Feasted On: Victoria and the Rogue by Meg Cabot

Format: Paperback | Pages: 241 | Release Date: December 2004 | Publisher: Avon Books

"Victoria and the Rogue" by Meg Cabot

My Book Summary : Victoria has grown up with her three bachelor uncles in India ever since her parents died when she was very little. But now since she is sixteen they have shipped her off to live with her other aunt & uncle in England, and to find herself a husband. And even though her uncles made a wager as to how long it would take her to get a man to propose to her, she proves them all wrong by accepting a proposal while on the ship taking her to England!

Hugo is handsome and says the sweetest things to her ... and it doesn't hurt that he is a work-in-progress and needs her helping hand (and money) every once in a while (or more). But as she soon realizes that all might now be as it seems when it comes to her husband-to-be or his family. Especially since for a family who is on the decline (money wise), they surely do spend enough of it. Plus, it doesn't help that Captain Jacob Carstairs keeps telling her that Hugo is a rogue!!! Which just can't be! The Captain doesn't help any by always seeming to be around the corner or annoying Victoria by doing all sorts of things (especially when he calls her Miss Bee -- for being such a busy body). *sigh* What is a girl to do?

And then ..... maybe is this one situation where Victoria has it all wrong?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars! CUTE & FUNNY to the extreme! Victoria and the Captain are so cute with their arguments. And I love how this is written like a first person passage but it goes into details that make it feel like the childhood stories I grew up with (but it's definitely a young adult book).

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Avalon High | Ready or Not

Book Teaser(s) :
Becky cast her cousin a disparaging look over one slim shoulder. She had been, ever since learning of her mother's acceptance of Captain Carstair's invitation to dine, coolly indifferent about the situation. But that, Victoria was quite certain, was all an act.
Or so Victoria had thought, until her cousin's next words hit her like a slap in the face.
"If you ask me, Vicky," Rebecca said in a very sour voice, "you're the one who seems to have a problem dining at Captain Carstairs's table this evening. For I certainly don't care. My affections belong entirely to another now." ~ within Chapter 8

ALSO -- Be sure to sign up for this tour's GIVEAWAY(s) (listed below)!! [Blog Tour will run from March 9 - 27, 2015 | Giveaway ends on March 29, 2015]

"The Promise of Palm Grove" [Amish Brides of Pinecraft Series, Book 1] by Shelley Shepard Gray (aka Shelley Gray)

Author's Book Description : A young Amish woman finds herself torn between the man she’s pledged to wed and the man her heart desires in this heartwarming story of chance, duty, and choice in the face of love—the first volume in the beloved New York Times bestselling author’s new Amish Brides of Pinecraft series.

Amish bride-to-be Leona is thrilled to be in Florida, on a mini-vacation in the pretty town of Pinecraft. Her girlfriends think she’s happy because she’s away from the stress of wedding planning. They have no idea that Leona’s real joy is in being away from her fiancĂ©.

Edmund is a good man, and will make a decent husband . . . just not for Leona. The more time she spends with him and his overbearing ways, the less she wants to be his wife. Her cousins are sure Edmund is the right man for her-and their certainty makes Leona begin to doubt herself. But when a chance encounter with a wayward cat brings her face-to-face with a handsome, fun-loving Amish man named Zachary Kauffman, Leona’s faced with two vastly different futures.

Leona must decide: Does she follow the path set out before her? Or take a chance with only the promise of what could be to guide her?

My Book Review : 5 out of 5 stars!! Leona (Le)—an Amish woman who is unsure if her fiancĂ© is really the right man for her—takes a vacation to Pinecraft with her two best friends and meets a man who changes her perspective for the future.

This engaging novel keeps you wanting more from the very beginning. Even though its plot was based around Leona and Zack (Zachariah/Zachary), with their budding friendship turned romance, it also brings you into the lives of Beverly (an older Mennonite woman who runs an Bed & Breakfast) and Effie (Zack’s Amish little sister who is dealing with Perthes disease) to give you an even broader perspective on the town itself. I enjoyed it all! Beverly deals with a new owner for her Bed & Breakfast and everything that revolves around that is intriguing I can’t wait to see where it goes. Although Effie’s life is a rough one, I liked how sweet and heartwarming she was while learning about first crushes and boys.

