"Catch a Falling Star" by Beth K. Vogt

Okay, I apologize it must but the pregnancy brain going on but I can't seem to phrase this novel into my usual Book Summary so here is the Author's Book Description to give you a better understanding of what this book is about...

Author's Book Description : What does a girl do when life doesn’t go according to her plan? At thirty-six, Kendall Haynes has seen some of her dreams come true. She’s a family physician helping kids with severe allergies and asthma achieve more fulfilling lives—a childhood struggle she knows all too well. But are Kendall’s dreams of having it all—a career, a husband, children—nothing more than a childhood fantasy? God says He knows the plans He has for her—why can’t Kendall figure them out and be content with her life?

Griffin Walker prefers flying solo—both as an Air Force pilot and in his personal life. But a wrong choice and health problems pulled him out of the cockpit. His attempts to get out of “flying a desk” are complicated by his parents’ death—making Griffin the reluctant guardian of his sixteen-year-old brother, Ian. How did his life get so off course? Can he get his life back on track…or has there been a divine plan all along?

"Catch a Falling Star" reminds readers that romance isn’t just for twenty-somethings and that sometimes letting go of your “wish I may, wish I might” dreams is the only way to embrace everything God has waiting for you.

My Book Review : 3.5 out of 5 stars!! This inspirational heartwarming novel hooked me from the beginning with Kendall's dreams for her future to the budding romance she falls into! Kendall deals with a lot in this novel from her romantic life getting a boost to her career getting an unexpected hit from the sidelines. Yet she handles everything with such grace that you can't help but root for her, especially when it comes to her relationships with Griffin & Ian. It's all very sweet!

I recommend this novel to anyone who likes contemporary Christian romances!

Author's Book Interview(s) :

Book Teaser(s) :
As he tugged on his gloves and pulled the collar of his blue uniform jacket up around his neck, Griffin watched a red Jeep pass him on the highway, then ease over to the shoulder and back up. Offering a quick prayer of thanks that "real Jeeps never leave another Jeep stranded," Griffin stepped back out into the cold night air and moved toward the Good Samaritan.
The door to the Jeep CJ5 opened and a diminutive form bundled in a long coat stepped onto the silver nerf bar and then onto the gravel shoulder. A woman---but still a Jeep person. When Griffin recognized Dr. Kendall Haynes in the glare of the passing headlights, he almost turned around, sprinted back to his Jeep, climbed inside, and locked the door.
"Hi. I'm Kendall. Can I---you!"
The look on the woman's face was so comical---her mouth forming a perfect O, her eyes widening as if Griffin pulled a gun on her---that Griffin burst out laughing.
"Good evening, Dr. Haynes."
"Colonel Walker." ~ within Chapter 5

About the Author :

Beth K. Vogt is a non-fiction author and editor who said she’d never write fiction. She’s the wife of an Air Force physician (now in solo practice) who said she’d never marry a doctor—or anyone in the military. She’s a mom of four who said she’d never have kids. Beth has discovered that God’s best often waits behind the doors marked “Never.” She writes contemporary romance because she believes there’s more to happily ever after than the fairy tales tell us.

Beth is also a leader in helping women realize a satisfying life doesn’t require perfection.

With 30 years of active duty as a mom—experiencing everything from positive pregnancy tests to the mother of the groom dance—Beth helps moms:

  • Avoid the crippling effects of pursuing perfection
  • Increase their ability to say “No” to idealistic expectations and time demands
  • Extend more grace and compassion to themselves and their families

Beth is a national speaker and author of "Baby Changes Everything: Embracing and Preparing Motherhood after 35." Her message provides women with a “whole family” perspective to recognize how a late-in-life pregnancy affects other relationships.

If you’re a Mommy-Come-Lately®, Beth will help you love late-in-life motherhood!

An encourager at heart, Beth has more than 20 years experience teaching women at retreats, churches and other events, including the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers International) Convention and the Hearts at Home national and regional conferences. From 2007 through September 2011, she edited "Connections," the leadership magazine for MOPS International. She was a consulting editor for "MomSense magazine" and wrote a bimonthly column for "MomsNEXT," MOPS’ ezine for moms of school-age children.

Beth earned a journalism degree from San Jose State University. Her publishing credits include: "MomSense," "Discipleship Journal," "Virtue," "The Christian Communicator," and Crosswalk.com. She is also a contributor to "Chicken Soup for the Soul: A Tribute to Moms" and "The Mommy Diaries."

