What was I thinking?: Perfectly Dateless: A Universally Misunderstood Novel by Kristin Billerbeck

Format: Paperback | Pages: 257 | Release Date: July 2010 | Publisher: Revell

"Perfectly Dateless: A Universally Misunderstood Novel" by Kristin Billerbeck ( I read this as a part of Smitten With Books ARC Tours)

What was I thinking? : Well, the cover was cute and the product description that Smitten With Books ARC Tours gave was cute too. I truthfully thought it was going to be a sweet/cute YA novel that I would breeze right through. Instead it was like I was beating my head up against a wall, just trying to finish the book at my normal reading pace, when all I wanted to do was stop. =0P

My Book Summary : Daisy's life is based around her family and her beliefs, with that being said she has a lot of rules that her parents want her to live by. For the most part, she understands their fears, but after seventeen years being the "perfect daughter", she wants to spread her wings a bit more. So, her goal for her last year of high school is to get a date and go to Prom!! It's more so she will be able to say that she went more then anything, but to help her find the right guy she has a 'Prom Journal' to help her out. Her biggest problem is that her parents won't allow her to date, so she not only has to find a guy, but she has to convince her parents that this will be for the best.

Before her senior year, she chooses five guys who she has set her sights on being her prom date. And once the school year beings some of them start getting crossed off her list quickly. But her main person that she wants to go to prom with is Chase. She has been in love with him since kindergarten and he has always been sweet to her. However, she doesn't really know how he feels about her and soon the most popular (and meanest to Daisy) is falling all over Chase looking like Daisy might not have a chance. To top it off a new guy (in her grade) Max has set his sights on her.

In addition, Daisy and her best friend make plans on becoming more noticeable, but in doing so some of the decisions that are made have some consequences that they didn't expect. Will Daisy finally get to have more control over her life, and be able to attend prom with a date? Or will her parents succeed in keeping choosing her life and future for her?

My Book Review : 1 out of 5 stars. I must be a part of the group of people who have misunderstood this book since I just didn't like it at all. I dunno, I mean the message of the book was good. And don't get me wrong I have read some Christian fiction books before and there were a few that I did like. But this one rubbed me the wrong way I guess. I really can't stand "preachy" books and Daisy's parents were very "preachy". However, I will admit that I liked how Daisy dealt with her parents, and she was a good main character. I'm not to sure about her best friend Claire. I really think Daisy should have found a new best friend, since while I thought Daisy's parents were "preachy", Claire pushed her views onto Daisy too and I have never liked that about people.

Side note -- I just have to say ... where can I order myself a Max?! ALSO -- she has a great "fairy godmother" of a boss, which after you read the explanation of him is kind of surprising. =0)

On the other hand, when going to Amazon.com there were quite a few positive reviews on the book -- so those of you who are fans of Christian books might like and appreciate this book more so then I did.

Book Teaser(s) :
Things are not looking from a male perspective. Gil had a girlfriend in high school, which makes me think I need a boyfriend, otherwise how is a guy going to know he has to ask me to the prom? I mean, without a boyfriend, I'm throwing caution to the wind, leaving it all to chance. And that is just not me. I don't take chances.
All I know is the closer prom gets, the more pathetic my life becomes and the tighter my parents' grip seems to be. I am desperately close to losing all sense of sanity. Maybe that's too dramatic for four days of effort, but the results? Ugh, the results!

Feasted On: All I Ever Wanted by Kristan Higgins

Format: Paperback | Pages: 409 | Release Date: July 2010 | Publisher: HQN Books

"All I Ever Wanted" by Kristan Higgins

My Book Summary : Calliope (Callie) has loved Mark from afar ever since she had her first kiss with him when she was 14-years-old. Since then she has tried to gain Mark’s attention with little success. But as she got older, she became successful employee at Mark’s advertising agency, she has dated him (even though now he’s calling it a fling), he has broken up with her, and yet ... she still cannot get over him. So, being the people-pleaser she is, Callie tries to win him back over by being patient and doing little things. However, on her thirtieth birthday Mark makes her knees weak with his hotness, gives her a cute gift, and tells her ... his girlfriend (Muriel) is going to be an employee at his agency.

Callie is devastated! She leaves the office as quickly as she can to renew her driver’s license at the DMV and to just get away fast before she breaks down in front of him, only to have to deal with an rude customer at the DMV, and to talk to an unsympathetic sister on the phone.