Yet, Zack—with his generously sweet ways—and Leona made this a novel I didn’t want to put down. I liked their relationship very much. I could not get enough and hope that we’ll find out more about them as this series progresses!

I HIGHLY recommend this novel to those who enjoy Amish and/or Christian romances!

"Have a seat, Zachary," his father said, his voice a bit firmer.
Zack sat because it didn't matter how old he was, he was still his father's son.
As did his mother, though she didn't look half as serious as his father did. Instead, she looked like she was holding back a grin.
Because he didn't dare roll his eyes, he folded his arms over his chest and looked steadily from one parent to the other. "Let's get this over with, then. What do you want to know?"
"Zachary, stop being coy," his mother chided. "Tell us about this girl you are taken with."
"I'm not being coy. There's nothing to tell. Her name is Leona. She's about my age, though I haven't asked her specifically yet. She's from Ohio and she's here on vacation with her girlfriends. She's blond and she's very pretty. And that's about all I know about her. Effie shouldn't have been telling tales about me."
"She wasn't telling tales. But she did say that she likes Leona," his mother said. "Very much so."
"I'm not surprised about that. Leona is a likable person."
His mother's tentative smile transformed into a delighted grin. "Zachary! This is so wonderful-gut! I've never seen you so smitten." ~ within Chapter 10
The pull he felt toward her was so strong, Zack was pretty sure he'd drop everything in order to see her again, and soon. Even if it meant calling in Violet or Karl to help with Effie so he could make that happen.
She looked at her palm again, closed it into a fist, then started walking.
The wrong way.
He darted forward, rested both hands on her shoulders, and turned her around. "This way, Leona," he murmured. "Go four blocks up until you see the cross street, then turn right."
"Okay."
"Sure?" He really needed to go. But he really didn't want to spend the rest of his evening worrying about her wandering up and down the streets of Pinecraft.
"I'm sure." Giving him a tremulous smile, she murmured, "Danke, Zack. Today was . . . well, it was wonderful."
"Yeah," he said. "Now keep walking forward and then turn right."
She giggled.
And he thought about that giggle the whole time he ran home, making it to Effie's stop just in time to see the bus turn the corner and pull forward. ~ within Chapter 17

About the Author :

I grew up in Houston, Texas, went to Colorado for college, and after living in Arizona, Dallas, and Denver, we moved to southern Ohio about ten years ago.

I’ve always thought of myself as a very hard worker, but not ‘great’ at anything. I’ve obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree...but I never was a gifted student. I took years of ballet and dance, but I never was anywhere near the star of any recital. I love to cook, but I’m certainly not close to being gourmet…and finally I love to write books, but I’ve certainly read far better authors.

Maybe you are a little bit like me. I’ve been married for almost twenty years and have raised two kids. I try to exercise but really should put on my tennis shoes a whole lot more. I’m not a great housekeeper, I hate to drive in the snow, and I don’t think I’ve ever won a Monopoly game. However, I am the best wife and mother I know how to be.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that in God’s eyes that is okay? That from His point of view, we are all exceptional? I treasure that knowledge and am always so thankful for my faith. His faith in me makes me stand a little straighter, smile a little bit more, and be so very grateful for every gift He’s given me.

I started writing about the Amish because their way of life appealed to me. I wanted to write stories about regular. likeable people in extraordinary situations-and who just happened to be Amish.

Getting the opportunity to write Inspirational novels is truly gratifying. With every book, I feel my faith grows stronger. And that makes me feel very special indeed.

"The Proposal At Siesta Key" [Amish Brides of Pinecraft Series, Book 2] by Shelley Shepard Gray (aka Shelley Gray)

Author's Book Description : A young Amish woman, yearning for freedom, crosses paths with a handsome Mennonite celebrity in a deeply moving tale of friendship and self-discovery—the second installment in the unforgettable New York Times bestselling author’s new Amish Brides of Pinecraft series.

Penny Troyer rarely disobeys her parents. In the years since her sister’s tragic death, they’ve wanted nothing more than to keep her safe…even if it means never leaving the house.

