Made the Grade: St. John Brothers / Talisman Ring Series, Book 3

Format: Paperback | Pages: 375 | Release Date: December 2003 | Publisher: Avon Books

"How to Treat a Lady" [St. John Brothers / Talisman Ring Series, Book 3] by Karen Hawkins

My Book Summary : [See below for a quote on the talisman ring.]

Chase St. John has hit some troubles, and ever since a man, named Harry, whom he assumed was his friend has been holding the knowledge of Chase's wrong doing over Chase's head for the past month or more in effort to get money out him in trade he won't confess to others what he witnessed. But Chase has had enough and decides that the only way he can keep from ruining the St. John name is by leaving England permanently (London especially). So, he tells Harry this and leaves, with only a bag of his clothes, money, a few other things, and his mothers talisman ring (his mother's most prized possession). Of course Chase is very depressed by the idea of never seeing his family again, so along the way to the ship for his departure he picks up some brandy and gets drunk. On the way though two thieves think of him as an easy mark (which he is as he's drunk), knock him off of his horse and start ruffling through his things, leaving him left for dead or at least close to it.

Harriett has some troubles of her own, her father took out a loan from the bank, then suddenly past away not long after, since then her family and her have been trying to make ends meat by either plowing fields for whatever then can tend or as of recently became sheep farmers. They only have one payment left but with Mr. Gower, the bank manager, at barking at their heels for the money every chance they get and only 2 weeks left to get the wool sheered and ready for the market, for them to have the money, they are doing everything they can to keep their family home. Even if that means making up a imaginative fiance for Harriet, that will be coming to their rescue with the money they need any day, named Captain John Frakenham.

Just when she thought her luck was getting worse she comes across Chase's horse all by himself, after rounding him up, she finds Chase not far away with a head injury and brings him home to help him. When Chase comes to he realizes that he is immediately charmed by Harriet, and decides not to tell her that he cannot remember whom he was, which makes her very suspicious. However, not long after he learns of their misfortunes and Harriet's mother tells Chase that she knows who he is, why he is Harriet's betrothed, Captain John Frakenham! At first Chase thinks this is crazy but then he goes along with the ploy and helps out the family to try and pass him off as the Captain when Mr. Gower or other locals stop by. But soon he finds he is more then playing a part, as he gets enlisted to help out with the sheep, which happens to be more work then he has ever done before.

As days pass things back in London are getting worse as Harry spreads more rumors about Chase, while at Harriet's house Chase finds that he likes the family and Harriet more with each passing day. But will he be able to leave without informing the family of his true identity? Can he keep his secrets in the past? Will him having the talisman ring make the magic come true? And will Harriet's family make it out of their debt?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. It was a very cute story. More tamed then I would have liked but it still kept my interest, wanting to see where this sweet romance between Chase and Harriet would lead.

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Sleepless In Scotland

Book Teaser(s) :
They say the St. John talisman ring was made by the fairies and given to the handsomest man in all England, one Sir Gervase St. John. The fairies spelled that ring so that whoever held it should fall madly in love. ~ right before Chapter 1
"Something, perhaps. But for a captain to forget the name and location of his ship?"
She had a point. He touched the bandage. "But I hit my head. Very, very hard."
"Yes, but we cannot afford to raise his suspicions where the captain is concerned or he'll guess----" She clamped her mouth closed and glared at Chase as if he'd done something horrid.
Chase straightened. She'd almost said it ... almost. He closed in on her, wondering if perhaps he could get the truth out of her yet. "Gower will guess what?"
Her jaw tightened. "Nothing." ~ within Chapter 10

Feasted On: Sign of the Zodiac Series, Book 5

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 515 KB | Release Date: May 2010 | Publisher: HarperCollins

"Cheat The Grave" [Sign of the Zodiac Series, Book 5] by Vicki Pettersson

My Book Summary : Jo is back and kicking ass!! However, things have completely changed in her world again ... she's now mortal. With that knowledge her troop kicked her out and she is no longer an agent of light. She also just went trough loosing her lover to his ex and has a crazy man, named Mackie that wants to kill her with his soul blade, chasing after her. Not to mention that if she makes contact with any of her old collages from the troop or any superhuman being then the leader of the troop of light, who's also her old boss, will have no problem killing her. Along with quite a few more people/beings who would like to kill her too, and one of them just happens to be her birth father.