Her best friend tells her it’s time to find someone new and gets her involved with online dating. She also, finds out that there is a new veterinarian in town, so she takes her dog into see him (planning to flirt and hopefully win him over) only to find that he just happens to be the rude customer from the DMV! She also finds out that his name is Ian and he has some personal issues of his own to deal with. Plus, it just so happens to feel like he is now everywhere she turns, and he always seems to catch her in some precarious situations. However, after one meeting with her niece’s Brownie troop visiting his clinic, they talk about her doing a little PR work for him to improve his image with the community -- much to Callie’s delight, as she loves her job!

As they work together, things start heating up between them, but Ian is adamant that he isn’t looking for a relationship -- so for a while they are just friends. Meanwhile, things at work are getting worse. Muriel is taking over -- so it seems -- and making Callie do twice the amount of work, by working on campaigns that was originally fine and having her start over with them.

Then just when things are looking up for Callie, Mark throws another wrench into the situation -- what will she do? Will she ever be able to move into a stable relationship with someone other than Mark (maybe with Ian) or will she forever want someone she cannot have?

My Book Review : 4.5 out of 5 stars!!! Okay this is about a girl who just wants to find that special someone and fall happily-ever-after. And even though she has been through some hard times, she has never lost her hope. Especially not with her happily-ever-after chair that she got when she was 8-years-old, but she saves that chair for special occasions only. Callie has an eclectic family, good friends (most of them anyway), and has a great dog. Ian has had some hard times growing up, a tough childhood, and even more issues currently. He keeps to himself but Callie is determined to open him up a bit.

What can I say I LOVED the dogs, Ian's and Callie's, the author always has some type of pet for her main characters and she hit the nail-on-the-head with these two. Plus .. Callie's grandfather, Noah, was adorable! I loved the banter between Callie and him! And last but not least ... I just have to say that Muriel and Fleur are both bitches -- I am SOOOO HAPPY with what happens to them!!

Book Teaser(s) :
Around ten, there was a ruckus in the hallway. "Give me ten minutes, Damien!" Mark snapped. Uh-oh. He rarely lost his cool in the office. Trouble in paradise? Betty Boop perked up.
Mark strode right into my office, which seemed to shrink instantly.
"Hey, Mark," I said, giving him a big smile.
He didn't smile back. Instead, he closed the door and put his hands on his hips. "What's this I hear about you doing some freelance work for some vet?" ~ within Chapter 11

Follow Jess -- August 2010 Contest/Giveaway!

Okay ... I have had this blog for over 2 years now, and because I can't make up my mind on what I want to do (i.e. my blog name being so long -- which I don't think I'll ever change), I don't really have that much of a following. SO .... here is my first contest to see if that will change!! I'm hoping to give something away, maybe, once a month or every other month ... but of course that all depends on my money situation at the time. But here we go ....

PRIZE :: "Beat The Reaper" by Josh Bazell

Author's Book Description:
    Dr. Peter Brown is an intern at Manhattan’s worst hospital. He has a talent for medicine, a shift from hell, and a past he’d prefer to keep hidden. Whether it’s a blocked circumflex artery or a plan to land a massive malpractice suit, he knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men.

    Pietro “Bearclaw” Brnwna is a hit man for the mob, with a genius for violence, a well-earned fear of sharks, and an overly close relationship with the Federal Witness Protection Program. More likely to leave a trail of dead gangsters than a molecule of evidence, he’s the last person you want to see in your hospital room.

    Nicholas LoBrutto, aka Eddy Squillante, is Dr. Brown’s new patient, with three months to live and a very strange idea: that Peter Brown and Pietro Brnwa might — just might — be the same person . . .

    Now with the mob, the government, and death itself descending on the hospital, Peter has to buy time and do whatever it takes to keep his patients, himself, and his last shot at redemption alive. To get through the next eight hours — and somehow beat the Reaper.

    Spattered in adrenaline-fueled action and bone-saw-sharp dialogue, Beat the Reaper is a debut thriller so utterly original you won’t be able to guess what happens next, and so shockingly entertaining you won’t be able to put it down.

Disappointmentville: The Ex Games by Jennifer Echols

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 486 KB | Release Date: September 2009 | Publisher: Simon Pulse

"The Ex Games" by Jennifer Echols

My Book Summary : Four years ago, Hayden and her family moved from Tennessee to Colorado. During that time, she was in seventh grade, just recovered from a broken leg, and was swept up in being Nick's girl -- who was the hottest & richest boy at her new school -- even though they've only been on a few dates. But while on a date at the local movie theatre she found out that the only reason Nick was dating her was because of a bet with his friends, and once she found out instead of crying she bitched him out in front of everyone at the theatre (including a lot of kids from their grade).

