My best friend to me was more like a brother ...

A story that warms the heart and can still be ... funny ... about friendship ... about love and first loves ... about family ... and more. "My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins, & Fenway Park" by Steven Kluger is a really great book. I usually love books that are written completely out of letters / IMs / Emails / notes .... etc. and this one is no exception.

It's a book about three friends who are in 11th Grade writing an essay about their most excellent year as their college essays, and the year they talk about is their freshman year of high school where all their lives get turned upside down. Anthony/TC/Tick is a jock who gets along with everyone. Augie is an extrovert to the extreme and would do anything for Tick his "brother". Alejandra/Alé is independent and opinionated but finds out what true friendship can be like. I think everyone would enjoy this story, here is a small excerpt to show you just how great it is:

Even though I should have listened to Augie when he told me that Alejandra needed special handling, I didn't. Instead on the first day of school I stuck a note into her social studies book.

DEAR ALLIE: I'M CONSIDERING A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU. AND BY THE WAY, FORGET THAT MRS. FITZPATRICK CALLS ME ANTHONY. YOU CAN CALL ME T.C. - T.C.

After phys ed there was a vanilla envelope on my desk with purple writing on it that looked like it came from the principal's office--and I usually don't get called in there until at least November.

    Dear Anthony,

I appreciate your recent interest, but I'm not accepting applications at this time. Your letter will be kept in our files and someone will get back to you if there is an opening.

    Thanks for thinking of me.

    Respectfully, Alejandra Perez

    P.S. It's not "Allie." It's "Alé."

Soo cute! =0) It gives you the usual teenage drama ... along with other things not every kid has to deal with. Definitely I give this book 4 out of 5 stars!! To find out more about Steven Kluger and/or his other books then check out his website.

    "Waiting On" Wednesday: You Wish

  • Today's "Waiting On" Wednesday by Jill - click here

  • "You Wish" by Mandy Hubbard
Publication Released Date: August 5, 2010

    Book Description:
Kayla McHenry’s sweet sixteenth sucks! Her dad left, her grades dropped, and her BFF is dating the boy Kayla’s secretly loved for years. Blowing out her candles, Kayla thinks: I wish my birthday wishes actually came true. Because they never freakin’ do.

Kayla wakes the next day to a life-sized, bright pink My Little Pony outside her window. Then a year’s supply of gumballs arrives. And a boy named Ken with a disturbing resemblance to the doll of same name stalks her. As the ghosts of Kayla’s wishes-past appear, they take her on a wild ride… but they MUST STOP. Because when she was 15? She wished Ben Mackenzie would kiss her.

And Ben is her best friend’s boyfriend.

This sounds like a really cute book. And if it's as good as Mandy's other books then I can't wait to check it out!

It's just the little things you do ... that makes me wanna get with you

Is it possible for you to move back into your old life after you've grown up and done so much? That is what Izzie and Nick try to figure out in "Overexposed" by Leslie Kelly. Izzie grew up being "in love" with her older sister's brother-in-law, who was only 4 years older then her .... but when she was 14 and chubby .... and Nick was 18 and sexy ... she couldn't help but have a crush ... just too bad it wasn't a mutual feeling. Almost a decade passes ... now their older, wiser, but are at points in their lives where they're looking for the next thing to do .... and both just happen to move back to their hometown. Much to each families delight but not theirs. Since Izzie got home she has been living two lives .... one where she helps out at her families bakery by day ... another where she plays a mysterious stripper by night. When they first see each other again at Nick's families pizzeria .... Nick notices Izzie right away and feels like he has to get to know her ... the only problem is he doesn't remember who she is, until after she gets mad at him and walks out the door. Later Izzie finds out that Nick is going to start being a bouncer at her club and tries to keep her secret from him so it won't get out to anyone else. ...... Does Izzie ever get over her crush? Will Nick find out who the mysterious stripper is? And the big question ..... if they meet on common ground will they stay together or will Izzie run away?

I liked the story. Izzie was a great character. 3 out of 5 stars. The only thing I didn't like was that behind the Izzie/Nick story .... there was a story of Izzie's cousin Bridget with her co-worker ... but they really didn't finish it well and just left it hanging. =0/ Which was disappointing.

To find out more about this book or other books by Leslie, then check out her website.