But in some twisted turns of events she might just come to find she does have some allies she can lean on, that is if she looks in the right places...

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! Okay ... yes I skipped over 3 books in this series to read this one and I am happy I did so, especially because it was written in a way that I didn't really need to read the others (unless of course I want to know exactly what happened), since this book could probably stand alone in the way it describes all that has happened to her in recent events. But I liked this book sooo much more then the first one that I can't complain at all ... even about not reading the previous books. I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE 6TH BOOK COMES OUT!! And I REALLY hope things will work out between Hunter and Jo!

My Previous Review(s) for this Series : Book 1

Book Teaser(s) :
She smiled back, sweet and with tears moistening her eyes, before turning to Hunter. "You are a part of me now, and I will love you forever."
A relieved smile overtook his face, and faded like a ghost. I whirled on her. "I'm going to kill you!"
Olivia laughed merrily. "I believe I have the advantage here."
"Ugh, God!" I pulled at my hair. "Olivia! What the fuck?"
She laughed some more. "Yep. That's about as T-Rex brain as you can get." ~ within Chapter 5

Made the Grade: Sign of the Zodiac Series, Book 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 375 KB | Release Date: March 2007 | Publisher: HarperCollins

"The Scent of Shadows" [Sign of the Zodiac Series, Book 1] by Vicki Pettersson

My Book Summary : Joanna (Jo) grew up in a rich family but when she was sixteen she was raped and her life completely changed. Now it's her 25th birthday and her life is changing again ...

After going out on a date with a man who tries to kill her (and possibly the room-full of people at the restaurant), she meets up with her first love again and sparks fly. But then she finds out that her father, Xavier, isn't her birth father and because of that he cuts her out of her inheritance. Then the big thing is more people are out to kill her just because of who her birth parents truly are and what Jo will be able to do in the future, which means if she doesn't go into hiding (or something) she will definitely die.

However, it seems that the men after her underestimated her ... now that time has past her 25th birthday .... she is introduced to a whole new world without really knowing where she belongs. And what doesn't help is that even those who seem to be helping her, don't trust her....

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. Okay this book, I almost gave up on it. I got through the first 5-6 chapters and I was bored. But thankfully I skimmed to the good parts and kept reading since I did finally get hooked. However, you have to admit that the beginning is kinda unreal ... it's like she gets everything and nothing at all, which completely ruined it for me. But anyway ... if your like me then I recommend to keep reading it once you start since it does get better!

Book Teaser(s) :
"We all have our disguises," Warren added helpfully.
"What?" I snapped angrily. "And 'Yoda on crack' was the best you could come up with?"
"I see you did nothing about her temperament," Warren muttered.
"Some things even I can't fix." ~ within Chapter 10

Feasted On: The Iron Fey Series, Novella 1

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 211 KB | Release Date: June 2010 | Publisher: Harlequin Teen

"Winter's Passage" [The Iron Fey Series, Novella 1] by Julie Kagawa

My Book Summary : After rescuing her little brother Ethan from the Iron King's clinches, Meghan is off on a new adventure, but an adventure that she would rather not complete. The only thing that makes her go along with Prince Ash, of the Winter Court, back to his court is the sense of duty and the fact that she made a contract with him about doing so. However, as they go on they find they have a hunter after them, that will try to get to them at all costs....

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! It was a great interluding book to build up to what will happen in the "The Iron Daughter"! Cute and sweet. Makes you wonder what will happen once they arrive at the Winter Court, will Ash still protect her or will he just allow whatever the queen plans to have happen, happen?

My Previous Review(s) for this Series : Book 1

Book Teaser :
"The cold has her." Grimalkin's voice seemed to come from far away. "She is already icing over. If you do not get her up now, she will die."
My eyelids were slipping shut, even though I tried keeping them open. If they closed, they would freeze and stay shut forever. I tried using my fingers to pry them open by force, but a layer of ice now covered my hands and I couldn't feel them anymore. ~ within Chapter 3

"Spell of the Highlander" [The Highlander Series, Book 7] by Karen Marie Moning

My Book Summary : Who knew that helping her boss, while he was in the hospital, would change Jessica's life forever ....