Now they’re exes and over the years they have gotten into a habit of flirting, Nick playing tricks on her, and arguing/fighting with each other. However, during the day before their high school’s winter break they both find themselves in the hallway talking to each other and sitting mighty close together. Something’s in the air but Hayden isn’t quite sure what. She has wanted to be with Nick again ever since they had their fight four years ago but things always got in the way. Plus, it doesn’t help that she’s not sure she can trust him. Also, even though they both happen to be single right now, ever since they broke up, Nick’s longest relationship lasts only about two to three dates, and Hayden doesn’t want to just end up like all of his other girls.

During winter break Hayden wins a snowboarding competition, afterwards she celebrates with her friends, their boyfriends, and Nick. While they are all talking about her competition Nick says that she only won because she was against girls, but if she went up against a boy of her age bracket she would loose. This, of course, starts an argument between the girls and the guys, and ending with Nick and Hayden going against each other that following Saturday (Valentine’s Day) in a comp to see who’s the better boarder.

While the pressure for who will win the comp builds and it seems that the whole town is taking a side, Hayden and Nick go back and forth on getting together again or just arguing with each other and staying sort-of friends. On top of that, Nick is having family issues and Hayden is trying to conquer her fear of heights ... will they be able to fight the odds and realize what is happening between them? Or will they not make up and keep playing the game they’ve been playing since they broke up in seventh grade?

My Book Review : 2 out of 5 stars, because I liked the concept but Nick and Hayden bickered way to much for me to enjoy it. It was like the first time someone said something wrong the other person would chop off the other's head by any means necessary. However, I did like the relationship between Hayden and her younger brother ... their back-and-forth was very entertaining. =0)

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Forget You

Book Teaser(s) :
Hayden, she's a red-haired lass
Doing nose-grabs by the score
Gonna kick some Krieger ass
Maybe she needs one day more
Wants to snowboard off the jump
Not today, she's filled with sorrow
Scared she'll lose her steeze and biff
Gonna kick some ass tomorrow. ~ within the Chapter titled 'lemon grab'
"Dish, Hayden," exclaimed a gossip-seeking girl who skied directly into my path. "It would be soooo cute if you and Nick got together after he sealed your backpack inside that plaster of Paris volcano last year."
Liz giggled and elbowed me. "I'd forgotten all about that one!"
"But my friends say no way," the girl went on. "Nick hates you. Which is it?"
I shrugged. "I guess you'll have to ask Nick." And if she found out, I hoped she'd pass that info along to me. ~ within the Chapter titled 'jib'

Made the Grade: Immortal Danger by Cynthia Eden

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 262 KB | Release Date: March 2009 | Publisher: Kensington Brava Books

"Immortal Danger" by Cynthia Eden

My Book Summary : Five years ago Maya was just a good cop doing her job in keeping the streets clean, but then she got turned into a vampire and her murderers that she protected the city from have now changed from human to demon - were's - and even her own kinda ... vampires. However, even though she protects L.A. mostly on her own, she rarely takes jobs helping to save others. So, when Adam tracks her down and tells her he needs her help to save his niece, at first, she tries her damnedest no to take the job, saying she's not a helper. But when he doesn't take that answer all bets are off ... she stuck into helping him whether she likes it or not.

Though after Maya taking his blood as part of her payment during that first night together they both realize that they are attracted to each other more so then they could have predicted, even with Adam's great dislike of all vampires. Plus, with Adam keeping secrets about himself from her who knows where things will lead .... but as a new day approaches and it brings them that much closer to where the child is being kept, they'll find fate as more in store for them then they ever would have believed.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! The chemistry between Maya and Adam burns the pages .... I couldn't put the book down! Especially since you are never quite sure what he has up his sleeve, but Adam was able to charm me just from the pages! And since he's secret isn't one you usually read about, I really liked how the author portrayed it! In truth I think the author could have made a trilogy or small series just out of these two characters. The only reason that this book didn't get a hire score from me was because the ending was good ... but not great ... with all the build up I wish it could have been better.