Beth met her husband Rob when he knocked her down at a karate studio. They’ve been married for 34 years. They have four children, ranging in ages from 30, 27, 25 and – thanks to a funny thing happening on their way to the empty nest—a 12-year-old. Feasted On: Shooting Stars by Allison Rushby

- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Hardcover - Pages: 265; Paperback - Pages: 265; Kindle Edition - File Size: 1929 KB | Expected Release Date: February 28, 2012 | Publisher: Walker Children's Books | Obtained: NetGalley

"Shooting Stars" by Allison Rushby

My Book Summary : Jo (also known as Zo Jo) decided to follow her father’s example and become a young paparazzo when she was 13-years-old. Now at 16 years of age it isn't her favorite thing to do but it is a way for her to earn a lot of money that she can save for photography school she'd like to attend. Also, during her time as pap she has honed in her skill using her height and looks to her advantage, which gets her into places that she wouldn't typically be able to get into. Because of her honed skills is the reason why she recently gets a request to go undercover to get shots of Ned Hartnett while he is at a "retreat" location to get help. However, even though the job would pay her enough money to get her into the school she wants, Jo soon finds it’s hard to take pictures of Ned because of how he is so nice to her at the retreat and at a previous time when they met when she was just starting out. In addition, she soon realizes there is more to the retreat situation then she was informed about the question is will the new information change her mind about what she's doing or does she need/want the money too badly?? Especially what will she do when she suddenly starts to have feelings for Ned and things start becoming more personal and less professional between them?

My Book Review : 4 out of 5 stars, this is an entertaining, fast-paced, fun, and dynamic novel!! It's about a 16-year-old paparazzo trying not to stay in the biz for her whole life yet she likes the money and a young star has a few issues of his own, but has always been nice to her, getting thrown into a situation that neither was prepared for. I really liked how the author handled the big twists this novel has in it!! I mean when Ned/Jake started getting suspicious about a pap being at the retreat center I pretty much cringed thinking, this novel wasn't going to turn out the way I wanted it too. However, I was satisfyingly surprised!! This novel came together better than I could have imagined!! Plus, it really helps that all of the characters in the book (not including Melissa) have truly redeemable qualities.

I enjoyed this book and I think you will too! I recommend it to anyone who likes YA romance novels with entertainment themes!

Author Book Trailer :

Book Teaser(s) :
It takes around a half hour drive in the minivan to get to the retreat. Brad and I spend most of the time in silence. I'm glad he simply points out landmarks, rather than quizzing me on why I'm headed to the loony bin.
I gulp when the large black electronic gates click shut behind the minivan and we start down the long driveway that must lead to the retreat itself. Or I'm hoping it does. Either we're headed for the retreat, or I've just joined a cult. ~ within Chapter 4
"You need to do something before you go insane."
"Too late," I moan.
"Seriously," Katrina continues, "I mean it. You need to get out of this room."
"And do what?" I roll over to look at her."It's almost eight. Scary curfew time. No going out of the doors after that, or the bogeyman will come and get me. Or Brad will come and get me. Not sure what's worse, actually."
Katrina laughs. "Me, either." ~ within Chapter 11

When she answered the ad, she had no idea she’d be working for Clay “The Grinch” Colson—recently retired baseball superstar. He’s every bit as intimidating as the scowl he’s famous for, and Katie believes the rumors she’s heard about how mean he is are true—until she sees him with his overgrown, crazy Boxer, Dixie.
Lucky Katie gets completely unexpected, front-row seats to a side of Clay the tabloids never captured. Every. Single. Morning. And the more she’s exposed to his gruff affection, the more she can’t help thinking there’s so much hiding behind that scowl… The more she wonders what she’d have to do to have him call her his good girl.
Every morning, the sexiest woman he’s ever seen comes to his house and calls him Daddy. Sure, she’s his dog walker, but that doesn’t mean she has the right to sashay into his world every morning, plant that saucy little gaze on him, and say, “Good morning, Daddy.”
Now that’s all he can think about—being her very dirty daddy.

~ SUMMER BERRY BERRY PIE ~
~ Submitted By: Jennifer Shirk ~

Hi, all! Jennifer here!

Thanks for stopping by the Bliss Pie Bake-Off!

For me, nothing says summer like a fresh fruit pie! My pie I've chosen for this bake-off has fresh raspberries, blueberries (a NJ fruit), strawberries and blackberries. YUM!

I admit that pie crust usually intimidates me, but the recipe for the crust that is included is super easy (especially if you have a food processor) and is great to work with since it rolled out really nice and even. And that rarely happens for me, so I will definitely make this crust again!