But tonight, she’s bending the rules because Michael Knoxx, the most famous member of The Knoxx Family Singers, a traveling Mennonite Evangelical family —is scheduled to speak. Penny has heard of Michael—how he lost part of his leg in a terrible accident and uses the experience to inspire others—and knows she must meet him. So, for the first time ever, Penny stands up to her parents and goes out on her own.

Though he speaks about living life to the fullest, Michael knows he needs to take his own advice. Life on the road is grueling and Michael wants to slow down, to rest…to perhaps meet someone who sees him as a man, not just a celebrity. So when a twist of fate allows him the chance to stay a little longer in Pinecraft, Michael knows God is showing him a new path, especially when he discovers how much he and Penny Troyer have in common.

But new friendships can’t stop time. Soon, Michael’s time in Pinecraft will be over and he’ll be back on the road. Her time with Michael has brought her happiness, but will she be able to follow her heart? Or will she be faced with the one thing she’s sure she’ll never have the courage to do?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars!! Ever since her sister was murdered about twelve years ago, Penny (Pen) has lived a sheltered life a life that has recently been stifling. She is now ready to “spread her wings” so-to-speak and defy her parents’ wishes enough to make her way in the world. As Penny grows into her new life, she meets Michael, an evangelist who tours with his family to speak about the Lord and to share his story of struggle and triumph. During Michael’s time in Pinecraft Penny and he grow close, as close as “friends” could be, but once Michael’s time comes to an end will they be able to take their budding relationship and turn it into something more? Or is just being friends all they’ll be able to agree too?

I LOVED how this novel embellished on Beverly & Eric’s story from “The Promise of Palm Grove” (Book 1) while still centering on Penny & Michael’s romance. I really enjoyed seeing where the previous characters’ lives were going while getting to read about a new mix of characters too! Penny & Michael are an uplifting because of how their relationship naturally grew from how they meet, to their “working relationship,” to them falling for one another. Especially with how they help each other come to terms with the “cards they were dealt with” and inspire to make new experiences for themselves so they won’t have any regrets in their futures. It was just so sweet I could not get enough. Yet, I hate to say it, it was also so sweet that I kept waiting for another “shoe to drop” because of how nicely everything does wrap up for them. Thankfully, though, it doesn’t and I got to be swept away in their enchanting tale.

The epilogue also has a nice build up for the following novel in this series, which will be interesting to see as to where it’ll lead us next. While keeping the readers happy (me especially) as it gives you a better wrap up on Michael & Penny’s romance then I felt “The Promise of Palm Grove” (Book 1) did with Leona & Zack in that “where are they now” kind of way.

I HIGHLY recommend this series and this novel to those looking for a sweet Christian/Amish romance!

"You know, it's no wonder you speak on stage," she said sarcastically. "You certainly like to make your point."

"Joyful" [Return to Sugarcreek Series, Book 3] by Shelley Shepard Gray

Author's Book Description : A young Amish couple gets a second chance at love in New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray’s final book in her Return to Sugarcreek series.

Randall Beiler is doing his best to put his family and the farm’s needs first, even forsaking love. But though he tries, Randall knows he needs help caring for his younger siblings and keeping the house together.

When his brother offers pretty Elizabeth Nolt a job taking care of the house and cooking for the family, Randall is furious—and guilty about the way he once broke Elizabeth’s heart. But when he learns that Elizabeth and her grandmother are struggling to make ends meet, he knows the offer, no matter how painful, is the right thing for everyone.

Elizabeth wants to refuse—to stay far away from the man who hurt her—but she needs the money. Though she vows to protect her heart, spending time in the Beiler household makes Elizabeth realize that, while she’s older and wiser, her love for Randall still burns strong.

Randal, too, seems to want something more. But does he want Elizabeth because he truly loves her—or because he needs a housekeeper? If Randall sincerely wants something more, he must find a way to show Elizabeth—or risk losing his chance at love forever.