All she had to do was sign for a package that was being delivered late at night at the university she worked for and the item needed just be delivered and locked up in her boss’s office, then she could go. However, fate stepped in instead ...

What she didn't know at the time was that inside the mirror lived a ninth century Highland Warrior, named Cian, who would do anything to get out of there and the only thing he needed was her. The only problem was would she really believe what she was seeing before the person who was after the mirror came to get it and killed her in the process. So, now this Highlander offers her his protection if she offers hers in return.

Will Jessi be able to accept the impossible and while chaos happens in the process still be able to not loose her heart to this hunk of a man ...

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars. Not as good of storyline as I had hoped. However, the characters were cute and I couldn't get enough of them. I love the world that Ms. Moning has come up with for this series and her Fever series, especially how they both intertwine together! In this book you'll learn more background information that you didn't know about if you've only read the Fever series, so I could recommend reading this book just for that alone! I can't wait to see what will be in store next!

My Previous Review(s) for this Series : Book 1 | Book 6

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Darkfever | Bloodfever | Faefever | Dreamfever

Book Teaser :
"Well, if he's a Druid-turned-dark-sorcerer and you're just a Druid, and a Druid-turned-dark-sorcerer is so much more powerful, then just how do you plan to defeat---oh! Crimeny! Shit!"
Understanding belatedly dawning, she backpedaled away from him, butting up against the rain-slicked side of the car parked parallel to hers. "I can be so dense sometimes," she breathed. "Because you're one of the bad guys, too, aren't you? You turned dark sorcerer, too, didn't you? It's the only way it makes sense."
His whisky eyes narrowed. "Get in the car, Jessica," he said softly. ~ within Chapter 12

Made the Grade: Voices of Dragons by Carrie Vaughn

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 341 KB | Release Date: March 2010 | Publisher: HarperCollins

"Voices of Dragons" [Voices of Dragons Series, Book 1] by Carrie Vaughn

My Book Summary : Have you ever wondered what it would be like if dragons lived among us? Well, for Kay that is her reality. However, in recent years humans and dragons have been isolated from each other and stayed out of each other's territories for the past sixty years because of the treaty that was signed. The only problem with that is now each side doesn't know a thing about the other, they just base what they know on fear and legion which make it so each side lives in fear of what the other might do.

For Kay, she has grown up right in the middle of it. As she lives in Silver River, Montana a town that is the closest to the border of the dragon territory in America. Also, with a father who's the sheriff of the town and a mother who works for border control, Kay knows this area really well, which doesn't hurt when she likes to seek adventure type of activities (i.e. free-climbing on the mountains the border is on).

The story starts off when Kay is partaking in one of these types of activities, she decides to free-climb in an area on the border that she knows her parents (or anyone working with them) won't be looking at. However, once she gets down and decides to wash her hands off in the river, then slips, and falls into that river taking her over the border into dragon territory .... and her life really gets adventurous!

After being in the water for a while unable to get herself out, something saves her .... a young dragon named Artegal. Artegal wants to know/learn more about humans and just really wants to talk to someone, and is happy when Kay agrees to come back to do so. Which is how they grow to become friends, but they keep it a secret since the treaty states that once one from the other side crosses the border an all out war can happen.

Nevertheless, after a couple of months the reality of their friendship comes into play when the military on the human-side starts testing the border and the dragons’ patience. Will they be able to stay friends when they are supposed to be enemies? Or maybe will their friendship show that both sides are able to live in peace once and for all?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. Not as good as I had hoped. I mean it was cute, and a VERY touching story about friendship and love. And for a good portion of the book I cried like a baby. However, I just think it could have been better. It's like Romeo & Juliet only between friends ....

Book Teaser :
"We have stories," the dragon said. "Of people with swords. They hunt us down. Seek us out. Wicked deeds."
Kay wondered what stories the dragons told about human beings. Saint George--Silver River High's mascot was Saint George--must be like the devil to them.
"Foolish, maybe," he said. "But I want to see for myself. To understand. We used to talk to people. Maybe we should again." ~ within Chapter 3
