the I-am-flawless facade to show the world. ~ within Chapter 24

Made the Grade: Elphame’s Choice [Young Adult Parthalon Book] by P. C. Cast

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 468 KB | Release Date: October 2009 | Publisher: Harlequin Teen

"Elphame’s Choice" [Young Adult Parthalon Book] by P. C. Cast

My Book Summary : This book takes up after the Divine Series (if you don't want to read the whole series, then just read "Divine By Blood" and you should be able to get caught up in the background info -- but you don't need to), set in Parthalon. Ever since Elphame (El) was born, she has been set apart from her society. Not by her own doing but because she is the first child --- in their world whom to have parents that are a human mother and a centaur father, which isn't uncommon in their world --- to be a unique mix of both her parents. Because of her physical appearance, she is said to have been blessed by their Goddess, but even so, Elphame cannot seem to ever feel like herself with anyone outside of her family, since everyone it seems to want to put her on a pedestal but never find out whom she truly is. Years pass and things don't really change until she decides to move to a run-down castle, called the MacCallan Castle, and fix it up with the help of her younger brother and others who would like to make a name for themselves. And once there she will start what fate has planned for her...

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! I really enjoyed this story!!! I loved the new characters, the mixed races, and the love interests!! *hehee* Plus, the secondary story about her brother wasn't bad either. However, I'm not that big of fan about the ending. For one thing, I would have liked to have read an epilogue since it kind of leaves everything that is happening between them up to your imagination. And for another thing, I really wish the people who died didn't since I liked them, however I think I have an inkling of what will happen in "Brighid’s Quest" because of the events that happened in this book and because I wanted them to get together more so then the two that did in this book. *sigh* Sorry to be confusing but I can't really explain it any better without giving the story away ... so you'll just have to read it! =0)

My Previous Review(s) for the authors books that take place in 'Parthalon' : Divine By Blood

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Tempted | The Avenger | Burned

Book Teaser(s) :
"They're beautiful," she whispered.
Lochlan jerked his head back as if she had slapped him. "Do not say such a thing in jest."
"Why would I be jesting?" Hating the hurt she saw in his eyes, she unlaced a hand from around his neck. "May I touch them?"
He could not speak; he could only nod his head slowly, as if he were moving through deep water.
Without hesitation, Elphame's hand lifted to touch the part of one wing that was spread over his left shoulder. ~ within Chapter 16

I run my life, Or is it running me, Run from my past, I run too fast, Or too slow it seems...

The Immortals Series by Alyson Noël

Pages: 320 | Release Date: February 2009

"evermore" [Immortals Series, Book 1] by Alyson Noël -- Ever has recently lost her parents, younger sister, and dog to a terrible car accident which she survived. Yet now she has the ability to hear the thoughts of those around her, except those of Damen the cute new boy in school, who seems to have some interesting abilities of his own, among them he's able to create tulips out of thin air. But as Damen gets closer to Ever someone from Damen's past would like nothing better then to rip them apart for good.

3 out of 5 stars. I read this because it was a Amazon.com recommendation for the other books I was reading at the time. And I liked it ... even though I think it could have been better.

If you can't see/watch the above video then click here to watch it.

Pages: 304 | Release Date: July 2009

"blue moon" [Immortals Series, Book 2] by Alyson Noël -- Ever is now learning everything she can in becoming an immortal like Damen. However, as her powers start getting stronger, his own powers are weakening and he starts distancing himself from her. Now the only way she can save him is by going to Summerland and seeing if there is anything to help him. But once she gets there will she choose to still be help save Damen or will she try to rewrite her past and try saving her family instead?

2.5 out of 5 stars. It was an okay sequel ... but I really hated the ending!!

If you can't see/watch the above video then click here to watch it.

Pages: 368 | Release Date: November 2009

"shadowland" [Immortals Series, Book 3] by Alyson Noël -- This description is taken from Alyson's website since I couldn't even finish the book: Ever and Damen have traveled through countless past lives—and fought off the world's darkest enemies—so they could be together forever. But just as their long-awaited destiny is finally within reach, a powerful curse falls upon Damen...one that could destroy everything. Now a single touch of their hands or a soft brush of their lips could mean sudden death—plunging Damen into a bleak afterlife in the Shadowland, an eternal abyss for lost souls. Desperate to break the curse and save Damen, Ever immerses herself in magick—and gets help from an unexpected source...Jude Knight.

Although she and Jude have only just met, he feels startlingly familiar. Despite her fierce loyalty to Damen, Ever is drawn to Jude, a green-eyed golden boy with magical talents and a mysterious past. She's always believed Damen to be her soul mate and one true love—and she still believes it to be true. But as Damen pulls away to save them from the darkness inhabiting his soul, Ever's connection with Jude grows stronger—and tests her love for Damen like never before...