**I made the pie dough a day before to make it more simple for me.
If you all are interested, here is the recipe from www.jocooks.com

  • Ingredients :
    • Pie Crust :
      • 2½ cup flour
      • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
      • 1 tsp salt
      • 1 tsp sugar
      • 6 to 8 tbsp ice cold water
    • Filling :
      • 5 cups of mixed berries, sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries
      • ¾ cup light brown sugar
      • ¼ cup cornstarch
      • 1 tsp orange zest
      • ½ tsp vanilla extract
      • 1 egg white for egg wash
    • Instructions :
      1. Place the butter in freezer for 20 minutes.
      2. In a food processor add the flour, salt and sugar and pulse a couple times.
      3. Add the butter to the food processor and pulse a few times until the mixture resembles peas. Add the ice water one tablespoon at a time and continue pulsing. The dough should start to hold together.
      4. Remove dough from food processor and place it over your working surface. Form the dough into 2 discs, cover in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour up to 2 days before using.
      5. Preheat oven to 425 F degrees. Coat a deep-dish pie crust plate with nonstick baking spray.
      6. Place berries in a large bowl. In a small bowl combine brown sugar, cornstarch, orange zest and extract; mix well. Add to berries; toss to coat.
      7. Take out the pastry discs from the fridge and roll out a disc so that it's 12 inches in diameter and place it and arrange in your pie dish. Brush the pie crust with egg white so that it doesn't get soggy.
      8. Pour the berry mixture into the pie crust.
      9. Roll out the other disc so that it's 12 inches in diameter as well and cut it into lattice strips. Arrange the lattice strips nicely over the berries and brush with remaining egg white.
      10. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
      11. Let it cool before serving.

~ Cherry Pie ~
~ Submitted By: Cindi Madsen ~

This pie crust recipe is simple, but the trick is the prep. You don't want to over-mix & the time in the fridge is essential to making the flakiest crust. (Also, credit for this crust goes to my neighbor from my hometown, Luella Crowther. It was the first time I ate all the crust on my piece of pie, because YUM!)

  • Ingredients :
    • Pie Crust :
      • 2 C flour
      • ** 1 C butter (softened enough to work with)
        • ** shortening also works
      • 1/2 C water
      • dash of salt
      • Add butter to flour and work in by hand until you have pea-sized bits. Scatter liquid over surface. Stir until just mixed with a fork and roll into two dough balls. Place balls in plastic wrap, pull up edges and press dough into a disk. Refrigerate for at least one hour before rolling out. (Fridge up to 5 days, freeze up to 3 months)
      • Pound bottom crust dough with rolling pen. Roll out and form into pie pan.
    • Filling :
      • 1 Can of cherry pie filling (I search for the kind without corn syrup, because allergy fun!)
      • 1 tsp vanilla
      • 1 tsp almond extract
      • 1 T sugar
      • Mix and put on the bottom crust. (Fair warning, I like my cherries on the sweeter side with a little tart. If you prefer more tart, skip the sugar & vanilla)
      • Roll out second crust & cover. Flute edges & put in vent holes. Cover edges with foil, so they don't get too done. Bake at 375 for 45-60 minutes.

Jennifer Shirk has a bachelor degree in pharmacy-which has in NO WAY at all helped her with her writing career. But she likes to point it out, since it shows romantic-at-hearts come in all shapes, sizes, and mind-numbing educations.

She writes sweet romantic comedies and won third place in the RWA 2006 NYC's Kathryn Hayes Love and Laughter Contest with her book, "The Role of a Lifetime." Recently, her novel "SUNNY DAYS FOR SAM" won the 2013 Golden Quill Published Authors Contest for Best Traditional Romance.

She's also a board member for Straight Ahead Ministries, an organization involved in helping spread the gospel and aiding medical and pharmacy students in Russia. She resides in a beach resort in NJ, and when she's not involved in all the above, she's taking care of her most treasured possessions: her husband, daughter, guinea pig (Rocco), puppy (Sox) and four hermit crabs.

Kyra Jacobs is an extroverted introvert who writes of love, humor and mystery in the Midwest and beyond. Her romance novels range from sweet contemporaries to urban suspense, and paranormal/fantasy to YA. No matter the setting, Kyra employs both humor and chaos to help her characters find inspiration and/or redemption on their way to happily ever after.

When the Hoosier native isn’t pounding out scenes for her next book, she’s likely outside, elbow-deep in snapdragons or spending quality time with her sports-loving family. Kyra also loves to read, tries to golf, and is an avid college football fan.

Be sure to stop by her IndianaWonderer blog (link below) for tidbits about her upcoming novels, as well as stories and musings in between book releases.

Cindi Madsen is a USA Today Bestselling author of contemporary romance and young adult novels. She sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a new pretty pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music, dancing, and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children.