Joyful includes a P.S. section with a letter from the author, discussion questions, and a teaser from her next book.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars! Since this was the first novel that I've read from Ms. Gray's Return to Sugarcreek Series, I found that it wasn't laid out like I expected--with it's three "main" stories having it's characters all knowing of each other in some way but not really going together--yet I was happy with how it all turned out.

The lead story was about Elizabeth (Lizzie/Beth) & Randall. They used to be a couple but when Randall's family starts to go their own ways, Randall takes on the mantle of head of their family which in turn makes him feel like his relationship with Elizabeth can't continue--even though they both have strong feeling for each other--so he brakes up with her. A while (the book doesn't really say) after they brake up it becomes apparent to Randall's family that they are in need of help--mostly from a female--and feel that Elizabeth would be the prefect choice (much to Randall's dismay because he still has feeling for her). Therefore, Elizabeth starting helping out/working at Randall's house, every day there brings up old feelings and put everything between them into question. For the most part, once they finally put everything onto the table, I really liked them as a couple but it took a while within the novel to get to that point. In truth, I liked Elizabeth's relationship with Randall's family more then I liked hers with him.

The next story was about Judith & Ben. They are husband and wife--both Amish--who miscarried a few months back and are now fostering a boy (James) whose mother is serving time in prison. It's all about their relationship with each other and how strong it is, how much they think of James as their own child--even though they are only to have him for a few months to a year or so--and what they'll do once/if they have to give him up. It's very sweet how they pull together through it all; I really liked them as a couple because they seemed to complete each other.

The last story was about Bud & Pippa. Who are not Amish but living within the same community. They are slowly building into a relationship after being "sort of" friends for a long time prior. I really liked the way Bud goes about to rebuild Pippa's confidence and wooing her.

Overall, I recommend this novel to anyone who likes Christian romances!

He's brought us so much joy and happiness, even for this short amount of time."
"He has, hasn't he?"
Ben nodded. ~ within Chapter 8
"So, I gather that you don't want me here? That you would like to spend as little time as possible with me?"
He grimaced. "I didn't mean what I said exactly the way you heard it."
"Oh?"
"Yeah." He groaned as he shifted on his pile of propped-up pillows. "I'm sorry, Beth, but I'm not doing too good right now."
Hearing him call her Beth, especially when it was obvious that it had just slipped out, made much of her irritation float away. Softening her voice, she murmured, "I kind of noticed."

Feasted On: Chicago Stars Series, Book 4

Format: Paperback | Pages: 390 | Release Date: February 1998 | Publisher: Avon Books

"Dream a Little Dream" [Chicago Stars Series, Book 4] by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

My Book Summary : This book picks up just about 8 months after Book 3 in this series left off. Rachel Stone is coming back to Salvation, North Carolina; the town that she never believed she would return too. Especially after her televangelist husband fled the country so the police couldn't arrest him and died in a plane crash. However, before he died he made certain that everyone believed his wife was the one who swayed his ways to do the "devils deeds" by giving her whatever she wanted and dipping into his church funds to do so.

Since then she has changed her last name back to her maiden name and tried to make ends meat for her five-year-old son and herself. But now she's at the end of her rope and came back to the town thinking that she might be able to find where the missing money her husband stashed was so she will be able to finally settle down in a small house and put the rest of the money aside for her son's future.

In doing so, she runs into Gabe Bonner (Cal's brother), who is trying to work through his own demons (dealing with the fact that he lost both his wife and son in a car accident about 3 yrs ago) by cleaning up and opening a local drive-in. This is where the two meet when Rachel's car brakes down for good and he finds them trespassing on his property. From the beginning the two don't see eye-to-eye ... she has a never back down attitude and he just wants to be left alone. Somehow she gets herself a job helping him clean up the drive-in with him. In doing so they become closer. Gabe helps her in find a temporary place to live (his grandmother's cottage) and without her knowledge makes sure she takes care of herself (since she was looking out for her son over her own well being).

However, except for a handful of people and majority of everyone in town believes Rachel is a really bad person. Because of that belief some towns people try to do things to her to either get her to leave town or just to get revenge for what they believe she has done. Gabe becomes her protector, and when her roommate moves out of the cottage he decides to move in with her.