1 out of 5 stars. OK I'll admit it ... I tried to read this book but I just couldn't get past the first two chapters. =0P So I gave up ... especially after I've read other reviews saying stuff like Amazon.com's A. Jackson who said, "Again, like at the end of the second book, I felt this book went nowhere. Ever and Damen's relationship has not progressed one bit since the end of the first book." So ... as I said I gave up, it just couldn't keep my interest and if they aren't going to move forward in the plot then I think it's a waste of a book.

I think I might be finished with this series unless the next book is drastically better. *shrug* Have you read this series? If so, what did you think of it?

Our hearts were on display, For all to see, I can't believe this is happening to me

Past secrets finally come out in "Stargazer" (part of the Evernight series) by Claudia Gray. While Bianca tries to find out the secrets that Ms. Bethany is keeping (like why she decided on admitting human students to Evernight Academy) .... other secrets of hers and those about her come into play. Lucas and her romance try to make it through during their separation the best way they can. But when friends find out what Bianca has been up to are they willing to help her out or will they turn against her? And will their romance last or will they ended up like Romeo and Juliet?

3.5 out of 5 stars. This one had a lot more background plot on the characters which I liked. Yet now they've definitely made it like it's Lucas and Bianca against everyone (both sides of their families) which can be good and bad. But the book ends right when it's building up to something new ... so I'm really curious as to what the next book, "Hourglass", will have in store!! Good series ... cannot wait to see what happens!

To find out more about this book, series, and/or any other of her books ... then check out Claudia's website!

This book report is all Hush, Hush...

Well, yesterday I finished reading Hush, Hush, by Becca Fitzpatrick. It's the first novel in her first and latest series about immortal beings and fallen angels. I really liked the main characters Patch and Nora. Patch is of course a bad boy with a good heart [even though he doesn't want to admit to it] and Nora is a good girl who tries to do the right thing always.

I loved that the setting was in Maine since ... HELLO I'm from Maine!! ... I love when I can get another view on that area I never would have thought of. *sigh ... memories*

The only problem I had with the novel was Nora's best friend Vee ... she was just way to goddamn pushy. I just wanted to smack her ... especially 20% of Nora's problems were from Vee making up things ... she just needed to shut up sometimes. It was very annoying. =0/ But I digress.

Basically for me the book had too many twists and turns for me to either keep up with it or like it during the first to the middle half of the book .... but from the middle to the end it finally got better ... so all in all I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Definitely I plan on reading the sequel to this book called Crescendo .. when it comes out since like I said I did love the books ending [and no not just because it ended ... it was really good!! =0) ]!! Put it this way because I loved the main characters that kept me reading the book. ♥

To find out more from Becca Fitzpatrick check out her website.

Made the Grade: Low Red Moon by Ivy Devlin

Format: Paperback | Pages: 196 | Release Date: September 2010 | Publisher: Bloomsbury Children's Books

"Low Red Moon" by Ivy Devlin (I read this as a part of Smitten With Books ARC Tours)

My Book Summary : Avery has spent most of her life living in the woods. Her parents have a piece of land with a house that was built one room at a time, everything is just so quaint and peaceful that she never had any regrets about the way she grew up. But now her life has suddenly changed because of her parent’s murder. She was there during the murder but all she can remember was seeing silver and blood. Lots and lots of blood.

She moves into her grandmother's house, a woman who she doesn't know that well anymore, and tries to understand what had happened in her life and to her parents. Not long after her parents died a new boy, named Ben, starts at her high school. He is gorgeous, but he would never be interested in her. Then on different occasions, she watches his eyes changing from brown to silver, and she doesn't know how to explain it. And even though they might not realize it from the first time he sets his eyes on her a connection between them occurs.

With that connection, they get closer, and when they do, she finds out what he really is. Will she be scared of him now, and keep away from him? Especially when more murders occur and he might be connected ...

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars! This is an unusual take on the "Little Red Riding Hood" story we all grew up with, where the bad guy definitely isn't who you think. Creative, dark, and romantic are some of the words I'd use to describe this book. In truth, I didn't like the book during the first few chapters because of how dark it was and I'm not one to like all that goriness ... but that's just me. So ... if you like a good mystery novel then I'd recommend this book for you!

Book Teaser(s) :
Teaser 1
"I heard a wolf, and I---"
"You heard a wolf? How could you hear that? You live in town."
"I'm used to hearing them, so I guess I know what to listen for," I said. "I live---lived---near your great-uncle, remember? The woods are deeper there, without so much---" I gestured toward town, toward Renee's house off in the distance.
"Right," Ben said, standing up. "I need to go."
"Oh, okay," I said, and sank back against the tree, ready to watch him go.
But he didn't leave. He just stood there. ~ within Chapter 8