    I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairytale

Have you ever felt like you had a perfect boyfriend and you never understood why he was with you? I know I have. However, my boyfriend(s) growing up were never as 'perfect' acting as Lauren's in "Bloom" by Elizabeth Scott. Lauren has been together with Dave for almost a year and a half. And even though he is 'perfect' and treats her right ... things with them just never amount to much. She doesn't understand why he's with her. Then a person from her past comes back into her life that she hasn't seen for at least 10 yrs or so .... and he lights something within her. Making her be able to be herself in a way she hasn't been able to be with anyone in a very long time. But as she gets closer to her old friend, the thing she has to deal with but doesn't know how is does she want to give up the life she has let it become or does she want something more?

Bloom gets 4 out of 5 stars. Very cute. The characters were well written and you just wanted to find out more.

    When opposites attract...

So far in my major book reading lately I have found that no one else but Susan Elizabeth Phillips can write a great romance novel where every single one (thus far that I've read) deals with opposites attracting to each other (or at least that's what the characters believe in the beginning). My favorite of her novels is still "Match Me If You Can" from her The Chicago Stars books.

However, I just finished reading "Ain't She Sweet"!! And I have to say it has become my second fave out of all her books! Definitely 5 out of 5 stars! It's all about Sugar Beth (a Southern Belle who growing up has made her town resent from all the trouble she caused) and Colin (a British writer who moved to the south and when he started to try making a name for himself, met his match - not always in the best way either). The story is really charming ... and I like how Sugar Beth and Colin "overcome their demons". So-to-speak. =0)

Tis life in the slow lane ...

Well this past Friday I found out that my position is moving from Full-Time to Part-Time. Which I am still upset about and sometimes I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack with all the stress that I feel in my chest. So, I've been going to the library lately (since I need to conserve my money till I get either a better job or some part-time jobs) to keep my mind off the negative things. In the past few days I've already finished reading "Dreamland" by Sarah Dessen, "Honey, Baby, Sweetheart" by Deb Caletti, and "How to Be Popular" by Meg Cabot. All of those books were cute ... but nothing great to report about them. I am getting "Tempted" (from the House of Night series) by PC and Kristin Cast tomorrow since I pre-ordered it (YAY!!!) ... but other then that I need to start picking them up from the library. Any other books you might be able to recommend for me??

But anyways ... I'm now job hunting ... for anything that will make up for the money I'm loosing out on. *shakes head* Hopefully things will work out for the better! =0)

Disappointmentville: Playing with Fire Series, Book 3

Format: Kindle Edition | File Size: 499 KB | Release Date: August 2010 | Publisher: Samhain Publishing

"Scandalous" [Playing with Fire Series, Book 3] by Karen Erickson

My Book Summary : Ever since she was a teenager, Alexa (Lex or Lexi), has had a crush on Eric (her older brother's boyfriend). Now years later at her brother's wedding she greets Eric again planning on catching up. However, what she didn't expect was to find her attraction to him to still be strong or to find that even though he has another boyfriend now, he is finding her more attractive by the second. When they end up kissing each other, a little later at the reception, the sparks ignite between them, but once they separate Eric says they've made a mistake and walks away from her.

A few days later Alexa finds a voicemail message from Eric on her cell asking if she would like to meet up for drinks with his boyfriend (Brandon) and himself. She accepts and meets them at a restaurant, only to find that they have ulterior motives. Which are that Brandon was intrigued about Eric's kiss with her and was wondering if she would like to have some fun with them for a night?

If she says yes she might find the thing that will ease the restlessness she's been feeling lately ... they all might fall in love ... or they could ruin a good relationship between the guys and a growing friendship between each other .... would it all be worth it? Maybe so ...

My Book Review : 2.5 out of 5 stars. My favorite character was Eric ... he sounded like a great guy. The plot was good but didn't end up the way I wanted it to which is the reason for the low rating. I think if it ended the way I wanted then I would have given it a 4 out of 5 stars. *shrug* But if you don't mind reading a bit of m/m or m/f/m action then I think you'll be interested in this book.

    Book Teaser(s) :
The number was unfamiliar, and she frowned, punching a button so she could read the text message.
    I want to see you
    Frowning, she immediately texted back.
    Who is this?
    Her answer came back quick.
Correction. We both want to see you. Tonight.
Her skin sizzled, and she glanced about the room, thankful no one was lurking about.
Eric is that you? ~ within Chapter 6