Will Gabe get over his demons? Will the town ever accept Rachel and her son? Will Rachel ever find the missing money?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars!! This book was GREAT!!!!!! I LOVED Rachel & Gabe as a couple!! Plus, finding out what else happened for the Bonner family was icing on the cake! Then the cherry on top was the secondary story of Pastor Ethan (Gabe & Cal's younger brother) & Kristy. =0) If I gush any more then you'll know what will happen in the book so ... I just say .... "I just can't figure out how we're going to manage our--you know. Our fling?"
"Fling?" He sounded offended. "Is that what this is?"
They rounded a bend in the road, and she had to squint against the setting sun. "It's not an affair." She paused. "Affair is too serious. It's a fling, and the point is, I don't see how we're going to manage it."
"We won't have a bit of trouble." ~ within Chapter 12
She gave no smile of greeting, no sign that she was glad to see him. "Why did you take off like that?" he snapped.
"I wasn't feeling well."
"You seem to be feeling fine now."
She didn't reply. Instead, she bent her head and began working a clump of chickweed free.
"If you wanted to leave, you should have told me. You know I don't like it when you're here by yourself."
"You can't be with me every minute. And why should you try?"
"What does that mean?"
"It means I'm not your responsibility." ~ within Chapter 19

Made the Grade: St. John Brothers / Talisman Ring Series, Book 3

Format: Paperback | Pages: 375 | Release Date: December 2003 | Publisher: Avon Books

"How to Treat a Lady" [St. John Brothers / Talisman Ring Series, Book 3] by Karen Hawkins

My Book Summary : [See below for a quote on the talisman ring.]

Chase St. John has hit some troubles, and ever since a man, named Harry, whom he assumed was his friend has been holding the knowledge of Chase's wrong doing over Chase's head for the past month or more in effort to get money out him in trade he won't confess to others what he witnessed. But Chase has had enough and decides that the only way he can keep from ruining the St. John name is by leaving England permanently (London especially). So, he tells Harry this and leaves, with only a bag of his clothes, money, a few other things, and his mothers talisman ring (his mother's most prized possession). Of course Chase is very depressed by the idea of never seeing his family again, so along the way to the ship for his departure he picks up some brandy and gets drunk. On the way though two thieves think of him as an easy mark (which he is as he's drunk), knock him off of his horse and start ruffling through his things, leaving him left for dead or at least close to it.

Harriett has some troubles of her own, her father took out a loan from the bank, then suddenly past away not long after, since then her family and her have been trying to make ends meat by either plowing fields for whatever then can tend or as of recently became sheep farmers. They only have one payment left but with Mr. Gower, the bank manager, at barking at their heels for the money every chance they get and only 2 weeks left to get the wool sheered and ready for the market, for them to have the money, they are doing everything they can to keep their family home. Even if that means making up a imaginative fiance for Harriet, that will be coming to their rescue with the money they need any day, named Captain John Frakenham.

Just when she thought her luck was getting worse she comes across Chase's horse all by himself, after rounding him up, she finds Chase not far away with a head injury and brings him home to help him. When Chase comes to he realizes that he is immediately charmed by Harriet, and decides not to tell her that he cannot remember whom he was, which makes her very suspicious. However, not long after he learns of their misfortunes and Harriet's mother tells Chase that she knows who he is, why he is Harriet's betrothed, Captain John Frakenham! At first Chase thinks this is crazy but then he goes along with the ploy and helps out the family to try and pass him off as the Captain when Mr. Gower or other locals stop by. But soon he finds he is more then playing a part, as he gets enlisted to help out with the sheep, which happens to be more work then he has ever done before.

As days pass things back in London are getting worse as Harry spreads more rumors about Chase, while at Harriet's house Chase finds that he likes the family and Harriet more with each passing day. But will he be able to leave without informing the family of his true identity? Can he keep his secrets in the past? Will him having the talisman ring make the magic come true? And will Harriet's family make it out of their debt?

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. It was a very cute story. More tamed then I would have liked but it still kept my interest, wanting to see where this sweet romance between Chase and Harriet would lead.