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Eternal Hunter

Book Teaser(s) :
"Maya..."
She didn't glance back at him as she said, "You were pretty out of it when we left Blood Rock, so you probably don't remember our little friend taking a drive with us."
"You knocked me out! Dragged me here---"
Her hand shoved against his chest, sending him slamming back against the tiled wall. Water soaked her arm and fingers. "Do you remember what happened the last time you pissed me off? 'Cause you wouldn't shut the hell up?" ~ within Chapter 9

Made the Grade: Change of Heart by Shari Maurer

Format: Paperback | Pages: 286 | Release Date: April 2010 | Publisher: WestSide Books

"Change of Heart" by Shari Maurer (Read this as a part of 1 ARC Tours)

My Book Summary : At sixteen Emmi has her life all mapped out. She plans on staying the star athlete on her high school varsity soccer team, play college soccer, and then help kids in other countries. She has had these plans for so long she doesn't think anything can get in her way to stop her from reaching her dreams, until she gets a cold during her team's tournament game she passes out on the field. When she gets back home, her parents take her to a doctor and he says it's just a cold and she should be getting better soon. But when she doesn't get better her parents have her get a second opinion and find out that she has 'viral myocarditis' and is going to need a new heart.

Thankfully her friends are there for her, keeping her in the loop with what was going on at school, and just being there for her. Also, it doesn't hurt that the guy, Sam, who she had just been starting to talk to right before all this started hasn't turned tail away from her, and is sticking around to see where their relationship could end up.

But as the months pass, waiting around for someone to die so she can live, she's starting to feel like she needs to claw up the walls from the boredom. To top that off she has already had to go in to the hospital thinking they have a heart for her, to find it wasn't a good match and to be sent back home to wait some more. The only thing that is helping her move forward is her dream/goals/plans of playing soccer again and everything she planned to do once high school was over .... and no one is going to take those dreams away.

While waiting and going to the hospital she meets Abe, a guy her age who has gotten a new heart two years ago and is now just making sure everything stays A-OK for him. He helps her know what to expect and is a great source to vent to. Even though she has a boyfriend and friends to vent to also, she likes having someone whom she can relate to what she's talking about.

Will she get a new heart before her time runs out? Will Emmi decide to stay with her boyfriend or will she turn to Abe instead? And if she gets a heart .... what happens if her body decides to reject it?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. The book began with a slow start and at first I didn't know if I could get into it, but about a third of the way into it the book started to get better. As a main character Emmi was okay, even though she had all right to be she was a bit over-dramatic about the situation. In truth until Abe came into the story line I really didn't like the book, and it turned out that he was my favorite character. I will say this book stuck to the truth about how a situation like this would effect a teenager, with the emotions that run along with it for the main character and those closest around her. Also ... if you read it and happen to make it to the end ... grab some tissues because it has a good but very sad ending.

Book Teaser(s) :
"I didn't sleep much the past two nights," he confessed.
"Yeah, me either."
"I was such an idiot. I'm sorry." He lowered his voice to a whisper. "The sex shouldn't matter to me, but it did. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much I like you, and how the things I like about you are way more than the physical stuff---not that I'm not attracted to you because I am---you're beautiful. You've got a great body, and a fabulous smile." He traced my dimple with his finger. "And I love your hair."
"Now I know your lying," I said, touching my baseball cap. ~ within Chapter 27

For one brief second Fiona thought this would be wonderful ... she could be paired up with long-time crush! But that thought was quickly put out when she found she was "getting married" to Todd, who just happens to be a popular jock and is dating her biggest enemy!

But along with dealing with this "marriage", she manages to pull a couple of hilarious pranks, finds out that her best friend is keeping things from her, finds that their might be more to the people she's spent years thinking badly of, and maybe she'll find out that someone really does care about her too ....

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, only because I mean I liked the book and the ending, but I really was hoping for something like that "She's All That" movie. *shrug* But for what it's worth this book was based more towards what would really have happened (possibly) in a high school situation. I really liked the characters! Fiona was a strong character, and throughout the book she stay true to herself, which I really respected. Todd had more of a personality then I expected, and I enjoyed the back-and-forth between Fiona and him. All in all I would recommend it to those who like practical teen romance stories. =0)

Book Teaser(s) :
"Why should I?" I asked, totally milking my pouty state.
"Because, Princess," he said. "Because I'm asking you to."
And that was it. Here was Senor Shitslacks, the No-necked Neanderthal, standing in front of me asking me for a favor on no greater basis than the fact that we were united in a fake marriage.
And here I was saying yes. ~ within Chapter 16