My Previous Review(s) for this Author : Sleepless In Scotland

Book Teaser(s) :
They say the St. John talisman ring was made by the fairies and given to the handsomest man in all England, one Sir Gervase St. John. The fairies spelled that ring so that whoever held it should fall madly in love. ~ right before Chapter 1
"Something, perhaps. But for a captain to forget the name and location of his ship?"
She had a point. He touched the bandage. "But I hit my head. Very, very hard."
"Yes, but we cannot afford to raise his suspicions where the captain is concerned or he'll guess----" She clamped her mouth closed and glared at Chase as if he'd done something horrid.
Chase straightened. She'd almost said it ... almost. He closed in on her, wondering if perhaps he could get the truth out of her yet. "Gower will guess what?"
Her jaw tightened. "Nothing." ~ within Chapter 10

Feasted On: Night Huntress World Series, Book 1

Format: Paperback | Pages: 371 | Release Date: February 2010 | Publisher: Avon Books

"First Drop Of Crimson" [Night Huntress World Series, Book 1] by Jeaniene Frost

My Book Summary : A little over a year ago Denise and her husband, Randy, went to a New Year's Eve party, at her best friend Cat's place, that turned into one of the most terrible nights of Denise's life, as that is the night of her husband's death. Since then, Denise has made a point of avoiding anything to do with the supernatural world, even if that means cutting out Cat from her life. But when her relatives start dieing around her, it does seem unusual right until it's almost to late for her, she finds out that someone is killing her family, and she just happens to be his next target. So, once she gets home she puts a call into Cat & Cat's husband, Bones, but since they haven't talked in a couple of months she finds that both of their cell phones have been disconnected within that time. Hoping to find someone to help her, Denise decides on calling the only other vampire she knows who might help her named Spade, who is also a friend of Cat & Bones.

Over the phone Spade doesn't completely believe that Denise and her family are being targeted by anyone based on description of the perpetrator she saw, but as a favor he tells her that he'll be at her place by the following afternoon to check it out. However, even before he gets into her house he knows she wasn't lying and that he killer was/is a demon he just hopes that he isn't too late. Once he gets inside her house and finds her passed out on the floor, he looks her over to make sure she's okay. But when she comes, too she tells and shows him that she has been branded by the demon and was told that the only way to get the brands off and to save the remaining members of her family is to find her relative that started it all named Nathanial.

Soon she finds that because of the brands she has powers and a growing appetite that she has to get used to, Spade and her find themselves being drawn to each other that neither can ignore and neither are always sure that they want to ignore either, and more ...

Will Denise find Nathanial before she gets in too deep in the supernatural world? Or maybe she’ll find that once she’s there, there is no other place she’d rather be ... as long as Spade is never to far away ...

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars, sooo much better then I expected and hoped for!! I liked Denise and Spade (especially Spade) as secondary characters in the Night Huntress series but I loved them as the main characters in this book!! I can't wait to read what will happen to them and their friends now that things have certainly changed for all of them. =0) This novel was action packed, addictive, and touching ... along with some very night romance scenes. So, if you enjoyed the stories of Cat & Bones in the Night Huntress series then I recommend you checking out this book too!

Book Teaser(s) :
"When we find Nathanial, I want you to leave," Denise said softly. "Raum will know you set the salt bombs. He'll want revenge, and if he can track me, he'll know the second we find Nathanial. Then he'll probably try to kill you. He won't need you anymore."
Raum wouldn't need Denise anymore, either, and she knew that as well as he did. Even if the demon didn't have a grudge against her---and Spade doubted that, after today---Raum could kill her just for amusement.
"I have a plan for that as well," he said.
Her hazel eyes narrowed. "What?" ~ within Chapter 14
Black Jack's eyes flicked with interest to Denise. Spade saw it and stopped himself before he bared his fangs in instinctive possessiveness. Instead he tossed in a few chips and ran his hand along Denise's side one more time, meeting the vampire's gaze in challenge. Mine.
Black Jack's lips curled and he tilted his head in acknowledgment. One of the strongest vampire urges was territorialism. No vampire would tolerate someone ogling his property---unless that property was being offered. Denise, Spade had clearly indicated, was not. ~ within Chapter 16
